It takes a HUGE puddle. In my area we get spots where it's no less than 10in deep and it's hard to tell from inside the car. A small puddle < 5in is fine.
That's customer speak for "I tried to ford a flooded road that should've needed a boat". They're lucky they didn't hydrolock their engine (you don't do that in ICE vehicles).
Late 1990's Chrysler/Dodge minivans with the 3.8 LOVED to throw the belt off in heavy rain or after hitting puddles. It was so common in the early 2000's to see one or two on the shoulder or in parking lot entrances with the 4 ways on during/after every storm and both my brother and I would stop, put the belt back on, and send them on their way with the instructions to do exactly what you did here- new belt and a tensioner! It got so easy that we could do it in under 2 minutes and only get one hand dirty and no, we never accepted any payment for helping someone out!
I cant imagine working in a shop where the hoist has a braking cable and your told to use it still. about a month ago I noticed my hoist at work was lowering slowly. had it inspected within a week. found metal debris in the hydraulic fluid. pump eating itself. had an entire brand new full hoist installed 2 weeks later lol.
@@0xFF48"...your..." should be "you're" correct English and Internet comment sections are mutually exclusive. But, the cables are only used for lifting and lowering the vehicle. When the lift is parked and locked for work, it's on a mechanical stop which has nothing to do with the cables.
I am proud to welcome you to the International Accessory Belt Whisperers Association (IABWA). You have achieved the rank of Master Warlock! Congratulations on your new rank; please help yourself to the donut buffet in the rear of the building. It's always so tempting to go for that smooth idler pulley, and after over a decade, I STILL do it every time. But, the physics say otherwise. Go for the largest pulley without a huge flange, as you'll have more stretch in the belt, and a better chance of "catching" part of the belt to give you extra leverage, as you demonstrated here. :)
I heard that comment, "my lifts won't have that problem". So, when's the shop opening? When I retire, I'm moving to Florida. 6 year plan. And a good, trustworthy mechanic is hard to find.
@@donakahorse Yeah, you got yourself an SJW car. Get rid of it fast or it'll start looking for reasons to call you a racist or some kind of "phobe" or "ist" or accuse you of some kind of "ism".
My belt does that as well; particularly when I spill water from filling the windscreen washer container. Didn't think this was a fixable thing. Thanks!
Hi Ray when you finish your next job on that ramp and it's back down get an angle grinder and cut that cable . No one gets paid enough to risk life or limb on knackered equipment. I've seen ramp arms go and those cars come down really fast.
There is a formula for determining if a steel cable is OK or not. This depends on the construction of the rope. I used to inspect mineshaft winder ropes up, to 38mm diameter on a daily basis. OH! and if I said it was OK to use, I was the first person to travel to the bottom of the shaft and back to the surface..... I'm still here.

Okay, that belt scene had more suspense than most horror movies i've seen... i was on the edge of my seat for about twenty minutes straight, and trying to reach into my computer to give Ray an extra hand.
Got to admit I let out a little cheer when the belt finally went over the crank pulley. Would have been great to have had the Mission Impossible theme tune running in the background too.
Man, I'm glad I wasn't the only one!! This back seat mechanic-ing is tough! The second Ray started the idler bolt, I said: "don't forget it's a left thread!"
This is precisely why I don’t do serpentine belts. It’s too complicated to figure out how to route them properly. My 54-year-old brain gets exhausted trying to do that much work!🥴🥴🥴
Did this job twice on a Sonata with the same engine -- most convoluted belt routing I've ever seen. The second time, I replaced the tensioner and both idler pulleys, just in case. Didn't want to do that job again!
I love your videos as you go through the entire thought process and fault finding sequence to show. 1. You do not rip people off and 2. how other can find their own faults first to save time. Something as simple as pouring water on the belt to prove a slipping belt. Love it.
Glad its not just me! 😁😁 You know its reverse thread, but when you go to tighten or loosen. Your instincts takes over and you treat it like a regular bolt/nut✊
In 1973, I was trying to get from Columbus, Ohio to Cleveland, Ohio at night and in a pouring rain. I was driving my mother's 1965 Ford. After about 50 miles the alternator light came on. I made it another 30 miles running on the battery before the car died. I got someone to give me jump start and leave the cables on for a few minutes to put some charge into the battery. I made it another 30 or so miles before the car died again. To add to my worry, I tried calling my brother and was told he had been hit in the head with a sledge hammer and was in the hospital. So, I got another jump start and eventually made it to Cleveland. The next day my father looked at the car and asked me why I didn't just tighten the fan belt. That was before flat grooved serpentine belts. Dad said the belt was so loose he could almost pull it off. Once the belt was tightened, the alternator and charging was fine. AS for my brother: He had been helping a friend with some construction. He picked up a sledge hammer and swung it back, not realizing my brother was so close behind him. My brother recovered but he did continue to have a dent in the middle of his forehead. I don't know if I can stand to watch 20 minutes of this video to get to the obvious. Either the belt is worn and/or the tensioner is shot. At this point, probably both.
