I interview Jake Muise, the CEO and Founder of Maui Nui Venison. Jake is an avid free range Axis deer hunter and an expert on dealing with invasive species. Jake and I discuss Axis deer hunting opportunities, the tactics and technology Jake’s team uses to harvest wild Axis deer, the benefits of eating wild game meat, and the potential implications of new technology when it comes to counting and monitoring big game populations.

So technically best is to shoot high shoulder for that CNS shot, to DRT them, when it comes to their stress levels and meat taste? Im speaking in regards for the most perfect possible meat taste for regular hunters? Thanks, and great podcast, with really unique information. p.s. not into head, neck or spine shots, as its easy to miss.

That is probably the best assessment. The reality of hunting is that there is almost always a little imperfection on the point of impact. The quickest - flop/dead - that I have seen with elk/deer is top shoulder (blade section) - massive bullet expansion, liquifying lungs, animal dead before hitting the ground. Open up the diaphragm and nothing is even recognizable. You will typically lose 50-60% of meat off both upper shoulder sections.

It's a scary thing when you turn your passion into a business especially when it comes to eradicating animals. It's funny how the axis deer get the bad rap when pigs goats and cows do way more damage than axis dear axis, deer are picky eaters they don't eat everything down to the dirt like pigs goats and cows do, and leave it bear dirt like pigs, goats and cows do especially the pigs with their Rutting and leaving football field of the land just torn up and rutted out. . Prove me wrong but I think it's about federal grant money more than anything else they don't care about reefs and the island government sucks here if they did care they wouldn't dump 400,000 pounds of toxic ash 1000 feet from the ocean at olowalu.just like everything else it's all about the $. Start planting more natives is if you wanna bring back the natives as well I don't see much of that being done anywhere. Jake seems like a nice guy but I have a feeling he's not the one in control of all this just a tool to get the job done.
