I remember back in college, my psychology professor said she really liked this movie's depiction of amnesia and of Drew Barrymore's condition. I think that was the first time I had ever heard of this film, honestly.
Here's another reason why sinning this movie is a jerk move: The whole concept of Henry making a video catching Lucy up on what she missed is now a real treatment people with this condition use because of this movie!
You're going kamehameha on Jeremy's ass over this movie and I LOVE IT! Honestly, you even recognize that this movie is surprisingly heartwarming, which is just great. You also sort of bent my mind with that hypothetical, but mostly made me sad that CS hasn't done Truman Show yet just so you can do that movie.
Logo sins just make no sense. Unless it’s Uncharted, like I felt relieved as soon as the ‘Columbia Pictures presents’ card came up because that film had so many logos.
@@amostlyreasonableguy I actually forgot about that one. I remember really enjoying it. I tried to watch Big Daddy a few years ago and almost cringed myself to death.
I love this movie so much, my mom and i would watch it all the time. I have it on VHS (we didnt have a DVD player) cuz she gave it to me. Only thing i still have that was hers, miss ya mom.
Hi, um, I love your EWW CinemaSins videos and I kinda wanted to rant on this video that I've watched several times. The rant is more or less about my guilty pleasure movie and seeing how you defend it so confidently kinda gave me confidence to write this here because I don't know where else to rant. My guilty pleasure movie is 'Strange Magic' and you may not have heard of it because many people disliked it and many critics thought it sucked. When I watched reactions to the movie the most constant thing that popped up was there was too much singing and not enough talking...when it's meant to be a musical using already existing songs to help tell the story... What makes me so mad about it is they forget it's meant to be a musical and that the songs chosen are to portray the thoughts of characters, portray their feelings and give them theme music by having THEM sing it instead of it being in the background because it gives more depth to development. I admit the bit JUST BEFORE the credits was weird, but the story was the best part and the happy ending was great as well! The way the people I saw criticize that it had too many songs would be like saying Hamilton had too much rapping and not enough ACTUALLY singing... say the sentence out loud...hear how dumb it sounds? REALLY DUMB!! Because saying a musical has too much singing and not enough talking is identical to saying a musical has TOO MUCH talking and NOT ENOUGH singing! I know the movie used already existing songs but that's what's so great and creative about it! Using existing songs is amazing because songs always tell stories without always giving you a visual look or only the aftermath and using them in the film was THE BEST THING EVER!! In the beginning, when Marianne sang 'Can't help falling in love' it portrayed how much of a fool in love she was and when duet-ing with Roland the way they both sing the song shows their personalities AND when Roland looks into the river it is the second time we get to see who he truly is but it doesn't click because we are seeing things from Marianne's view which is rose-colored glasses! Then the next song 'I'll never fall in love again' shows Marianne taking off the glasses and seeing what guys are truly like, or at least guys like Roland. The songs help us see things from the character's point of view even if the songs already existed because the beauty of that is when they are used in the right moments! When Roland tries to get back with Marianne he sings 'C'mon Marianne' to which Marianne sings 'Stronger' by Kelly Clarkson because it is to prove to Roland she is no longer taking his lies. So you can understand why it angers me that people hate that the movie has too much singing and not enough talking! I apologize if this annoys anyone or Birdman, I just needed to get it off my chest and show that there are more people out there who are as stupid as Jeremy.
So your talk about "-phobic" terms got me thinking. I do agree that the word misogyny makes a lot more sense than the rest. My initial thought was "-ogony" but then I looked up the etymology and learned the miso part is the hateful part. In my opinion, misofat/misotrans/misohomo sound just ... weird. So I thought let's go full Greek on the words. Misopachys sounds like a much more effective shaming method than fatphobic. Following this same pattern, (please note I just used Google Translate so take all of this with a mountain of salt) I'd guess the most accurate for transphobic would be misoperan, and homophobic misomofylofilos. If someone happens to know Greek, please let me know how far off these guesses would be, and especially if there's a shorter way to say that last one, because I do honestly feel like TBM has a point. Thanks for getting me to at least attempt to learn something!
