My upstairs neighbor threw various heavy objects on the floor and yelled because I asked him not to blast rap music during quiet hours. Quiet hours start at 10 pm. He’s unemployed (even before COVID) so he's home all day listening to music too loudly. But I never say anything and just wear my Beats (I work from home). I only ask that I can sleep at night and he throws tantrums, ranting about it all night into the next morning. What the hell is wrong with him that he thinks not being able to play music on a surround sound with the volume all the way up in the middle of the night is worth getting violently angry over? No wonder he was fired

As I read this comment wishing I had a neighbor like you, my neighbor above me is pacing back & forth & very aggressively, talking on the phone loundly.. he was loud last night from 8pm til 2am than now 7am-9am..its like he barely sleeps & is bored so he has to be disruptive to feel like he doing something..worse neighbor i ever had above me..i been here for 5yrs..what this has taught me is if I cannot get a house move on the top floor cause you never know which neighbor you'll run across..i know i wouldn't be like him..id be considerate, not just throwing things on the ground, pacing consistently back & forth..moving furniture often like he bored & is playing tetras..cant wait to move out in 10 months..

@@flashmodeify You kidding? Sweeping just helps all that dust fill up the air again. Wet scrubbing the floor would be better, but it's more troublesome and may increase wear on the lamels. I'm allergic, i need to do this every day, carpet looks like a nightmare to me.

I think the guy above me is building an ark. The constant hammering, nailing and drilling is annoying!!! Then there is the woman who lives down the hall, her cat sprays. You can smell it in the hallway. She smokes weed and cigarettes. And has cockroaches and bedbugs. Glad there are a few apartments between us. I feel really sorry for the people who live immediately beside and above, below her.

I feel you , I had the same problem till I get so sic of it after 2 months I went to the manager and finally she stopped her noise cause we got an argument and I threatened her to call the owner of the building .

Yesterday I was flooded with a tsunami coming through my bathroom ceiling for around an hour I ran upstairs and was furiously banging on the bitches door and she wouldn't answer I was shouting through her letterbox telling her to turn her water off and she was just fkn standing there! I want to punch her face in so bad! I said 5 yrs in a comment I made but looking back its more like 8 yrs plus ive been putting up with this and ive tried EVERYTHING!!! the legal way now im starting to think other thoughts which is not like me at all im on the brink of snapping!! im angry everyday the thought of them coming home when they have been out for an hour makes me physically sick!! It's why most place require an underpad to be installed for all flooring. The problem is most folks don't know about underpads and most condos aren't willing to check if it's adequate.

Well, there's the thing that usually in offices there are way more sounds, most of the time it's never quiet, even when no one is aroud. You have an exhaustor or the cooling system, etc.

It's because office buildings are made with concrete. Many apartment and condo buildings cheap out and use wood between units.

Yep, part of screening your next unit/home should be checking for these things. Sometimes it’s hard to know unless you stay there for some time unfortunately. Luckily mine is built pretty thick (post 2008) newer built buildings tend to be getting the message I think.

I didn't expect to miss my office whatsoever, but I have to admit that it was wonderfully devoid of shouting small children, probably-small noises being amplified to jarring levels by flimsy wood-frame walls and floors, and the apartment management's sudden bizarre conviction that this is the perfect time to embark on pressure-washing and twice-a-week all-day leaf-blowing projects. (And, since I'm probably the "annoyingly loud neighbor" when I call my parents or listen to the news, I also miss the ability to have normal-volume phone conversations without worrying that I'm either deeply irritating my neighbors or giving them an accidental trove of personal information.)

My downstairs neighbours used to drill holes repeatedly in the wall, and have a big house party at 9AM on a Sunday morning, every week. Or that's what it sounded like. In fairness, I used to practise karate and start singing in the middle of the night and scoot around the room on my wheelie chair for fun, and sometimes do keepie-ups with my football, so yeah, I think I was the bad upstairs neighbour. I grew up in a detached house so it didn't really occur to me they could hear these things, they never complained and they were pretty noisy themselves so I don't think it made any difference. The only thing that really worried me about them is they used to beat their children quite a lot which was not nice to hear, but then things got better after a while. African parents I guess, they were probably doing badly in their school work and then improved.

