judo is amazing, and you gain great grip and body strength. You also get to practice a bit of bjj in judo, which is called ne waza, since bjj comes from judo. I started training bjj and in it I got curious about throws, so judo is the one to compliment it, but I ended up falling in love with judo. Great martial art. And remember this next time you want to try something great and new out of your comfort zone but you're felling a bit scared: "I've only ever regretted the things I didn't do"

I am familiar with that technique of breaking the fall by slamming your arms on the side but it would be interesting to have an explanation about the physics involved, because it's so hard to imagine how and in what way it works, and how effective it is. Visually it doesn't look like it would help at all, even though it does. When I say familiar I only mean that I have known about the technique, but don't have much practical experience

Weight distribution over a larger surface area reduces the impact at any one point. Using the flattest surfaces of straightened out arms prevents impact on joints, reducing fracture risk.

I have a question, does this 0:55 works for concrete floor or asphalt? From what I've heard this only works for MMA tournaments or Judo tournament because they use mat. When it comes to self defense in real life you should let your body take the fall or try not to get thrown in the first place. Which is why Judo throw in self defense/real life is actually deadly.
@tylerjamesnewton1422
@tylerjamesnewton1422 Год назад
The answer is yes, it is much better than letting the end of your wrist bone take the brunt of the fall. You are training muscle memory not to put too much weight or impact on the wrists while breaking the fall with your hands and redirecting kinetic energy. Source - I am a skateboarder learning judo to fall with less chance of injury.

When falling, is it better to hold your breath and just exhale when getting up? I think I'm knocking the wind out of myself every time I try these falls. 😅
@aspiesoft
@aspiesoft 5 месяцев назад
Never hold your breath. Breathing is one of the most important parts of any martial art. Holding your breath is what will cause the wind to get knocked out of you. When being thrown, you should exhale smoothly, strongly, and continuously.

Good to practice to get confidence and use to the interta of impacting, but the only real practice for falling is getting thrown around by older, stronger guys. Like when you're young and your bones are still flexible. Now at 40, and pretty much off the mat for over 20 years, When slipped on the ice instinctively broke my fall, still hurt much more than I recall. I think gravity must be stronger than when I was 19?

Does the back of your hand ever hit the mat or is it the palm? I ask this because it happens so fast its hard to tell, but im watching videos of guys getting thrown all kinds of ways and it appears so. And, sometimes the hands dont hit the mat at all, but the feet do before the butt does. One of my sensei's told me "oh heck no, chicken bones will break. palm only"

Anti inflammaties, ice, heat, if you can take those, I would also go to a Dr. To see if you have some gland or immune that causes easy bruising. That would suck.

Do you slap before hitting the ground on all the break fall types?
@siddified
@siddified 2 месяца назад
@@janzafar7577hmm good question. All of them? I think so, side yes, forward yes, backward yes, being thrown, yes... I have to add, in most cases I also try to push away while 'slapping' to disperse the angle or vector of the fall. So for example, falling forward I'd fall onto my arms without letting my elbows hit the ground and pull myself forward a bit while I touchdown, making it a teeny little bit of a slide. If you know what I mean. It disperses the energy of the impact even more. I was taught this once for backward breakfalls and I found it works for most if not all of them.
