Everything I LOVE About Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Fun fact: When Stone was looking at the Robotnik outfit designs, I didn't even realize the SEGA design. Why, you ask? Because I was too busy getting weirded out by the female french maid design.

I don’t know why but knuckles playing baseball and jumping around saying “I have conquered the second of the bases” I couldn’t stop laughing at, knuckles is my favorite character in this movie.

Why the hell is Sonic 2 soooooo good? Seriously, this is one of the greatest comeback stories in the past decade of cinema. They managed to save this series after the disaster that was the original design. When they fixed it, I was exstatic! The original is a good movie, but it doesn't feel like a Sonic movie. That problem has been wiped off the earth, with this movie truly feeling like a Sonic The Hedgehog film. I am honestly so impressed and can't wait to see what the future holds for the hedgehog and his fluffy friends!

Knuckles didn’t know what fun is because his tribe was always preparing for war, and then got wiped out while knuckles was still very young. The way I see the ending is that knuckles has found the emerald, completed his destiny, and has a new family who would actually care for him, so now he can finally just be a kid and have fun.

Hot take: I absolutely love the dance scene. It’s so over the top that it’s hilarious lmao. I think it actually serves as the moment Sonic and Tails “click” as friends (which causes Tails to open up to Sonic right after).

When Agent Stone was looking through the different outfits, one of the outfit for Robotnik was the Black Mamba from Megamind. That was a super dope reference.

Who else just kept smiling every time they saw knuckles on screen? Shoutouts to Idris. He stole the show for me. Jim Carrey was still amazing, and it was nice to hear Miss Colleen as Tails again😊

I facepalmed at the flossing scene too, but then after we left the cinema, my friend who I had watched the movie with gave me an actual super legit reason as to why Eggman flossed and why he thought it was the norm. Like Charii and Nathan say in this video, he probably found out from Sonic doing it in the first movie, but also, as of this film, Robotnik has been stuck on the mushroom planet for around a year. He comes back to the planet, and because he's been gone for so long, he's still under the assumption that Fortnite dances and the floss is normal and still the hip thing to do, even though it's really not anymore. I couldn't deny that I was impressed he'd noticed that.

I like the super sonic confrontation because it has parallels to the unleashed opening. Eggman backs down and apologises in both situations when cornered by Super Sonic, he then takes the opportunity to attack/trap Super Sonic in both situations, the difference being Game Sonic was cocky and off guard while Movie Sonic anticipated the suprise punches. Followed up by the 06 foot tap

Knuckles pressing the Master Emerald fragments together is somewhat covered by SA1 and his story. He puts the Emerald back together at the end of his story. Doesn't explain how it has power if the Chaos Emeralds aren't inside it, but Knuckles being able to reform it isn't completely outta the blue.

Thing that I realized is, they are doing a “kid growing up” story with Sonic. Like the first one was about “how does a kid gets a friend?” and the whole story is a road trip of Tom and Sonic bonding and actually becoming friends. This movie was about “your people”, Tom mention this after the volleyball scene that Sonic needs to have friends to grow up with and in the end Sonic has 2 friends/brothers that he can relate to. Now that Sonic has parental figures, and now “brothers” what are they gonna do next? Sonic 3 is gonna have shadow, are they gonna do the rivals story, or they gonna do the cliche “what happens when the kid falls in love?” and bring in Amy? Excited for what they are gonna do

On the topic of potential 06 references, without spoiling anything major, there IS a point where Sonic does the "toe-tap" on something causing it to fall over. They even use a very similar shot to 06's opening with the close up on his shoe.

Technically, Knuckles putting the Master Emerald back together is part of the games, Adventure 1 and 2 actually.

One thing I love about the movie was the scene with Super Sonic. In the original it was his friends that put the positive energy into the emeralds after Chaos used up all the negative energy, by it makes 0 sense to have that here in the second one. Sonic literally says to Tails when they first meet”I just met you why would I trust you?” And so because Sonic is closer to Tom and Maddie it makes sense they would be the reason they filled the emeralds back with positive energy. It definitely makes me respect the humans way more because of it and it would’ve absolutely been a cop-out or disservice to them.

