Doctor Strange! The MCU keeps pumping these movies out and we keep loving them. Well, most of us. And the rest of you are wrong. Juuuuust kidding. Nonetheless, here's everything right with Doctor Strange.

I know this video is a few years old, but they actually did cast a Tibetan man for the role of the Ancient One. But after talks with China (who does not recognize Tibet as a country) they swapped him out for Tilda. That said, I really liked her perfromance.

I got to be honest, one of the tiny little book-end details I love most is Wong laughing at Strange's jokes: First time: S: "People used to laugh at my jokes" W: "Did they work for you?" Later, when Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme: S: *Tells a bad joke* W: *laughs* That's funny. S: *Gives Wong an 'are you fuckin serious?' look.*

Strange forgot that the oath of "First, do no harm" wasn't referring to people in general. It refers to the patient, those who are ill and need treatment. Do no harm to the patient(s). A Doctor is therefore fully able to kick someone's ass to the best of their ability without violating that oath.

I like the jokes as part of the movie. Not because they're super-funny, but because they illustrate Strange's character at that moment. In the beginning of the movie he's unable to have a conversation that doesn't revolve around his career (or musical trivia--which is still just him showing off). After the accident, he can't find joy or amusement in anything. At the end of the movie, he's more settled but also more serious. During that set of scenes, however, he's falling into the student role. He's no longer obsessing over his career or his injury, but he doesn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders yet. He's playful and relaxed and even kind of dorky--it also gives you some insight into how he probably was as a younger man when he first started studying medicine. It also doesn't bother me that they aren't better for more than a slight chuckle because that's one thing that separates him from Tony Stark, who is constantly quipping--particularly since the two characters bear a striking resemblance to begin with. In fact, I find the jokes kind of humanizing. He only occasionally gets a really funny zinger, and that somewhat breaks the cliche that really smart people are also really witty.

My ONLY complaint with the 'I've come to Bargain" Scene, is that they didn't show any loops of Strange just being insufferably chummy with Dormammu. "Hey Dormy!" "How's it going, Dorm-meister!" "So about that bargain?" Strange has this unfathomably powerful eldritch abomination exactly where he wants him, and has been through thousands, if not millions of loops. At some point he'd probably be desensitized to the deaths, and act all casual with Dormammu repeatedly killing him, just to further annoy him into giving up.

I actually don't think it matters how long Strange was trained, because he never becomes a Master Sorcerer. Yes, the Ancient One calls him Master Strange, but that's only because he defended the Sanctum Sanctorum. In all of his fights, he gets his ass handed to him in magic, and the Time Manipulation was really just the Eye of Agammotto (Not sure if I'm spelling that right). Plus, even in their first meeting, the Ancient One says he's gifted.
@Flaris
@Flaris 7 лет назад
Yeah. He improves obviously from knowing nothing, but he has a long way to go. Things worked out because the cloak helped him, he got a bit lucky, and leaned on an Infinity Stone. He has a long way to go before becoming the Sorcerer Supreme. And the movie dates events pretty well. If speculation is right then his accident occurs around the time of Iron Man 2. So he has from that point to Infinity War to develop his skills enough for what is coming.
@DatAsianGuy
@DatAsianGuy 7 лет назад
yep, the movie also never ended with him becoming Sorcerer Supreme and that's what I'm asking myself, who is sorcerer supreme now or to be more specific who decides next to the ancient one who the next sorcerer supreme is?

FlareKnight I think it's been confirmed that the film takes place in 2016. You can see the Avengers tower in the film before the accident. www.cinemablend.com/news/1582629/when-in-the-mcu-does-doctor-strange-take-place Not sure how reliable this source is but why exactly would they lie about this information?
@Sefoskiii
@Sefoskiii 7 лет назад
Takahashi Sora They wouldn't just put in the Avengers tower if it didn't fit in with the timeline. That would be stupid and confusing. Easter egg or not, the film does take place after the first Avengers film. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, people have said that they saw an award in Strange's house that had the date "2016" on it. So there's that.
@Sefoskiii
@Sefoskiii 7 лет назад
Takahashi Sora Yes, probably. He wasn't exactly the Sorcerer Supreme during the events of the film, so a year of training would make sense when you look at how much he got his ass kicked. Plus, I feel like I remember Feige or someone over at Marvel saying that the film takes place over the span of a year.

