Ah yes the 3DS home to so many great games that have largely since been ignored. Today, we look back at one of themmm. Consider it a 3D Land Retrospective All Mario 64 footage in the video thanks to: / @jak7141
3D Land’s forgettability ironically adds charm to its identity for me. Every time I return to it I’m shocked by how much simple fun it is, only to get mindwiped 2 months later and repeat the process every couple years
I had those feelings, I beat mario 64 on emulator like 8 years ago because 4 years before that, a friend of my brother told him about it. in that time i only knew ps4 and the 360 (as just Xbox btw) i never knew the n64 even existed and that the Project64 was an emulator of that, playing the game was just "im gonna play mario". this is the experience of living in south america.

omg in the beginging when you said 3D Mario, let me tell you 3D Mario land was the ONLY thing I was thinking of. THAT 3DS GAME WAS LITERALLY MY CHILDHOOD. I loved it so much, it was the first and only Mario game I have ever completed on my own and it's one of my favourite and most nostolgic video game I've ever played since :))))
Dude ur literally me. I think unless u 3D land was your first Mario game it won’t hit as hard because sure it was simple but when we were young it hit a bit more different
I dont think anyone forgot it, just that nobody considers it the same as the other 3d marios so it's not included in lists, the same with 3d world, 3d land was what saved the 3DS in the first place
3D Land was the first game I played on a 3DS at my friend's house, and I specifically remember level 1-3. That part where you fall downwards between clouds blew my mind. Then I played Ocarina of Time 3D and the Deku Tree's ambience made me forget all about 3D Land lol. Most of my memories with this game are in the car on roadtrips, and it's really perfect for that. It's somewhat "forgettable," but still genuinely fun at the same time and I have nothing but fond memories with this game

I still to this day remember being 12 years old playing ocarina of time 3D for the first time and feeling so mystified by the Deku Tree. Something about the music and the dim lighting
OHH I love 3D Land!! It was one of my favourite games to play on my 3DS as a kid, and it was also the first and only Mario game I've ever (physically) had. So, it's music has pretty much been the only 'Mario music' I know and can instantly recognise. I'm surprised but glad that 3D Land is getting some talk instead of World whenever I would hear it. Good game :D
You had every chance to annoy me and make me click out but somehow you managed to do the exact opposite and even make it funnier every time. Love this video!
I think this, alongside 3D World are the most unusual of the 3D Mario games because, unlike the rest, they are literally 3D equivalents to the 2D Mario games
That’s what i love about it. It feels faithful to og mario games while also being its own thing. 3D world is my personal favourite mario game of all time
This is exactly what I thought! I never thought of it as part of the 3D library because it felt like a 2D title. That's to say it's not bad, but it just feels like it fits more with the 2D linear line of games rather than the 3D line.
@@epicalworlds2775 And at the same time, I am someone that does not like that. I am aware that I have a bias and prefer a Super Mario 64 or Sunshine to a Mario Bros or Super Mario Bros and that's ok. Because I do still acknowledge and respect the 2D line as the one that started it all. So while it's great that SM3DL has its spotlight....it's still belongs in the 2D category lol. That may also be because of the linearity it has that the other 3D titles don't
3D land itself isn't forgettable, its just that everything anyone would have wanted out of 3D land is already present in 3D world and honestly that makes Land feeling even more like a 2D Mario game with 3D levels than 3D World does more charming in its own way to me
And also because 3D Mario was usually associated with an "open world" game. As such, they prioritize 3D Land and 3D World less because they're like 2D Mario. But they prioritize 3D World more because it's on home console, leaving 3D Land barely talked. Or atleast that's how I see it.

@@RelatedSnow8420 The way I see it, 3D land and world were more like New super mario bros 3D and 3D2 instead of unique games that tried to stand out on their own. Just look at Galaxy, Sunshine and 64, they all stand out with each their own gimmicks. Yet world and land simply tries to be super mario bros, but in 3D. They don't really try to stick out in comparison. But maybe that was the plan all along, actually make them like that.
