I bought my XT1 when it first came out, as an upgrade to my XE1. Just a year ago, I finally upgraded to the XT4 specifically for better video, bigger battery, and IBIS (for my large collection of prime lenses without OIS). After all those years, the XT4 is still basically the same fantastic camera as the XT1 with just a bunch of evolutionary improvements. I love these cameras. Seeing your video, I may dust off my XT1 and pop on a manual lens and take it out for some fun. BTW, I did have my XT1 professionally reskinned by Fujifilm of North America - perfect!!! ❤
I wanted to learn photography. So I got a used Sony A7s2. Then lens I got with it was damaged. I thought buying a zoom lens would help me practice diversely with different focal lengths. The thing is I don't keep my camera with me. I should have got a fixed focal length lens (which would have also been smaller) and a smaller camera so that I can keep this handy with me always. I need to practice more and more. The setup I have currently I just don't carry with me. Keeping in mind I want to click pictures in low light during evening and night after office, please share some suggestions for a body and lens to have with me everyday.
LOVE my XT1 with the 35mm 1.4 it’s still to this day 12 years later my main portrait set up. Use my iPhone 15 pro Max for the 15 and 24mm lenses and then my XT1 for photos of people see no reason to upgrade the out of camera colours are amazing
I own a black and graphite version of the XT-1! Both are as new! I love them and never will sell it! The feel and the sensor are unique. ❤ Thanks for the video.
I bought as soon as it was released and still got it. I love it and I also use it with manual lenses. The rubber issue was a service done free of charge by fuji back in the day here in Germany.
I bought this when it was current model then sold it a while later for a stupidly low price which I now regret. Feeling nostagic I just bought it's smaller brother the X-T10! I love the results from my Sony's but sometimes you want something different. The X-T1 with 18-55 OSS is a great combo
I just bought one for the second time, because of it's very good price and quality. I also own a XT-2, which is an awesome camera! But i love the XT-1 for it's smaller size and the lovely x-trans 2 sensor. It's better to have an old but gold camera with me, than an expensive one at home.
Bought this 6 years ago coming from Canon. Canon is great albeit plastic. I wanted something that mimicked the film look and mechanical tactility. Fuji provided. Shooting Fuji is like hopping back into a manual car. Finicky, but once you master it, you master every platform because of the difficulty curve. I've done tons of professional work with stills and it excels for my style. In the moment, how I see it, film like, smooth and creamy stills and video. It doesn't excel at uber sharp imaging, which this isn't meant for.
@@TomCalton I have the XT1 the XT2 and the XT3 as well as the XT4 .. and I still use the XT1 for a professional work, and it stands up against the other ones very well when it comes through image performance and the colors that it provides when you get your settings right it is on point I am going to buy another one as well because I like it just that much time I’m going to buy the silver edition, but do not get me wrong. It is an older camera, but I know how to use it and my customers love the images that a produces so no this camera is not just for fun is for work and I have fun working with it..
When I check the prices youtubers show for cameras, like this one "$250," I almost always find them on eBay and elsewhere for nearly TWICE as much. In this case... $450, body only.
Great video! I had an X-T1 that I loved, but I parted with it due to mechanical faults. Unfortunately that was right when prices started skyrocketing. I've been thinking of getting another, but I prefer my cameras well loved. Any chance you might share the template for the leather?
I daily an X-T1, and coming from using an X-M1 and X-A5, I feel like... it's the perfect compromise. It has acceptable AF if you use the phase-detect ones in the center, and it has extremely impressive low-light performance (beats the A7II in my eyes!). Yet, at the same time, the camera still has those beautiful colors that are a byproduct of the limited sensor technology that Fujifilm were working with back in the day, giving it X-Trans 1 colors while having creature comforts that still make it a very relevant professional camera even now. I've done sports, I've done portraits, and I've done street, and the camera held up to the task for everything I threw at it. And with it being 20mm thinner than the other X-T cameras, I wanna carry that thing everywhere, which leads to me capturing photos that I wouldn't have with a different camera. It costed me 350 dollars, though I think each bit of that was worth it. Wouldn't trade it in for another camera.
I think you're seriously putting too much emphasis on this camera's age. I own a 10 year old Nikon, and it produces images that are waaay better, than any of the lastest smartphones can (yes, I have one too) As for the video, full HD (1080p) is still good enough, since 4k doesn't offer that much of a visible difference.
You can also try eBay or Facebook marketplace. Buying a second hand camera often requires a certain amount of patience and dedication to find a bargain. It's not like buying new where most items have a set price. The value is determined by local markets. Supply and demand. Failing that, buy one from the UK and get it shipped - it may still work out cheaper than the $400 you're quoting, even with shipping. Good luck!
