The "rubber man" mode in the Godmode fight with 100 smiths still makes sense in the Matrix. Any gamer knows that when too much is happening at once, you have to accept giving up on things like "texture" in order to just keep the game running

The matrix reloaded is truer to the vision and filmmaking style of the wackowski’s. The original is a masterpiece, it’s flawless, sublime, it’s only flaw is that it is a studio film. What I mean is, they had to simplify aspects of the script so that the audience could understand the concept of the matrix. Machines using humans as batteries was incorporated as a rewrite of how the machines enslave humans because Warner brothers didn’t understand the wackowski’s original notion of machines harvesting humans via biofusion. The original film is tight in execution, exposition and exploitation. It’s the perfect synthesis of cerebral storytelling, metaphysical subtext, cutting edge visual effects, groundbreaking special effects, everything works cohesively as a “movie”. Reloaded is far more left-field in nature, hence the discrepancies in storytelling and filmmaking compared to its predecessor. The film suffers from over written exposition, execution varies it feels more pretentious then profound but it’s because this is the matrix at its most authentic. It’s not the sequel we deserved but the one we needed. I appreciate it so much more now then I did upon its release. The film has aged well, when you perceive it with clarity. The writing involving characters such as the architect, the oracle, Morpheus, the Merovingian, is exquisite. The juxtaposition between the matrix and Zion contributes to the authenticity in world building. The stakes concerning the impending invasion of the machines is suspenseful to say the least. I think reloaded is one of the best middle chapters of any trilogy. The middle chapter is supposed to be the most problematic out of the three for a reason. You could say it’s fate but fate it seems is not without a sense of irony.

Super fun fact: Carrie-Ann Moss spent months doing martial arts and flexibility training to be able to pull off that Scorpion Kick legitimately without the use of any wires or CGI, which is pretty well known but during the first movie she broke her ankle doing the jumping crane kick in that first action scene, and decided to work through the pain of it for the rest of shooting, and while training for the second movie she straight up broke her leg and after recovery still learned how to do the scorpion kick. Carrie-Ann Moss is an IRL Bad Ass Good Girl.

Yet another super fun fact about Carrie-Anne Moss: For The Matrix Resurrections, she had to literally learn how to jump from a 40-storey building while on wires and without a stuntwoman (something pretty dangerous to do), and she nailed it, had to re-learn how to drive motorcycle after 18 years as well as having to do all of her action scenes herself. For a 52-to-53 year-old woman who had not done anything related to martial arts since Revolutions, whose body had suffered from giving birth to three kids and whose main interests are yoga, aerobics and pilates (the polar opposite of martial arts), she excelled at her action scenes. It was more painful than before but, not that it wasn't painful 20 years ago. She still did it nonetheless. It's amazing what a determined person can do. PS: Forgot about the fact that she literally had to shave all of her hair for that pod scene in Resurrections.

It’s a fun sequence yes but they should have switched who was fighting who. Morpheus and Trinity should have been fighting the randoms in the chateau and because they’re mortal it would have raised the stakes whenever one of the henchmen pulled one of the weapons off of the wall. Neo should have fought the Ghost Twins because they have powers that are beyond everyone else he’s fought, even Smith. It would have also have raised the stakes and forced him to use his powers as the One in new and creative ways

Same here. The third movie is the problem, really. This movie had the best action sequences, the most interesting info dumps, and then the ending (I'm of those who theorized a Matrix within a Matrix) was deliciously provocative. I like the Jesus/Oedipus imagery and storyline in the third movie, but built-in WiFi didn't do it for me as an explanation. So I am happy with the memories of six months of theorizing and prefer to forget the third movie.

IMO it falls entirely off the rails after they get the key maker. Everything from that point - the architect, the using powers in the real world, etc. - damns the whole franchise. Before that it had some issues but nothing that was franchise wrecking. Also they WAYYYYYY overuse the bullet time. There's more bullet time in the intro of Reloaded than in all of the first Matrix and it cheapens it's impact.

The bullet dodging but not punch dodging is explained by the fact that the guns and bullets are part of the code and work as intended. The bullet leaving the gun can be worked out precisely so can be easily dodged by machines, people however are as pointed out inherently unpredictable by the machines so the fighting cannot be worked out 100% but can be predicted which is why they can block and fight against most people without issue.

