Hi Scott, Thanks for this tutorial. I live in a ~1400 square-foot, 2.5 bath house in the mountains of North Carolina where the groundwater is full of sediment and runs between 52 and 54°F. My house came with a titan N-180 electric tankless hot water heater (manufacturing date 5/15) that draws 75 amps on two 40 amp breakers. I replaced the well pump in 2020 after the addition of a spin down filter between the well water intake and the whole house filter failed to solve the problem of having to change the whole house filter frequently. The spin down filter seems to be doing its job (not much sediment in the whole house filter) but the hot water heater fails intermittently. I hired a plumber last week because the heater was providing lukewarm water. The titan N-180 has three elements, the first of which had a mild amount of visible external scale. The plumber reset the two thermostats, but also said they had not been tripped. For reasons the plumber didn’t understand, I had and still have hot water following this intervention. I am considering replacing the Titan with a Stiebel Eltron. The plumber gave me an estimate for a Steibel Eltron 24, which requires a minimum of two 50 amp breakers. The estimate did not mention the need for electrical work. The Steibel Eltron 20 would work with my two 40 amp breakers but, in this climate, could provide one shower at a time. It’s essentially the equivalent of the Titan and I may consider it. The other option is liquid propane (natural gas is not available here). I have some gas infrastructure in place because a previous owner installed a gas logs fireplace. According to the gas company, I would need additional infrastructure as well as venting and a 120 V outlet provided by an electrician. Also, I am aware that some states are banning new gas appliances due to environmental concerns and protecting the environment is important to me. Finally, the tech at Titan advised me to ship the heater to them in Florida for a $60 repair. That seemed very odd to me. I would appreciate your perspective. Thanks.

@user-ib6wi9yw8w well this will be a long answer lol. So as someone who is in an all propane home, with Navien LP gas tankless, I will always recommend gas tankless over electric 100% of the time! You’re asking more from that Titan than it can give without blowing its brains out every time it runs. The Steible Eltron 24 or 28 would be a better choice but you WILL have to upgrade the power. At that cost, you might as well just get your LP Company to put in a l in sightly larger tank and drop in a Navien. Rinnai has relationships with most LP companies and they are a good unit, but the Navien is better in a lot of ways. I’ll be detailing them in a later video (So subscribe! Haha) A LP tankless uses about 100 gallons of gas a year for the average family. Now about the environment concern. All of this electrification stuff is more about lining pockets of politicians. Think about this, our electricity mainly still comes from coal or gas. If we put solar panels on every inch of farmland in the US we could not power it. (and we’d all starve) All of the big solar farms in my state of VA are on…FARMLAND! (Bad idea big time) Offshore wind is killing whales although nobody wants to talk about that. (You can look that up online though about all the dead whales washing up during the winter months) The “Save the Whales” crowd are the same bunch pushing offshore wind! And don’t look up the pollution of what happens when they need maintenance or break down and dump oil in the ocean. Batteries for all these electric cars come from China and have a look at largest polluter on the planet…China. Strip-mining worldwide and killing forest and wildlife for that lithium to go into the batteries. (We’re supposed to look the other way on that too I guess) Clean burning, Low NOx gas has been the best way to power stuff and make heat and hot water for decades now, and we are the middle east of Gas! (There just is not nearly as much politician greasing for that to be attractive to them on either side of the isle.) A 36kw from Rheem actually does a solid job in the winter here in MA… but to your point running the electrical was a huge pain in the ass. I had to run 8 gauge for each of the 4 heating elements to 4x 40 amp double pole breakers. We only have 2 bathrooms and can run both showers with it at the same time for 11 months out of the year. If you live in an area like we do where it gets cold from November to March then you’re crazy to get anything less than 36kw and ABSOLUTELY make sure it modulates! My Rheem has been doing great for us in a 2100 square foot home

Good to know. I live in western MA and have been looking into whether a propane or electric would work best. I have a 5 room ranch with 1 bath and forced hot water for heat so thinking electric is probably what I should purchase.

Great info for the layman! Best advice from you to me: hire a professional to size and install unit. What do you think about using a recirculating pump that can be switched on and off at point of use? Give it a minute to get the hot water to the point of use and then use the hot water. Seems like an idea that might work and save on wasted water and gas/electricity costs, too.