Benedict is really good with acting and doing his actions as a voice actor. I remember watching a video about how Benedict was the VA for Smaug. He would move around ACTUALLY act out his actions as a dragon during his recording. It was amazing. They even based Smaug's actions and movements after Benedict. Recorded him and used his movements for Smaug.

Yeah, they used motion capture I think? Which is a cool way to turn real physical performances into digital ones. They usually record the dialogue at the same time as the facial motions to express the character properly. The actors have limited props and set, with no costumes, so they have to create the character and setting entirely on their own. Really cool stuff.

I've commented on your video previously and said how much I enjoy it. What I didn't mention is why I love the Doctor Strange movie. The loss of his hands and by extension his entire world that he spends everything he has in attempts to get it back hit very close to home for me. The anger and frustration, just the rage that targets everyone around him are very close to what I went through losing the use of my legs. You make peace with it or you don't, either way, it IS your new reality and you must learn to work within the confines of the new reality. Some minutes, hours, days, or weeks are harder than others with reminders all around you of what you can no longer do. Doctor Strange shows this as well as it can in the time allotted. The "magic" I learned is very simple, helping people who ended up in my situation. To me, the movie is basically a mystical form of doing the same. Your Wins doesn't cover this as you have no reason to, but to me adding my experiences to the story, there are SO many Wins to add to your counter. Thank you again for your channel! I very my appreciate every one of your reviews!

One thing I think you might have missed is that the ending of this movie sets Strange up to be the single most experienced combat sorcerer in existence. That kind of intense practise and motivation is going make someone real good real fast.

Finally someone said it in these comments. Everyone says they don't understand how at the end he's the "Master of The Mystic Arts" Doctor Strange, but this is why. Hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of deaths over many years in that time loop, he retained all that knowledge and all those new magic techniques he learned, making him "The Master of The Mystic Arts" in what seems to be no time. It's the perfect explanation to how he's so good at magic when we see him again in Ragnarok and even more so in Infinity War.

Let me be clear; I do love this movie. As a diehard Doctor Strange fan, I was super excited to see him in this movie. And Bendict Cumberbatch was perfect. But I have some qualms with it. For starters, I felt like the movie needed to be a bit longer. Strange's training I felt was a bit too abridged. Yeah, there was character development, but the movie as a result of that shortened runtime did a lot of telling instead of showing. Also, the magic, while I loved it; I really wanted to see Strange's alliterations. Also, the Vishanti would have been nice. But as for the positives: Benedict Wong was amazing as Wong. I did like Tilda Swinton and Ejitofor's take on the Ancient One and Mordo. Mordo especially as he is being set up as a cool antagonist. And boy the visuals looked good. But what makes me love this movie is the ending. The ending is by far one of the most creative endings I have seen in a superhero film. I'm not shocked as Dan Harmon punched up this screenplay and I could see his influence with this ending. Not only is a creative way to resolve the threat, but also fits perfectly with Doctor Strange in that when dealing with powerful forces, he uses his head as opposed to his might. Overall, I do enjoy this movie and like First Avenger, I see it as a stepping stone to greater things. Score: 85/100.

Just rewatched this movie after Wandavision and I actually got that Kaecilius was a bit of a dark reflection of Strange. When he first meets The Ancient One, Strange explains his nihilistic worldview, saying that we're all just insignificant specks in the universe. Kaecilius says the same thing to Strange while he's in the bondage relic, but they come to different conclusions regarding this idea. Kaecilius decides that the right answer is to prolong the lives of those on Earth indefinitely in the Dark dimension, willingly killing those who get in his way. Strange instead finds these insignificant people to be important enough to suffer death upon death for a thousand years rather than allow them to come to harm. There's more to this movie than I thought when I first watched it for sure.