Like Morpheus said, all their power is based in a world built on rules. The laws of physics can be calculated down to the finest detail,(for example the kickback of weapons, the speed of the bullets, the angle and rate of fire) but the red-pills they are fighting are not nearly so orderly. Like you said, our innate unpredictability means they cannot be truly certain of our next move, hence why they can be caught off guard. But another part of it is the fact that red-pills are effectively program worms, sequences of code that aren't just anomalous, but completely alien. According to the agents, the red-pills _should not exist._ Humans are batteries, they are compliant, they are controlled, they- ( *click* ) _"Dodge this."_ *System error. Reload.* This paradox of resistance is what keeps throwing these programming bots for a loop (no pun intended): their operating code dictates that humans should not even be able to _talk back_ to them, so humans that are capable of killing their avatars isn't just wrong, its wrong in the sense that _Cthulhu and the Old Ones_ are wrong. The Agents will fight, as they are instructed and bound to do, but they are still fighting what, in their capacity for comprehension at least, amounts to Eldritch Abominations, Things that Should Not Be. (Sorry if that got a little creepy, I tend to get carried away. :)

My Personal explanation for why Neo is able to stop the Sentinels is that the machines themselves are Part of the same mainframe that also hosts the matrix. Therefore, Neo can of course manipulate the Code the machines are running on. Would've been better if they spelled it out like that instead of "Some of your abilities carry over into the Real world", when in reality it's more of the opposite, that the overwhelming presence of the machines on Earth makes Part of their Digital World bleed into the physical one, and how that can be a weakness once someone who is made to fully comprehend the system the machines created figures out that the collective machine empire is just another layer of the Matrix.

I dislike how post-hoc that is. Imagine if the scene had shown that overloading. Every time a new wave of Smiths rushes in, patches of the scene suddenly go pixelated and only slowly recover as more resources are allocated, faces blatantly glitch one at a time from live action face film to the CGI models, things like pigeons and background clutter glitch out and are simply removed to conserve resources. It would've been much cooler to watch, and would've provided an explanation during the scene. However, it would still suffer the problem of not explaining later stuff with even more Smiths.

It was just the quality of the effects at the time. They hold up better than most do. I think his point in that scene is both more subtle and more obvious. He's highlighting the fact that Neo and the crew... aren't actually making any choices. The Oracle told him "go here and do this... or don't". That's not really a choice; "don't" means Zion will be destroyed. He's pointing out how the Oracle is using the knowledge that she is keeping from them to keep them under her control. She offers the illusion of choice. The Architect offers a similar choice: everyone dies, or a bunch of people die and everyone else remains a slave. That's not supposed to be a choice, and the whole purpose of the system of the Matrix is to funnel humanity's options to that: agree to continue to be slaves, or we annihilate every last one of you. Neo is only really able to make choices when he has power, when he can offer the Machines something they can't get otherwise. And the Oracle knew that, which is why she created Smith to begin with: to be the threat that the Machines that they would *need* Neo to defeat. To unbalance the equation.

I never understood why the sequels were hated. You couldn't repeat the success of the 1st movie. THAT would have sucked. They had to go deeper, explore the mythology they created, and not be afraid to tear it apart. Btw, you should also do the Animatrix as well.
@GeneralBolas
@GeneralBolas 2 года назад
I'd say the fundamental problem is this: the Mythology of the Matrix was never deep enough to be explored. The Matrix-the-film created exactly enough backstory and lore to justify itself and the story it was trying to tell. But it wasn't good worldbuilding. It was like a movie set; it looked great from a particular angle, but if you see more of it, it looks quite fake. Good worldbuilding needs to start off with a proper foundation. And The Matrix-the-film wasn't really that. The trick The Matrix pulled off was to straddle a very fine line. It was a film about a group of people in a world, but the elements of that world were designed to fit into allegorical ideas that the audiences could relate to. Here's what I mean: In the world of The Matrix, seeing past illusions and systems of control literally allows one to leap high and if you're good enough, to even fly. But this also is analogous to the idea of seeing past illusions and systems of control in the real world that gives you power in our world. It's a perfect mix. Indeed, the most frequently maligned part of The Matrix-the-film, the whole "people are batteries" thing, is a place where the analogy breaks down. On the allegorical level, this is a great idea. People build systems of control for this exact reason: to extract energy from the underclass and build their own civilization off of it. But within the universe of The Matrix... that's just not how thermodynamics works. It doesn't make sense that the Machines would do this. My point is that the sequels, in focusing on trying to build on a world that simply is not designed to be built on, manage to both have relatively weak worldbuilding *and* lose the balance that The Matrix-the-film managed to strike.