Those on demand systems work great. They have some that use your cold water line as a return as well. This one even has a timer on it so you can set it for your peak times and then have it not run at all. amzn.to/2KhzTUT

Scott Gregg 👍 the next vid might be too late for me...the tank heater is developing a pin hole stain and the wife’s getting nervous. The Stiebel still your recommendation? Two bath ,3 people 24W or 29W? South Florida location. Update: bought the Stiebel Eltron 29w (had HD 10% coupon) did the plumbing install myself and paid for electric install...all in less $2k even using all “shark bite” hardware, still more than a premium tank (which is what I wanted) but the wife was really into tankless. Set at 115deg. Wife is happy again.

Just FYI here in North Florida I have a well and it's 77 degrees right now in August. I think in Winter it only goes down to 72. Very helpful video.

with about 18 years selling, installing and fixing tankless water heaters, I can tell you if you can have gas...GET A GAS ONE! Preferably a Navien. That is the best one on the market today by a good measure. They are not cheap and they are not DIY, but you'll be very happy for a long time. Keep in mind I don't know you and can't make a nickel off this recommendation. Have a nice day and thank you for the comment.

The video is 6 years old. Technology has changed but this is one of the most informative videos I've seen on RU-vid. Scott, you have a way of delivering hours worth of information in 15 minutes. My son, who lives in Stuart Florida (2 baths, wife and 3 daughters = high hot water requirements ) needs to replace his 50 gallon tank soon. No gas, 200 amp service. @charlie2265 Look into SioGreen. They are FL based and their technology is pretty cool. I wish they made one in a 28kw and 32kw unit for the cooler climates. As for the rest of them, there really has not been much in the way of advancement. They all still use high-watt-denisty elememnts. I have a tankless heater for only a hand sink and one shower. Since it has gotten colder my shower isn't getting hot. The water temperature and temp. rise explained a lot. Note: It's not only guy who wanted this video. Thanks.

Good video and thanks. I have an electric tankless on a well in michigan. I never have a problem as long as i flush my lines with white vinegar and let is soak for a day before flushing it with water......once a year to get rid of scalding in the unit. Its simple to do and will allow your unit to perform at its best. Flushing is recommended for ALL tankless, elect or gas.

Great information! I’m building a 2400 square-foot house out in the country which will have a 2 1/2 bathrooms and two people living in the house. I’m glad that I know now to have a conversation with the electrician before this is installed. I really don’t want to have to have propane, I want to have all electric. In addition to electrical service I’m going to have solar as well and a back up solar storage battery for the whole house.

I like my Seisco. It's a 28 kw unit. Model RA-28. 4 heaters. A whole house unit. I wired it up myself. Our water is well water for our town, but it's held in 6 tanks up on the hillside before it arrives here. So the water is very warm in the summer out here in the AZ desert. Sometimes warm enough to take a shower with cold only water. The research I did on Seisco showed that their warranty response to a problem was superior to everyone else. That's my experience with them as well. Our unit is 3.7 years old and works fine. Far cheaper than propane !!

It may be cheaper than Propane there but it is reversed in other areas of the country. Siesco is a great unit for sure and thank you for telling folks here how well it's working for you.

@@scottnra The other reason I switched off of propane was because every time there is a house fire here, it's propane related. I sure hope it's cheaper. $2.40/ gallon here without delivery fees, which are 50 cents a gallon, just seems far too high.

ours is probably about that here. But it takes less $ of gas to make hot water than electricity in my area. This is NOT true for all areas haha. I also like cooking with gas. I use about 300 gallons per year, gas range, gas fireplace, gas grill, two gas tankless, and an infrared in the garage. (A lot of it goes through the GRILL! haha)

@@scottnra Natural gas is a lot cheaper than propane here. But we don't have gas in our town, only in the town 40 miles away. Our isolation makes propane so expensive. I love grilling with propane. That's about all I use propane for. My propane furnace eats it fast. So I went to all electric heating this past winter. Worked ok. Propane really heats well.

Thanks for the info. We live in Maine, which leads itself to a gas-fired unit. However, we have solar heating (vacuum tubes on the roof) that heats a 300-gallon solar tank. The well water loops through that before going to the boiler. We are now installing solar pv, so I am still leaning toward an electric tankless.

