Pete's Dragon is out and after watching Jeremy yell at Chris throughout that video I'm glad I chose How to Train Your Dragon for this week. Not a movie many didn't like, but here's everything right with How to Train Your Dragon anyway. Next week very large things.

Something you didn't touch on is Toothless' understanding of apologies. Its only when Astrid apologized to Hiccup that Toothless calmed down and flew more gently. More important, Toothless didn't reveal Hiccup to be alive at the end until he heard Stoic apologize. Then he unfolded his wings revealing that he had saved him.

dragons are clearly sentient and understand at least some english. the scene where toothless draws hiccup is proof, because not only does toothless recognising the drawing mean that he's self aware and knows what he looks like, he also understood that the drawing was a representation of him (which means he can abstract) and responded by creating his own representation of hiccup using a similar tool. they're sapient. maybe not *as* smart as humans, and they've still got a lot of animal-like behaviours, but they're not *animals*

Another thing I like about the movie is that if you remember, when hiccup was in his first day of dragon training, gobber saved hiccup from meatlug and gobber said ‘ A dragon will always go for the kill’. Then hiccup questioned himself on why toothless didn’t kill him and says ‘ So why didn’t you’?. Now towards the end when the vikings tribe go to the dragon nest, Hiccup said ‘ Why didn’t I kill that dragon when I found it in the woods, Wouldn’t it be better for everyone’? So Astrid said ‘ Yep the rest of us would’ve done it, SO why didn’t you? Man I love that 😀

"There were dragons when I was a boy. There were great grim sky dragons that nested on the cliff tops like gigantic, scary birds. Little brown scuttly dragons that hunted down the mice and rats in well-organised packs. Preposterously huge sea dragons that were twenty times as big as the big blue whale and who killed for the fun of it. You will have to take my word for it, for the dragons are disappearing so fast they may soon become extinct. Nobody knows what is happening. They are crawling back into the sea from whence they came, leaving not a bone, not a fang, in the earth for the men of the future to remember them by. So, in order that these amazing creatures should not be forgotten, I will tell this true story from my childhood. I was not the sort of boy who could train a dragon with a mere lifting of an eyebrow. I was not a natural at the Heroism business. I had to work at it. This is the story of becoming a Hero the Hard Way." - Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell) "There were dragons when I was a boy. Ah, there were great, grim sky dragons that nested on the clifftops like gigantic, scary birds. Little, brown, scuttly dragons that hunted down the mice and rats in well-organized packs. Preposterously huge sea dragons that were twenty times as big as the big blue whale. Some say they crawled back into the sea, leaving not a bone nor a fang for men to remember them by. Others say they were nothing but folktales to begin with. I’m okay with that. Legend says that when the ground quakes, or lava spews from the earth, it’s the dragons, letting us know they’re still here, waiting for us to figure out how to get along. Yes, the world believes the dragons are gone, if they ever existed at all. But we Berkians, we know otherwise. And we’ll guard this secret until the time comes when dragons can return in peace." - Hiccup Haddock (How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World)

Pilot here confirming aerodynamics of Toothless. Can confirm that his wing is actually airfoil-shaped, and his apparent center of mass (assuming all of his volume is equal mass - EDIT: It won't be, because not all tissue has the same density) is actually in front of the center of pressure of the wing, therefore Toothless is - longitudinally - positively stable (that's a good thing in aircraft). Also, I spent WAY too much time confirming this. However, I'm at it now, so the ONLY thing - and I mean ONLY thing - that I can see wrong with Toothless' aerodynamics is that there's no fin for directional stability. I mean, birds don't have this either, but this would mean Toothless is directionally unstable (directional movement being a rotation around the normal or vertical axis). Which is actually CONFIRMED by when Hiccup falls off and Toothless...enters a flat spin. Which, needless to say, is something directionally unstable aircraft do. Holy sh*t Dreamworks, you really pulled out all the stops in this one! EDIT: Can you tell I'm studying to be an aerospace engineer?

