This is why I prefer to watch your reviews, because you cut through the B.S. I see the focus breathing as more of a slight zoom in and doesn’t bother me at all, as you showed with DaVinci there are fixes for some things as well and I want these lenses even more now. Those that complain are just looking for anything to bitch about it seems. If they just want the clinical clean look and don’t like the character in these lenses then why are they watching an anamorphic lens review to begin with? Thank you for the video!

Bro. Couldn’t have explained it better myself. I think a lot of this community has been infused with tech bros who care more about the gear rather the TOOL.

I think most of the time focus breathing helps tell the audience that their 'focus' (pun intended) should be shifted to a new spot in the frame. The anamorphic breathing looks great.

One of the most compelling things about these lenses is that they fit full frame and look good. My go to for full frame anamorphic is the Orion with the atlas full frame expander. I’m in no way comparing these to an Orion, totally different beasts (although a surprising amount of similarities too). BUT When we want to shoot gritty anamorphic even if the client doesn’t require the Orion that’s still typically what I go with because it’s just the option that checks all the boxes we need. But for lower end clients, the Remus checks those boxes as well and we can buy a full set for the same price as a 4-5 day rental on a SINGLE Orion. Crazy times we live in!!!

@@cammackey , Yeah, I really don't get the varying opinions on these lenses, man. Like, how can people not understand that we're getting full frame anamorphic for $800 PER LENS?!?! The 100mm I found really soft IF, IF I'm shooting subjects that are really close. Once that subject moves about 15-20ft away, GD it looks awesome. Shooting landscapes on the 100 at T4 looks amazing.

Great breakdown. Love how cinematic the footage of your reviews are; from the color grade, to choice of font, music, style, etc. At 2:27, when talking about sharpness, is this a window around your head? Leftover from an unfeathered matte or from the lens? Was really studying this portion of the review (I'm a guy that likes to shoot anamorphic in the desert, wide open, tons of ND and a Pola, to give blurred/bokeh texture).

I seem to like the 1.5x stretch of the Remus vs the new Cato at 2.0x. Also with 16:9 UHD you would need to cut some of that extra "wideness" for standard cine aspect ratio. Also being able to slide in ND's and other filters in the back with the adapters is a killer feature as they're not as deep as other PL lenses. Thanks a lot for the amazing review and tips!

@2:50 when you talk about f8, your hand is so sharp and the background visible yet soft and frankly separated that you seem to be standing in front of a decor (not in a negative way). Just to say that this sharp/out of focus separation is of high quality for those who can manage.

I don’t think a lot of people realize that most films are shot that way. Environments are part of the story. Like the zombie movie that Snyder made.. the way he shot almost annoys my eye and makes it hard to watch cause it’s all wide open

@@cammackey It was a pain to watch that movie, I spotted the f1 first scene and hoped it won't last. 2 hours of shallow depth of field is extremely painful. It's like he was a newbie discovering f1 and wanted to do everything with it. Depth of field must be a conscious and motivated choice that helps the story and helps the viewer read the scene, not just an aesthetic choice that becomes a running joke.

I was literally looking into the mercury lenses from atlas a few weeks ago and then I noticed these lenses at an even lower cost. Kind of incredible time to be a filmmaker because these could pass as C series if you shot them right. A tip on the lens distortion bit from a VFX guy, you can shoot lens grids to accurately replicate and correct distortion to pinpoint accuracy. Just day before the shoot print one out on a big sheet of paper, but it in front of each lens and record a few seconds. In the Fusion tab of Davinci you get much finer control over the type of distortion including anamorphic squeeze options.

Thank you for such an in depth video cutting through all the things that don't really matter and concentrating on the things that do. For me they will be an entry point into shooting anamorphic. I shoot mostly on Blackmagic Ursa 12k and 6k Pro but also on an FX 3. Assuming it would be best to get these in EF mount? and then can also use them on my FX3 with an adapter. Anything that I need to keep in mind in terms of using them with an adapter? Shimming the lenses would be new to me but I'm assuming that's specific to each lens and not in using those lens with an mount adapter.

You want to take focus breathing out of commercials. it’s a story telling device for narrative work. You want barrel distortion and character, that’s why you go anamorphic. I don’t know who this group of people is who want fast clean sharp f2 anamorphics without character…. But please choose a lane?? If you want clean lenses go spherical, if you want anamorphic…. Don’t expect a clean lens. Expect something different.

