What a coincidence. I just dug out my older brothers Nintendo 64 two weeks ago and started playing Ocarina of time. I’m stuck on the forest temple right now and it’s embarrassing because I’m 24 and my older brother beat this game when he was 10 years old with no help from internet walkthroughs. Impressive, Rest In Peace Phil ❤

The Forest Temple is still my favourite in the game, potentially in the entire franchise. The music, the aesthetic, the atmosphere - it's a perfect blend of intrigue and just has an element of spookiness that hasn't left me since I first played the game when I was 7 years old.

I like that the games that follow the Hero of Time imply that even if he died with regrets, his life was likely a peaceful and happy one. With Twilight Princess Link being both the Hero of Times direct blood descent and a farmer, it’s very likely that he settled down with Malon, and since he wasn’t a renowned hero due to time travel that means she didn’t fall for the Hero of Time but just Link, the fairy boy.
@noxion4143
@noxion4143 Год назад
Although he probably became a soldier, hence his armor, lost eye and overall role of training the hero of twilight. Maybe he retired or was something like a part time soldier (So he was only on duty when it really was necessary) I like the idea that if he couldn't enjoy his childhood in the kokiri forest, he maybe even worked at the farm as a kid, made his new home there, fell in love with Malon and could enjoy a nice life there
@MaskOfLimbo
@MaskOfLimbo Год назад
Is never actually stated if he is blood related to the Hero of Time, since is stated that Hero of Time Link died in his journey looking for his Fairy and became that skeleton warrior as a result. He did that as a kid, so there no chance of him staying with Malon and continuing the bloodline, as far as I know.
@firerath
@firerath Год назад
@@MaskOfLimbo It's explicitly stated in Hyrule Historia that Twilight Princess Link is the decedent of the Hero of Time, who is the Heroes Shade. It's never stated how he died, and there's no mention of it being related to looking for Navi or the lost woods, and even then he's not a skeleton but a spirit, like those found in the rest of Twilight Princess. The whole idea started as a dumb theory by MatPat that has no basis in canon.

@@wattsnottaken1 The 3DS re-releases aren't too bad, but if you prefer the older style and look Emulation may be your go-to. No, the act of Emulation itself is perfectly legal, it's moreso the acquisition of the titles to emulate that it gets into the weird gray area.

Every Zelda game has a very heavy, underlying tone beneath the warm colours and atmosphere that it shows. I love these games so much, not only was the gameplay fun, the puzzles creative, and the characters loveable, but what drew me to them time and time again was the overall message that each game tells. If you just skim the surface, you get the moral of the story. If you dig deep into the story, you find the life lesson that is trying to be conveyed. The harsh nature of reality and how hard accepting the truth can be. Unrelated note as well, I love that you can see the downside of being a hero. Especially one that doesn't get any credit. You save everyone and have finished your duty, and yet nobody is there to receive you, congratulate you, or even spite you, as nobody remembers you. You did the right thing, but everyone you fought for don't even know you, everything you had is now just a memory.

Great video, but I have one nerdy correction -- it is confirmed that the Hero's Shade is the Hero of Time. It is not confirmed that he became a Stalfos or got lost. That's an assumption that I don't think is supported, because Stalfos are just mindless physical monsters, not intelligent ghosts, and in any case the Hero of Twilight is explicitly his descendant, which means Young Link grew up and had a family (given the Hero of Twilight is a farmer, my money is on him hooking up with Malon).

this is true, plus he was wearing hylian knight armor when you find him in twilight princess. He more than likely returned to hyrule and became the official head knight for zelda. I remember my first introduction to this game (I'd play Link's Awakening before this, but didn't associate it to the Zelda series for a few years): my brother and I were allowed to each rent a game from the local video store, I picked Bomberman 64 and he chose Ocarina of Time. I remember thinking that the game looked so stupid and would be terrible and just played Bomberman...at first. After trying Ocarina, I instantly fell in love with it to the point of not touching Bomberman again, and later receiving Ocarina for my 12th birthday. I have so greatly enjoyed playing this game in multiple forms over the years (N64, Gamecube's pre-order bonus for Windwaker with bonus master quest and finally on 3DS). The amount of enjoyment this series has given me over the decades is hard to truly put into words, so I'm not really going to try. It should also be mentioned: Navi's flight through the forest at the beginning looks pretty amazing in 3D on the 3DS, which as a side note, this game is the primary reason I bought the 3DS on it's launch day in the first place. This game may not be my favorite of the series, that goes to the duology of Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons; nor is it my first, that goes to Link's Awakening DX for the Gameboy/Gameboy Color; but it will always be special to me for what it has shown me.

