@@WilliamBeasley Have you notice that a lot of other fans are saying this is a pilot event but it isn't. they don't recognize the key difference between a connection story and a pilot story even though it is so obvious. encase you don't know it, it was the Mane 6 cameo at the start with the original VAs. if it was anyone else it would be a flashback and that would have made it a pilot too. but since they did had their original voice actress it turned in the story from a pilot to a connection movie which sets up for the upcoming pilot next year which will set up the series.
@@WilliamBeasley I think that having Philis cloverleaf being the final one to put the picture frame back together shows that she is starting to regret her actions. it just gives a hint to there could be something more to her past. maybe she's the one responsible for sunny's father's death. perhaps she though it was a way to show sunny she was concerned about here. but she didn't expect the one thing that earth ponies kept. their insane stubbornness. i wouldn't be surprise if the series is discovering how the magic vanished so they can try to avoid the same fate. i hope this up coming series can show what most human refuse to do. learn from history so you don't repeat it.
I don't know if this was INTENDED, but at 15:44 It sounds like Izzy's voice broke a little. This is usually a sign of hurt feelings, which, in this case, makes sooo much sense. You get promised friends and everyone runs away in fear, that's gotta be a blow to the heart.
I didn’t catch that she was very aware that people were running from her in *fear.* She thought it was a game at first, and even after Sunny’s explanation she didnt ever seem that fazed, or that she internalized how they saw her at all. If anything I think the brokenness would come from the contrast in idea that Maritime bay is more fresh, friendly and upbeat than her hometown. So she held onto that hope.
@@pokaay3163 I mean people tried to capture her so I guess she was more focused on getting the heck outta there, must have set in during the journey to Zephyr Heights. If I'm right anyways-
I don’t think that’s exactly the case Izzy said that she never fit in with the other unicorns, given their collective depression and her fun-loving personality So that she suddenly found a letter that told her she had friends, inviting her with opened arms (hooves?), it must’ve been like a spark of hope for her I have a theory that, since Izzy is supposed to be G5’s Pinkie Pie, she had a similar backstory to her Just like Pinkie had a depressive childhood until she saw Rainbow’s Sonicboom that ignited her bright personality, I imagine that Izzy was the same as the other unicorns as a filly Depressed and dull over the loss of their magic until she found Sunny’s letter, that’s when she was filled with hope and she changed for the better
13:56 I love this line, because given the implied vulgarity of words like "peeved", "feather" and "horse-apples", this is basically a news-reader calling the Queen a lying sack of shit live on-air.
@@mollysandera991 i’d a assume peeved means the equivalent to pissed and horse apples the equivalent of shit. Feathers are probably the equivalent to fuck.
I like how Sunny isn’t 100% prejudice free because of the environment she grew up in it wouldn’t be realistic if she was. Also I like that even though Hitch buys into the prejudice he doesn’t treat the others badly and is only cautious which is obvious because (again) the environment they grew up in
Yeah, even as a foal he seemed less keen to automatically condemn the other tribes as evil, and happy to play their game Sunny's way, and when they were grownups the only really outright racist thing he says is "YOU! I know Unicorns like shiny things" when he loses his badge, which comes off as a thinly-veiled accusation that Izzy stole his shiny badge.
@@rollingthunder1043 Also that may be more deductive reasoning, maybe they do like shiny things? As a kid if the glitter was used up I'd probably be the culprit, my items were super pretty!
In addition, when Sunny first meets Izzy she asks her a bunch of questions as if she was some kind of alien, showing how she has been raised to view them as completely different people
I really love how Sprout's ideals are a warped version of Sunny's and her dad's. Just like her he's standing up for what he believes in. I also like to think that Queen Haven and Alphabittle gave the crystals to Sunny so easily in the end, was because she gave them back to them in Bridlewood, so they trust she'll return them again. Also, with Haven saving Alphabittle; it was shown a few times she never wanted conflict, she only imprisoned Sunny and Izzy and mentioned she would question them later, and said she didn't want to fight to Sprout. She may not like the unicorns, but she wasn't going to sit by and watch one die just because of her prejudice. Really adds more layers to a minor character in the film.
W1:09 I really like how even though she can’t fly, Zipp uses her wings when jumping and running, since it helps her balance. This movie is so great with the animation and movement of the characters!