Yeah I can definitely understand criticisms of how the narrative is presented. It seems intentionally esoteric, and especially difficult for first time watchers to understand. I remember seeing this in theaters on opening night. The entire audience was cheering during the action sequences, especially when Morpheus got redemption standing up to an agent. No, it's not a perfect film, nor could it possibly live up to the expectations we all set after the first one. But that's mostly on us, the viewers, rather than the filmmakers. Our own hype can easily get in the way of simply enjoying an experience. It's pretty hard to see something for what it actually is when all you do is compare it to what it's not.

I know I'm being a little nitpicky with this, but the section you're referring to is The Second Renaissance (Parts 1 & 2). However, I agree that it's up there with Final Flight of The Osiris as the best part of the Animatrix. The history and lore expansion builds on what the first movie gave us, and yeah, seeing the brutality of the machines final reckoning of our species was haunting. Imo, for the most part, it's good to great, but parts like Kids Story and Matriculated (which I think is the one with the surface team in the real world reprogramming one of the machines?) I found boring. World Record was fun, but throwaway, as was the one with the detective (the name of which I'm blanking on ATM). The rest were decent. Regardless of my opinion, on the whole, it does add some depth to world, so I would also agree that it should be a required part of a trilogy (soon to be quadrilogy) run.

I wasn't thinking so much about the CADENCE, but the TEMPO of it. @AFL Rookie yeah, Chad Stahelski. He was mainly used for any major wire work that was required; two examples from The Burly Brawl alone that spring to mind are the big forward flip Neo does into the courtyard and the wall slam before he rips the pole out of the ground towards the climax. I think Chad also did stand in for Keanu in some shots purely due to being faster than him, but don't quote me on that. For the most part, tho, Keanu dedicated himself to doing the majority of the work, which impressed Chad enough that, when he moved to directing and started preproduction for John Wick, he was pretty adamant that Keanu was the only fit for the role. If you can get a copy, hunt down either the initial 2 disc DVD releases of Reloaded and Revolutions (which might be a little difficult to find these days) or the Blu-ray trilogy boxset. Either one will have the behind the scenes docs, but I think the Blu-ray editions have different ones to the DVD releases (I'm not sure if they carried all the DVD BTS features over to Blu-ray).

Regarding the vague explanation of Neo's powers in the real world: this is actually foreshadowed by Neo's conversation with Hamann. Hamann muses that the water recycling systems of Zion are essential to their survival, but he has no idea how they actually work. He just accepts that they do. He immediately likens this situation to his inability to understand Neo's abilities. It's sort of a meta shorthand. We aren't going to get an explanation for everything, that isn't what this story is about. It took me ages to make this connection. I'm still scratching my head about how it works, but I've come to accept that I don't really need to, either.

I never understood the hate Reloaded and Revolutions got, sure are they not as mind blowing as the first movie? This trilogy is a masterful blend of specific action heroes with generic themes. So many action movies isolate their hero so that only a few can truly imagine themselves in his/her role. This movie makes the themes so all-encompassing that anybody can see it as a part of their worldview. If you're religious, Neo makes a stellar religious stand-in. If you're choosing to come out of the closet (sorry if that terminology is dated), this is a fantastic representation of the struggles one might feel in making those tough choices. If you love superheroes (or super villains, for that matter), this movie has what you need. If you consider yourself intellectually-minded, the expository dialogue will tickle the corners of your mind. I love action and I love exposition dumps. I graduated with a degree in Psychology, partially because of how this movie made me want to dig deeper into the human mind. I know that it is not the best in terms of overall quality and I have extremely high hopes for Resurrections. However, the trilogy will always have place in my collection of films that I will re-watch constantly.