The timeline does line up tho. Endgame confirms that at least the "Doctor Strange proper" portion of this movie takes place in 2017, "you're about 5 years too early". And I don't think substantially more than a year passes from start to end in this film, right? So, it totally could've started around the same time as the airport fight.
@Tom-oz7wk
@Tom-oz7wk 2 года назад
You've reminded me why the timeline is so messy. I personally believe the experimental armour incident refers to hammers test pilot who had his spine crushed in the footage in iron man 2. I always thought that iron man 2 took place in 2010 but even if you said it was 2012, Dr strange would've been in his accident prior to the events of iron man 2 and therefore the avengers as well. The problem comes from the fact that in 2012, the ancient one says that strange is still practicing medicine but he would've stopped due to his injuries. I guess it's another line we need to ignore like when thor says he's 1500 years old or like how spiderman homecoming supposedly takes place 8 years after the events of the avengers
@ImDemonAlchemist
@ImDemonAlchemist 2 года назад
@@Tom-oz7wk Iron Man 2 takes place in 2011, and we know that Doctor Strange starts in 2016. There's no reason to think that it's earlier, especially given that Avengers tower is visible at the beginning of the movie. And Thor being 1500 years old has been stated a bunch of times, it's weird to think about, but it doesn't conflict with anything. The Spider-Man thing though just makes no sense. Homecoming has to take place in either 2016 or 2017, so it's 4-5 years after Avengers. The "8 years later" thing is just wrong.
@Tom-oz7wk
@Tom-oz7wk 2 года назад
@@ImDemonAlchemist I guess that means Rhodey is the pilot with the crushed spine but I would've put money on it being the hammer incident. Then again being wrong isn't exactly new to me I think the thor one does conflict with bits here and there like Thor 1. Odin finds baby loki in 965 ad which means lokis 1053 by time thor claims to be 1500. Except thor and loki are clearly the same age in thor 1 and thor even says "we were 8 at the time" when telling the revengers his snake story which confirms he and loki are the same age. Thor can't be 1500 because of this. Yeah the spiderman one is just weird. How feige ever let that through is a mystery
@ImDemonAlchemist
@ImDemonAlchemist 2 года назад
@@Tom-oz7wk Oh could be, for some reason I thought the date that Odin found Loki was more like 500 something. So fair enough, could just be that Thor is way rounding up, like children often do. Doctor Strange is an amazing movie, the only MCU movie I like more is Captain America: the Winter Soldier. The visuals were stunning and the cast was great. Benedict was perfect for Doctor Strange and I can't picture anyone else playing him. I also loved the set up for Mordo to become a powerful villain, the only other MCU villains that I have seen get that sort of attention are Loki and Zemo (I don't really see Bucky as a villain because he was brainwashed and was a victim of Hydra when he was the Winter Soldier). This was also probably the only movie where I told people that it was worth it to pay the extra money to see it in 3D too.

I would say Kaecilius was like most MCU villains, not horrific, but nothing amazing either which was why I focused more on the development of Mordo's fall to becoming a villain instead which was what held my interest. Mads Mikkelson's performance was probably the saving grace of Kaecilius, it also helps that I am a huge Mads fan. But when it comes to MCU villains including Netflix, the ones that impressed me were Loki, Zemo, Wilson Fisk, and Killgrave. But it is really cool that we have the same taste in MCU movies.