The exact same thing happened with Mario Kart 7 and 8/Deluxe. Mario Kart 7 is a great game that added gliders, underwater driving, the coin and fire flower as items, and customizable vehicles, among other stuff that 8 Deluxe is basically known for- which in comparison makes 7 look inferior because 8 expanded on all its ideas
My favourite element of 3D Land is the quite creative and intricate level design, as well as some of the new enemies. People would genuinely be shocked just how good 3D Land is, but seemingly everyone forgot about it in favour of 3D World. It gave us a lot of things that 3D World would later copy (Pom Pom, Stingbee, Boomerang Flower, etc.), so I don't know why 3D Land doesn't get the love it deserves.
I honestly prefer 3D land over 3D world. Land was more focused in its design and it worked wayyy better as a handheld. 3D world felt like 3D Land 2 not a brand new 3D Mario game.
So true. Many can say it is simple and not as thematically inspired as SM3D World and other Mario games, but those who have played it will agree it's simple pure fun. The level design is great, may look simple but it's not. It's more interactive than 3DW and more condensed.
Its like the perfect pick up and play game. Like you said theres the creative and intricate level design. The relatively short levels keep it feeling fresh in my opinion, as youre not spending a lot of time in each level. Its a top 5 mario game for me
I always remember 3D Land as being a testament to how good 3D Mario is in general. Despite being the weakest and most forgettable imo, it's still a really fun time. It's a shame that it couldn't form a strong identity for itself. I hope that when people do remember it, they remember it as a good game on its own and not just "the precursor to 3D World".
@@Beanzopsthere are some of 3d mario games. SM Odyssey SM Galaxy 1&2 SM 3d Land SM 3d world (if not counting it as a dlc Bowsers Fury) SM 64 (DS) MP (these that have 3d graphics.) Almost every Mario Kart after N64. Yeaaaa choose one that you like the most.
i loved this game as a kid and sometimes i would go to worlds just to listen to the world music. World 3 and Special World 3 had the best music, it is just so scrumptious and sounds like happiness 🥺
Nope as soon as he said "which one is this?" I yelled out loud "world 5!" When I was little I didn't have an mp3 player so I just listened to the world music from 3d land so I recognized it immediately
@@jossy-diedSpecial World 3's overworld theme is probably one of the most underrated mario music pieces of all time, glad to see I'm not the only one who really enjoys it. A lot of other music in the game is great as well
Great video. Subscribed! I spent countless hours as a kid playing Super Mario 3D Land and every clip brought back a lot of memories. It might not be the most special Mario game out there, but it was the first 3D Mario game I played and I explored those levels down to the last millimetre. Good times.
I will never forget when I got a 3DS for Christmas in 2015 bundled with 3D Land, so many memories were made. The music was and still is a bop and I think it’s what gives the game its charm and spirit.
SAME HERE I got this game for my 3DS and it was my entire life up until completion and even after that :))) loved this game with my whole life back then haha
Same, I won't forget the time my uncle bought a huge box with 3D land in it. I remember how hype I was playing at a party when I was introduced to the special worlds & Luigi! I had a 99% completion until the R button stopped working & so I couldn't complete it until years later I did & completed the crown level. I still have fun memories with it.
I remember asking my parents for super mario 3D world because I wanted it so bad, but during christmas they gave me a 3DS with super mario 3D land. Wasn't what I wanted, but I still went on playing it for the next few years and absolutely loved it. I also did get 3D world later.
Duude, Super Mario 3D Land was THE FIRST video game i have ever played and ever since then I be playin video games non stop. I didnt know how much it had been forgotten, and honestly, i kind of forgotten about it too, so im glad for someone to be making a video about this game.