STOP! I have news for you. The Navien gas tankless water heater has a setting that is for working with solar or geo systems. It will let you feed hot water from your storage tank THROUGH the Navien, and only operate the burners if the water is not already to the set point temperature! That is your PERFECT solution and there are no other tankless water heaters on the market built to run like that. Find a local Navien Expert and have them work with your solar guy. (Plus electric tankless would be a huge draw on your PV system you don't need.!)

Very informative thank you. Up here in Canada, gas is the way to go for the reasons you have pointed out. Also the cost of electricity here would make running an electric instant water heater almost prohibitive, not even mentioning the cost to upgrade the panel.

Thanks for the video. I'm planning out my next house and was considering buying an electric tankless, but after hearing your explanation of water temp rise, I realize that my Missouri well water is going to be far too cold for this kind of heater.

Correct! Do yourself a big favor and look into the NAvien NPE-A model GAS tankless water heaters. Even if you have to run it on LP gas, you are going to be be much more happy with it than any tank. I live in an area without natural gas. I put a 500Gal LP tank in the ground and use about 300 gallons per year. We run TWO tankless water heaters, a gas fireplace, a gas range, gas grill, and a Ir heater in the garage. Most of your gas use is from cooking and the fireplace. The average home will use about 100 gallons of LP a year for hot water...endless hot water. The Navien's SS heat exchangers will handle your temperature rise and well water just fine. I hope that helps.

@mrRoverkane to simplify it this might help. 1. Are you going to sell the house or rent it within 10 years? no is good for tankless yes, get another tank. 2. Do you need more hot water than you currently are getting? no=tank Yes Tankless 3. Do you have the extra money to spend on the upgrade? But better yet, (and I know everyone can't do it) a propane tank get;s you into a gas fired NAvien and you'd be way happpier "IF" you need more hot water than you currently can get from the tank. With todays prices, it's getting a lot better on price differential. I built a house in an all electric area and had a propane tank put in. Gas range, fireplace, grill and tankless all covered. A local Propane company probably has a great deal too that could get your grill hooked up as well, and regardless of LP pricing it's still cheaper to make hot water with propane than electric in almost every area of the country. Nice video. One complication with well water is that the flow rate is constantly changing as the pressure tank fills and drains. The water heater must constantly hunt for the right power level. My water heater does not slam on and off, but when it is running, I can hear the utility's transformer humming.

@@scottnra I'm being picky, but if you have a pressure tank, the flow is going to vary as the pressure cycles between the high and low setpoints on your pressure switch. I noticed the variation years ago when I watched my lawn sprinkler.

7000' in mts of NM , snow from late Nov. through april . Bosch US 7 ( 7 KW) run hot water great just got to get use on modulating flow rate to get desired temp, of course low flow shower head , and all water appliances on one wall, inlet water 50 deg +/- 4 . easily up to 95 deg.

That's cool. Thank for the input. You obviously get it and you know you have to control the flow so it does not over run what the heater can do. Believe it or not, most people have no idea about that. This is why I recommend the higher amp units and flow control built in.

I’m in Henrico VA on city water. I have a small 2 bedroom home to myself. The only things I use hot water for is the shower and to wash dishes. The washer I only use cold water. I’m going to upgrade to a 200 amp breaker box when I get the power run underground. The place I would mount the tankless unit would be a very short distance from both the kitchen sink and the shower, between them.

I'm in Hanover and been training plumbing contractors for years in the area. Most around here have little to no respect for electric mainly because they don't understand it. This means that finding a good installer can be a real challenge and even worse if it needs maintenance. You sound like a good candidate for it. You'll need to consult an electrician about the power. Personally I am a much bigger fan of gas but know not everyone has it available. If you have gas, Look at a smaller NAvien and overall you will be a lot happier.

Scott Gregg If gas can be from a propane tank then maybe that may work but there is no gas in this community that I know of. I may also have to reconsider the location I want the heater installed. I was thinking it could be mounted inside the stud wall instead of on the surface. Plus it seems to need a separate breaker box other than the house panel box. I may have to see if it can be mounted inside, hidden in a kitchen cabinet like some smaller under the counter tank heaters are.