I actually just recently watched the movie and i regret saying all the negative things about it! It was really great and Izzy is my favorite character!
Not gonna lie I actually had tears in my eyes when they showed the picture, glasses and medallion. He was already such a great character and I desperately need more of him
@@jadecoolness101 You make it seem like there were a lot of single dad's in FIM. There weren't. Like I can't even name one. He just be the only one actually.
Another reference I noticed that I absolutely loved is the connection between Sunny and Scootaloo. I think the color palette similarities are what brought my attention to it. Scootaloo was never able to fly but she used her wings to propel herself on her scooter, and Sunny can't fly either (though for a different reason) but uses skates to move around quickly.
I love that when we see Zipp flying in the canyon she’s actually just jumping from wall to wall instead of flying. It’s an amazing touch to notice when you rewatch this.
She doesn't need to be, none of them need to be related at all to any of the Mane 6 and I think that makes it even better. The Mane 6 where great, like what was said in the video, they became our friends, they were there for us when times got tough and they were always a source of smiles, and comfort, and love even though they themselves were not real. The new cast I feel shouldn't be kept in the shadow of the old, they are fantastic in their own way, They can have elements of the old cast, but not have anything to do with the old cast.
Maybe. Or Izzy has had a run in with Discord when she was little (or even in the future, like with Pinky) and it did something to her entire existence. I wouldn't be surprised if he caused the split between all the ponies after Fluttershy's death. He's probably gone somewhere hidden. He might become a villain again, but he'll be redeemed. I would love if he and Izzy became best friends. It would be so adorable if he had a pranking buddy. Their dynamic should be different than Fluttershy's and Discord's, so Izzy doesn't come off as a Fluttershy replacement, but I love the idea of it.
@@Oatmealism I feel like they're setting Sunny up to be a descendant of Twilight, tbh. Argyle has WAY too many artifacts related to Twi for it to just be coincidence.
I’m really hoping Sunny’s lighthouse is repaired, since her element is Hope, it could continue to be an extension of that! And Sprout could potentially have a redemption arc (and getting reprimanded for his actions, of course!), slowly opening up to the other races! I think this movie is a great start for G5 and I’m looking forward to the upcoming special! Hopefully we’ll get more questions answered!
i have a feeling it will be because of a marketing standpoint, they arent gonna make playsets for stuff that the kids don't recognize from the show for later seasons.
I watched this movie a lot and even now the scene with the group at the campfire makes me come close to tears, I just feel the emotion that Izzy feels like she does not want to let go of this thing she had, even if Izzy isn't my favorite pony she does have a special place in my heart
That scene is also amazing how Sunny is explaining that she wants to prove all ponies can be friends, which is really something needed in our world. And then to see the mane 5 decide to all work together to bring that is amazing.
@@comradefriendship the song gonna be my day also explains how she is feeling and that the change is going to start with her, and she will show that they all be friends. True the world we life in is a bit out of wack, but we can still count on our friends we have
@@Darkanimeking23 I know, it's almost like *friendship is magic* I do love though how this movie perfectly shows that you should stand up for what you believe in and always remember that everyone else are also human beings (or ponies)
20:16 That "What...?" from Phyllis is such great and underrated moment. "Wait... you mean we've been afraid of them all of this time for no reason? I've been wrong all along? We really _don't_ need all of this Canterlogic junk?" Puts her in a very different light from the typical lying corporate overlord character. She was overbearing and a bigot, but she was acting out of fear instead of pure spite.
I actually think you should have given the kids in this movie a few points too, because they show exactly how the kits don't fear the other races as much as the grown ups do. This frames very good that kids are still open to the world and to new and other things but while growing they get so influenced by the grown ups so much that they most likely take over their thinking, thus when we want to educate people on racism and show how wrong it is our kids are the best place too start because they didn't got corrupted by the society yet Examples: in the first song sunny makes a little kid a unicorn balloon and it adores it but the grown ups are actually terrified by it Than there's the unicorn kid that got the most personality in this matter, when pegasi and unicorns start fighting the kid is inbetween the unicorns and you can exactly see how uncomfortable it is with the grown ups fighting despite it beeing a other race it's role models are arguing with then when the kristals get brought together the first time it is the most exited and likewise the most disappointed when it doesn't work
Y'know, everyone gets the Seven Nation Army reference, but is no one else seeing the similarities between Angry Mob and Kill the Beast from Beauty and the Beast? I mean, same vibes all around! Especially with "...thousands can't be wrong, especially when they're screaming loudly."
