This was the most intense film I've seen in a long time. Here are my thoughts on Civil War and why I think it's an important film that everyone should see.

There is one scene missing from this perfect movie. A short time after the noisy start of the D.C. Siege, cut to a view of the statue of Lincoln, sitting inside the monument. A very still scene, a very quiet scene, an almost serene scene, but, in the far, far away distance, you can hear machine gun fire. As the D.C. siege moves forward, cut to this serene scene a few more times and each time the gunfire gets louder and louder. Finally, when the rocket strikes, and the building explodes, we see Lincoln, with rubble piled up to his shoulders. He is trapped, frozen, unable to be free. Another explosion rocks, the building. The rubble falls away completely, like Lincoln has been freed. And lastly, we see a black-and-white snapshot-of-quietness of Lincoln’s closeup face. That is a scene missing from the movie.

The most unrealistic part of the movie was the president being in the White House where he would be vulnerable to being killed or captured. In real life he would have been in the most secure bunker in the world probably embedded inside a mountain somewhere in a top secret location. I was expecting him NOT to be inside the White House at the end.

Agreed in all actuality but history does tend to show when the curtains are pulled on deposed dictators they're usually found in less than ideal situations devoid of their loyal following. Saddam was found in a literal hole, Gaddafi in a drainage pipe. They're a far cry from POTUS but likely hubris got the best of him until the WF had control of the airspace, ground level & subterranean tunnels of DC. Maybe by that point he would rather have his last stand in the Oval Office than in the bunker. I mean he had a small handful of Secret Service members guarding him in the end.

Maybe its a tad unrealistic but they could have been thinking that whoever defeats the President would not want to destroy the White house a symbol of our democracy.

My biggest disappointment about the movie was not the movie ITSELF but the lack of WORLD BUILDING that I wanted. I went to the book store (and checked online) to find either an OFFICIAL MOVIE NOVELIZATION, or a PREQUAL or SPINOFF novel or some book describing more the politics and events of that fictional world (much like Hunger Games or Star Wars might have) and there was NOTHING. The "official website" I am not even sure is official canon and might just be fan fiction. This movie really needed other forms of media to expand its fictional universe and I saw NONE of that ONLY the movie. In and of itself the movie was great but an analogy is wanting a balanced meal and even if the steak is the best steak in the world and perfectly cooked you still need a salad or serving of steamed veggies and a potato for the meal to be balanced. It is not lost on me that the "Civil War" Marvel Universe movie got an official novelization and this movie did not. A book describing in detail all of the political factions and events leading up to this movie would be AWESOME. Or maybe a PREQUEL movie.

I would be interested in learning how the war started but I think including it in the movie would’ve taken away focus from the point of the movie which is to show the horrors of war and polarization.
@Zurround
@Zurround Месяц назад
@@TheTylerHour I AGREE with you and I am actually GLAD that the movie did not delve too much into those details. What I want is other forms of media, like books or graphic novels or other movies (sequel or something) to expand this fictional universe. The first Star Wars movie did not go into much detail about the past events and politics of that fictional universe but the world building happened with books and other movies. I checked online and went to my local book store and there was no prequel novel or official movie novelization or a book describing this in more detail as was done with Hunger Games. I feel "abandoned" that we get this one movie and then that's it. This is a story too epic for just one movie.

I appreciate the kind words! I think what I meant to say is that the BATTLES are a backdrop. You’re right. The war is front and center. What I meant when I said that is that we don’t get to see a lot of the action between the western forces and the loyalist army (until the end of the movie). Instead the film focuses on small groups within the war rather than large scale battles.

It's just a movie that's it that's all. I never really felt to read into the why of a civil war but I would reason the part of the soldiers asking what kind of Americans they were was because of the groups alliances. I recall one part of Sammy talking about Maoist Portland so maybe the Chinese invaded the US as the "New Peoples Army" and they shot the 2 Asians with them because they were seen as combatants from that part of the country?

What did you think of the lack of Nick Offerman? Putting him at the top of the film made it seem like his story would be more integral to the plot and then he was only in 2 scenes and some VO
@TheTylerHour
@TheTylerHour Месяц назад
Nick Offerman was definitely wasted in the movie. I didn’t think we needed to see the president’s side of the story since the focus was on the journalists but they definitely could’ve gotten a lesser known actor for that role. Casting Offerman led me to believe that he was gonna play a bigger part.