There were a lot of little things that made this film great. One thing people tend to overlook: this is one of the few instances where the human and the animal communicate both ways as equals. Hiccup doesn't train Toothless like a dog; Toothless gives Hiccup obvious cues expecting him to react. The movie pretty much telegraphs dragons use food to barter for their safety, but it gets ignored and later retconned to mind control, which is a shame. Also, it's interesting to note Hiccup isn't a useless Viking, either: he's an apprentice blacksmith. It would be easy to have Hiccup be an outright reject nobody wants (meaning: a lot of other stories would have and have started like that), but no, we're told right from the start: his place is in there, not on the battlefield. He has his place in their village, he just doesn't like it.

Evan Stocker yes it has. It might not be stronger than Bewilderbeast, but it can. Remember the homing-signal-like that somehow called Toothless (and other dragons) down to her nest? That's the one. Otherwise the other dragons will just fly away and find a new home somewhere safer.
@emmanueludoidung5745
@emmanueludoidung5745 5 лет назад
@@azroazizah2360 @Evan Stocker @ RaichuWizDom No it does not. It has a homing signal which is created using sonics and a stare but doesn't have mind control. Also Alpha doesn't equal mind control. That is the ability of the bewilder beast. So there was no retcon. The Red Death used it's homing signal to trap and eat dragons. Like the Scauldron and Death Song (Which also uses sonics to lure in it's prey.) The dragons brought it food so that it wouldn't eat them. The Bewilderbeast uses sonics, and it's eyes to control, not lure, control other dragons. It is Tidal class and not a meat eater. It is considered the Alpha because it earned it. To be an Alpha you have to beat an alpha and until recently nothing had beaten a Bewilderbeast. They are also really rare hence fights between them are unlikely.
@azroazizah2360
@azroazizah2360 5 лет назад
@@emmanueludoidung5745 It still considered a mind control. But lesser. Even Death Song's call is a mind control. You can see the dragon's pupil slit when they hear them, altho not as thin as when Bewilderbeast controls them. Yes Bewilderbeast has the greatest mind control and it's a little different, but it doesn't mean other dragons don't. The dragons in Red Death's den didn't necessarily lured there to be eaten. They're enslaved 'against their will'. The Red Death only eat them if they don't bring enough food. She was like a queen bee, she need workers but doesn't mind eating them.
@azroazizah2360
@azroazizah2360 5 лет назад
And I agree with alpha doesn't equal mind control. Alpha is more like a respective hierarchy within animal kingdom. The other dragons obeyed the alpha because they sensed their position. We see that when Toothless shyly lowering his head in the presence of Valka's Bewilderbeast, or when all dragons bowed to him.

Well, with two caveats. 1. The dragons would be much denser, not having hollow bones, or regressed gonads (fun fact, many species will regress their gonads to near-microscopic size when not in breeding season to save weight), so they would need MUCH larger wings relative to their bodies. But the wings *look* right for their size. 2. The Red Death. That thing would be way to big to get off the ground without flapping its wings somewhere in the realm of hundreds to thousands of times faster than it does.

The scene that really gets me from this movie is when Hiccup wakes up and tries to walk with his peg leg. At first he tries to toughen up in front of Toothless, a throwback to when his father told him to walk like a Viking, but then accepts that he needs the help. Toothless is gladly there for his friend and then the shot of their backs and Toothless' tail coming into the shot showing his missing fin really shows how much their friendship has come. When Toothless was hurt, Hiccup was there to make him some fins and help him fly again. When Hiccup needed help walking, Toothless gladly gave him the help he needed. It's just such an amazing film really.

Fun Fact: The animators had to attend “flight school” during production where they studied flight physics and movements of different creatures to create realistic characters. The animators took a two-week intensive course to learn about aerodynamics and used the concepts when animating a creature to create the most realistic flight sequences. Throughout the course, they were tasked with small animation tests where they animated just a wing or tail as opposed to the full body. They also received a certificate after completing the course.