Hilarious enough, if you look up 'The Mob Song' (which is the song from beauty and the beast) You get the results for the Beauty and the beast songs + Plus the song from the new generation. I love it.
I personally take it more as commentary on real world politics as MLP hasn't been shy with it in the past. In the twittersphere fear and hatred of 'them' runs amok, and many of them refuse to listen to reason or fact and insist they are right because 'millions can't be wrong, especially when they are screaming loudly.'
Derpy must have been VERY friendly. The number of background ponies that look like her both in Maretime Bay and Zephyr Heights is absolutely ENORMOUS! At multiple points you can see 8 or 9 of them on screen at once.
14:45 the tree with the pink leave in the background was confirmed to be the Student/Young 6 Tree of Harmony by Imalou which was one of the artist for the movie.
23:16 Needs 100 extra wins for Dev's perfectly cut scream at the very end of the film, as well as that attention to detail to the very end of how messed up his hair/makeup looks compared to the first appearance.
I have seen it beginning to end maybe 5 times now and I've listened to the soundtrack easily 50 times. I play it on repeat during the day, it's the drop off music and we do an evening dance most evenings
It's good to hear somebody mention Sunny also believing the 'stereotypes' around unicorns. Really, they're not wrong. Look at the destructive magic that you see all through G4.
I'm so glad to see someone with such positive things to say about this movie, most reviews I see from other adults were either somewhat neutral or almost completely negative, I was beginning to think I was an odd one out being an adult that enthusiastically loved this movie.
The irony is in an actual quote that's somewhat related. You can be right, but wrong at the top of your voice. Well, that and it's just one of many quotes in a song all about the danger of mob mentality. ...Heh, _danger_ of _mob_ mentality; I made a funny.
Something I've noticed is that the ponies' colors are either brighter or duller depending on their emotions. Even Sunny when she thinks she's failed has much duller, almost greyed out colors like the unicorns in Bridlewood. On the same token, when the unicorns get their magic back their colors brighter.
I just realised (watched this multiple times because it's funny) that the queen of the Pegasus showering keeping the queen clean sounds similar to the g4 op(I am not an expert but I bet they are basically one in the same song
They did use the MLP leitmotif in that, the cadence of 'Keeping the queen clean' matches 'my little pony' as you hear in pretty much 90% of MLP content.
Ok like I understand shipping Hitch and Pipp but I can't be the only one who sees SO much tension between Hitch and Zipp and ships those two instead, right?
honestly ive seen lots of shipping opportunities for hitch at the beginning i was shipping him with sunny and then later on after meeting zipp there was lots of shipping opportunities and then at the campfire when zipp invites hitch to join her and the other mares and that sunny precisely told hitch that she was happy he was there and then right after she said they all were it made me think he was actually gonna be shipped with all of them which means sunny, zipp, izzy and pipp XD i mean do you imagine the luck that would be for him ? XD like damn
At 11:58 didn’t anyone else notice that scootaloo problem isn’t that she can’t fly it’s that her wings aren’t big enough to get her body off the ground so she wouldn’t be able to use the fan anyway because our wings aren’t big enough
I always thought about why we never heard about the wendigos showing up after the friendship between races stopped for a second time was because they were made of pure magic and when magic disappeared completely so did other purely magical species, sure unicorns had horns that allowed them to cast magical spells but magic was only a part of them, not their entire being. it would make sense if a creature that's purely made of magic wouldn't be able to stick around if all magic disappeared but maybe now that it's back species like the wendigos might come back. oh and if I remember correctly during the first race separation there was still magic
I kind of love the theory behind the crystals, the Pegasus Crystal, unicorn Crystal and even Earth Pony Crystal. there was a theory that basically Twilight created the crystals as a way to save magic, cause back when cozyglow took magic artifacts were the last to lose the magic, so someone theorized that twilight took her combined unicorn, Pegasi and earth pony magic and separated it into these crystals and then When she put all of her different magic into the crystals she turned back into a unicorn and turned back into a mortal and lived the rest of her moral life. I honestly love that theory and how that it's cannon cause after I heard that theory I instantly made it my headcannon cause not onky doesn't explain why we never heard about these Crystal in Gen 4 but it explained why twilight no longer existed. Also maybe after twilight died they went into panic or something something all wanted their own crystals to either give themselves more magic or to maybe stop others from stealing their magic but after they separated the magic slowly faded until all three tribes no longer had magic. And yes. I do personally believe that earth ponies have magic, I believe they have a special connection to the ground and soil, and maybe even critters
I have to say that my favourite part in the movie is when Pipp is singing "Glowin' up" because I love how Pipp is just casually floating around on wires while pretending to fly and singing without even noticing that two earth ponies (one pretending to be a pegasus and interrupting her show,) a unicorn, her mum's pet, and her own older sister are running around. Cloudpuff was also barking.