In my country it's illegal to hit children so it's quite rare. However at that time I was living in a different country and all my neighbours were Africans. In African countries hitting your children is not just legal but actively encouraged. It's the same in many other areas of the world of course, but quite different to modern Western culture. Not sure what religion has to do with anything, there are many African countries which practise the same religion as my home country, even the same sect of Christianity, but the culture couldn't be more different.

Nah, I'm pretty sure tribal peoples beat their children, and I'm 100% sure that people outside of Europe were beating their children long before the arrival of monotheistic religions. They do it in polytheistic India quite a lot too. If you read pre-Christian Middle Eastern texts you will find that the Pagan Sumerians and Assyrians were extremely violent towards their wives and children also. It was Christianity more than anything else which put an end to this in Western society. Christ says 'turn the other cheek' after all.

@@rohitmeena827 the solution is simple: to tell them or to move if they won't stop (unless you have some kind of leverage to persuade their landlord to threaten eviction). Unless they have kids, who are the source of the noise, then you're screwed (like me). I complained many times with my previous neighbours but they said they can't simply put a small kid in chains. right now I'm just forcing myself to get accustomed, because it's quarantine time and they are stuck inside 24/7, it must be tough for a family with kids. but when the quarantine will be over and the schools will re-open I will force my spineless self to go talk to them if they keep on making noise. so that they at least do something about the chairs. if you are dealing with kids too, I suggest you buy sound canceling headphones. if you can't, use earplugs and add normal headphones on top of those, playing the youtube video 'celestial white noise' at high volume.

Omg I know this is old but you made me feel seen. I am the nicest and calmest person. I get sad more than I get mad. But my upstairs neighbor has enraged me to the point of physical symptoms and illness. It's nearly impossible to manage the stress. He throws heavy objects on the ground while shouting ”shut the fuck up” at his girlfriend who asks him to be quiet. He blasts rap music all day and night. I never thought I'd be the neighbor to use a broom on the ceiling but I am now because I’ve asked him a million times to not play music during quiet hours (it's in our lease) and he still does it every night. It frustrates me so much that he knows he’s keeping me awake and doesn’t care. I shouldn't have to remind him of quiet hours every night

Call the police and file a legitimate noise complaint if they don’t stop. If it’s in your lease, you can take them to court over it. Document the evidence.

LOL I got my own house but it's a row house.... The side on the left is completely quiet but the side on the right is a complete disaster. There is a Turkish muslim family there they yell at each other every day and the son is running around the house like a maniac the whole day the daughter is screaming all the time and don't forget about the furnitures that get moved every 30 seconds. Luckily they do sleep around 10 pm precisely every day though but wake up around 7 - 9 am and the noise starts again. Father every morning has to scream for god knows what... All you can do is hope they will some day move out

The rent for this housing association bedsit isn't cheap and I can't move to another room to escape the noise from above. Even the grasscutter earlier was a nice, non-anxiety creating noise. Soundproofing is rubbish in most dwellings.

Correct. It can be really annoying to the point that it impacts your health overall. What I do: practice mindfulness and kindness, try to block noise, disengage with neighbors, do not want to fall into a spiral of conflict, concentrate and focus on what I need to do, work on my plans (finish my doctorate), and then, soon after graduation, find another place. Next time, I will be looking for an upstairs, top place.

Don't feel bad if you do this, because I broke mine after two weeks of pure hell in my last apartment! The manager completely lied to me about everything until I signed (what felt like my soul) on the lease. As soon as I moved in the neighbors were screaming at each other, music/TV blasting all day and the kids were left to run around like feral animals until they passed out! Not to mention the disturbed group of people (violent drug dealers with dogs that escaped their yard frequently) that were living in the wooded area behind the complex that I was immediately warned about after I moved in! That terrified me! So if it's possible, for you're own sanity I *highly* recommend you get outta there and at least get yourself a detached house! Even if you have neighbors that are still shitty (like my new ones that blast music and let their dogs bark for hours and hours), at least they're not above or attached to your walls. Best of luck to you! 💔

I think a formal complaint is also possible, you need to talk to your building manager. You can even sue them for making so much noise if it’s starting to affect your mental health.