I feel many people forget that sonic WAS a tribute to 90's culture so that music could just be a reference to that tribute which is very clever.

If I can be honest i was not expecting Super Sonic to appear in the second movie I thought he would appear until Sonic The Hedgehog 3 but other than that it’s a great movie and I am excited to see Shadow to appear in Sonic The Hedgehog 3

I gotta say, when first going into see this movie, I wasn’t fully sure about Idris Elba as Knuckles. Don’t get me wrong, the trailer seemed cool, and I LOVE Elba as an actor, but I wasn’t sure how he’d do as an actor. Yeah Dan Green and Travis Willingham are iconic, especially Willingham, but hearing Idris NAIL both the noble warrior parts, the “Dot dot dot. Dot dot dot” parts when reading Sonic’s texts, his change in demeanor and perspective when he sees Sonic go after Tails and also save him, even the whole “I am having the fun! or “I have been informed there are sprinkles!” bits at the end, it’s honestly the best of Knuckles we’ve seen in a long time. He’s not just the dumbass. He’s got great parts to his character, and Idris Elba, while a different take sure, did so many parts of it so well

I really love how you kind of redrew scenes in order to show them in some way without risking copyright. It's creative and shows off your talents.

The reason they were doing bad at first with the dancing was because they tried to copy the bald guy and how he danced, but once they started dancing the way they were more comfortable with they did well

The fact they teased Shadow in the after-credits means they’re going all out on the third one!

From what I’ve seen the opinions people have on the movie is pretty different Either it’s disappointing Or it’s fine Or it’s downright amazing Personally I think it’s amazing, it feels like now people are so critical of movies that people take great movies for granted But either way this is shaping up to be an amazing trilogy

I think the Master Emerald now doesn’t have all that unlimited power it had before since it doesn’t have the chaos emeralds, BUT it may still have a connection with them and serve as a way to neutralize their powers or even if put on a machine detect where they are, so it’s important for Sonic and pals to protect it because it can be used to find the other chaos emeralds

You know something I really dang like with this movie ? The way you not only see the character relationships between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles evolve, but also actually the way those relationships came to be. In games proper, we never really see Sonic and Tails befriend each other. Sure, we see their first encounter in Adventure 1's flashback, but we don't see their first interactions. And another big thing, the conflict between Sonic and Knuckles is so much better imo, because it's way more personal now. Knuckles wants to avenge his tribe, Sonic wants to enact the mission Longclaw entrusted him with. And their friendship is more meaningful later on, because they both bond over the loss they've suffered because of their parents' conflict. Heck, Knuckles and Tails also have cute interactions near the end, and I don't think it happens nearly enough in Sonic canon proper. At first Knux still is somewhat hostile towards Tails, but afterwards he seems to naturally evolve into an older brother archetype for him, and you know what ? Hell yeah, I love this dynamic for Team Sonic in this universe. Speaking of, good god when they team up against the Death Egg Robo, it made me so excited. It really gave Sonic Heroes vibes and the little back and forth about groins with Knuckles saying it super seriously and Sonic begging him to stop saying that word really was funny and a good showcase of their dynamic. And my last fanboyism, god that Knuckles. I love that he's back to his "overly serious and devoted, a bit oblivious to the ways of the world and people's intentions" and not just plain stupid. I've missed good characterisation on Knuckles, and to get it from a big shot movie of all places ? Hell yeah, we won this year Sonic fans.

(Spoilers) - Gerald’s gotta be there It’s in the “Robotnik” file, and he screamed when he first saw Sonic which implies that he’s never seen anything like him before, so it would have to be another Robotnik to have contributed to Project Shadow

Where did you guys get the idea that Tails isn’t from the same planet as Sonic and Knuckles? He knew who Knuckles was and theoretically the echidna as a whole, why wouldn’t he be from the same place? Great video either way

When I saw the scene in the middle of the credits, I was laughing like a maniac for the whole hall, because I couldn't believe that they really introduced Shadow. I love this movie

I think the writers put the Chaos Emeralds in the Master Emerald because if the emeralds were collected individually then the movie would've been compared to Infinity War.