watching this movie. having the dialogue at the start be like “we’ll be friends FOREVER!” and “ill be there by your side no matter what” coming from/about the dad. just immediately “oh hes gonna fuckin die in the next 30 seconds” and i was right
I love how with the scene where they were piecung the photo back togeather, it was the “leaders” of the tribes. Queen Haven placing the first piece. Trusting her daughters. Maybe if her daughters trust them they aren’t all that bad. Alphabittle realising the lengths the 5 have gone through to try and HELP the other tribes. And Phyllis, realising the whole thing her company was built around doesn’t exist, and that there’s nothing to be afraid of. And even if it did exist, they wouldn’t hurt you. They were just as scared as you were and maybe you jumped to quickly to conclusions.
I dunno about the leaders. Sure, Queen Haven IS the oficial leader of pegasi, but Phyllis is just a businesspony (albeit succesfull one), and Alphabittle is a barman with gambling addiction. Not exactly the leaders there.
@@veronikamajerova4564 Exactly why I put “leaders” in quotation marks. Phylis isn’t exactly the leader (that’s Hitch’s job I think, Hitch was the head sheriff or smth) but she does seem to have a large influence over the other tribes. Alphabittle, well he’s like the only major unicorn antagonistic pony lmao.
9:50 Honestly, I’ve always gotten a Greco-Roman sort of vibe from the Pegasi, and if it’s one thing the Greeks, Romans and related peoples were known for it was deifying their heroes and rulers.
Great review! I absolutely loved this movie. I went in thinking it would just be decent at best, but I was really surprised at how well made it was. I greatly appreciate that despite being a sequel to FiM and continuing its themes, it does its own thing and manages to carve out its own identity instead of going the route of being a safe rehash of its predecessor (I was genuinely impressed at how restrained the easter eggs tying it to FiM were after the movies delightful intro). Thats something not even most live action movie sequels/reboots get right (name your own). My only gripe is that Pipp barely gets any characterization or role of note in the story beyond being an unwilling drag-a-long. After her big musical number and bickering with Pipp after things go south, shes just sortof 'there' for the rest of the movie. That said, I really hope the upcoming special and series does more to flesh out her character, because as you said, there 'is' room for growth for her (and Im not just saying that cause shes the shortest of the Mane 5).
Here's a not fun fact! Since throughout the movie we see the ponies picking stuff up throughout the movie with their legs (their literal hooves) there might be a question how do they do it? You can't pick something up with a flat surface! Well here's a very not nice theory! As we never see them carrying anything around like glue or other materials to make their legs sticky enough to pick something up, we arrive at the logical conclusion they must have something sticky/wet with them all of the time! Now what could that be? That's right, it's saliva. Ponies have to lick their feet everytime they want to pick something up. Now here's an even less fun fact! What do ponies do if they can't reach their feet? There might be sitations like that quite often! We can conclude that they ask their friends and loved ones to lick their feet for them. You are absolutely welcome for the least enjoyable time in your life!
Not for all things, we see that the phones were made to be used by ponies (a piece of the metal with a hole to put the hoof into is attached to the phone)
Similar to what Pipp did to make it look like she could fly, when you rewatch the scene where Zipp is first shown, she is clearly just hopping from rock to rock.
also, really small detail: the helmet sunny wears has wings on the back and a stripe that could be interpreted to be a horn on the front. more alicorn foreshadowing?