@@TheTylerHour Is this actor famous or something? He is not ringing a bell with me? I was expecting him to be some villain who is trying to have the constitution changed (maybe with success) so that he can be president for life. In the preview when he said "one nation under God" he really emphasized the word "GOD" with his voice making me think that he was trying to turn USA into a religious theocracy (so much for "separation of Church and State") but I never really saw any of that in the movie. I posted above that a prequel novel (or movie) could flesh out that more.

Great review. I am making a collection of CIVIL WAR reviews. Your review is in my top three Can I add my own little book and movie review? According to Fareed Zakaria, in his brilliant new book, Age of Revolutions, Alexis de Tocqueville, in January 1848, warned the French legislature that there was pent-up political energy in the country that was waiting to explode like a volcano. A few months later riots broke out from Paris to Vienna and Berlin and Rome and elsewhere. The reasons were likely different than they are in modern America, but pent-up political energy can become a volcano for different reasons. Maybe, Alex Garlands new movie CIVIL WAR, is a modern version of the de Tocqueville 1848 speech, a speech that Garland is giving to the American people. Maybe it is a warning, a wake-up call, that November 2024, can be a trigger for that pent-up political energy. Bullets and rockets striking the White House, like in the movie? Maybe not. Riots in the streets of cities across America? Maybe. What if (hopefully) Democrat Joe Biden wins the 2024 presidential election? Before leaving office, former President Trump sent a violent mob to break into the Congress, to try to stop the peaceful transition of power. Former President Trump has since convinced tens of millions of Americans that the 2020 election was stolen, and Joe Biden is not the legitimate president. A Republican senator Tim Scott refuses to say he would accept the results of a presidential election if Joe Biden won in 2024. That sounds like a whole lot of pent-up political energy to me. I, obviously, recommend that you see this movie and read this book. This might be the most politically important movie of my lifetime, as l approach what I know is, absolutely, the most important election of my lifetime.
@TheTylerHour
@TheTylerHour 29 дней назад
Wow! I am honored to be in your top three! I have not heard of this book but it sounds interesting. I think this year was a perfect time for this movie to come out because the political division in America is at an all time high. It does seem like we may be headed in the direction of a civil war
@baileythefilmmaker
@baileythefilmmaker Месяц назад
This is the most mature intelligent video I have seen on the movie so far. I was sad to see everybody missing the point of the film. However, I don't think the film is apolitical or neutral. The movie takes place under the regime of a right-wing fascist government, and one of its most terrifying villains is an alt-right, racist soldier who commits horrifying crimes. While the movie doesn't revolve around the war between left and right alone, it does play a part. The movie is centered around extremism vs centrists and the horrors of war, which, faced with America's current climate, is the definition of a political film. Also, I think the little context they do give as to why the Western Forces and Florida alliance are rebelling against the oppressive regime of an authoritarian third-term president who has disbanded the FBI and unleashed air strikes on his own citizens, is enough. The point of the movie is that it doesn't take much to get from the current state of America to the dystopian civil war present in the movie. I loved this movie so much and think it is so necessary in today's world.
@TheTylerHour
@TheTylerHour Месяц назад
You’re right. The film does portray the extremists as the enemy. When I said it doesn’t pick a side I meant that its message isn’t specifically left or right wing. I think most of us can agree that extremism on either side is a bad thing. I definitely wouldn’t call this film apolitical since it’s nearly impossible to avoid politics in a film about a civil war. But I would say the politics are very surface level in this film. The most we get is that one scene where Sammy mentions that the president has had a third term and what not. The film doesn’t get too deep with the politics that lead to the war. I guess what I was trying to say was that this film isn’t very politically divisive. I think most people can agree that the president in this movie is a fascist and that the events that happen in this movie should be avoided

@ninanando
@ninanando Месяц назад
heavily agree with all you said. Despite not having seen the movie yet, (might today finally), i kinda got a clue already from the jump when the trailer released with more details. I mean like the TX-CAL is obviously ridiculous, so im surprised more people didn’t immediately see that being a catalyst to the main point, especially from an A24 movie. Seen a lot of reviews already and would agree this one is by far probably the most well articulated one I’ve seen. I’m a leftist, but reviewers like Grace Randolph complaining about it not spoon feeding the possibility of a civil war in modern day with left vs right irl america hypotheticals is just not a great idea. The polarization that it would cause as part of the plot would completely defeat the purpose of the movie. I don’t need this movie to pander to my own personal beliefs to imagine my own narrative if I wanted to. Its fiction. You can take whatever you want from it to imagine a real war in our country now, but the movie is literally just a vague warning of what the horror and hyper dehumanization would look like. Its about unity, not documentation.