If only there was some type of mark or something on left threaded bolts so you knew what is was for sure.instead of just guessing after cranking it the wrong direction.
Had a idler pulley fail 100 miles from home on December 23 and it started to snow. Had a tow truck drop me in the parts store parking lot bought parts and tools and in 2 hours I was on the road glad my dad passed mechanical ability to me.
So is that poor hyundai i own the same car ive changed that belt on the side of the highway with the flashlight on my phone and a walmart socket set you dont have to take the wheel off unless your a boob
As soon as you said the belt didn't look long enough I thought 'oh but it is' and had a fair idea what you were in for. This is exactly like a 2006 Odyssey.
Early '70s, I had a 1969 Fiat 124 sports coupe with a 4 cylinder 16 valve dual overhead cam Jag engine in it. The Jag engine was installed by fiat. Anytime I got it out in the rain, you could bet it would stall. Somehow the ignition system was not sealed well enough to prevent water from getting inside and distributor. Did everything I knew to do including putting silicone around the Basin distributor caps and installing new plug wires. Never did get it to stop. If it was raining outside, I would have to take my wife's vehicle to drive to work.
i had that happen to my minivan - after many "repairs" dealership fixed it! protective shield had fallen off or left off after first repair. by belt was replaced 6 times and multi useless replacement parts.
In the past I’ve changed serpentine and other drive belts that unfortunately were too short by a few millimeters. Depending on th manufacturer I’ve had to go to the dealer for an OE belt. This has happened to me on fords and Toyota. Watching you I feared that might be the case with belt you were trying and happy to see it fit. I’m sure you’ve run into short belt situ in your day. As always good job Ray.
Must be the first time for him too. Sure looks like it. My grandmother can change a belt faster and shes been dead for 10years. We found out that her corpse recently voted for joe biden
That's exactly what would happen with my 07' Corolla. Almost didn't matter what size puddle. Funny thing is, shop said "NAH" to the belt and tensioner.
The rule of thumb we went by in maintenance was that if you can see a broken strand in a cable, there are three more broken strands that you cannot see. Seven broken strands is the "Take Out Of Service" threshold. You pointed out two visible, which implies eight broken strands in total. That cable definitely needs to be replaced.
The last hole the belt goes on is the power steering Hyundai belts both of them always only go on in a particular order sucks cause I think u gotta remove the bracket up top to feed the belt comfortably and easily
When cleaning the Engine compartment, have you tried using Simple Green cleaner? Spray the engine compartment before you leave the bay, leave set about 15 - 20 minutes then rinse off, leaves everything leaner. Just a thought.
Those are equalization cables and do not support the weight of the vehicle. Nonetheless, they should be changed in the interest of safety. Thanks for the great videos Ray!
It's nice of them to put a hole in the splash guard so you can get a socket on the crank pulley bolt, but I wish there was a plug for that hole, too! You know, for splashed water.
Thank you for the special care of washing the engine compartment, you're a nice guy Ray! I reached out to help with the belt but my arm wasn't long enough. Great job!
I own a '08 Optima 2.4 had same issue. in a slow left turn, say turning into a pkg lot, when raining/after rain, driving thru puddle. And ONLY in a left turn. Same exact thing! finally changed belt at 150k. seems to have fixed it. (worn out belt? not cracked at all btw) AND WHAT A BEAR TO PUT NEE BELT ON! Had to have a friend help from the top! FM! it sucks working on your back. js YES, That is the water pump on the left 😎
I know when it's damp out, the belt on my Fiero slips for a bit when first started, the one that controls the alternator. I can tell since the battery guage is low until the squealing stops.
You saved the day rainman , now they can drive through really deep bodies of water without the worry of the no charge light coming on , I hope there’s at least one life jacket in the backseat of this amphibious vehicle 😅
My car made that noise when the alternator stator had corroded and jammed the rotor. It caused the belt to slip and howl on engine start. The alternator case was cracked and gradually seizing solid. Water on the belt made it worse.
One of the things I've learned from your vids is that a lad with huge paws and forearms is going to struggle as a mechanic in certain situations. Small hands and long, slender fingers are a definite plus. Not as important as an encyclopedic knowledge of vehicles but certainly a factor. X-ray vision wouldn't hurt either, hehe.
The same thing happened to my 2010 KIA after driving through standing water. I knew exactly what was wrong. We had no lift and changed the belt from the top. It did require 3 hands but took less than 10 minutes
Overhead hoists require regular inspections. At least a annual inspection (OSHA). To replace a hoist cable (any load bearing componet) will require a load test. Most hoist operstors manuals shpuld have a monthly inspection check-list. OSHA will always wsnt to see your hoist inspection documentation.