+Evan Brownlow most of the time the forced jokes didn't really annoy me because the other character in the scene would have the same reaction as me, or one very similar. my favourite is when Wong is just glaring at him. it's almost like an insurance policy if some jokes don't land, if they don't you get a little more immersed in the film anyway.

yeah i dont think most mcu villains are bad (there are a few bad ones tho) most are just underdeveloped (loki, kilgrave and fisk are the best villains, i dont think zemo was that great tho). and like you said, one of the reasons the forced jokes didnt really take me out of the scene was because wong reacted the same way i was. the visuals and the cast made the film (like you said mads being him was the best thing about kaicillius) and it is easily my second favorite mcu film

This is literally the only movie in the MCU to date that I purposely saw in 3D just because I knew some of the scenes were going to be like taking an acid trip. It did not disappoint.

Late to the show. But I definitely wanted to point out how insane Ben's acting is with the recovery of his accident. I was paralyzed on my left side exclusively, years ago and had to go through PT like shown. He portrays the struggle and all if it uncomfortably well. Literally gave me anxiety while watching it. I give that a solid 10 alone.

The sanctum was attacked while he was being told off. He got separated and started his first fight soon after. He never makes it back to where the Eye is kept until the end. Before that, everyone is too preoccupied with the attacks to take it back. Also, the Eye is not easy to open. Even if you steal it, unless you are as gifted as Strange, it would take a long time just to LEARN how to open it.

Please correct me if I am wrong. This is what I remember happened. Strange 'borrows' the Eye. They catch him with it. They are in Nepal. (or wherever their home base is) England sanctum gets destroyed. Explosion knocks Strange into the NY sanctum. He fights. Goes to hospital. Comes back to NY sanctum. Talks to Mordo about taking a life. NY sanctum gets attacked. He shifts them into mirror dimension. Chase. Battle. Ancient one dies. Back to hospital. Argument about Ancient one using dark power. Prepare to defend Hong Kong sanctum. Battle at Hong Kong. Dormamu, I've come to bargain. Mordo leaves. Eye is returned. To me, the moment the England sanctum was destroyed, other things got in the way.

So just to clarify a few things on the continuity side that you could have included in the video, but no probs either way. The Airforce Colonel with the broken spine is 100% the hammer industries test pilot. You said it yourself at the training montage bit in the movie, where you suspect that a lot of time has passed since he actually started training. So the time jump from him having his accident at the same time as Iron Man 2's events. To him battling Dormamu at some point around age of Ultron, is appropriate. Because this also explains where Thor was in the civil war movie. It was said that he was off doing Asgard things. The end credit scene makes sense, only if it is happening before the Civil war events. And with enough time before, for Doctor strange to have gone from lucking his way through his first major battle, to being the magical protector of Earth, that Thor comes to for aide. Dr. Strange is much more confident in his abilities in that end scene with Thor, which suggests some time has passed since his battle with Dormamu. The final piece of the puzzle here, is that they originally wanted Doctor strange to come out a year or two earlier. They put it on hold because Ben Cumberbatch was busy on something else. It was meant to fit into the continuity before Civil war. And in true sensible Marvel fashion, they knew they had a script that they were happy with, and left it alone. Even if its events say slightly out of line with where we currently are up to. They have left it up to the audience to determine that this movie's events actually happen 2 years or so in the past.