I say that the magic was lost before the separation of the races, perhaps with the fall of the Twilight Kingdom (? and without Twilight and the elements of harmony the ponies lost hope and mistrust of each other began and without magic the windigos were not attracted to their fights
Am I the only one who thinks that the music in the Zipp floating/flying sequence (you know, where she shows this place where they find out about the gems and all) sounds like a little piece from the HHTTYD music? Because it really does and I love, since that music is always connected to being free, spreading your wings and well, flying!
I also thought this movie wasn’t going to be very good when I saw the trailer, mainly because they got rid of the old characters, but when I watched it, I actually really liked it, and it makes a lot of sense to!!
Kinda really upset that Sunny became an alicorn over one movie when twilight went through 3 seasons lol, and it’s kinda unnecessary? She became an alicorn for what?? I guess equestria rules changed over the past 4000 years lol, even the royal family is only pegasi
she didn't become an alicorn, at least for all we know; as pointed out, those are just constructs of light or magic from the crystals. also flurry heart was born an alicorn soooo...
I wanted to share my thoughts on the film. For one, I absolutely adored MLP g4 when I was younger but of course growing up, it causes you to lose that spark. I am now 18 when a few nights ago, I decided to watch this movie. I didn't have any expectations for it, just to be a nice call back to g4. When I finished the movie, I absolutely loved it and brought the spark i had for MLP g4 go on to my start of adulthood. It felt like being a kid again and going through the lessons that MLP taught me. Of course, adulthood is going to be more complex but to have a show to help me start my life again, it feels like it came full circle. But I didn't not have my questions. I had so many, like what happened to equestria? what happened to ponyville? Where is everyone? What happened to the mane 6, the elements of harmony? the tree of harmony? What about the immortal beings like discord. But as I watched g4, i learned that it doesn't matter, g4 is all wrapped up and now goes on a new generation, like real life. You aren't going to be with your closest friends through all of your life, or being in school, or whatever it is. G4 is now history as all things are and I'm excited for the new lore of g5. It's a fresh page. That being said, on to the characters. I absolutely love Izzy. She just so happens to be voiced by favorite character from waitress, Kimiko Glenn! I just love how chipper she is. But I love all of the characters in the mane 5. I love how strong their impressions gave us. In the beginning of the movie, after the mane 6, I loved the dynamic between Sunny's father and Sunny. It was so sweet. It reminded me and my dad when he would play along with me and I was heartbroken when I saw the medallion, glasses and picture. Great use of show don't tell. Overall, I can't wait for the direction new gen will take us. tl;dr: MLP g4 was the start of my childhood and MLP G5 is the start of my adulthood. and also, stan Izzy
Just me, or does Sprout’s song give me Be Prepared (The Lion King) Vibes- Sprout is like a pony Scar. If he wasn’t stopped, he probably would have become a horrible ruler
I am 99% sure unicorn tech and culture has stagnated due to their over reliance on magic, you don't advance your tech when magic is active which means when it's gone they have been left behind by ponies who compensate for lack of magic by looking into technology.
I don't think the Windigoes came. Because this hatred is more based off of fear than malice. And that fear is of fictionalized versions of the other tribes. So they don't even hate each other, they just hate the fictionalized interpretations of each other. What, no point for little Sunny saying "pegasuses"? I think that deserves a sin. What, no point for Hitch bopping his head? I won't give that a sin. Let's just say that I'll give it a win for you. That way, it offsets the sin I gave prior. I agree, that song doesn't feel right. But I think it feels out of place because it's not a heartsong. Instead of breaking out into song (which I'm pretty sure is an evolutionary trait for ponies at this point), that song was specifically a performance. It's _in_ the story rather than _telling_ the story. I still like the song for what it is though. Shake what your momma gave ya, Hitch! Izzy is Pinkie Pie. 'Nough said. On a different topic, since you did funniest moments of Brony D&D, will you do Funniest Moments of Shadows of the Old World?
And with the return of magic, the Earth ponies can bring about great harvests, the pegasi can fly through the sky with ease, and the unicorns can have all the mayonnaise they want.