Great vid! So glad I got recommended this channel/video. I remember loving 3D Land when it came out. I had a blast as a kid and plowed through all the levels, beating it in a fairly short time. Then when 3D World came out, I remember thinking, "What's the big deal? Didn't they just do this on the 3DS?" and I felt so bored and unimpressed. I thought the game was alright, but I liked Land a lot better. I haven't played either in ages, so maybe my opinion would shift, but I dunno. It's a charming little game. Maybe it's just nostalgia, maybe it's the admittedly cool uses of the 3D gimmick, or something else entirely but I'm glad people are (hopefully) starting to remember this game exists more and more. I felt like the only one wondering why people wanted Galaxy 2 so badly on 3D All-Stars, yet no one was mentioning 3D Land. Or how it would've been so cool if 3D Land been included on the Switch port of 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Oh well, maybe one day we'll see this hidden gem again.
I felt the same too, I thought Land was better and I felt really weird about how everyone loved that one and how it's now the one everyone has nostalgia for and treats like it's underrated lol.
this game was my childhood, 3D Land … so many memories, the feeling when you complete the game and you discover an underground world and you play as Luigi, was so happy the game wasn’t over yet
I would just like to say that 3D Land was my first ever Nintendo game and my introduction into the Mario series. I remember walking in the mall and seeing stands that were promoting the 3Ds and when I went to see what is was about, I saw 3D Land on the screen. I began playing a bit of it and was instantly hooked onto how cool it looked. I kept playing the level with the platform flip switches in World 2 and was so determined to beat that level. That’s when I fell in love with the game and eventually I got it as a gift. It may not be considered the best game in the whole series but it definitely can leave an impact on you. I’ll always love and appreciate this game!
3D land is only considered a bad or forgettable game because it's a MARIO game, and it already had a ton of 3d titles to compare it to--if an indy developer had released this with a coat of paint, it would have been considered a hidden gem on the console with charm and polish. The nature of being on a handheld (of the time) always meant that it was going to be a stripped down version of the console games, and, while many would say that and mean it as a pejorative, I think that's perfectly fine. I've actually always preferred handheld titles, for a number of reasons, but I think you're spot on about how what REALLY holds the game back is a lack of identity compared to the rest of the series. Every mainline Mario game has what I like to think of as "a moment" that cements it into the players mind forever. It's what Mario games excel at, really. Mario 3D Land is a Mario game without that moment to get the player REALLY invested. A good game, but not a FANTASTIC one you'll remember for the rest of your life.
@@edwardsaldana2534 Eh. They're not really comparable since one is a new game whereas the other is a remake. Besides, they're both great products. 3D Land is a fun popcorn flick you could always go back to for a simple yet fun time. 64 DS is rather impressive in how it's not a port, but a legitimate remake considering the additions.
Well, you're not wrong; I rarely see anybody talk about Super Mario 3D Land outside of it being the predecessor to Super Mario 3D World. While not my favorite 3D Mario, I still had a good time with it, and it's nice to see it get a little more love here.
Mario 3D Land was my first ever Nintendo game. It is and always will be my favorite Mario game, only because it introduced me to one of my absolute favorite game series. It is nice to watch a video that doesn’t beat up the game but doesn’t let u keep the rosé tinted glasses on. Thank you
I dont consider it a 3d mario game, to me it's a 2.5d game, of course this is about style of gameplay not dimensions, 3d world and 3d land are both 2.5d mario games to me, they're too much different to the other 3d marios and are not left to right like 2d mario, but still takes the 2d gameplay into a 3D environment
Super Mario 3D Land is definitely designed to be fun at the time you play it. It's so much fun that it's hard to even remember the level as you get bombared right away with the next level but I still love the creativity and cutscenes brought to the game and the nostalgia cuz it made up my childhood. Thank you for making this video and Super Mario 3D Land definitely is slightly underrated but yet so much fun and well made as a result.
