Alan Rickman said in an interview in 2012 that the drop was more like 40ft, but that's not to play him down in any way because people have literally _died_ from falling from a shorter height than that, so kudos to him for doing that stunt because _holy shit_ it was a 40ft freefall. My favorite part of this movie that’s less obvious is that “ode to joy” is played whenever we see the vault, but it’s in a minor key and just on a single cello until the vault opens and we get the glory of that full orchestra, one of those moments that makes you almost root for Gruber and co, very well done

Another cool thing I love about the movie is that John's Beretta is a 9mm, the same caliber as most of the terrorist's weapons (except the Steyr). So it's believable that he can top off his ammo whenever he gets a chance to search bodies -- which you see him do in the film as well!

In addition, this movie pulled off a concept that I've never seen work anywhere near as well anywhere else: the estranged married couple that gets back together in the end. In most other movies and tv shows that attempt this, the couple is either so lovey dovey you can't believe they were ever estranged, or so hostile you can't believe they ever loved each other. Here, I believed that John and Holly had serious problems that led to their estrangement, yet despite these problems, they still loved each other. I haven't watched any other Die Hard film after the second one. In my head canon, they never got divorced because they love each other that much.

When I saw Bruce Willis star in the new TWILIGHT ZONE episode "Shatterday" (based on a magnificent Harlan Ellison story), I knew he would have a great career in Hollywood, as he proved that his wise-cracking MOONLIGHTING character wouldn't be a stumbling block of typecasting. He could ACT -- even in dramatic roles. DIE HARD blew me away for being probably the smartest action film I had ever seen up till that point, with a terrific star-turn for Bruce. Having said that, it would be a gas to see somebody do a Deep Fake and superimpose Frank Sinatra's face over that of Bruce Willis, since the main character in the novel DIE HARD was based on was the same character that Sinatra portrayed in THE DETECTIVE -- in fact, the studio was obligated contractually to offer Sinatra the part and, luckily, he turned it down, and the novel's Father-Daughter dynamic was changed to a Husband-Wife one. Imagine a Sinatra Deep-Fake over Bruce here, maybe substituting "Ring-a-ding-ding, motherfucker!" for "Yippee-ky-yay, motherfucker!" . . . stuff like that.

Whilst he mistakes the source, Hans' interpretation of the "no more worlds left to conquer" line is the more common (and arguably more interesting from a literary perspective). It speaks of the emptiness that comes once the 'best' reach their peak, knowing they have nothing else to do, nothing else to achieve. Looking at it like that, I think it's interesting to wonder how Hans would actually feel if he had succeeded. Would he really have been happy just sitting on a beach earning 20%?

A lot, and I mean a *lot*, of what makes the original Die Hard so good is that it was based on a much darker, grittier novel about a different character entirely in a very similar (yet not quite the same) situation. The book it was based on, "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Roderick Thorp, was actually a sequel to a much longer and more "literary" work called "The Detective," which itself was adapted into a film starring Frank Sinatra quite a long time before Die Hard was made. "Nothing Lasts Forever," by comparison, was short and rather pulpy... but interesting nonetheless, telling the story of the now-grizzled and aged Joe Leland (protagonist of "The Detective") as he, ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time with no shoes on much like John McClane would in the movie, became the one-man obstacle to Tony Gruber's terrorist mission to publicly expose Klaxon Oil's arms deals with a dictatorship in Chile and "redistribute" the contents of their vault to the people, a huge P.R. stunt for a group of radicals. Your mention of John McClane being the "antagonist" here is especially interesting because the book this movie was based on leaves the reader somewhat in uncertainty over who the true "good guy" of the conflict even was. As an amusing detail, the "gun taped to the back" trick works without a hitch for John McClane in the movie but doesn't completely work out for Joe Leland in the book. Joe's daughter (replaced by John's wife in the movie) falls to her death along with Gruber and his hand does indeed catch on her wristwatch while he drags her down. Leland isn't able to reach her in time and she even takes a shot to the abdomen from Gruber before he even drags her to the window at all. It's a little nebulous as to whether Leland's daughter deserved to die or not, as Gruber claimed she knew what the Klaxon Oil company was up to, but she dies before Leland has a chance to confront her on the issue and get her side of the story. Oh, but don't think Leland doesn't have his own special brand of marital problems, because OH BOY, Thorp gets into that can of worms in "The Detective." The upshot is that though John McClane is written as being a cool action hero, much of conflict is based on a more down-to-earth story of a much older man who had a REAL struggle to stay on top of the game, and that translates into a very, very well-rounded action movie where all of the hero's victories feel earned through hard fighting and clever resourcefulness rather than just handed to him because the director thought it would look cool... like in the later Die Hard movies.