No, not "everyone" ! If that was true, it would have been the most selling camera. Fuji is at the bottom of selling cameras in large numbers. Click bait.
This was my first camera, perfect for understanding the ins and outs of photography. I still use it as my daily and even after upgrading to an a7III, I find myself grabbing this camera for when I’m on the go. XT-1 paired with the right lens can give amazing photos.

The only problem is unless you find an absolute beater that some crackhead is selling, an X-T1 sells for at least $400. MPB or fleabay, that’s the going rate. That and is anyone else getting tired of “the $150 street camera” theme? It’s like, yeah eBay, old cameras and streets exist. 😂
Out of interest, why did you watch this video? If you're cynical about being able to buy second hand cameras cheap enough and the whole street photography format isn't your thing, then why watch? Genuinely interested as it feels odd that you'd complain about me delivering on the very 2 things the title of the video explicitly tells you the video is about.
I watched the video because I genuinely wanted to see a camera worth $150 and the title didn’t tell me so I had to watch it. This camera is definitely not going for that price and it does feel misleading and now I’m told it’s my fault for assuming that info from a vague thumbnail. I’m just not going watch these misleading content creators.
Lol you've got to have thick skin for the absolute utter tripe people love to comment on the internet. Carry on doing what you do Tom I've bought a lot of Sigma lenses based off your reviews.
My biggest problem is the plethora of young photographers inventing themselves as RU-vid street photography 'experts'. There are two names in particular, both British, who have big subscriber numbers but produce absolute garbage results and it's worrying that people blindly follow their 'advice'. A colleague of mine told me of one of them who he claimed he was 'London's leading street photographer'. When I then mentioned some respected London street photographer names to him, he hadn't heard of any of them, probably because they don't have RU-vid or Tiktok channels. That bothers me. However, if young people are getting into photography, that's a good thing and should not be discouraged. If young people are discovering older cameras for cheap, that's excellent. If they want to make a RU-vid video about it, what's the problem? And if other photographers discover these cameras because of it, then job done. I enjoyed this video, found it informative, the photos showcased were great, and I love this guy's enthusiasm. He's not telling us we should buy it and he's not telling us how the camera will improve our photography. He's just a camera nerd, and I love camera nerds on RU-vid! Writing shitty comments on his channel is for ar$eh0les. Oh, and the XT1 IS available on mpb for less than £200. I just checked.
damn horrible thumb rest but like, this camera is amazing. Sad that the grip falls off, had the same issue and sold my beloved xt1, kinda regretting it.
Hi Tom, actually Fujifilm will happily replace your rubber if you send the camera to them. They did this for free for me in germany and I was out of warrenty for 5 years.
I replaced mine on my own, because after looking up recent quotes (reddit forum) showed it was roughly $300-$400 CAD just to replace skin rubber.... which is how much I paid when I bought the camera last year... so I bought a replacement rubber skin from ali express
Oh I reached out to Fuji NA before replacing it myself. I sent them a photo of the state of my xt1 showing the rubber peeling. They said I needed to send the camera to them, and then they send me quote after. Didnt say how long that will overall take either. So yeah, just changed it myself. Turned out great if I say so myself! ^^
I went from x-t10 to x-pro1, only thing im missing is pivotable lcd the pro-1 is a magnificent piece of technology, it's a but pricier at times, but for street photography, the dual mode viewfinder is awesome
I love my X-Pro 2 and I'm hoping to review the X-Pro 1 sometime in the future. I would agree with you though, a tiltable screen would be a nice addition

$250 is a massive steal... I've never seen anything lower than $400 for any xtrans camera. Even the fuji x10 (which is not an xtrans sensor) is like $350. Thats insane
MPB are usually very competitive on price to be fair. The one I bought was in "well used" condition, which explains the rubber. If you're happy to compromise on the cosmetic condition, you can get some real bargains.