When I first got my awesome blue 3DS for my birthday from a random guy at mcdonalds, I was given this game alongside it. This game was my favorite game to play anywhere, and watching this video and the gameplay brings back memories... when I was a kid I did not care about the story or the level design or any of that. I played it because it was an escape from reality and kept me entertained, which made me love this game, so say what you will about it being forgettable, but I remember it all and loved every second of it.
@@vwavefun No ur not tripping, I was in the play place at the top tube and was looking through the glass and saw my parents talking to the guy, they told me to come down and said they bought it for me. A crazy experience
I remember getting 3D Land as a christmas gift back when I was 12. We celebrated christmas at my grandparents house in the cold woods of Southern Sweden. Me and my family spent the night there. I remember booting up the game at bedtime and finishing it in one sitting. Good times...❤️
Heh, just like the 3DS altogether. Such a shame the servers for it is being shut down. I need a custom server to continue getting the daily bonuses from Culdcept Revolt...
I remember this game because of a halloween party I went to with family from over seas. I spent days with my cousin trying to help him get max stars on his save by replaying 1-2 while we talked about random things and ate Heath bars. One of the best holidays I have ever had, better than most Christmases and birthdays I've had.
It should be noted that 3D Land's hand-holding Invincibility Leaf has a companion. The P-Wing. Obtainable through either dying ten times in a skipped World (done via Orange Warp Pipes) or from special Golden Mystery Boxes, the P-Wing is basically the "Fuck this level" item if you find a particular level difficult as it sends you *straight to the Flag Pole* and *skips everything* including Star Medals. It should also be noted that by dying five times in *any* level you permanently miss out on getting shiny stars for *your* file as just *spawning* the Assist Block is enough to make your playthrough null and void. In later entries the Assist Block (or Super Guide Block) appear in can be spawned, but it can't be hit or a second run-through of the level it was in will be required to get shiny stars on your save file.
I hate how using these features permanently demote your ability to get the shiny stars. I died enough times in New Super Mario Bros. Wii because I wanted to play as Luigi but then realized later I wouldn't get the shiny stars.
Was waiting for Special 8's music and you delivered! That's the thing I remember best from the whole game years out from playing it. It feels tentatively hopeful rather than triumphant or hyped, and that's always stuck out to me. Played to 100% once and might go back for select levels someday, but probably never a full replay.
I love special world 8. I wish they would've opened the second half of it up and put Special 8-Crown there with a pipe from the second half of World 8 instead of replacing the pipe with Special 8-Crown, that's my only real nitpick. I replay this game from time to time. It's fun to bring it to work and play during lunch break.
i never forgot about this game. i played it when it first came out and i bought it again like 3 months ago because i had nostalgia and wanted to play it again. easily my most fav mario game
I remember beating this game 100% twice. I always found this game to be unique. It was like playing a 3D version of 2D Mario. I miss this game even though I still have it to this day.