I'm another person who played Ocarina of Time, my first ever Zelda game, as an adult. It was the passion and praise from fans of the Zelda series, and Ocarina of Time specifically, that made me grab a Nintendo 64 online and, along with some of my old childhood favorites, buy Ocarina of time in order to fill the haunting void of time that started in 2020. Seeing a review of what makes the game great from both a nostalgic perspective of an adult who was once a child, and an adult exploring the world for the first time is so beautifully poetic for this game. The children of the 90s and early 2000s get to reflect, while the adults who are diving in for the first time get to explore a vast world previously unknown to them, both like adult and child Link respectively.

If Link HAD gotten lost, Twilight Princess Link would never exist.

You did open Pandora's box, but not only for Zelda games, but older games in general. Personally I would LOVE to see You cover FFVIII, one of not many games to be overshadowed by its predecessor. But any game from our generation's childhoow would be amazing, bringing at least a shimmer of magic we lost and are never getting back... Let me use this occasion to also state how much Your channel means to me as a whole. Too see a confirmation of our love for video games, too see that somebody felt similiar, was moved by the same... Not only it gives us some validity for love we share to videogames, it also makes us feel a part of a bigger group, not alone at all in awe for this amazing art form (YEAH I SAID, BRING IT ON PUPPIES, I'LL TAKE YOU ALL). I belive I am not the only one who grew up surounded by people so sure that videogames (or anime, sci fi books, comics, take your pick) are something not worth time, or something you should grow out of. Why would we though?

That's another great thing about many Nintendo games. Their stories aren't extremely grandiose with multiple minutes long cutscenes. They often rely on masterful subtext eg. in Zelda games like OoT, Skyward Swordand BOTW (the latter does have real cutscenes) where Zelda and Link's struggle quite a lot with destiny and the like. Another example are Kirby games which have texts about bosses and other stuff in the Pause menu, which tell you about their backstories which can be surprisingly tragic

I was born in 2004, so I didn't get to enjoy OoT when it was released on the 64. My family owned a 64, but it was sold before baby me could think, let alone hold a controller. No, my household was a GameCube household, and even then it was strictly Mario Kart: Double Dash (arguably one of the best Mario Kart games) and Mario Party 6. I didn't learn the joys of single player stories until years later on the Xbox 360 and PS3. I didn't play a Zelda game until 2018, with Breath of the Wild. That game was so good that Zelda is now my favorite franchise of all time. It was so good that I bought a 64 from a second hand store as teenager and sat down and played the Ocarina and Majora back to back. That was the late 2010's. I owned a Xbox one, with all it's high end games like Halo and [Insert Xbox Title Here](I don't play a lot of Xbox anymore, since all the good exclusives are on PlayStation). Yet the story, gameplay, music, and characters of old school Zelda made me wish that I had been born in the 90's so I could be apart of the people who got to see this stuff come out. This sparked a flame in me that has lead to me purchasing GameCube Wind Waker, Skyward Sword HD, and I'm actively in the process of finding a good version of Twilight princess to play (I refuse to play the mirrored map on the Wii). I have loved every title in this series, all of them for different reasons, but that fact that playing these games on the 64 still holds up today will forever be an amazing thing to me. Thank yo for coming to my TedTalk.

So I've never played this version of oot, the gamecube one, my version was the remaster/remake for the 3ds. I remember I was somewhere around the age of ten and my family and I were going on a vacation. We got like 30 minutes into said vacation whenever my mom turned to us and said happy early Christmas and gave my brother, sister, and I all 3ds's. My sister had gotten a barbie dress up game, my brother got spider-man edge of time, and I had gotten ocarina of time. At first I was super jealous of my brother for getting a spider-man game because I had thought that he had gotten the better game.... but boy how wrong i was, don't get me wrong I love almost everything spidey but when I started playing oot for those 9 or so hours I quicky fell in love with the game and made me so excited for everything zelda. I did damn near everything in that game and quickly moved onto others in the series. By the time I was a sophomore in high school I had played all the games and done almost if not everything. And I tell you what hearing the opening ost sent a chill up my spine and almost made me start crying. I really hope he gets around to covering majora's mask because I feel like he would really vibe with the games somewhat hidden messaging. With the final boss, you have to intentionally go into the fight extremely unprepared if you actually want a challenge. I went into the fight the exact same way I had done in BotW, and TotK's final boss was *absurdly* easy in comparison, I didn't need to heal even once. People have argued that "Well, this is a game meant for all ages, so it needs to be easier", but I feel like that just takes away from the experience. If the final boss goes down far easier than one of the previous bosses in the same game, there's a genuine issue, imo.