Mahalo for the video, you’re slowly giving me the confidence to do minor repairs on our cars. Is it typically easier to finish installing the belt on larger pulleys or smaller pulleys or idlers? I notice you recently leave more black frames between scenes than before. Is there a reason behind the change? Broadcast TV has pretty much eliminated black frames between commercials and promos nowadays. I realized how much I miss that after some of your videos.
I think the ease of getting a serpentine belt back on might just vary from design to design. The two cars I deal with it the most on, it's easy a pie, once you figure out what tool to use on the tensioner, how far you can move the tensioner, and which pulley would be easiest to slip the last bit of belt over while you have one hand on that tool.
I had a customer years ago that stated when driving through a puddle on her 5 series BMW the engine stopped, and wouldn't restart.. when I got it on the ramp I noticed both headlights were half full of water, when I got the under trays off it had snapped both engine mounts and kicked a leg out of bed. Supprisingly BMW paid for all the repairs 😂🤣😂🤣
I have the technical and musical skills to come up with something pretty good and funny, but I need at least 3 weeks to do it. I also need enough people who also think it's a good idea so I'm not just amusing myself and Nick. If I do this I will keep it as light-hearted and complimentary as possible. Oh, and audio only; no video. I hope Ray doesn't mind. I already have the base melody for the song in my head.
We had training on this at the power station, and finding a cable in that condition was cause for taking the crane or chainfall out of service. Management frowned on "heroes" dropping 5 ton motors.
I see where you’re going with this, but that Hyundai is probably only 1/3 of the capacity of that lift. A couple of broken strands won’t be an issue unless he’s trying to lift a utility truck. The fact that the cable is fatigued definitely warrants repair, but it’s still usable in limited capacity
also imagine some of the operators of the lift are less smooth when lowering it again, like nudging the lift down in increments can put much higher initial strain on the cable than under continuous operation.
I own one of these car and did the belt and tensioner last week. Never have I yelled at a belt, like I did at that one. I was also yelling “ reverse thread at ray, but it took him a while to listen! 😅
Ray, your intelligence and elocution are unparalleled. Sometimes I feel I am listening to a college professor, rather than an automotive technician. That was a very tight fit for that serpentine belt, but you accomplished the job admirably.
I fought the same condition on my car recently. I ended up breaking the tensioner and buying a different belt. I bought an AC Delco belt the first time. When I couldn’t get it on, I googled to make sure they gave me the right one and it was. After I broke the tensioner, I had to go get another one and I picked up a Dayco belt with it. It was visually the same length, but it must have been an extra 1/4” longer. Even when I released the new tensioner, the belt barely budged.
I've got two oil changes and a brake job today and I wasn't moving outa this chair until you got that belt on. It's like watching a movie waiting on the finale and credits.
I ran into this I ended up changing the power steering belt and the alternator belt they were pretty stretched out and cleaned the up the pullies with break clean i did noticed that a few coolent hoses were leaking and I replaced the hose clamps afterwards she never had a problem it's the same make vehicle but just a different model
Serpentine belt is slipping is my guess. I had the same thing happen to my van and twice the serpentine belt came off. The mechanic I had at the time changed the pulleys that the serpentine belt ran on with pulleys with lips so it wouldn’t slip off.
that's the Hyundai way. Imagine having to do this in a parking lot, with very few tools. I had the pleasure 10 years ago, Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Crdi. Tensioner had problems so sometimes, when starting the engine the belt slipped off!!! Of course on weekend, no spare parts, no mechanic, and million miles from home, so DIY. Nice work, I was actually reliving that particular hour of my life again 🙂.
New belts are built to scare with the "wrong size" fear ..... Even on "her indoors' ''" 2008 Camry..... I did get a belt routing diagram printed off afore I started... Heavy duty Walmart XX battery plus new belt plus mega cheap ebay Lucas alternator (just for fun, still got the Toyota one)...and 18 moths in, all is super sweet...
Similar to my Kia Sportage. I found the tensioner bad, but someone used the 1/2" socket driver, the square portion that the socket mounts to, to move the tensioner and they cracked it in half. I don't know if the tension was low, but it was a pain to change the belt.
25:30 reminded me of a time my wrench slipped off the tensioner nut, cause my fingers to get crushes. I couldn't get them out, I was bent over the car, screaming for help. That was not a fun job. Now, I always keep an extra wrench for the tensioner in my pocket. lol
Ray replace those cables on that lift. Back in the 80s, I dropped a Chevy caprice it came in for its first oil change. I was under the car and other mechanics called me to help push in another car and within 10 seconds we heard some strange sounds, and it came crashing down. I watched those videos of you going through that hurricane your family needs you, please fix that lift
My one wrench similar to the set your advertising is the 14 & 12 mm and it says Monster tools on it. Bought it from a guy who has a tool truck that's not brand affiliated and he only had one left because the sets go like hot cakes he said