I have never felt such blissful childish joy when watching a movie. This movie was made with just as much heart and joy as the first movie it's insane. The part when I loudly fanboyed was when Dr. Eggman causes an avalanche and Sonic snowboards down the cliff with Tails in tow, such a cool reference with Sonic Adventure's Ice Cap. And my jaw dropped to the floor from the sheer epicness of Team Sonic fighting Robotnik's giant robot robot at the end And that post credit scene! . . . . . . . . . . I couldn't contain it anymore and shouted "HOLY SH*T IT'S SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG!"

Personally I don't think Metal Sonic should be in the 3rd movie, specifically because we know Shadow will be. I just feel that if the two characters had to share the role of antagonists in one movie it would probably end up with one or both of them feeling underutilized and not done proper justice for such iconic characters to fans. Maybe save Metal Sonic for another movie or a spin-off TV show or something, that way both him and Shadow could be given their own times to shine.

I feel like Gerald Robotnik (and possibly Maria) will still play a role in Shadow's back story, mainly because the G.U.N agent in the mid-credits scene stated that they found the files for Project Shadow while erasing data connected to Robotnik, which implies that the Robotnik family name was connected to Project Shadow.

The whole knuckles reforming the master emerald thing, I have a theory. The master emerald has so much chaos energy from the chaos emeralds that if it were to break, it could be reformed into its own entity

Honestly this movie is one of my favorite movies I've seen all year. It's so freaking good and amazing. I really hope the 3rd movie is just as good as the second. It felt way more of a game than the first one did and the wedding scene was freaking hilarious and I thought the baseball scene was funny and cute. When shadow appeared everyone in the theater when I went was talking loud and got excited for shadow and if they do show shadows backstory with Maria I hope they make it PG 13 because of what happens

Ooh, those little in-between slides are nice! Sonic 2 was a jam (haha) and I loved every minute of it. My main criticism is with some of the animation being a little rougher, like the special effects shifting around weirdly at times. But they had 3 characters to animate and only a year and some change to do it in, and they did a great job for the most part, so props to the team!

I saw the movie with a couple friends who know little to nothing about Sonic, and they absolutely LOVED it!

I loved the movie and I'm really excited for Shadow in 3, now I wanna know if Rouge is gonna be in the next one.

I think it would be interesting if, in the third movie, they retcon Amy to be like a beta version of Shadow. In other words, Gerald created Amy, but she didn't fit the cryteria to be called the Ultimate Life Form, and only after did he succeed in creating Shadow. This way, you can have Amy in the movie without needing to explain how she got to know about Sonic and started stalking him. Instead, she would just meet Sonic during the movie and fall in love with him at first sight. And having Amy and Shadow be sort of siblings would make his redemption scene more impactful as well. Then only Rouge is left from the SA2 story, but you could easily introduce her as a bounty hunter who heard about the Chaos Emeralds and is after them.

The bonding between Team Sonic added five years to my lifespan.

Speaking of the beginning, did Eggman reference the "do you know da wae" meme? Anybody else catch that?

The only thing that was missing from the movie was SEGA stuff cameos, more Sonic music references, and Sonic saying "Aw, yeah! This is happening!" while standing on the rooftop.

Honestly the only bit I have issue with in the movie is the wedding scene where Donut Lord realizes he has the wrong ring, I feel like that whole thing could have been done better like "hey, here's the real wedding ring, got mixed up cause of a joke I did" instead of, the awkward thing he did. 😆

I really do love this movie. I will say I've tried to be a bit more critical of it because obviously it's far from perfect but I feel like most bad things are complemented by very good things. Also Knuckles is amazing in every scene he's in. There is almost never anything bad when he's around. Overall, very fun time and I can't wait for 3.

