Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
Buying rough opal is a risk that doesn't always pay off, but when it does, that's the stuff that keeps us opal-holics coming back!
How do you know if the rough opal you're investing in will be worth it? Short answer... you don't. But there are a few things you can look out for.
Let me show you how I deal with the risk of buying rough opal.
Did I just waste $800 big ones? Would I have been better off buying $800 worth of fish tacos? Stay tuned to find out...

@@blackopaldirect I inherited some Ethiopian opals and became very fascinated with your channel. There’s some nice size pieces and I am learning about pricing them how do you determine how much you pay for a raw gem like the ones you show on your channel? I don’t have the equipment to turn them into something beautiful but would love to get them into your hands. Thanks in advance for any info leading into the right direction

12:30... One of the things I love most about your videos is when you are on the wheel and narrating off camera. You wish for us to all be safe. Thank you... every night, I pray that my favorite content creators on RU-vid (you included) are blessed and safe, too. ... then I realize the difference a year can make. Last year I lived in my main house in the suburbs of a nice city. I've since sold that house and moved to the family estate - a small parcel of land (just about 6 hectares/15 acres) that is off grid, entry/exit roads visible for miles with motion sensors along the way... and as you say you wish us safety, I realize I am wearing bullet-proof body armor and not giving it a second thought due to how common it is now for me and my family to be armored and armed. We have our Covid masks and our lead-stoppers... ... and I realize how much America has changed over less than a year.

Thank you for your contribution to producing great quality videos for us as a whole to get away from the problems of the World. All of my knowledge, which is VERY limited, comes from watching your videos. I always try to value the opals before you say how much they are worth. I have actually surprised myself several times by coming either within $25 a carat to being dead on with your appraisal. This wasn't one of those times because of underestimating how much the rare colors can affect value. I valued this stone at $250-$300 a carat. All I know is that I love your videos and how you share your thoughts on value and explain how to tackle a rough opal to get the most out of each one. Your videos have me thinking about buying a cabbing machine and a couple hundred carats of beginner rough opal to try my hand at it. I really just wanted to say thank you for sharing your vast knowledge with the rest of us, and keep up the great work and videos.

Each stone is like a Christmas present, you don't know until you open it. Love watching you bring out the best.

Thank you. I've been given a few small chips of opal as practice pieces. I like to see you work as it shows me how and where to look for the signs of colour.

Hey I just wanted to say that I really love your videos. Watching you take a piece of stone with a small visible line of color and turn it into these beautiful gems is quite incredible. Hope to see more of your videos soon

I've enjoyed watching you make or break an opal. You haven't lost anything, but you did gain all your money back. Everything about this game is about risk, much like gambling your money away at the casino. Where the house away wins! Dangerous game your playing at, I would have to believe being a master stone cutter reduces your losses. Good luck!