The memories of watching this movie as a kid with my family… I practically grew up on Adam Sandler movies, and I’m really not afraid to admit that I love a whole lot of them. What do you think about Mr. Deeds and or Big Daddy?
Considering I started on Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, Deeds as interesting since he didn't have the usual temper Adam's characters always seemed to have. He was just a genuinely nice dude.
Generally speaking, I like or love most of Adam's filmography. Punch Drunk Love is a certified classic. Big Daddy still can make me cry to this day. Mr. Deeds will always be goated just for that singing of Ground Control on the helicopter lmao So Adam is my guy. 50 First Dates is probably my favorite movie by him though.
You like his movies?! (Not that it's a bad thing but we can all agree everything went downhill after Little Nicky and didn't peak again until Uncut Gems)
I love this movie so much, and I'll never understand why people think it's gross. I'd kill for someone who loved me enough to do what they all do for Lucy, not just her family but her friends too They could have just sent her to the mental institution or any number of things, but chose to make the best of it for her sake.
Haha I'm glad someone called out cinema sins and that thong joke had me in stitches but that thing about toothpaste and British....Wow man that wounded me 😟
I've had moments where I've woken up, thinking things that were in my dream were happening in real life, with it taking several seconds for my brain to catch up. And there was one time when my alarm clock was going off, my 3/4-asleep self decided instead of hitting one of the buttons on the top, it'd be a better idea to open the back and take the batteries out to make it shut up XD I had to reset the time and date; it also has a thermometer that I forgot to set back to F from C, but I decided it didn't really matter. I think the only Adam Sandler movie I've seen (at least 90% of, when it's on TV) is Waterboy. If CS sins that movie, and you've seen and/or enjoyed it as well, I implore you to tell him why he's wrong about it XD
This film was a peak example of CinemaSins’ contempt and jealousy for creators who produce work that genuinely moves people. CS cynically shits on movies because, as you note, they lack imagination and also will never create anything as meaningful to people as this film.
as a former player/bachelor in my teens and young adult life, henry having lots of cleaning and hygene supplies is common for men like that... seeing how henry only dates tourists who will leave and he'll never see again ,he wants to make sure his hygene is on lock, and him lying about what he does is also spot on aka "first impressions" dating concept.. but jeremy never was nor could be a player or bachelor so that explains why he sinned that part
That was a really good romantic comedy film. I typically don't like them too much but her mental illness and memory loss helped me feel a sense of attachment to her. I have Autism and I have been put in positions to see things in this "perfect little bubble", where I don't question stuff. It took my first true, genuine friend to break me from such a thing. Funny enough we did date (three times), spent a few years apart and then became incredibly close friends again. Point is, I have this strong sense of connection to her in the film and the lengths he went to try and help her cope with the earth shattering revelations are heartwarming and emotional. The fact Jeremy thinks it's appropriate to make jokes and throw stupid situations at a woman who's literally in a time loop, who needs support, is apparently supposed to come to the reality that she doesn't remember anything past a certain point and has breaks in her psyche because of these revelations should be treated as someone who's normal and fully cognitively functional... is quite stupid and disrespectful. But whatever, first time I watched this film and it's good, probably one of, if not the "best", romantic comedy that creates genuine emotional bonds that also conveys such messages to us the audience
hope you don't mind if I vent too. I am high-functioning but never was tested til like 26 so I hear it's called masking, most just thought I was weird or "not normal". Personally I still feel those "perfect bubble" moments but idk if that's a me thing or a bit of optimism? I too liked this movie and agree 10 billion with percent( Dr. Stone reference lol). Sadly there are Jeremy's who will make out of context jokes but oh well. I'd much rather have my moments of oblivious optimism than be all "man this movie isn't realistic to memory stuff, clearly didn't do there research, etc and rather if a movie make me feel I fee;. Hope this made some sense as I tend to ramble but like to share when I see someone mentioning there Autism.