Tails' backstory of being bullied was also in his Generations bio, I think, and even his Cookie Run Kingdom bio mentions how he used to be self conscious about his appearance, so by the time of the movie coming out, it wasn't as obscure as being only in the old Sonic 2 Japanese manual

Thanks for the video! I'm old (40s), I played Sonic (1, 2, and others) and to be completely honest never really liked the games, I was always more of an FPS guy. But I liked the character. Watched some of the cartoons and thought there was potential. Then came the first movie, which was way better than I expected, I really liked Sonic. Then, I loved the second movie even more. After thinking about it, I think what clinched it for me was the people that interact with Sonic, specifically Tom and Maddie. In most movies where there are fantasy characters interacting in the real world, most if not all adults are just stereotypical distrustful morons, and plenty of times it is the children that first befriends this fantasy characters. Not this time; fist we have Tom, which is full of doubts at the start, but eventually gets to know and befriends a lonely Sonic that craves to communicate, and by the end there's a very much earned friendship between Tom and Sonic that immediately expands to his very smart, loving, and amazing wife Maddie. The end of the first movie with the three of them on Sonic's new room was the real climax. Sonic has a real family and the Wachowski's now have a son they never expected to need or love so much. On the second movie, that love expands to the point where there is growing pains, but at the same time, there are lessons learned by Sonic and his character arc is even more resonant. The addition of Tails and Knuckles help in Sonic’s development of course, and they are amazing characters I can’t wait to see grow and develop, but there’s also growth with Tom and Maddie becoming more mature parental figures, without degrading into stupid, grotesque or lame preaching adults. They love Sonic more than ever, they trust him, too but also worry about him being lonely, knowing they can’t be with him always; but at the same time, they also proved that they will never abandon him, even if that means dying with or for him. That's when I realized: It’s the human connection that made me like the movies and Sonic so much. This is what they Sonic movies have nailed better than any other similar movies before it. Yes, the wedding scene could’ve been better edited but was still good and helped emphasize that Sonic trusts Tom and Maddie with his life. For me, the ending on the battle were they all hug is the emotional high point, perhaps only second to when Sonic calls Tom, dad. I believe the connection of Sonic with Tom and Maddie is the center and heart is the Sonic movies. Maybe this doesn't work for everyone, nor for people that knew Sonic from the games, but in the movies, the trio are now essential. If they take care, develop, and mature this relationship in the sequels, Sonic’s future as an extremely successful franchise will be all but guaranteed.

I could see the third one getting more intergalactic, having to travel around space to find the chaos emeralds or the ARK or something. Great video!

So I’ve rewatched the movie a few times. I’ve gotta say, I loved/love it. It’s funny, entertaining, and really just wants to give its viewers a good time. I noticed that sometimes, the animation just seem off. Like the part where Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails are taking a final stand before officially fighting Robotnik, their lips aren’t in sync. And after the dance fight, when Sonic runs to retrieve the map, the animation seemed to have just… stopped. But I gotta say, this was an awesome movie, and I loved it. So I definitely suggest anyone watch it.

10/10 Movie that made me cry through the glorious moments in the movie

I really hope Amy is in the next movie. We need to have a scene in which she confuses Shadow for Sonic. Also, the movie was great. The one scene that threw me off was when the bride was behind the food truck and was seen wearing sneakers, but then when she steps out of the golf cart she's then seen wearing heels.

One of the cool tidbits I saw was the toe kick Sonic used to finish off the Death Egg Robot being from his opening scene in Sonic 06

The scene I love the most is the tavern scene with Tails post-dance battle. Mostly because of Tails’ general wholesomeness. Genius idea using the OG actor for him, SEGA!

If knuckles is starfire levels of naive and silly, as well as starfire levels of badass, I think I'm okay with it.