I always figured the Agent's bullet dodging was an automatic response. Like when your hind brain jerks your hand away from a hot stove before your frontal lobe is even aware of the pain. They might not even be able to stop their dodging, that would be an interesting thing to see.

Or, better yet: the bullets fly completely depending on Matrix laws, so Agents are able to bypass them. But the red-pilled people? They move independently and are breaking the Matrix's laws, especially Neo. The Agents have to depend on their enhanced physique and reflexes to keep up instead.

Just a side note about 12:36 : In France the movie was classified as not advised for children under 12 because of the violence, not the language. We really don't care about swearing, at most the movie can be considered "not advised for children under 10" if there is a looot of cursing. The worst ratings we can get is forbidden under 16 or 18, but that's extremely rare, even the most violent hollywood blockbusters like Logan or Deadpool were -12 when they came out in theaters.

I actually thought hte stilted acting made sense: FOr the humans they've been caught in a cycle so are essentially going on a script path that has bene lain out and seemingly perfected down to a process that only allows minor variations... And Neo is just wrecking balling that shit. For the machines: Uncanny valley not quite in step with what is 'right' TOTALLY makes sense. THey ain't human. that isn't air they are breathing. to them smell is just a set of quantifier tags drifting about in a simulation. So 'It's the smell... if there is such a thing' Y'know?

I also like to think some number of people in the Matrixverse 'act' the way they do at least partially because of Neo's status. I haven't looked into it much, but I'm guessing that humans can't live in/rebuild the real world after achieving peace. The machines were not destroyed. I am thinking the Matrix is reintroduced to help people cope/save the humans, with Neo and the gang taking the place of agents under the premise of doing it right. It'll be a "Are we actually the bad guys?" kinda movie.
@DanteCorwyn
@DanteCorwyn 2 года назад
That was the angle I was hoping they'd go into. Morpheus himself says that humanity won't be free till the matrix is destroyed. So, what's going to happen to all those people still plugged in? And he even himself says that humans "scorched the sky". The machines are literally giving them the tools to survive and thrive, and only go after them when they become enough of a threat to the machines again.

Other wins: 4:13 I love the way the Matrices' mech movements lag behind the operator. The operator is always about one second ahead of what the mech is doing - for obvious mechanical reasons which are ignored in nearly all other mech fights. Realism win! 4:58 Notice Morpheus says he doesn't believe in hope. He ONLY speaks in beliefs and certainties... until the highway chase, when he *hopes* that he was wrong about it being suicide. It's the one time he openly expresses uncertainty, which adds to the tension. Win! 8:50 Not being smug, but a lot of people *did* work that one out. The Oracle being genuinely oracular could only make sense if she were a program/machine. I like that the Wachowskis recognized this, and didn't make a big deal of the reveal. Self-restraint win! 11:15 It's *superficially* a yup moment, but it's actually Neo's first big mistake. He SHOULD have realized he was outmatched and flown off. But he can't let himself lose to Smith, and escalates. This leads to him almost truly losing. The music really helps convey this by getting increasingly frantic going forward, even when Neo seems to be winning . It's a great fight-based storytelling win. 19:18 ALSO, you wanna talk "verbal kung-fu"? That's this scene. It's not just a data-dump. The Architect is DELIBERATELY being as smug and confusing as possible as a way of disempowering Neo. And it almost works. To a certain extent, he's doing to Neo with words what Neo does with jumpkicks. He has the *meta* high ground. (If you can't tell, I'm one of the few people who genuinely liked Reloaded from day 1. :-D)

My very first reaction when I saw you'd done The Matrix was excitement at the fact that that meant this was coming next. As someone else said, this is my favorite of the trilogy (I'm not alone! Who knew?!?) for multiple reasons, most of which you covered. My two complaints were that first, I terribly missed Tank (who I loved) and was so upset that they'd killed him offscreen (though I do also love Link), and second... I'm with you on the "yuck" of the dance scene. But there was so much that outweighed my personal complaints. Seraph became one of my favorite characters in the series, we still had the first Oracle, and I was very, very proud of myself for answering The Architect's "why you're here" bit with "You didn't answer the question" a *microsecond* before Neo did. Can't wait to hear your conclusions - especially since we'll get more insight on this movie included! (Edited for typo)