Hi Scott! You should be an instructor! I live in a tropical climate and am installing an 18kW tankless electric water heater. Because this unit is not within sight of the Circuit Breaker panel, Irealize I need to provide a disconnect safety switch. My understanding for installation purposes on these type of units is that each heating element will require (1) 2-pole breaker for every heating element the unit has. If you have (1) heating element, you'll need (1) 2-pole breaker... If you have (3) heating elements, you need (3) 2-pole breakers, etc... Now, if you need to install a disconnect safety switch inbetween your breaker panel and your tankless electric water heater and say for simplicity, you have a (2) element tankless water heater, you will need a 4-pole single-throw diconnect swtich, right? The NEC says that all ungrounded cunductors shall make/break their respective connections SIMULTANEOUSLY. Therefore, having (2) separate 2-pole disconnect safety switches will not satisfy the SIMULTANEOUS make/break requirement. How is everyone getting around this dilema? You can find a 4-pole disconnect switch, but it won't be a light/general duty unit. The only ones I could find were of the Heavy Duty NEMA 3R type costing around $1500+ (Three times the cost of the water heater). The only alternative I see is installing a subpanel near the breaker and having your (2) 2-pole breakers contained within. Of course, you'll have to install an 80-100A branch feeder breaker as well as increase your wire capacity size to feeder sizes. How would you handle this? No one seems to want to answer this question leading me to believe the subpanel is the only feasible and practical way to go. Thanks for ANY input you can provide me.

Florida, my house is large, however I have two 200 amp service/panels, two hot water heaters, etc. I'm looking to replace one of the hot water heaters in my garage (50-gal) with a tankless electric.I know you're a fan of Stiebel but curious which size to get. This heater has the following attached to it: two kitchen sinks, HE dishwasher, bar sink, outdoor sink, a single bathroom (w/shower, but rarely used, as it's a second guest bathroom), a laundry sink, and a clothes washer. Sounds like a lot, but it's rare any of those are used simultaneously and we don't use much hot water. Thanks again!!

@@scottnra thanks again, I did have a further question while I have your attention, I am in a hard water area, due to costs (I'm not rich, I can do plumbing but need a sparky to wire too, were without any hot water atm) I was wondering if you think the tankless water heater I choose would be OK for a month or two without a hard water filter (thats going to cost me another £1200 apparently) and if i can then flush the heater before I fit the filter, or if you know of a cheap home fit filter or something? Assuming that tank is powered, that is the same thing as the Supercharger from Seisco. It's a small electric after a tank that acts as a booster for when the tank starts losing temperature.

(The next generation of the NCB-E) It's a combi and will replace that crappy oil boiler AND provide endless hot water. Ok, need a little help. I have an existing A.O. Smith EC 66 920 72 Gal. Electric Hot Water Heater. Would like to replace it with a tankless system. This existing water heater mostly serves the Master Suite area of the house. The fixtures fed from this heater are; Master Bath: Ondine Shower system with Shower head-Shower Wand-3 Body Spray Jets, His sink, Her sink, Jacuzzi Tub; Guest Bath: Sink, Media Room Bar: Cup-sink. The Bar cup-sink and Guest Bath sink are sparingly used. At the Master Bath, it would be fairly rare that the Jacuzzi would be used at the same time as the shower, but it is possible that the shower would be in use at the same time as at least 2 sink. So that's what I'm holding as critical. I live in the Midwest, ground water temp charted at 52 Degrees yielding a water temp rise of 58-60 Degrees to 110. What size and or type of electric tankless water heater/system do I need or would you recommend?

Michael Mims non. you are going to need to go to a gas unit for that kind of flow rate. Even an LP one is going to save you a TON over any electric anything. Simple solution for northern states. Install a forty or fifty, or bigger! gallon water tank inside your home. Temp control will keep the water a bit warmer. And the tankless will be able to heat easier and faster. Yes, it takes space in your home, but if you want tankless, it may be worth it.

@@scottnra not everyone has the option of gas. Some places don't have natural gas lines. And some cities won't allow propane tanks within city limits. So it's an option. Also can add an extra pou at the supply line into the home, that slightly warms the water before it gets to the main heater. Thought about that later after I posted. Thanks for the info!

Take it from a licensed electrician.....if your breaker panel has enough spaces available, just add a 2 pole 100 amp breaker and install #2 SER cable (available at all local electrical supply stores). It'll have 1 black, 1 red, 1 white, 1 bare aluminum conductors in it. It'll save time trying to determine what you need for the tankless. Install a 125 amp 6 space main lug panel next to the unit. You're likely to need all 6 spaces to wire in the circuits to feed power to the tankless. Most of the ones I've hooked up required (3) 40 amp circuits for normal operation.