Toothless owed him nothing at this point, but didn't harm him at all in return (aside from his eardrums lol.) It managed to capture the real life danger of flying and the fear, the gut wrenching life or death instinctual twists and turns. The absolute trust each one of them had to have in the other to survive that. 6:45 It has already been winned, but really, how great is it to see Stoic immediately regret his words but being too proud and set in his ways to turn back? Most movies would have him be the parents who won't understand until he sees proof, but instead they humanize him with both instant regret as the moment of fury passes, and his determination to end it and then return to try fix things as he walks away. I think he also realises that, if he goes through with killing all the dragons as he's convinced he has to do, he will be betraying Hiccup, even though he feels betrayed by his son right now.

Another win for 4:18: having the scene between Gobber and Stoick be without a score then kicking in straight after with Powell’s epic score emphasizes the difference between how the other Vikings train with dragons versus Hiccup’s training with Toothless - all the teens have “a way with the beasts” but Hiccup’s is just way more effective and different. It also conveys a bit of a difference in the way Hiccup is perceived - stay with me here - among the other Vikings he’s seen as weak and incompetent but with Toothless, we have the epic score raising Hiccup to a whole different level: here he’s competent and the best at what he’s doing (even though he’s the only one who does what he does). The powerful score mimics the power Hiccup feels when he’s riding with Toothless and helps the audience to feel that same adrenaline rush.

something i love that i hardly ever see anyone talk about is the sound of Toothess' fly by attacks the high pitched whistling and then the explosion of his fireballs is just so satisfying and really gives a sense of his speed and power
@homura7943
@homura7943 4 года назад
8:01 Actually, that only happens if it is a zippleback or a dragon that spits fire. For example hook fang shoots fire while Toothless shoots plasma. Meatlug spews lava or molten rock and Stormfly shoots a magnesium blast. And also some dragons don't spit/spew/shoot plasma/lava/or magnesium anything from their mouth except for a scauldron as it shoots scalding hot water from its mouth. So really shooting the inside could work but only if it is a zippleback or if it spews fire.
@alexisgrunden1556
@alexisgrunden1556 Год назад
I think it's based off a more centralized version of the Zippleback's method: fuel+ignition(x)exhalation=fire breath. Most everything else just has their ignition source internal to their mouths and throats, whereas the Zipp's have it split amongst both heads. Magnesium has a fairly low ignition point, so that's easier to explain for a Nadder, but the Gronkle's ignition must take place chemically, down in the gut; a gland that releases the ignition secretion when triggered? And a Nightmare's fire is more like napalm; again, easy to explain the ignition. Probably connected to their jagged teeth; it would explain how they light their secreted skin-napalm on fire, too. One spark from the teeth clashing together, and the sweat-napalm goes up, combine with exhalation and spit-blast of interior napalm to make the regular fire blast. Scauldrons must heat a bladder full of 'swallowed' water internally (gut or throat) to do their thing, but again, pointing to an ignition system. And now I wonder if there wouldn't be ignition-crippled dragons out there somewhere. Animals bash each other up pretty badly in the wild; add in humans hunting them and setting traps, and it becomes likely. A Zippleback with only one head, a broken-fanged Nightmare that can't light up, ect.

Apparently, Hiccup was supposed to be alone in that room when he found out about losing his leg but someone suggested that they include Toothless in there as well just as a good parallel. That shot of them from behind with Hiccup limping, still getting used to his prosthetic and Toothless helping him walk while his prosthetic-less tail swings around is just beautiful. Also, go watch Race to the Edge, if you haven't yet. It's a 6 season show taking place between this movie and the sequel. A lot of new developments in the second movie will make sense in this show.