I was, and still am, obsessed with this game. It somehow felt nostalgic right from the beginning. The music, the level design, the tanooki suit... I won't ever forget my first playthrough
Some moments of 3D land stuck with me, the music of the beach level is amazing, and the clock levels are very clever. Also, the special levels being chased by shadow Mario are pretty memorable
omg bro I loved this game so much, the memories I had on my 3DS with this game and the 3DS version of mario maker, everything about 3D LAND was so much fun for me, I loved this game inside and out, i'm ashamed to say when you did the intro bit I actually didn't even think of 3D land until you said it, I understand why though, it's because often times people forget its a 3D mario game, I think every 3D mario game deserves love, every one of them has it's own reasons to be loved, Mario 64 has an atmosphere and design style that will never age, it's the style that got used in many flash games that crossover sunshine and 64 and makes it feel special, Mario sunshine is the most memorable game in the franchise for me, it's the home of the loveable Delfino and Pianta people, from the music to the characters, the plot twist, the unique boss fights, it has so many moments that get overlooked, Super mario 64 DS, the game I played on my family trip to disneyland, love the memories from this game, and playing as Wario is one of the coolest aspects since he is very overshadowed, Super mario galaxy... possibly one of the greatest games Nintendo ever made, with a soundtrack that beats anything disney or star wars could even come up with, truly unique in every sense, with a story that made me cry over as a kid, Rosalina has such a sad backstory, truly art and an amazing game, Super mario 3D Land, overlooked alot but is by far one of the simply most FUN mario games out there, every moment from the first level to the end of the main story is 10/10 super fun, and the music gives such flashbacks, mario galaxy 2, while mixed in alot of ways including for me, has memories to it for me, I got it as a gift around the time I got surgery for my femur and could no longer walk, I was stuck sitting most of the next months, which gave me lots of time to play mario galaxy 2, the game I got as a gift for christmas, I still did not beat the game to this day yet, but the memories I made with my sister playing this game are priceless ones, mario 3d world, the first game I got on my Wii U, and one game I still remember my mom playing with me fondly, while it's not as fun as 3D land (I beat 3D land but i got barely anywhere on 3d world) it has its place in this series as being 3d land with family and friends, and while I never played Odyssey myself, it was such a different take on the series it just is self explanatory why it is a good game
I think the reason 3D land is often forgotten about is because the other 3D Mario games are far more memorable, 64 was the first, so obviously it wouldn’t be forgotten, sunshine introduced fludd and had a unique story, galaxy and galaxy 2 had the cool concept of travelling through space, 3D world was an amazing co op adventure, and odyssey has the capturing mechanic, 3D land took elements from the 2d games and made them 3D, so for some people it’s just 2D Mario, but in 3D
This game just so happened to come out at the perfect time for me. I spent so much time on public transit and this was the perfect time killer that had enough care in the level design, but was so casual in it’s presentation that I felt like I could pick it up and play anytime. I agree with every point in this video. 10/10 review.
Having grown up on both the DS and 3DS, this game, dark moon, phantom hourglass, and a link between worlds are among my favorite Nintendo games. Maybe it’s nostalgia but I enjoyed every minute of those handheld games and never once felt it was lesser because it was handheld. Thank you for making a video on this I don’t think I’ve seen anything about this game in ages
This was the most memorable, fun, game of my childhood. I still remember the day I was at target, and thought, “super Mario 3d land? Cool!” And bought it for 20 bucks, best game ever 10/10
this is a fantastically put together video, i love the frisbee scene at the end. you've broken the pattern of just 'talking over gameplay' video essays, and i really appreciate that. keep it up, bro
As a dude who played 3D land over 5 times now, i'm so happy it's finally getting the recognition it deserves. this was truly an amazing game. i remember killing myself on the final level over and over because i couldn't beat it and i just wanted that damn white leaf. i think it had cocaine on it or something because damn it makes you invincible
3D Land was one of my favorites ever, and I'm glad it was kind of forgotten. That means it can return and it will feel fresh again. All the better for how good it was.
This one is so memorable for me. I remember when I 100% it because I genuinely loved it growing up. So much that I kept asking my friend multiple times if I can borrow his 3ds for some day just to play it when I didn’t have one at the time. Hands down one of my favorite games for the system.
I feel like lacking that defining spark is what doomed 3d land to limbo. I still remember the rumble of my wii remote as I used a launch star for the first time but I can't remember my first experience with 3d land despite 100%ing both games and loving them.
I love watching this and looking at the framed SM3DL poster in my room. Its always been one of my favorites, grsmted it's mostly because of nostalgia, but still, it got me through my mid to late childhood.
I was actually talking with friends the other day about this game. In terms of 3d Marios we all ranked it low, but only because of the competition it has to face from the other 3d Mario games. Its not a bad game, but it's almost completely overshadowed.
i literally do, though. super mario 3d land is such a memorable game for me. it's literally what i think about when i think of 3D mario aside from super mario galaxy 1 & 2 lol.
