Ad Astra. This movie is not everyone's cup of tea. It has some really good stuff, but it's also overlong, over-narrated, and a little too heady. Oh, and the sins. Gobs of 'em.
Next week: '90s horror sins and '90s action sins.
No movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

Yeah, but that also doesn't make sense. Those antennae were basically very tall towers. But what's the point of building up from the ground into a hundred kilometers up when you can just send satellites into orbit? This movie made me cringe with how badly it abused technology/engineering for the sake of the (rather lame) story. Like, yeah we have a colony on the Moon, so the best way to get to a launch point is to travel in Apollo-style rovers? He swims through an underground lake, and enters the spacecraft by a hatch somewhere next to the engines? That's not how rockets work, ever. The monkey space lab was complete nonsense. I wouldn't mind all this shit so much if there weren't videos floating around by the creators of this movie yapping about how this is all science-based.

@@asgerchristensen5067 A space elevator from Earth would go up about 36,000 kilometers. In the movie it's just some towers a few hundred kilometers high. If this was a space elevator, there would be no point of having anybody in a station along the middle of it. I'm fine with some fictional designs for the sake of the story, but I don't like the fact that it's making people like you ignorant about the actual science.

This movie was really underwhelming for me. I had high hopes it would suck me in and keep me on my feet, but each moment I kept waiting for something more *dramatic* to happen and it never did. I thought the dad would've somehow found his way back to his spacecraft and disarmed the bomb, or somehow snuck aboard the son's spacecraft and surprise attacked him by saying "I'm not done yet." -- Just SOMETHING. Or wtf was with the weird lights almost like maybe some alien ships coming down out of Neptune's rings when he was about to head toward the spinning antenna? I thought "omg, what if they DO show appearance of life but it's too late and the dad would never know!!!" I was just waiting the entire damn movie for a climatic ending and it was just very underwhelming!!! I wanted to like this movie better, I really did. Very disappointing. Just missed the mark completely as a good space exploration movie. And yes, the freakin' rabid baboon was completely out of place with no explanation at all and never mentioned again..... smfh. Just unnecessary and makes you go "wtf was that all about" 🤨
@andrewtran4237
@andrewtran4237 Год назад
I don’t think it’s meant to be about space exploration; sure, it’s a major part of the plot, but it’s more reflective, more about the human condition, depression, and loneliness, something that it encapsulates really well. Although, I do understand how frustrating it would feel if the expectations of a traditional sci fi movie aren’t met

Yeah but that was on purpose. Putting a sad daddy issue story in space was a way to illustrate how lonely it feels and how it feels like the wait of a lifetime to finally confront the parent who abandoned you. It is saying that trying to fix things with a parent like that is bleak and hopeless, and that space is bleak and only brings death. Unlike the other movies you mentioned, this was not a story about a person fighting for survival. It's a story about someone feeling alone for a long long time, and wondering for a long long time, if I tried to reconnect with my parent, would it fix things. I thought it did a really good job at showing how pointless and depressing it is, to hold out hope that the father son relationship could be fixed. It's like the way people hope to find other life forms in space, it's actually hopeless.

I’ve just seen this for the first time, beautifully filmed but it is so slow moving and so many pointless plot lines. As a bit of a space geek the bit that really annoyed me was when Roy used the metal panel to act as a shield when he went through Neptune’s ring. The particles in the ring will be travelling at orbital velocities so shouldn’t they have gone straight through the panel and into him? The Giotto probe that flew by Halley’s Comet had 2 Kevlar shields to protect it from the material coming off the comet, sensors detected dozens of them penetrating through the outer shield and eventually it was hit so hard that it lost contact with Earth. There was a really good movie in here trying to get out but it was badly executed
@daedalos5132
@daedalos5132 Год назад
His forward motion should have stopped when he met such a thick debris field. Would've been epic if instead, he took two slabs of metal and held them in a 'V' shape in front of him.. so at least it would seem semi-realistic that he made it through the rings, with the rocks deflecting off the shields instead of hitting dead on. Still silly, but at least the attempt would've been appreciated.