I always recommend hiring a licensed and insured LOCAL electrician to do that work. What if their breaker panel has enough space but is already at or over it's capacity? You can install a 100 amp breaker and run a 120 amp unit off of it through a sub panel? 99% of DIY'er have no business in their electrical panel in my opinion. Seems like a great way to help people burn down their house and void their homeowners policy... Please folks hire a local pro for that stuff or just don't do it at all.

The best education I have found thank you. Here is my situation. N. Fla. Two water heaters. One services only one bathroom, the other a bathroom and kitchen. Older home where using one heater is not an option. Bathroom is space challenged and old home has a 16 inch diameter tank heater which cannot be purchased anymore. Bottom line, what do you recommend for the electric tankless heater in bathroom? I want the best you can recommend. Model, size, kw, and gpm. Thank you so much for your advice.

According to their charts, the Tempra 12 plus would be a minimum. This is the best electric I know if and the only one I would trust as of this time. A size up wouldn't hurt, but I doubt you'd need it there: amzn.to/2PNHLyg

That's what we have here and they work great. No, the gas is not more expensive than electricity. Scott thank you so much for the informative video and for the time that you put in it. It was on pint and answered lots of questions that I had. HOWEVER...... we just recently bought a house northern Nevada. Incorporated was two gas tankless water heater that served the entire three story. Mother in law occupies third floor master bath and bedroom. She has been complaining that hot water is not hot enough. With that said ... we are now renovating the master bath I see it as an opportunity to dedicate an electric tankless water heater for her. One shower head and 51 gallon bath tub. My question Scott is there any benefit to run existing hot water supply line to inlet of tankless heater? Haven’t found a heater yet in process though and doing my homework as well. I’m an electrical contractor and we will be hiring a plumbing contractor. Well water is as you said 45° F out of the tap. Out of the hot water tap we’re looking at 114° not hot enough for Mother in law. What is your take on this? I would be greatly appreciated for a little more of your time.

Aaron Casil What temperature are your tankless water heaters set at? There is not a human on this planet that can actually shower at 114/115. If you filled the tub with 114* water it would kill her. (Seriously) I think your issue might well be an adjustment on the shower valve. They have a scald guard behind the handle (if single handle) that allows you set the mix temp hotter! If single handle pope off the cap and look for a plastic piece with geared edges. Remove the screw, adjust the selector to a hotter position and put it back together. Let's start there first. Hi John, Just from a support and service standpoint I'd go with the Stiebel Eltron but get a PLUS series. While that temp is pretty good, I don't know where you are but would rather go a bit more than not enough and the Plus" part of flow control is well worth a little extra upfront cost.

Ty for answering the amperage question i had. Unbelievable that everyone is going to have to upgrade their panel. Most of these electric tankless need on average 100amps. 7gpm units are 150amps. Thats rediculous. No one will have that open and ready.

Good vid, I get the concerns about flow and understand that most shower heads deliver around 1.5 gpm so in the south ( Florida ) these will do well in a 2 bath home but how would it do in the same home as far as filling a Garden style tub? Way more flow from a tub spout vs a Shower head.

Winthorpe Good Question. By the time you pay for the units and all the new electrical work, you could have paid less for a propane unit for the whole house that would do a better job, and be easier to service. The main brands like Navien have local parts and trained service people. If you put something in that nobody knows how to or wants to work on, it's going to cost you later to replace them instead of fix them. Thank you for watching! You mentioned heating. I'm wondering if there is any system that will take an electric heater and use it as the driver for say a small house with 4-5 small baseboard type heaters? If so how small and unobtrusive could those heaters be and how do you design them? What kind of pumps would be required, activated how and how noisy? I have to admit the first videoI saw where the universal answer was don't do it yourself, your videos are full of good information. Thanks.

