Palmer on the wing is a waste of his talent. As the wingers stay wide to stretch the pitch, it would keep Palmer out of the game and isolate him without any overlapping presence to let him drift centrally. Madueke is a perfect fit for that role and Estevao Willian when he joins the team in the future (assuming the deal is done). If Odegaard and De Bruyne can play as 8s in similar systems, I don't see why Palmer couldn't. Palmer was actually more effective at getting impactful high turnovers last season than Gallagher because he reads the play, gets intercepts and has the ability to turn that into a big chance, which Gallagher can't do as effectively. The inverted fullback also limits his defensive responsibility so it won't be such a defensive trade-off. Getting our best creator in the most dangerous positions is more important than having more midfield legs

I broadly agree with you that Palmer is wasted out wide, and that Madueke is more of the chalk-on-the-boots winger. Palmer's effectiveness is reduced if he is only playing in the wide zones; he loves to get into the half-spaces. I'm struggling to agree with Palmer being more defensively impactful than Gallagher. Conor outperformed Cole by a multiple of 2-4 in almost all defensive stats. (I'll caveat that by acknowledging they had different roles in the team.) Palmer is, as you say, superb at blocking passing lanes, reading the play and grabbing an interception. There are spectacular successes where he immediately gets a shot on goal (hello, Jordan Pickford!) and I'm sure that's the sort of thing you refer to. Gallagher does more of the harrying, picking up second balls and forcing opponents into hasty passes, where they might be picked up by Palmer or, most spectacularly, Caicedooooooo! Palmer and Gallagher complement each other. It's always hard to say who can and can't do what, because we often don't see them attempt it. unless you've seen them try and fail, we don't know for sure. We don't know how well Palmer can play as a pure winger, but I'm sure he'd make a good go of it. We have seen that Mudryk isn't good at beating a man 1v1 unless he can sprint past, which makes him dubious against the low blocks we will attempt to force opponents into. (Mudryk does seem capable of a good pass and some of his better games have come when he's operating more inside, so I'll watch that space with interest.) Nick mentioned Chilwell isn't suited to the inverting FB role, but we've never seen him try; he's not been fit when Poch tried the tactic in pre- or late-season. Maybe he can. Interesting times ahead.

@@iandshaw My point about Palmer being effective in high turnovers was more about what he does after winning the ball. I believe that Gallagher's biggest weakness is his decision making and vision, he takes too long on the ball if his options aren't obvious. I agree that a player with Gallagher's skillset is necessary sometimes but I would much rather Palmer, Caicedo or Enzo be the player to turnover the ball in a press because they are more likely to make a decisive play after it The reason I choose to point that out is that I think that selling Gallagher is not as detrimental as a lot of people think. The player he has shown himself to be this season is most likely it in terms of development. He is going into his 7th pro season, he isn't a young, developing player anymore, he is in his prime. Selling him brings in good money, gives game time to younger players like Lavia, Carney or Santos, removes the risk of a free transfer exit and allows us to play a more ball dominant style of play with better "on-ball" players

@@robertpttt9790 I'll have to look more closely at CG's decision making to see if I agree with you on that. Palmer certainly can give immediate and spectacular results when he turns the ball over. Does that outweigh the times he doesn't manage it compared to CG doing so? I'm not so sure, when you consider the greater number of lower-grade attacking opportunities combined with the reduced number of opponents' attacks. I appreciate the arguments for selling Gallagher, and it seems that you are more in line with the sporting directors on this. I just happen to disagree.

The same could be said about Azpilicueta 10 years back. Or Dani Carvajal in RM. The point is not always about technicality, but whether he is providing what's necessary. And he did. A technical player also comes with a question of whether his already proven skills will translate in this club or not. If being technically good was enough then Torres, Morata, Timo, Lukaku, Aubameyang wouldn't have flopped here at Chelsea. All were technically more sound than Diego Costa, all were faster, 2 of them were better at headers than Costa. All of them did shit. Kai Havertz is extremely skillful, he also failed.

You have to be able to pass quickly and make smart football decisions quickly in this system. How is Gallagher "perfect" for this system? He can win the ball and is able to read the pitch pretty well and has an endless engine l. Outside of that he is awful for this system. I understand the homegrown Chelsea boy aspect, but he's a joke in this system. He will be sold.
@iandshaw
@iandshaw 3 месяца назад
To play possession football, you have to have the ball. Gallagher and Caicedo win the ball. Like Deschamps ,Makélélé, Mikel or Kanté, Gallagher is fine making short passes to the players who can ping the long and medium passes accurately.

Thanks for an excellent summary of Enzo Maresca football. I agree with your tentative starting X!. The key to this formation is what happens to Conner Gallagher. I would hope that Chelsea waits as long as possible to decide Gallagher’s fate. By that I mean see who they successfully sell and the revenue that brings, get a good handle on wo they want to bring in and what will cost, then make a determination that they can afford to extend Gallagher’s contract or they have to sell him to meet FFP concerns. What will be interesting is what Gallagher says about leaving, whether he says I don’t want to play for any club but Chelsea, I’ll go to Aston Villa but not Tottenham, and how Chelsea reacts to that.

Gallagher is not a starter in a possession based, ball playing side. He's a tackling machine that makes an amazing effort whenever he plays. But he's not technical enough. Lavia, Enzo, Nkunku, Caicedo and Palmer are all ahead of him in either of the midfield positions Gallagher would play. I'd love to still have him in the squad, but at full strength he's not a starter.
@eelez9634
@eelez9634 3 месяца назад
I think I would like to see a 433 but instead of the RB inverting, and both of the 8s pushing, you have the RB push up and hold the width instead. This allows Enzo and Caicedo to be involved in build up, while allowing Reece/Gusto to act as a de facto RW in possession, allowing them to use their attaching talents. This means we can keep the 3241 shape in possession and the 433 out of possession.

Why is Chelsea trying so hard to get excited for Maresca when 95% of the fans don’t care anymore about the direction of the club given the disastrous decisions by winstanley and the other guy. The sporting directors have made mistake after mistake. It’s incredible and I hope they get sacked after this impending failure.

Maresca himself will have to do a bit of adapting if he wants to get the best out of individual players, mediocre players in the championship is a lot different than top class players in the premiership, I'm a Chelsea fan since 1970 so I'm praying everything works out for us and not have to read in a few months time that players are not happy with the situation, great show by the way.

So, I guess I’m confused about the notion that Palmer would be an 8. It strikes me, in all of the information that I’ve consumed about Maresca, that the 2 in the 4-2-3-1 are interchangeably 6s &8s depending on how the team build up. When the fullback inverts, effectively one of the 6s (Enzo or Caicedo) moves up the pitch next to a 10 (Palmer) while either Cucurella or James/ Gusto invert. The defense will then form a back three with the left or right center back playing a wider role and the other CB playing a central role. Palmer will maintain a higher pressure role up the pitch but the majority of the effort to cover ground will fall to Enzo/ Caicedo and the wingers. I may have it completely wrong. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Possession based football has never really been a Chelsea thing. I hope this wouldn't be a failed experiment. I also think that playing on the counter can be mixed with keeping possession
@eggsII

Hmmm. It sure seems like they’ve tried to go that direction in the past with hires like Conte and Tuchel. Pretty small sample of the overall Chelsea history, but it seems that they’ve dabbled with possession-based play in their recent history to pretty good success…