I have a strange relationship with the magic/science meld in the mcu movies. But the quote "Magic's just science we don't understand yet" from Arthur C.Clark comes to mind. Many of the things in Doctor Strange CAN be theorised to be plausible using real life physics, but it's the way it's presented that gives me a hard time. Aspects of both quantum and string theory lend their hands to this movie well (Which is ironic if you know anything about these) The idea of dimensions, teleporting and the general magic in this film can all be explained as manipulation of the dimensions we don't interact with and the teleporting as manipulation of the quantum world. But to think that the human mind alone could manipulate those things bothers me...(I love the sling ring, Stranges cape and the boots)
@nigelft
@nigelft 6 лет назад
I am quite surprised no-one has ever bothered to reply to you, as that was a pretty adroit comment ... Us puny humans may live in a 4D world (the three spatial dimensions plus time), but we only have ever grasped how to manipulate the first three ... time is way beyond our reach ... and whilst both quantum mechanics and string theory, points to many more feasible dimensions, although it makes sense in the realm of theoretical mathmatics & physics, it is hard to grasp, imho, how it can be understood outside the realm of the complicated equations, let alone how a human mind can physically manipulate those equations in our 4D world ... I personally think you hit the nail on the head perfectly with that ... Indeed, I agree with Clarke's Third Law, that any sufficently advanced technology is, and will be, indistinguishable from magic. Heck, if you take Carl Sagan's interpretation of the Kardashev Scale, at present we are at 0.7244; hardly a I on the positive scale. That means a civilzation which is a II would be considered magical by our standards, let alone a III, or higher. Even science fiction universes, such as Star Trek, or Star Wars, barely makes it to, or past, a I, even with ftl travel ... So, yes ... the kind of quantium and time manipulation, which makes it so easy, even (abet gifted ...) human can do it, bothers me too ... But then again, if we take implausiblity of even a fraction of the stuff in, say, the Marvel EU, too seriously, then it kinda ruins the purpose of making the films in the first place ... they're (mostly ...) are hella fun to watch, and a heavy dose of suspension of disbelief is required, otherwise what would be the point ... (BTW, it is refreshing to see another geek taking about the realms of quantum/theoretical physics in relation to comic universes ... or any of the science fiction universes, for that matter ... )

What about when Strange is about to return the Time Stone but hesitates and looks at his hands as if contemplating whether to go back to undo the injury but then is pushed by the cloak to snap him out of it. Or how about the fact that Dr Strange literally defeated a villain by making him rage quit.
@reesejackson5935
@reesejackson5935 5 лет назад
My favorite part of this movie is the fact that they didnt give him a montage of perfecting everything......they leave him as a noob and he doesn't magically defeat his opponent so much as outsmart them. He uses the portal doors to take the henchman out of the fight. The cloak saves him. And he beats dormamu with a time loop. Let's be real..... beating dormamu....the transdimensional entity of pure evil.....with magic and skill would be farfetched for him being a noob. Then he keeps training and by infinity war he is a full on badass sorcerer supreme

It's so nice to actually see someone praising a film while still knowing its faults. Film critique has turned into nit-picking fests and it can really make a good movie seem like the worst. Thanks for making these videos, they really put me back into a good mood and make me realize its healthy to slow down and smell the roses.

Another win is that this film takes place around a character with a disability, which is Strange's major nerve damage which leave with him scars, shaking hands and hands that hurt at certain touches. He needed physiotherapy for that sh*t! Whenever we see Strange's hands they're scarred and/or shaking. We're told that Strange could have fixed his hands, that's the whole reason he went to Kamertaj (sorry if I butchered that), to get his hands fixed!

People started hating on it at the exact time when they forgot about the details. If you don't re-watch a movie, you often think stuff like "is it really that great? Is my memory correct?". And since it's one of the most popular movies of all time, hipsters began to rose, and say nonsense like "it was popular because of the 3D, and because it looked pretty. It aged anyway, looks ugly now". Still is a fantastic movie. Is it perfect? Of course not, no movie is, except for Son of the Mask. But it has a TON of qualities, not just the visuals. Even in 2D you can feel the 3D, it's crazy. And to this day, it still has the best effects in the world. Doctor Strange comes out close second now. They were 10 years ahead of their time. Came out 7 years ago and no movie tops it yet. Anyway, it also has good characters (pretty bad villain, gotta admit that one), wonderful cinematography, wonderful soundtrack, good acting, good story (thousands of movies, shows and books use that "white guy falls in love with a native and starts a war with other white guys", doesn't mean that one is bad. Same for Star Wars with the Chosen One archetype), crazy good directing with a lot of new and impressive camera angles, new designs, immersive world, detailed culture, great action, etc. It's not just the visuals, that's just bullshit