Love your video and I do use this camera as a daily but I have the same problem with the leather and I'm wondering if you could share the leatherette cutout template so i can do the replacement as well
Oh, I love my XT1! I bought mine after I sold my XT3. I was surprised how good the overall quality of the camera, I liked the screen and view finder better comparing it to the Fuji XT20. It made photography for me extra fun, I find myself using all the buttons and dials of the camera, most of the time, I use manual lens with it. It's a photo first camera but from time to time I challenge myself, I take videos with it too. It's important to set expectations when you purchase an almost 10yr old camera. Overall, I'm happy with it. Mine is still in good condition, during the peak of pandemic I bought it for $300 USD, here in the Philippines currently the pricing is in between $400-$500 USD it can cost more if its in mint condition, based on the facebook marketplace. I wish I started photography with the XT1, learning the basics is much easier with it because of the physical dials, well that's just me. My most used film simulation are provia, colorchrome and monochrome. I use the XT1 for its strengths, it is important to know your tool. Wifi transfer within camera is also useful. You got yourself a new subscriber. 🎉
Hey, welcome aboard! 🙌🏻 I completely agree with your comment on having to set expectations with older gear. If you can do that, there's a lot of fun to be had with using older cameras. 🙂

The XT1 is a great little camera. Paired with the 27mm pancake lens, it's perfect for street photography. I did update mine to the XT2 which in my opinion is even better (and not that much more expensive on the second-hand market) and that's the one I still use today for street photography. By the way, the 27mm f2.8 lens is really sharp (especially when used at f5.8 for street work) and is my favourite Fuji lens (and I've had some great, much more expensive Fuji lenses)
Actually, the truth is the X-T1 (along with the X-100, X-E1, X-T10, X-Pro1, X-100S, X-100T and darned-near every iteration of the 2 series-sensor cameras) came under relentless, negative criticism from the photo-media "experts" and prosumers at the time of each release. These were bashed all over YT and online, compared unfavorably with Sony, Olympus, and even full-frame DSLRs and uber-priced Sony's. There's never been an end to the call for Fuji to release a full-frame version of these too, despite the fact they launched a cost-effective medium format in lieu of full frame. The fact is that until very recently - namely the X-100V social media madness phenomenon - these older cameras and lenses were scorned and dismissed out-of-hand as archaic, incompetent, grandpa-focused gear. I own multiple Fuji cams - my first purchase the X-E1 with the 18-55 kit lens a few months after release - and I haven't looked back since. They're amazing for what they are - BOTH then and now. Thing is...Gens Y, Z, and A suddenly discover old stuff and it becomes all the rage. It's become almost impossible to find an influencer who isn't [suddenly] signing praises for X-E1s and X-100S cameras despite their 12-year age. Hard to find even low-use, used copies of these types of cameras online, thanks to the perpetual back-orders on X-100VI, X-100V, X-100F, X-T5, X-E4 and even older models. It also appears many are "angry" at Fuji for not being able to meet the overwhelming demand for their latest releases (though that is owed more to pre-purchase volumes of sensors, which are allocated over many manufacturers in allotment). I'm DELIGHTED these old fogie cameras are finally getting their due, so keep it up! But man...do I wish these were reviewed in light of all the negativity they've gotten over the years pre-covid (when dinosaurs roamed the earth...). :)
Hello mate. Do you still have the files/measurements used to cut the leather? Would really appreciate if you could share them. The skin of my xt1 is 100% gone, except the usb part.
Hi where can I get that red skin/sticker for xt1 ? Also video focus is bad even for zero movement video . Any tips to fix it . I used the 17-55 f2.8-4 lens .
I like my T7, I do want an Xt1 and I want a Sony 5100, I want all the cheap small cameras but I also want to put the biggest lenses on them I can 😂 that brass pancake you use is awesome though
Haha! The ultimate dilemma. 😅 Yeah, I've really enjoyed using the Brightin Star 28mm. It won't be for everyone, but it's my new favourite lens at the moment
The xt1 was one of the first fuji film cameras I looked into cause I wanted to get into their eco system. When I finally had the money to buy one the prices went up and now all I can find is $400+ for one Ended up getting a canon eos M2 instead that I found for $180 from KEH and just made 3 picture profiles trying to imitate some film simulations. Still sad I couldn’t get a hold of a xt1 but I made do with the m2 for now.
Do you have the templates for the leather? It happened to mine and i don't know where to find the cutout. And i finally found someone who did it great.
Do you really think that this video drove up the price of this camera in 1 day? MPB can't even grade the condition of their stock right, let alone alter prices in such a short period of time 😂
Have 2 X-t1's and 1 X-t2. Really love everything about the one, except the autofocus which can miss even in direct sunlight with single point- and the 2 ain't much better. They particularly miss focus when you repeat the shot at the same distance- it's as if when it gets focus right and is then asked to shoot again, it freaks out and doesn't know what to do- "I got it right the first time, I can't take this anymore!" I'd say it misses focus about 10% of the time- which can bite ya! But if you manual... Reasons I initially bought it were: size, features and the superb 14mm- even with 16 megapixels it can still take some absolutely cracklin' photos!
As I mentioned in the video, mine was particularly cheap because of its poor condition. So, if you don't mind your camera looking a little rough around the edges, this can be a great way to save some money.