I would buy a anamorphic lens for the characteristics and extra horizontal FOV, and since I use s35 sensor (xh2s) I would belive buying a FF lens like this is not the best options as would loose a lot of the image characteristics near the edges because of the 1.5x crop, like its often softer or fuzzier and stuff near the edge, or Im I wrong? should you use s35 anamorphic lens to get all the "quirks" in the image circle of a s35 sensor compared to a FF lens?
@toneohm
@toneohm 7 месяцев назад
right,, it should be overall sharper bc you're using more of the center of the lens with the S35 crop.., BUT.., if you decide to go FF at some point.., you'll already have a lens that can accommodate.., BUT..., if you're sure you're going to stay S35..., a dedicated S35 sized anamorphic lens would be of use to you.. it will be cheaper, likely smaller and less weight.. and meant specifically for your sensor size.. by nature, I like S35.., its what I grew up using.. its what cinema was built around, often leads to smaller lenses.., the main reason I like low light is for the dynamic range.. that's the main thing.. and achieving a wider field of view more easily.. the more shallow DOF.., I don't really care for.. S35 is plenty for that aspect.. So yeah, it all depends on which anamorphic lens in.. you could get a Laowa Nanomorph.. OR.. you could get a Vazen MFT.. (which is manage to do S35 in most cases) and that way.., you're using all of the Vazen's lens, so you'll definitely get the focus fall off that you're talking about.., whereas the Nanomorph.., even though its smaller, lighter, and cheaper than a Vazen.., its a much sharper lens all-round so its going to have a little more of the old anamorphic character and a lil more of the modern sharpness.. not to mention the stretch isn't as extreme as a Vazen.. and its convex.. not concave like most traditional anamorphics.. I do prefer barrel over pincushion.., but, its not the end of the world either.. Cooke's have pincushion and they're essentially the best cine lens optics ever imo.. along with Zeiss and Panavision
@cammackey
@cammackey 7 месяцев назад
I agree a lot with the other comment. But I will say the nanomorphs don’t really have any character, Laowa went more for a clean look. Which is great if you like that! Vazen actually were making great lenses. Their 27mm was my fav S35 lens to this day. But if you’re planning on shooting s35 open gate on your Fuji, a 1.8 or 2X lens will suit you much better. Cause 1.5X on open gate is just basic 16x9

I've shimmed plenty of lenses before, but to do these I found I had to switch to 6:5 and turn on in camera sharpening to max, otherwise all I could see on 4x monitor magnification was blurred lines ;-) With the 100mm I did have to stop it down to T4 to be able to see the chart's lines clearly enough at 3.5m, but now its images are fantastic. Thanks for taking your time to break down all the myths and chatter and show us real life usage examples of these lenses as well as some of your post processing tweaks. I was surprised to see the 100mm on the projector at T4. I think that lens has a lot of potential. For my usage, I'm still undecided between getting this set vs 2 Proteus lenses. My main concern is the funky edge on the 45mm but seeing how they clean up with a little bit of lens correction, kinda make me lean towards the Remus again. If only talking about the look. incl. flares, I think the Mecury's are better, but those are beyond my budget and out of all other available options the Remus removes the barrier to big budget looks like no other lens and I really love that!

I was going to DM you but maybe you’ll see this comment. I’m like 99 percent sure I’m going to get the Sirui Saturn 1.6 anamorphic just because they are even smaller. Not perfect like these but I think I would value their compact size as I’m just starting out with anamorphic and they mount directly to my Sony. Any huge cons that would make you stay away from the Sirui vs just getting the Blazar Remus?
@cammackey
@cammackey 6 месяцев назад
Man. So much I could say. Cant really say it all here haha. My opinion is.. the Remus are the first budget anamorphics that actually look anamorphic. If you want the real anamorphic look at the same price.. the Remus are it right now.

@@cammackey cool thanks. I think I’ve decided after research to get these instead. If you were to start with just 2 which ones would you get? I’d either do the 45mm & 100mm or the 45mm &65mm

Great video! I have one question, how can I desqueeze footage to 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 at Davinci Resolve??
@cammackey
@cammackey 2 месяца назад
I would reformat your question first. “How do I desqueeze my _._X lens?” In your media pool, highlight all your anamorphic footage, right click, click “clip attributes”, you’ll see “square” click that and you’ll have all the desqueeze options. From there just chose what you want your final timeline deliverable to be and fill the footage to that ratio.

@@cammackey Awesome, you are the only youtuber I have seen to purchase the blue flare version. Every other video I have found on these are of the amber version. However, some of the other videos (namely, the one from mathieu stern) have shown that the amber version actually will take on the color of the source of the light (shine a blue light and the flare will be blue!). This just makes me wonder if this is the case with the blue flare lenses as well. When you shine an orange light at your lenses do you get an amber flare? Or is it amber but with a cooler tint? Thanks!

The 45mm for sure. Also I don’t think people realize that most of these S35 cameras aren’t actually s35 but smaller haha

idk if I have a lens that doesn't breath..., I think it looks much much better and more professional... I have an old Cooke S16 cine lens and bc there is zero focus breathing.., it just looks so much more fluid and seamless.. that being said.., anamorphic focus breathing is much more acceptable to me.., simply bc it looks cool hah

@cammackey ppl forget that it wasn't all that long ago, when pro-sumer level anamorphic wasn't even a thing lol.. 10 years ago I was using a Canon with a 1.6x crop in 1080p/24fps with a 10 minute recording limit and it would overheat before you'd even get there cause it was hot enough with all the fresnel lights you needed bc of the like 4 stops of DR they had 😆 Grateful for all the advances in digital film.., one of the only aspects of modern tech I really like