I absolutely LOVE 3D land and for some reason it's really memorable for me. played it as a kid and it stuck in my head like a dream and now that I'm playing it again it's SO much fun. makes a ton of sense why nobody remembers it though
I love Super Mario 3D Land my sister got it on her birthday a couple years ago and I loved the game the levels were simple but fun the return of the tanuki suit was a lot of fun and the special words were very good and I love the music in the game.
@@flameofthephoenix8395 Even on lower settings? That's what most people reccommend if you use 3d. Barely not off. Just enough to pop in that fun way, but not so much that it overwhelms.
@@tcrpgfan Hm, I might have tried that, but it's been a while, is it a physical slider for how much 3d you want? If it's physical I probably tried it, but if it's hidden behind some settings menu there's a good chance I never did.
I still love playing this game, the worlds and music are extremely charming, and the boomerang bros and boomerang power up were such a good addition to the game
So far I haven't seen a comment about how phenomenal that last line of the video was. Fantastic joke. Perfectly captured the energy of the rest of the video in two words.
For a handheld Mario game, it's pretty good actually. I have good memories of playing 3D Land. The only thing that I didn't like, even back in the day, was the reused voice clips (From galaxy 1 & 2) for most, if not all of the characters. Like, didn't they have time for recording new ones or the devs just said "Lets use the same voice clips from the last two 3D Marios in this one"? It just feels off to me, but I still love it thoug. Also, what a great video, keep it up! (:
This was my first 3D Mario game and I always wondered why it never got any recognition. I 100% completed it and I have such fond memories of playing it as a kid.
It's sweet to see a phenomenon talked about that I picked up on even as a kid in the 3DS/Wii U era. It felt like all the attention was on World. Also sweet to hear SMT IV music in a video. Impeccable taste.
I got a 3DS for this game and Ocarina of time. It felt so cool having marios newest 3D adventure in my pocket. I must of beat it 15 times. One of the most memorable for me.
3D land was and always will be one of my favourite super mario games. It's up there with Mario 3, sunshine, and Galaxy for me. I remember spending hundreds of hours playing this game all the way through with mario and luigi, getting 100% of EVERYTHING. I will always LOVE this game, and I love it when people talk about it. It's also the game that got me interested in speedrunning.
Mario 3D Land was one of the best performing 3DS games with almost 13 million units sold. It was far from being ignored and I'm sure a lot of people enjoy it till this day.
When people say "ignored" or "forgotten", they generally mean it does not get brought up in fandom discourse regardless of sales figures. Like rarely is anyone saying this is their favorite 3D Mario or clambering for its sequel. 3D World has done so much to overshadow this game's legacy
@@sawkchalk6966 I know this is RU-vid and you have to overdramatize things. But in retrospective 3D Land arguably was like a blueprint for 3D World to build upon. Match that witch the fact that the switch has 20 times the processing power of the 3DS and its a no brainer that 3D Land pales in comparison.
@@Cytronik I think the video explains it well that the issue is how forgettable 3D Land is on account of no world map or gimmick. Yes it laid the ground work for a very beloved game, but it's hard to appreciate it's contributions to Mario in a vacuum
@@sawkchalk6966 Definitely. And I will continue this video after finishing the doc im currently watching. The title was just a bit confusing to me haha
I don't care what anyone says, Super Mario 3D Land will always be memorable to me. I have awesome memories of playing this game in late 2011 and early 2012, loving every minute of it. It's just a fun time and it's more creative than it usually gets credit for.
Honestly, I never forgot about it. I still remember the day I first got the game.I spent so much time on 3D Land as a kid. I even beat the entire game twice including Luigi on both. And I even started a new game again.
My first memorable moment in my first 3d game was super Mario galaxy in Rosalina’s story book, it made my little kid self cry bc if also the immersion and emotional impact, thats why galaxy is so memorable, because of its immersion, the music, and the emotions it makes you feel while playing.
