I’m sure Garp was aware, as he’s blamed Shanks for thinking he got being a pirate into Luffy’s mind. Plus Garp was sharp enough to know he couldn’t take Luffy to the marines to grow up, due to Dragon being his dad, and he’d likely be killed. So waited for him to get old enough to show he could be a marine.

Nami had also worn the straw hat during the skypiea arc, again as a source of comfort. In the manga colour pages Nami can also be seen wearing or holding the straw hat on a few occasions

The way you described the straw hat “hiding until it found its longterm owners” was a pretty good description for the One Ring and the way it’s characterized in LotR.

you're not the only one grandlinereview,while i'm alright with her tan being changed(i love it but it makes sense given where she was for a long time,the other strawhats skin changed over time and the tan was added by the anime.would love to see a top 5 times the anime was better 3 with this being no. 1.) i do miss the cowboy hat(still remember it the most in the hikari e opening & bon voyage.the openings that some up my introduction to one piece/shonen jump in general.:3) and hope we see it in at least a color spread.(grandlinereviewer should do a top 10 color spreads.:3) the strawhat kinda reminds me of the headband in street fighter with it's meaning being passed down(like how ryu's white one in the alpha series was from a friend of gouken called sayaka,kens was originally a ribbon for his long hair before being given to ryu to help him focus/as a makeshift band-aid in street fighter 2:the animated movie/remind him of why he fights like luffy wears it to remind him of his goal/shanks refusing to take it back yet and sakura changes hers to red showing her newfound growth.:3) i love nami's use of the strawhat(wish we saw it in the timeskip though i can really see tama having that role for her growth/wano's renewel.) since it really shows how close enough he is to give it to a friend (while i am just as happy seeing them just remaining as friends as i would be seeing luffy get hooked up with her and/or boa hancock as i think oda writes romance rather well he just doesn't put to much focus on it or obligatorily puts it in like other shonen jump series and focuses on plot and character interaction,i love how it shows his trust to her as he could easily give it to usopp,franky with his cyborg abilities,brook or chopper if he was purely worried about it's safety.) compared to robin who while luffy had a slightly aggressive reaction to her taking it but was okay with her joining up and risking his life for her and i think sweet pea's has enough of a meaning since luffy's meeting with margueite(really want to see her,the kuja pirates,boa hancock & her sisters return in the next arc and help the strawhats out along with the grand fleet and nico robin's cowboy hat.:3) led to him being helped by hancock(would love to see her wear luffy's straw hat & the sweet pea example now makes me want to see her and her sisters reaction to luffy's "family jewels".) who helped continue his adventure to the new world.(and find very underrated in that aspect.) still find it funny as heck garp(who'd probably be pissed knowing that with his interactions with the users that have influenced his grandson/adopted sons to piracy.) of all people gave proto-luffy(love that luffy actually looks older in the pre one piece stories & hope we get an adaptation of ryuma's story "monsters" in wano since i've wanted that ever since he showed up in thriller bark.) the strawhat and wonder what dragon's reaction to it may be when he and luffy meet eventually.

Honestly I believe that Luffy can’t truly become Pirate King while he wears the straw hat or has the “straw hat” title. Roger passed it onto Shanks once he became a legend to the world, Shanks passed it on to luffy and soon after became a Yonko. That’s why I find it interesting that Luffy will give the hat back Shanks after he becomes a great pirate. It completely drops the meaning and significance of the concept of inherited will in the series. Which leads me to believe that most likely Shanks will die before Luffy returns it meaning he has to pass it on to the next generation