@@simpleguy86 it's completely fine. I was diagnosed when I was... eight or nine? I was diagnosed first with ADHD then Asperger's Syndrome. Mum always did say there was something "different" about me. Though I was her first child so hard to tell. When I was a child, a social worker (abusive "father") defined it as "their brain is wired differently". Hopefully that doesn't seem offensive either, but I believe it's the easiest way to describe Autism or ASD. Coping mechanisms are sometimes the only thing that keeps me calm and mentally in check. Like for example, the stuff with Ukraine/ Russia has been messing with that. Because I'm constantly thinking about it and how terrible some (Putin) can be. It messes with me because I, someone who is """stupid""" (what the bullies used to say), is more compassionate, empathetic and kind than someone running a country. But I digress, the whole idea of a safe bubble is just what people with needs sometimes need. I get "jokes" can reference a lot of things, but mental health is just one of those rare things that shouldn't be made fun of. Like I sometimes want some personal space from others, if Jeremy had it his way, I would be required to be close to others so that "I can get used to it". Seems like we both ramble on it seems 😅
the movie does hit a ridiculous spot like how he has to remind her every day about their love. Other than that this film is definitely, one of the best rom com films I've ever seen.
I'm with you Birdman. I actually love this movie, guilty pleasure or not. It's a solid rom com even to this day, one of the few that are actually really good.
Man I loved this movie back in the day. Also I didn't know theaters were barely in Hawaii. Imagine this same scenario where movie theaters where prominent. The sheer shock if seeing a movie poster for something releasing in 2020 when your last memory is of like 2000.
Yeah it was really weird. I saw Dune out there, and I was only able to find 2 theaters near Honolulu (there are more than 2, to be clear) showing the movie. The theater I went to was straight out of a zombie movie: damned near completely deserted. Hawaii takes its quarantine/COVID policies dead serious, far more than in California where I live.
@@Th3Birdman its always annoying how jeremy is "woke" but doesnt understand and is willfully ignorant to other cultures other than american... in hawaii (my grandma being half hawaiian/half white/half black) love spam , they literally put pigs, squid , octopi ,sweet potatoes, coconuts, seaweed and /or pinapples in every meal and reese cups is a very common thing in hawaii , theyre one of the first peoples to mix salty and sugary together in meals.. my favorite meals by my dad's side of family (due to my grandma/dad's mom) is laulau and poi which my mom still makes...definately try it sometime :D
@@Th3Birdman There are about a dozen on Oahu operated by Consolidated a local company or Regal the national chain. if you saw a movie in Honolulu itself and it was empty you most likely went to Regal Dole Cannery as they are usually empty. But people were really hesitant to go to movies at all so maybe Ward? Anyway glad you seemed to enjoy your trip. Also- even though I've lived my entire life here in Hawaii I have never had a drink out of a pineapple.
@@Komainu959 Yup! Cannery. That's crazy that they're always empty... And I got my pineapple drink near North Shore. It was a hole in the wall spot, served out of food trucks. I can't remember the name for the life of me.
I was young when I saw this movie and even then I found it really romantic. It's worrying that CINEMAsins are outright refusing to pay attention to movies and dumb people buying they're a movie criticism channel and don't watch the movies...
The reason everything is suffixed with phobia is because homophopia came first and it originally meant "fear of being assumed to be gay" before eventually becoming "against gay people" thus transphobia, biphobia, fatphobia was born
I think the reasoning is the suffix "phobia" comes from the greek word "phobos", and attaching an english word like "fat" with "phobia" sounds extremely weird. Fear of spiders is not "spiderphobia" it's "arachnophobia", fear of water is not "waterphobia" it's "aquaphobia" and rejection of foreigners is not "foreignphobia" it's "xenophobia"
@Deadland Placebo Today I found out... The More You Know... I never knew that origin.... And I do like to know and understand the Origin of words... Thank you for that insight! And @Renaldy Calixte "Phobia" comes from the Latin Phobos... And so do the prefixes... Hence, Fear of Water is Aquaphobia... Aqua is derived from Latin, Arachnophobia... Again Arachno is derived from Latin... Which makes things such as "Fat Phobia" and "Islamaphobia" sound made up... While they can be and I would even dare to say in some respects are real issues - The words themselves are very derivative. Something such as "Islamaphobia" should have a Prefix more akin to Religious Intolerance GENERAL... I obviously do not know Latin so I cannot provide the correct Prefix - But it is a great example of words being "Co-Opted" without full understanding. It does nto mean such an issue does not exist, but it actually damages teh importance of the word "Phobia" when it can be attached to ANYTHING! Great Example... I am Agnostic... I believe in god but follow no mainstream Religion - I could accuse Christians of being "Paganphobic" - It is a totally made up word using Modern Analogies and descriptions... And harms the "Phobia" part of the word. I do believe we should stop abusing the Phobia Suffix! Put Simply - You criticism is SPOT ON!
