See one of the most amazing gem opals from Lightning Ridge Australia. The striated pattern has never been seen before in a gem of this size. People were calling it fake so I took it down to the godfather of gem authentication Anthony Smallwood in Sydney to prove the gem was real.
He was amazing that such an opal actually existed. Looking as close to lizard skin pattern as found in synthetic opal. But it's real and is proven in this video. Enjoy!
blackopaldirect... In this video we have expert gemologist Anthony Smallwood authenticating our newest opal The Rainbow Serpent. See more of the best opal at blackopaldirect.com and Justin will take you on a journey into the Australian opal world.

Possibly the most beautiful gemstone of all time? Certainly in my eyes. A diamond can refract a rainbow, under the right circumstances, but this carries the rainbow within itself. Wonderful, truly wonderful.

Okay, you win, that's the finest black opal I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty. Not the blackest, but the color play, on those beautifully striated patterns, wow! To think of the impossibly perfect conditions it took to create that stone, once in a lifetime like you said; if you're lucky.

Justin, sir, I bet you SH-T your pants when you uncovered that pattern ! I just about did just watching this video. Let me explain… You know I’ve been following you for a year now, and I’ve watched at least 90% of your content, sometimes can’t get enough so I watch my favorites over and over again. I’ve heard you speak of The Rainbow Serpent, but I’ve never actually seen it - until now. And OMG ! Right ? Right ? RIGHT !!! That is an amazing gem ! I would love to have watched you cut that one. I’d also love to watch you cut a true Harlequin as well. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 !

We were the exclusive Gilson Created Opal worldwide grower/cutters production and marketing schedulers for almost 25 years. I find this to be a most fascinating video. I've seen productions from Lambina that appear close to this construct. I've also had Gilson productions that don't display the typical "lizard skin" on the vertical that one usually sees as proof positive of lab growth. At any rate, we are still the oldest Australian opal specialist company in America. Our roots began with my Dad in Australia in 1938. The business will likely fade to history when I do, but it's been a phenomenal run. And even while we had the Gilson productions exclusively, until the production ceased and we sold off the stocks, we always had, as our main focus, the fantastic natural opal from Australia. And we still do, to this day. Thanks, Justin, for the work you are doing. Very informative and very well done.

As the stone rotates, you can see natural variations in the pattern--some straw pattern showing up in spots. I think with synthetic opals, won't the synthetic pattern be "perfect"? At least I've not seen synthetic opal with such natural-looking variation in the pattern. Makes it all the more beautiful--stunning actually.

Oddball question I am sure but, it just struck me at first glance, that opal was formed from a fossilized squid or something similar, am I correct? I ask because I've seen some videos of belemnites and the shape of this gem looks EXTREMELY similar to a belemnite section. It could be interesting to know if opals that formed in different ways (seam, boulder, fossil, nobbie, etc) have specific patterns that are more or less common due to the way it formed. In my head if one wanted to find a gem with a similar pattern one should look more into belemnites whilst for a flagstone pattern, seam opal is probably a better bet... I know odd question but these gems are super interesting and they make my curiosity go wild :D

Hi Justin , great video and awesome gem , thanks ! Yes it is very rare and beautiful pattern but I think many opals have this type of 'tubes' but in most cases because of the shape of the rough or thin color bar you are unable to cut it 'right way' and expose the pattern - btw. I always thought that this is how the 'real or perfect' - ribbon mackerel pattern - should look like ? regards Dom
@blackopaldirect
@blackopaldirect 8 лет назад
+Opal Kingdom You are right about the columns being in alot of opal. This one is just an exquisite example of the phenomenon. It s not ribbon pattern as ribbon pattern rolls but it is close to Mackerel pattern.