I always liked Reloaded (and Revolutions, they are best watched together), it is undeniably weaker compared to the first film, but that doesn't mean it is at all bad. The Matrix was beyond expectations, an 11 out of 10, if you will. So Reloaded only being 7 or 8 feels like a let down, but nothing could ever truly compare to the first film. But it is a fantastic film. The whole trilogy, when watched in one sitting, or over a weekend, is just sublime. Everything fits together, Reloaded/Revolutions don't feel like an ad hoc addition, but rather the scripted outcome of what The Matrix set up. My worry is that The Matrix, and the trilogy, will be a one of a kind kinda deal, and the upcoming fourth film just won't stack up. But, admittedly, having since watched more Wachowski films and projects since Revolutions, I feel confident in expecting it to be at least good, if not great.

Another thing about the 100 Smiths vs. Neo fight and all the Smiths in the background who aren't attacking him; they all look like they're just moving around and trying to find a way in instead of standing around and waiting their turn, which is what usually happens. But having then constantly looking for a way in works because there are so many Smiths surrounding Neo that of course most of them are going to be blocked by several others. It was a great way to get around the big problem of having people in the background just standing around in multi vs. one fights

Biggest thing I want to point out between the sequels: The original movie felt like a dark, noir slow burn. So many great noir shots, homages, etc. The whole look of the movie was great that way, making great use of the Dark City sets and aesthetic. The second movie and third movie are shot like traditional superhero fair, are much brighter and more colorful and lack any sort of that noir feeling that the first movie had. It's REALLY noticeable if you go back and watch the first movie cold again and it always makes the sequels feel cheap & cheesy from the first 5 minutes.

If Morpheus can take them, Neo would have had absolutely no problem with them. That's the problem with God characters, it's hard to REALLY challenge them. Or are you looking at it intellect-wise? Admitted, Neo would at first try to brute-force his way but once he saw it was having no effect he would have gotten, as you said, creative, and maybe just altered their code to depower them. In the meantime, wolfie boys and vampires would have had a real bad time trying to catch up to the Keymaker and while regular lead might inconvenience them they probably wouldn't have gotten through the garage door in the first place, seeing as you can just kick them back through the door (again, if they even catch up to them) and slam it on them, leaving them in the chateau. IF They managed that, being sliced apart is a lot more than an unconvenience, as is being smeared across the asphalt in a massive car crash.
@SentiNel090
@SentiNel090 2 года назад
Also, The Twins made a much better hunter, being able to phase through stuff, which made sense narrative-wise. Meanwhile, being hard to kill, the vampires and wolverines made for a perfect distraction for Neo to slow him down because although the Merovingian was playing cocky, he definitely knew his men wouldn't be able to stop Neo, whereas the Twins would have had a chance to capture and/or kill the Keymaker.

In the matrix Morpheus says how the war started has been forgotten over time, but they do know humans blocked out the sun so the machines can’t use solar power. John Conner gets put into the matrix (forcefully or him sacrificing himself) and because he is a man out of time due to his dad being from the future, his genetic material being passed down eventually leads to neo (and possibly the “other ones”) Ths prophecy could actually be a plan by people from John Conner’s time. While decoding the Matrix so the humans could utilize it they realize that John’s brain works differently and he could bend the laws of physics. Then they theorize that if his dna getting passed down through the system would eventually allow for people to fight from the inside. So he sacrifices his freedom and allows himself to be captured and put into the matrix. But since there are so many humans, the trait is so rare, and so few people are looking, it takes forever to find someone with the gift. So long that it’s forgotten and the whole concept becomes a legend. Kind of like how the second coming of Jesus is now. most have heard about it, a lot of people have a working understanding of it, but most think it’s just a story, & the out of the ones that do believe it only a small percentage believe it will be in their lifetime.*

UGH I LOVE THE FACT THAT THE CAPTIONS FADED FROM BLUE TO YELLOW TO GREEN. Showing the understanding from (it’s the real world - to unsure - to oh shit this is a matrix) or I’m just overthinking

When Matrix 3 was coming out our local theatre showed a double feature of The Matrix & Matrix 2. So I saw them (for the 1st time) like 1 big Zack Snyder Justice League 4 hour movie.