Calling attention to the door bouncing back open instead of slamming shut actually made me realize something. A slamming door is usually a visual metaphor for the end of an opportunity to change someone's mind. Their mind is slamming shut just like the door. The door bounces open, and we immediately see Stoic stumble and gasp back tears, meaning his heart is not completely hardened against Hiccup. He can still be convinced. It's beautiful foreshadowing for the conclusion of his arc just ten minutes later.

I highly encourage people to watch the 2 season of the show. Dragons: Riders of Berk and Dragons: Defenders of Berk. You learn and see the bond between not only hiccup and toothless but the other riders and their dragons. The literal first two episodes are to do with how Berk handles having all the dragons with them and adjusting. Along with finally bringing in Alvin the treacherous A’s season 1s villain and a chief of another allied tribe for the second season. You learn about the other dragons and how hiccup may be the best trainer, there are a few *he* can’t train. Dragons: race to the edge is also good, won’t spoil that one, but it’s the show that finally shows you how hiccup and Astrid get together.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that every dragon which got tamed in this movie had been away from dragon island (and therefore the alpha) for several days before it was tamed, which makes sense given what we learn about alphas in the second movie.
@rulerofthewild7747
@rulerofthewild7747 6 лет назад
Actually the red death (the big dragon at the end) is not a alpha it’s a queen and controls the dragons by eating/killing any dragon that disobeys we see this when the dragon that brought one fish and not a bunch gets eaten and the other dragons hide behind rocks. In fear that there be next but they can’t leave because that’s there home and even if they did leave the Vikings would find them or the queen will find and kill them for leaving. Basically the queen/red death is not an alpha and controls with power and fear not mind control
@VenomQuill
@VenomQuill 5 лет назад
@@rulerofthewild7747 What about Toothless going to the island? When they first went, Toothless took complete control, "snapping" at Hiccup when Hiccup tried to move him. It was as if he was magnetically attracted to the place. Or the second time when he was tied up by Stoic. He didn't want to help, but once he got within a certain radius, he perked up and led them straight to the island. Even if the Red Death isn't a traditional alpha in the sense that it's not the same species as the dragons in HTTYD 2, it's still close. Heck, Toothless became alpha and he wasn't even the biggest "foot soldier" dragon out there! The alpha species in HTTYD 2 had a stronger pull (hence the slit pupil eyes and mindless circles) but the Red Death had a pull nonetheless (hence the swarming and instinctual pull to the island).

@@curtiswhyte3297 its really simple. Toy Story 3 and Ratattouille haven't aged a bit: it is really hard to spot a shot that doesn't look that good or seems unpolished. That happens numerous times in HTTYD, specially with the human models. In this regard the sequels improved vastly, to the point of almost 100% realism and "smoothness" of hair and clothes. The environments are fine in the og, and they are more difficult to animate than a kindergarten or a kitchen, I will concede, but the cookers look better than the vikings.

I love this movie so much. It was such a welcome surprise when i saw it in theatres. The second one is even better though. I love how well they deal with character flaws. Right from the start Hiccup uses his strength (intelligence) to overcome his flaw (physical weakness) and that just grows throughout. Then, Toothless' physical disability is what allows him and Hiccup to save both the vikings and the dragons from the queen. And then at the end, Hiccup loses his foot but gains an appendage to help him fly. The movie ends with both heroes losing something in order to become more when put together. It really makes me hate the third movie though... like separating our two heroes like it's nothing really just ruined the whole premise and the theme of the trilogy: our flaws bring us together and together we can do anything.

This movie was one of my favorites of all time. I just connected with Hiccup a ton. My best friend from a few years ago watched it with me, and together we were Hiccup and Astrid for a while. Then she changed and watching HTTYD became sad for a while, but I'm starting to like it again. I almost imagine Toothless as being a representation of the imagination and childishness. Hiccup is open to both and connect with Toothless while all the adults are so grounded in their own "maturity" that they can't even imagine that a dragon might be super cool. Just another instance in which the mind of a kid can do so much more than an experienced adult.