Definitely doable, but would take more than I can get into here. Everything to make that work already exists. It would have to be put together by someone that understands hydronics but it a simple HW Baseboard job with a Simple heat source. not a big deal Pumps are silent, relays click, Baseboard sometimes has expansion noise. No big deal. My thing about don't DIY it is simply because 99 out of 100 Homeowners (HOs) think they are better than they are and do about half of their homework before making a real disaster. I have seen a few HO jobs that were actually PERFECT! (but they are the exception not the rule.) The rest just b!tch about contractor pricing, screw up the works and then b!tch more when they have to pay someone to tear it all out and start over haha.

Hi Scott, I learned so much watching your video. Thank you. My gas tank in Las Vegas just broke down. I started solar a few months ago. It seems it would make sense to switch to electric tankless. Would you agree? Is there any new technology we should know about? Are you still recommending the Stiebel Eltron?

@timothymalte6363 As much as any of them for now. I expect to start seeing some advances any day now but technology can't change physics. It is always going to take a certain amount of KWs to heat water. That will be unchanging. The advances I'd want to see are in durability. I still think these are only going to be great for southern climates with warmer incoming water temps. If you are in southern CA you'll be fine. You're the man! I am building a small guest house 800sf with 1.5 baths. We only have 150 amp panel and will be using a mini split system for AC. What are your thoughts on the size unit I need? My guess is that some of my kids will be in and out of the house intermittently.

Jeremy Newman You'll need to consult your electrician first on that pannel. I highly doubt a 150amp pannel will be able to handle it BUT I don't know what part of the country you are building this in and that matters too. 1.5 bath I still would not go under a 24KW unless you are really south, and would do a 28kw if you are further north. I live in Central Florida and on public water service. My household needs are for two baths and a wife who does laundry incessantly. Looking at replacing my 17 year old electric tank system but want to know which tankless system will work best for our demand level. Can you help out here? Joseph Sprowls Your timing is very good. I am about to have a serious look at a FL based electric tankless company that has my attention. SioGreen tankless does not use a high watt density element. (One of the biggest failure points of any electric tank or tankless.) I've talked to them, looked into their product and about 90% of the way to saying this is the future of electric tankless. we're in FL. Your comment on radiant heat caught my attention. MORE heat in the house is unwelcome. Also- if outdoors, it will be like 96 degrees typical so the heater has less work to do. So would an outside-installation be better for us?

Annie Uzer Most electric tankless are not rated for outside installations. The unit itself puts off little to no heat... ever. unlike a tank. Thank you for this video! I had no idea about some models not varying the amount of energy needed, and just snapping on full - that sounds like a power drain! My husband and I just moved into a 1 bath, 810sqft house in DC, and have a 30 year old gas tank water heater that I know is going to go any day. We need to upgrade the electric panel anyway, and I'm debating between an electric tankless and a wall mounted, 30 gallon electric tank water heater to give us room back in the kitchen. If you're still answering questions, would the small tank or the tankless use less energy? I want to get everything off gas.

Great video. We have a 16 year old 30 gallon electric Rheem tank water heater in very good and well maintained condition. However, the home insurance company says we must upgrade the water heater to maintain coverage. However, the utility closet is too small for todays water heaters because the manufacturers, in order to meet the new federal standards set in 2014, haven’t made a 30 gallon water heater small enough to fit. So we have to go to a electric tankless water heater. How many kW does a tankless water heater require?

It is going to depend on your area and number of baths in your house. Most likely 28kw or greater! If you are in the deep south, that's fine, if you are in a colder climate you need to look into propane gas tankless units like the Navien. You will be much better off in the long run. Stiebel Eltron is pronounced "steebel" not "stybel". American here who lived in Germany for decades and worked on these units. These are good units. I would install a Stiebel over a Eco or Rheem. They have copper pipe internals that leak at joints. I Heat is a good one too.

I know it will work great! In FL you have pretty warm incoming water and one of these should do a great job. If you have the panel for it, get a 28kw model, if not, this should work well unless you have the need to run a LOT of showers at once. amzn.to/374SCKu

Hi. Great video. My wife and I live in a small brick ranch 1500 sq ft approx...with a well in Northeast Ohio. average ground temp looks to be around 52ish. I was thinking of going with the Steibel 36 plus electric but now I'm not sure after your video. @ambientnature862 Well keep in mind that you are not showering with straight hot water. Also remember you'll need the panel capacity to run a 36kw unit. Hey Greg, thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us on this subject, I need a electric tankless for a 1-1/2 gpm in Oregon , I really want to stay away from Gas.. I have a Sprinter van with 1300 watts solar on the roof ( I know, it's wild) in Oregon , a 24kwh Tesla house battery (so I have plenty of power) Only other real power drain I have is a 220v mini-split Heat Pump A/C . I need a small form factor 220v electric tankless water heater that controls flow, with the step up elements so it doesn't slam the amperage all at once , what brand and model do you think I should look into?