Never considered the layers to the well as a kid like that. Or the layers of truth and darkness overall that the game peels back over time. The monsters of the wells always existing, the cryptids of the forest temple being so close to the safe haven the deku tree made, the royal family being behind the most brutal temple, or finally when the race we are expected to see as evil has a culture of respect and spirituality and wants to see their own king lose too. I grew up with the game so there's so much to the story and the puzzles that I never got to appreciate since I took it for what little it was to me for the time

I beat this game when i was 9 years old, but a few years before that i remember my uncle playing and he was using a players guide for the game with step by step instructions to beat the game. I didnt use the guide but i remembered parts of the spirit temple and the shadow temple.

Grew up w/ two older brothers and the oldest usually owned all the games and game systems so he always insisted to be in the room when playing older games like Dragon Warrior so we saved in the correct way. When playing this game, my other brother and i weren't allowed to progress further than our oldest brother. While i really enjoyed this one, it didn't beat my enjoyment of A Link to the Past on the SNES.

So glad that this channel has gotten to Nintendo games. While I like watching stuff about many games and have enjoyed your reviews on a bunch of things I've never played, Nintendo is the corner of gaming I know better than anywhere else. I get to enjoy videos like this not just because it's cool to see people talk about things they like, but because I like them just as much. Cannot wait to see more.

fun fact: in the manga, volvagia is a baby dragon link buys in hyrule market town as a kid...sadly, the same dragon is corrupted by ganon and link is forced to battleand put down his once pet, trying to get volvagia to remember him. only as link finally slays the dragon does it remember him, crying as it dies and turns to ash. dont mind me while i cry my fucking eyes out :(

For all my peeps who struggle with Dark Link, they're one of the few bosses you DON'T want to Z-target (unless you have the Biggoron Sword equipped, his AI can't handle that)

43:43 I have to correct you on this. The hero shade in twilight princess isn't a Stalfos. You can see that he looks more like a knight of hyrule who lost his eye. So the hero of time was actually a warrior who most likely was killed in combat

if you loved this, you might also love Tomb Raider 1 :) it’s a decent bit clunkier but immensely satisfying to get the hang of, and it respects your intelligence with the puzzles. It’s like a whole game of OoT dungeons! It’s also just as immersive and has a mystical, beautiful atmosphere to it that feels a bit lost in modern gaming. Worth giving a shot :) Great video btw

I was born in '91. I have been playing OoT basically at least once a year since it released. I cannot adequately put into words what this game has meant to me over the years. But I guess if I had to try, I would say.... Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep...Muuwheeep also, I would love to see one of these videos for Majora's Mask...and pretty much every other Zelda game 😆

Since you’re doing more Nintendo games, I highly recommend you play Metroid. I would recommend playing them in this order: Metroid/Metroid: Zero Mission(remake), Metroid II/Metroid: Samus Returns, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Dread Metroid Prime and it’s sequels can be played parallel to the rest and unless you’re feeling incredibly forgiving, you can skip Metroid: Other M.

I was about 7 when I first played Ocarina of Time and after the Deku Tree I was done ...; that time I didn't know there was more to be had. Age 12 picked it back up and played up to Gannons castle I was to timid to continue. Beat the game 31 times since then and it's still one of my favorite Nintendo games

As annoying as the water temple is(the 3DS version fixes this issue) I love how it has one of the most badass Zelda bosses. Not the main boss fight. That one's annoying on both versions. But Dark Link is thematically the best boss in the game aside from Phantom Gannondorf in the Forest Temple and of course Gannondorf himself.

The final boss being just GANON with no subtitle stands in opposition to every other boss in the game and just speaks for itself. No other words are needed for THE big bad. Takes you to the series roots where Ganon was the evil boar man in every game he appeared in before this one (and the animated show. Man, i miss that show lol) Ocarina was the FIRST game to make Ganondorf, a true human, with the beast Ganon being a transitional state that commands a different power than the more magic-oriented Human figure. Fun contrast between the two iterations. Here are a couple things I've seen in other games that feel like direct nods to Ocarina of Time: The black-and-white-clad Iron Knuckles in Ganon's Tower remind me of Throne Watcher and Defender at the end of Dark Souls 2. I wonder if the makers of that fight had that contrast inspired by this or if it was happenstance. Either way I love it! Ganon bursting out of the rubble reminds me of Taniks the Abomination in Destiny 2's Deep Stone Crypt raid, and I wish I could ask the devs who made that fight at Bungie if they had any inspiration drawn from the Ganon fight. Here's to more Zelda videos! If you eventually get to the Gameboy Color Oracle games, I'll squeal. Those two games take a special place in my heart!

My deepest darkest confession in life is that I honestly never hated the Water Temple. Of course my first exposure was in the 3DS version so that may have played a part in it. That being said, I hate the boss fight. Due to the visual themes of the temple, I was convinced it was going to be a sea serpent type monster during my first play through. The disappointment when it was revealed to be just living water was huge to say the least