I own a X-T1, before videos like this started the hype again. I got it for quite cheap few years back. And it is absolutely brilliant. Build quality is good, I love the big viewfinder. I guess resolution got much better, but it is big and you actually can evaluate what you are shooting. It was back then the first time I have seen an electronic viewfinder and understood the benefits in comparison to an DSLR optical viewfinder. Only few years back, the viewfinder in Sony APS-C cameras was just bad and not fun to use. Also had an X-T10 testwise, and its viewfinder was really bad and small in comparison, despite being relatively similar in general. I also love the size if zhe X-T1, the later generations are significantly bigger. Of course, this camera is best for stills only. The AF ist slow, face recognition isn't great. But it can deliver such beautiful images. I also have an X-E3 with an X-Tran III sensor, and I have used an X-T4 of a friend with an X-T IV sensor. And even though AF greatly improved, as well as low light capabilities, somehow the old X-T1 generates the most beautiful pictures out of cam. They have a kind of texture and a "warmth" in it. And it looks and works so harmonically with the old 35mm 1.4 and the 56mm 1.2. However, there are several old gems out there that are similarly good for the purpose. Several old mFT bodies are pretty cheap and good for example (including some lenses). Modern cameras have their advantages, but most cameras build from 2010 on are great, even older cameras can produce great images. Just saw an old Canon 1Ds mkii for 150€. A tank, 16MP Fullframe. Wisley used still a workhorse that can create stunning results. But far from compact or lightweight.
I absolutely love mine. It's just amazing. I have a 12mm 18mm 55 to 200 Then an M42 adaptor to use a f1.8 nifty 50 A helios 44-2 And a Tair 300 f4.5 And a set of extension tubes totalling up to 83.5mm I can't put it down even after 10 years of owning it. And yes mine is shedding its skin ha ha but it still smashes out some amazing amazing images. If you love full manual control over your camera then get one, you will not regret it.
I bought an X20 as a 'fun' point and shoot in 2013. At the time I was still using Nikons for work (Real Estate/Architecture). Shortly after that, I got an X-A1 with XC16-50 kit and an XF27/2.8. So much smaller than my Nikons and the flip LCD allowed me to not have to crouch down any more. I COULD shoot flip LCD with the Nikons with 'mirror up' mode, but the mirror was held up electronically and it chewed through batteries VERY quickly that way.) The X-A1 was OK, but the CCD (rather than the X-Trans) wasn't ideal and I DO like having an eye level finder too. I kept my Nikons for Events and Portraits. As soon as the X-T1 hit the streets I took a look and was floored. I bought the first one delivered to my State the first day they hit the streets. The VF was GINORMOUS and it just fit my hand perfectly. I got that X-T1 and went 'all in' with Fuji and sold off all of my Nikon cameras and lenses. Lack of a joystick didn't bother me...the 17 years of my photography career was made with manual focus cameras only and I now have 38 years of muscle memory focusing in the center and recomposing my shot and making the exposure. With a Half Press of the shutter button...I still can't get the hang of rear button Autofocus. I'm WAY faster with this using AF-S center focos than using AF-C or AF-A or pushing the active AF point around the screen with my thumb. I've had 18 other X Bodies since that first X-T1 purchase (I got a second one in Titanium the day the X-T1 was discontinued...sold it a few years ago) and I use an X-T3 for work these days (and three X-E4 bodies for fun most of the time) but I still have that original X-T1 (with the vertical grip) and still love it. (Still have my X20 too.) MY X-T1 is covered over in leopard spotted duct tape rather than nicely cut red leather. Fuji was grand and sent me a replacement set of rubber body covering the first time it fell off and that second skin lasted just about another year. The Ti model was starting to get bad when I sold it. After that second covering fell off, I got creative and the duct tape has actually held up VERY well in the years since (though it's not in my hand 8hrs a day/5 days a week any more either.) It's always a conversation piece when I DO take it out to play though. :) Excellent video.
Yes, but it won't lock your focus and when you recompose, whatever is under the center AF when you push the shutter ALL the way is what will be in focus. I don't always want the center of my frame in focus, sometimes my subject I want in focus is off center.
The X-T1 is my first Fuji camera and still my main camera to use for everyday use. And yeah the rubber stretching thing is sad. I ripped mine off, cut the excess off then glued it back again. Feels good as new to me I guess. Lol!
If you know anything about printing and "viewing distance" you would know that anything above 10mp is MORE than enough. And who really cares when it is about street photography? Street photography is about telling a story and making the viewer feel something, not about pixels or sharpness. The old masters could take amazing street photographs with analog stone age cameras - the X-T1 is like going from smoke signaling to a smartphone in comparison with the old time cameras. Dont get fooled into thinking that "gear" can take good street photographs, it is only about YOU and your creative vision - and learning your photographic tool (your camera) inside and out.