You are definitely outside the box! haha. Stieble Eltron would be your best bet. They both manage power AND control flow. It's about as good as you can get in electric tankless and they work very well.

@@scottnra I am interested in the Stieble one. The Rheem does modulate power but does not modulate water flow which sucks. I know I can get flow restrictors, but here in the north the water temp changes drastically from winter to summer, so I do not want a permanent device which will then impede me in winter. Keep up the videos :-)

Great video, hit lots of points. I am in the south and am in the market for an electric tankless. It will provide hot water to one full bath, it was an add on. Still have the original 50 gallon tank for the rest of the house. I will get a pro to run new wire from the breaker box to the unit, but will do the install my self. Can you recommend a unit that will give me a break. I am old and really do not know how many hot water heaters I have changed over the years. I like the idea of slowly adding load to the coils, that is bound to add longevity to the unit. My breaker box has the usual 30 amp double pole to the tank now. thanks marvin

Hello Scott, this video is awesome, very informative! At about the 8 minute mark, you explain the difference between the element firing at full 30 amp verses 1 amp based on demand. I called Seisco, they were bought by AO Smith. I called Stiebel Eltron, the sales rep wasn’t able to confirm the model with the modulating current. Do you happen to know the model that has modulating current? I’m looking at a 24KW. Thanks again for the cool video!

Great information. I am considering installing one in my hunting cabin which has one shower and a kitchen sink in central Texas. Two general questions: 1. we turn off the electricity when not there. would that adversely affect the heater? 2. It could possibly freeze sometimes when we are not there, would we need to drain the tank? Would that adversely affect it?

Scott, Thank you so much for this video! Even though it's over 3 years old, it is still very valuable and relevant information. Now may I ask you a question or two? (I hope you are still answering comments on this thread.) I recently bought a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo in the Sarasota FL area. In the next several years, my wife and I plan to move there full time. Currently, it has a 38 gallon tank water heater installed on a 2 pole, 30 amp circuit. The condo building was built in the 1980s, with 150 amp service feeding the unit, and it's all electric - no natural gas. We have been looking at electric tankless water heaters and have softly landed on the EcoSmart 18, which is said to draw 75 amps. My electrician says the service to the condo won't support that size unit. What are your thoughts? Is that a good unit? Can you recommend anything better? Is a tankless even appropriate for that environment? Will my electrical service support it? Any other insights you may have would be appreciated.

Harold Crane Look up SioGreen and tell them I sent you! They are out of FL and the units look like a really great choice for that climate. They DON'T use immersion high watt density elements that will burn out eventually. As for power I'm not an electrician, but you might want to get a second opinion there. As long as you understand what they can and can't do in the winter you can me a good decision for your application. Water can't get much colder than the 30's and you shower at about 104-106* So see what they will give you at a 75-80* rise and if that suits you, go for it.

Hi, great video. We live in Plymouth Mass with well water feed. Inlet temp today is about 52 (don't kow what it would be in winter). Currently we have hot water that is heated through a coil in our oil furnace. We have a one bath house and have upgraded to 200 amp service. Have seen good reviews, including your video, on the Steibel Eltron electric heater. We don't have gas as an option so limited to electric. What size would you rec? @mikea7350 I'd go the biggest you can given that water temp up there. The 36 here is as big as they come: amzn.to/3Jy3i9R You'll need some electrical work to power it correctly. You can also look at converting to a Navien Combi boiler on LP and ditching the oil all together to do both heating and domestic hot water. By the time you do the electric upgrades for the electric tankless and factor in your oil savings, I think you'll be money ahead! Thank you for watching! Hello I recently had a rheem rtex 18 installed in my home and the unit works very well 2 showers no promblem at 112 degrees, my only issue is my lights flickering almost the whole time hot waters on. I was wondering if you think the Steibel Tempra 20 plus maybe a better option in this case and help the lights not continuously flicker while hot waters running?