Still my favorite action movie of all times, from childhood to now. I love it more now because I get the deeper tones that were hiding in plain sight that I did not see as a kid. As a kid it was about the action and the one liners. As an adult, I see the pain and emotion. I hear so many people loving this just because it was a great action flick, but I love it because it is just an all around great movie on so many levels. As they say, "Yippee ki yay" Such an iconic film! Every aspect of it was amazing, the storyline, the characters, the soundtrack, and the action were all great and literally legendary! Decided to watch it on Christmas day again, and what a film. Hard to find anything similar these days, what a time. Such an amazing cast as well, especially with Willis in his prime. So sad to see him in the condition he is now, and hearing about the passing of Gilyard, few months back. But we can all agree on this movie and their talent will always have an everlasting legacy. If you're looking for a perfect action-packed, film; This is it! Unforgettable.

A little fun fact actually, the director of this movie wanted the whole thing to sound real so he had the guns loaded with loud blanks (I'm pretty sure). And during the scene with Bruce under the table and Alan on top trying to shoot him (Again I think, can't remember too well) the shots from Bruce's gun made him either 3/4s or 2/3s deaf in his left ear. Sucks but at least it was a good movie. Edit: It was NOT Alan, it was one of the goons who made the remark, "Next time you have a chance to kill someone don't hesitate!"

Watched this on Chirstmas Eve. One of the greatest action as well as Christmas movies of all time. An iconic, legendary, standout, and amazing film. A film filled with so many iconic sayings like "Yippee ki yay", references about other films, actors, and much more to even mention as well as say about this film. Like its not one of those Christmas movies about joy or happiness but a Christmas film, that is filled with action which is what makes it so unique. Its a film about emotion, being a hero, fighting, against all odds and etc. Like every single part of it was amazing, the story, the characters, the music, the action throughout the film; where no matter what, you were always on the edge of your seat as if you were the character, constantly experiencing his emotion, what was occurring, his humor, the action, it was like a roller coaster of emotions that is honestly better explained if you felt it as well as watched it since you were constantly cheering him on as well as worrying what was going to happen next, and him coming out as a hero, his legacy, alongside saving the day. Like every year, I always watch a Christmas movie with my twin brother, since he always recommends new Christmas films to watch together on Christmas and when he mentioned this, which is a film we've never watched before only until now, it really goes to show how amazing it was & probably his best pick & by far one if not, the greatest action film of all time as well as Christmas film of all time due to its uniqueness. Like I honestly can't believe how this film came out in 1988, and how advanced it was for its time, especially with how great it must've been in that era. It's honestly hard to find anything unique to this type of film like what a time it must've been in that era to be alive. Such an excellent cast, especially Willis who honestly never fails when it comes to these types of films especially when it was in his prime. Sad to see the condition he is in now, wishing him all the best as well as hearing about Gilyard passing away a couple of months back which honestly makes you look back to the film and see how amazing he was. Same with Willis when he was in his prime. Like the amount of people that still watch this film and mention about it, really goes to show how much of a legacy it has, and how its by far the greatest action movie of all time. Truly unforgettable, especially every scene which was just so iconic, amazing and so much to say about this film. Like its a neverending page of words. Like if you're picking out a perfect action film to watch that will always make you on the edge of your seat filled with emotion and always focused this is your film to watch. 5 stars.