I would love for shadow to be voiced by the current voice actor of master chief. That would be crazy and hilarious

Personally, my favorite idea for how the movies could play out, would be for them to go backwards in a way. Introduce and have the conflict with Shadow in the third movie, get GUN all up in it too, and from there you could probably do one or two more installments if piloted correctly, and then have a point in the movie narratives where our main cast has matured enough (to stay on theme with this movie's message for Sonic), to where they feel it prudent to take back off into the universe in search of a new home, since conflict continues bringing itself to Tom's doorstep. That gives them a wonderful backdoor to introduce the classic Sonic world as we know it, along with a few more characters instead as natives and new neighbors rather than folks pulled into Earth. You could have Knuckles use the power of the Master Emerald to CREATE Angel Island, as his safe place for the emerald, knowing full well that Tails and Sonic could come visit whenever they'd like. You could introduce more minor characters who would fit well into a more casual Sonic world setting, like the Chaotix or Cream and Cheese, and then to top it all off, you can have Eggman attempt to invade to destroy everything Sonic and team is trying to build, converting the animals and people there into mechs and getting our first proper Metal Sonic appearance as Eggman's war leader on the new lands, and in having all that you get the OG feeling of nature vs technology as Eggman attempts to enslave the more Sonic akin world. So you're essentially going from 2000s Sonic back down to Classic

The problem I had with Knuckles voice even in the trailer was it worked as Knuckles holding back his anger voice but didn't work for his casual communication voice. Even in the scene where he is open to Sonic, it sounded like Idris was shouting like he's trying to talk over. I loved the movie as a whole. Some things were a bit odd and even the Knuckles fixing the Master Emerald was rather odd. There was a good amount of references even in the fights like the rapid punches from Sonic X or even the bounce attack he used on Knuckles. I'm uncertain how they'll do Shadow's story. He was very Chaos Emerald focused. I don't know how they'll incorporate his abilities with the emeralds and the emeralds interaction with the arc.

If they go full SA2... they better not do the mistake Shadow for Sonic thing cuz even now in the games or in Sonic X that was SO dumb.

Watching this movie as a sonic fan was the best experience of my year so far. It’s just a delightfully fun movie. (Spoilers: As soon as they mentioned a 50 year old project in the ending credits scene I was immediately so excited about it bevause I knew what was being set up. That shadow reveal was incredible!!

I remember reading an article where Robert Patterson talked about how to get into the character of Batman he’d just play Sonic Adventure 2. So now I want Robert Patterson as Shadow! No, I NEED him to be Shadow! Imagine a Shadow movie staring Robert Patterson

This might be a stretch, but when Knuckles said that Super Sonic is no longer the Sonic they knew, I thought it was a subtle reference to the Fleetway Sonic comics, where Sonic would lose all sense of self and go berserk whenever he went Super.

Saw the movie on Friday, still can't stop talking about it with friends, so good, cannot wait to see what they do with Shadow, but does kinda blow it's not gonna be seen till another 2 years

You forgot to mention that in one part when Sonic jumps(I think in the part where he's having a party in the house or in the Russian bar)he does the Sonic Adventure pose of the first game which I loved.

I think the baseball scene was him finally relaxing after probably years of hard battle and agression

06 actually got a reference, watch the final battle with Super Sonic and Eggman and you might spot a reference to the opening cutscene of 06.

Regarding the post credits scene, I was honestly expecting Rouge to sneak into Prison Island to find Shadow similar to Heroes and the Tails post credits in Sonic 1. If they're going for the SA2 plot (it's highly likely) Rouge will definitely be there hired by G.U.N., and if Robotnik is alive he'll be working with her and Shadow, the rest I'm not entirely sure if they'll 1-1 the plot of Adventure 2, would be amazing though.

9:55 Ok imo, if they're trying to do the whole "Sonic getting Tails to be less nervous" thing with dancing, they should've had Sonic ask Tails for a device that affects with certain sounds (or melody in this case), and have them play "16BIT Magic" instead. (Because, to me, it works well for a Sonic fan and a casual audience movie goer stand point). And just for shits and giggles, have Sonic and Tails dance exactly like Modern and Classic Sonic for reference and nostalgia for 2010 Sonic.

Headcanon is that Stone is Amy in disguise and instead of simping for Sonic it's Eggman lol
