For certain! He goes through a lot of changes which reveals his true character. Jack is a very stationary character by comparison, he doesn't need to change for us to love him. Hector is the opposite & shows something new in every film & his journey makes total sense all the way. For me Barbossa is just as important as Jack in POTC (how the heck did I make it through the second film when Barbossa is just in it for less than ten seconds?).

Character? Barbossa got a job. What self respecting pirate gets a job? Dude regressed

Except if you pay attention to the plot, the ending means no more magic in the seas. So no adventures worth a shit.

I LOVED the barbossa story arc. He became one of my absolute favourite characters

Potential Spoilers Ahead: I did like Salazar, in fact thought he was close to Davey Jones in terms of a villain. He was underutilized in my opinion though

I have to disagree. I prefer the last one. But everyone's has a different taste I guess :) It had a great ending.

Nah see, I prefer the next one to this one. Everybody has different tastes, and that's what's essentally great about any movie in general. And, not knowing if you know this, but I saw on RU-vid, a video about Johnny Depp saying that if Disney would make a public appology, acknowledgeing that they fired him too hastily, he'd consider returning as Captain Jack Sparrow. So, here's hoping.

@@Harmthuria I doubt that's going to happen, but I guess you never know. I'm just not a big fan of the fifth film because while the premise is really cool it kind a break too much canon for me to enjoy it. Particularly around how the compass works. I'm also not sure what they were trying to set up for following movies but it didn't seem like it made much sense from what the end credit scene implies. I can still sit down and watch any of the movies no problem I don't think any of them were truly terrible or anything.

@@BiasFree I agree with you on the end credits scene. If all curses are broken, Davy Jones shouldn't be a squid faced captain anymore. And, I don't know why or how the compass made Salazar and his men free, but I really wished they'd elaborate on it in the next one. But sadly, there hasn't been a next one yet.

@@chase_j8750 I don't remember that either. But if that's the case, I would like to know why the compass works like that. P.S. I remember thinking, about the compass in the Curse of the Black Pearl, that the compass didn't point north, but instead it pointed to the island where the cursed gold was. This theory of mine was then shattered by it's sequel when they explained that the compass will point to whatever it is the holder wants most, but I wasn't bothered by it. I actually like that about it.

My utter disappointment with the 5th is not due to magic or sci-fi, it's the absolute mishandling of Jack's character. He's always been a clever fool, that gets into poor circumstances, but is legitimately clever enough to sneak his way out. The 5th just has him as a bumbling, down on his luck idiot. SPOILERS: I like the idea of showing him washed out and struggling, that has potential for good development, but by waving away all of his accomplishments as just being lucky and that his actual luck ran out? Stupid. By having that happen by giving the compass away? AND they broke canon because he got the compass from Tia Dalma, not a random pirate. They also shoehorned Will and Elizabeth without actually giving their characters any weight or respect, Will looked terrible when he had full intent of fulfilling his duties as captain, and...it was a mess. There are some decent aspects, I don't full on hate it, but it is just...disappointing. They had a 6 year break between 4 and 5, that should have been PLENTY of time to write a really good script. Instead we had something that felt like a larger story crammed into one. The 5th could have been a setup, with Jack in prison, washed out, kind of given up. Barbossa in the service, but searching for his daughter, perhaps getting sentimental knowing he is nearing the end of his violent life. Have Henry searching for his father, both giving a nice familial theme. This movie would see Barbossa searching for Jack to get his compass to find his daughter, Henry searching for Jack because that's his lead to find/save his father, and Jack regaining purpose and life throughout. Let the film end with a conflict between Sal and the crew, possessing Henry (another thing made out to be a big deal in the movie that ended up meaning nothing), and we end with a cliff hanger that would pull Elizabeth back in to save her son, Jack realizing this unresolved ghost from his past (who maybe killed Jack's dad between 4 and 5, just to give extra motivation for him), and Barbossa trying to be better for his daughter, heading for a final journey and conflict in the 6th film that sees WIll's supernatural crew against Sal, Henry saving his father, Barbossa sacrificing himself, and Jack finally regaining his oopmh and...I'm not sure. But if I had 6 years to write I could certainly do so. So I don't hate it, but I miss what could have been

Subpar VFX, Johnny Depp forgets he is playing Jack Sparrow and not The Mad Hatter, two shallow, uncharismatic and underwritten leads, a twist that completely changes a fan favorite character before killing them off and an ending that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Absolutely agree. People complained about this movie SOOO much when it came out for having mermaids and the fountain of youth and the ropes of black beards ship under his control. I kept saying, Like WTF. do you remember them saving Jack from the dead with a million stone crabs he surfed his ship upon after flipping a ship upside down and the right side up in the ocean to make it there and back? Like obviously its incredibly realistic.

No, problem with the last one is that they "forgot" everything they established. ALL of the lore were rewritten. It doesn't work like that, you CAN"T rewrite all the established things.

Yes he was such a good convincing villain . Even more than Davy Jones , Barbosa and Salazare. I mean by looking at him you know he is evil. At least Jones once loved a person and Barbosa cared for his daughter but Blackbeard let his daughter (whether he was certain she wad a daughter or not) die for him

I feel like the whole series was inspired by Tim Powers’ voodoo pirate novel right from the start, even if they only secured the rights to the book after the first film had come out, you can already see a lot of story elements and character types that seem lifted from On Stranger Tides in the original film. The other source people say the screenwriters took inspiration from was the Monkey Island video games, but according to the creator of the games they were also inspired by Powers’ novel (as well as the Disney theme park ride.)

Exactly! In the 5th film he got the Luke Skywalker treatment - before TLJ had even come out yet! But it was just as destructive to a lead protagonist nevertheless. Unrecognizable. Henceforth the story itself follow.

For me it's more-so that I like overarching stories and such. This one feels more like the first movie to me, in that it's just a rompy fun film. There's nothing wrong with that per-se, but it just isn't for me. 2 and 3 are really what made the series for me. That being said, I haven't watched anything after this one. So if it was just building up to another "set" of movies, so-to-speak, then I'll like it more once I eventually getting around to watching those. But if each movie is just sort of "it's own thing" then I won't care for them much.

I like it because it's Jack, to me he has always been the center of the franchise anyway. And even though people don't actually say it it is hated because it feels like a soft reboot and Will/Elizabeth didn't show up/could've been gone from the franchise at the time. There's nothing wrong with hating a movie or show/specific season because of one actor/actress in my opinion but it's better to be direct instead of making up excuses that it's because of the side characters and etc.