General theory: the mane 6 had kids, those kids had kids, this continued for how ever many centuries it's been, and so some lines got crossed My theory of who's descended from who: Sunny: Twilight, possibly? Izzy: Pinkie, Rarity Pipp and Zipp: Rarity and Rainbow, with the 2 being more like one or the other Hitch: Fluttershy, maybe Apple Jack too I also heard some folks saying Sprout kinda looks like Big Macintosh so maybe he's an apple descendant
On the Sunny alicorn thing: seen a few places people complaining she got it too fast and/or that it's unfair to what Twilight had to go through. But (1) as you commented, it may not be permanent... so chill maybe? And (2) even if permanent, Twilight spent less than a year within the timeline of Gen 4 to go from seeing absolutely no point in friendship to becoming alicorn princess of friendship... while Sunny has spent most of her life trying to bring the Tribes together - she earned it. Granted, she's certainly got other lessons to learn and trials to fail/succeed at, but she has the strong foundation. Do wonder what she'd officially be princess of. I doubt they'd reuse already used title like Princess of Friendship. Maybe Unity? I'd laugh if it was Princess of Harmony. Can't explain why, but I know I would. :D
I recently watched the movie and MYM and omg, I'm blown away by how amazing it is. I'd almost go as far as saying that the animation, cinematography and stuff is on par with something like HTTYD 1 and 2.
15:03 When Izzy cuts down a tree and makes her way further, it's a reference from the Russian animated film "ALYOSHA POPOVICH and TUGARIN the SNAKE". (but instead of a horn, Alyosha Popovich did it with his bare hands. I explain because when everyone was busy, one of the main characters moves the tree to pass the road further)
This is kind of a "blink and you'll miss it" win, but during the Angry Mob song before Sprout's face is projected onto the multiple TV screens, you can briefly see an episode of the 80s MLP cartoon playing on them. Specifically the episode "The Ghost of Paradise Estate."
I really like your video on this. It's much better than some of those other channels that count out the mistakes. Thanks for taking the time to count out all the great features of the ponies we love!
I really loved this movie and every Easter egg they put, and YES the music and detail is chefs kiss and I really enjoyed hearing your thought on the new generation!
19:23 This also shows Sunny's lack of motivation at this moment, as she has always straightened that photo, even in a state of panic, but now when she's at her lowest she lets it droop.
hold on the main ponies voice actors 17:44 (Vanessa Hudgens as Sunny, Sofia Carson as Pipp, James Mardson as Hitch) are not returning for the show? WTF?
I don't think it's been confirmed either way, but unfortunately unless the actors themselves lobby to reprise the roles, chances are the characters will be recast with professional VA's/Soundalikes because they can't afford the High Profile actors basic commissions on a syndicated basis. If there is a sequel movie after a few seasons or so, they may return for that, provided recording doesn't conflict with whatever project they are working on. Alas, this is pretty standard in the animation industry. On a unrelated topic, wouldn't it be wild if they got Jason Marsden to take over Hitch for the show?
@@BewareofBordome but they afforded Tara Strong for G4 who could not have been cheap with all the voice acting she has done, hasbro also still hires Peter Cullen and Frank Welker for Optimus and Megatron and they also can not be cheap, so they have the money
@@CHASEMARC And I am not denying their talent, nor influence, but VA's salaries, even ones with as rich filmographies as the the ones you mentioned, are much lower than artists who are predominantly screen actors. Remember, when Chris Rock joked about how easy a Job Voice acting is? Something, about getting 6mil just for sitting down and recording his voice. It was Tara Strong herself, who pointed out that this was only the case because he was Chris Rock, and this was at the hight of her popularity in MLP. It sucks, but VAs are mostly under appreciated.
12:13 idk if this was purposeful, but the wings on the pegasus and the horn on the unicorn are both gold maybe foreshadowing to her transparent gold wings and horn🤷♀️🤷♀️
Yeah, isolation wouldn’t stop the windigoes, it didn’t before. If only somepony had used all her power to create an artifact like the crystal heart that would protect them, something powered by the magic of friendship that could switch to being powered with just plain magic if it had to. That way if the ponies started hating each other, it would still protect them at least at the cost of their magic. An artifact that, once the ponies were reunited, might be able to return their magic to you them once it’s powered by friendship again. Perhaps the artifact could even return a ghost of twilights power to the pony that reunites them. Say, didn’t we just see a similar artifact do exactly that?