If you do purchase this camera make sure you update the firmware. My only criticism of this video is that the need to update the firmware wasn't mentioned. When the X T1 first came out, well it kind of sucked. Watch Tony and Chelsea Northrup's review of the X T2. At the intro they first show their early review when the X T1 first came out, they weren't impressed. But they did a quick review in the X T2 video to show what had changed at and after the 4.0 firmware was released for the "one" version. Today the firmware edition is substantially higher than 4.0 but the 4.0 release is really necessary to turn the X T1 into a decent camera.
I love these videos: "The $XYZ camera that is the worlds best [ABC type] photography camera" .... in a matter of a few hours that model on the auction sites will be 2x-3x the price in the title / thumbnail. I make it a habit of only looking for cameras if the buzz /popularity is about 2-3 years old and the prices have come back down to Earth. Same thing with "vintage" audio gear and video cameras....
This camera will always be in my collection of Nikon, Lumix, Pentax, Sony and Minoltas. If something happened to it, I would replace it. But the the Nikon Z50 is the one I carry the most these days.
Unfortunately, 1mo later and here in the US mpb is completely out of them and on eBay lowest price is about $450, only about $100 less than the lowest price of the XT2. Still, I never really considered Fuji cameras till now. Those manual dials are *exactly* what I’ve been wanting as I learned (B&W) photography on an original Canon F-1 and wanted to get back to focusing on the basics with a 50mm equivalent prime. Found a used X-T2 with a shutter count of 69 for $550 and gonna go with that.
Really curious about the full walkthrough of the customization of the leather, would it be possible to ask for a tutorial on the whole process? I have an X-T10 and the rubber's also stretched so I was hoping to remedy the grips, looking forward to hear from you, thanks!
There really wasn't much more to add - I covered it all in the video. The die-cutter was a game changer as I couldn't imagine trying to cut the leather by hand. It'd be a nightmare! If you have any questions though, just let me know.
@@TomCalton thanks Tom! I'll go and try it out myself, been itching to replace the grips on mine 😅 i dont know how ill go on about making a template on the grips for the x-t10 but ill try and do my best to learning how ill do it in illustrator, if u have tips id be happy to hear 'em out! Thanks again!❤ Love the content
Just sold my X-T1 again. It’s been my third and I’m sure it won’t be my last. I’m a strange man 😂 But it was again a (great!) year of use for no money. Down to my X100V now.
I had this camera for a year while waiting for the X-T5 to tide me over, when I got the X-T5, months later I asked myself "why did I sell that camera again?" Not that I like it more than the X-T5 or anything, it's just that there are some types of shots the X-T1 is just better at, in fact if I buy another I'll make it basically dedicated to black & white photography. The X100T is another option for that kind of use.
i jumped from nikon d600 , without enough testing. my clients were mad because i didnt realised, the photos were soft. i hated it since then. though i love the color and the tech, i still prefer the old nikon d600.
@@TomCalton Thank you Tom. 28mm is great size for the landscape photography I do. I like the compactness of the lens especially on the Fuji. Best wishes from Northern Ireland 👍👍
Its a classic a lovely camera I managed to pick one up for £180 pound needed a bit of TLC but it all works and produces lovely photographs the colours are great its also good at B&W.......
Once again can you please share the CAD drawings for the leather? It’s hard to find replacements now and I don’t have any idea how to use CAD so please if you could share, thanks.
can you please order a canon eos m next but then try photos instead of video, the original m from canon looks like an awesome camera for trips or just for around the house
The X-T1 is my 2rd great love for a camera body. I started with an X-T30, bought an X-T4 and traded everything for an X-T5 when it came out. I also had a budget to get a second hand X-T1 IR converted camera... And while mine is an IR converted model, I would still love this camera. It's just got that 'je ne sais quoi', that soul. The X-T5 is a true successor of the X-T1 and X-T3. It really gives the same experience but with all the bells and whistles you'd want with a modern camera. But the nitty gritty of it, the X-T3 offers the same flexibility that the X-T1 does. And it's reasonably priced still. So if you're looking into fuji x mount cameras, the X-T1, 2 and 3 are all very good options. There is nothing wrong with the X-T4, but I feel like the hybrid camera slider swung way too much into the video with that body.
I have an XT-20 and while I do like it very much, I find the UX and not being able to successfully connect it to my other devices very frustrating and that inability leads to disuse...