@@Phoenix2312 just a small correction, but those words are Greek, not Latin. Phobos was the Greek personification of fear, his Roman equivalent was Timor
It’s always a good day whenever Th3birdman decided he’s gonna pick on Jeremy again and preparing himself for all the BS he’s gonna get from cinemasins fan boys lol 😂
12.42: also many people who work with them tell you not to keep correcting people with dementia over every little thing when you don't need to because it makes them aware of their illness and/or can cause a lot of distress. Lucy's family have been put in an impossible situation and I feel for them. They have a choice of keeping this secret from their beloved sister and daughter and living a mind numbingly monotonous existence that they cannot escape from or spending every day breaking her heart by telling her she will never to the best knowledge of her doctors be able to create new memories.
Exactly! Everyday shed spend the first half having a breakdown and the second half trying to come to terms with it. Her life would be hell. I personally found the end to be kinda horrible. Imagine waking up pregnant like some SciFi/horror movie, only to learn once you have said kid, you won't remember your own child. You'll never remember their first steps or words, you'll have 24 hours to go know them before forgetting them again. I don't know, I just find that horrifying.
@@bloodyneptune is it not equally horrifying to spend your whole life living the same day over and over, until suddenly you're waking up with grey hair? What happens when her dad dies, will her brother then have to pretend for the rest of his life that their dad is on a trip somewhere? Would you rather have to adjust to a reality where you've become pregnant and had a child, or would you rather live in a manufactured stasis where you'll never have that experience? If I had a choice, I personally would much rather wake up tomorrow as an old man who's experienced a lot of things I don't remember than an old man who's unknowingly been experiencing the same exact thing every day since my 20s. I also really don't like the idea of my family burdening themselves with maintaining that illusion for my sake. I think what happens in the ending is the closest thing to a normal life she could have.
I have talk to Jeremy on Twitter, and he's a very nice guy. Although I would love the see sins Video on The Godfather that was made but shown on youtube yet, and for Birdman to do his video on that. LOL! Stay safe Myles.
I don't even watch cinema sins anymore, but these are awesome. Always nice to see someone vehemently stick up for a quality Adam Sandler movie. There's way more of those than people give credit for. Great vid man 👍🏻 Also...drew Barrymore 🤤🤤🤤
@@thelaughingrouge yea drew barrymore is sexy and shes one of the few actresses that is willing to do crude humor that is funny, you should watch her spoof for scream on her channel its very funny
I’m not a big Adam Sandler fan but this is one of the ones I really liked! And I’m a CMA (certified medication aid which means I have my CNA and medication aid certification.) and in all of our training in dealing with Dementia and other mental health issues (like hers) we are explicitly told not to challenge their reality but to join them in it. (Like those around her were doing for her) The reason why is it can cause them great distress and even cause them to be hostile and even attack others.
This is one of my favorite movies and one of the examples I use of Adem Sandle being a decent actor, not great but not terrible. The fact they avoided the cliche of "love conquers all" by having her some how overcome her condition because of love was so great. She had hints of it sure but she is in no way recovered and has to live with the condition for the rest of her life.
Henry isn't the one who is chasing girls just to bang them. Ulla outright says "this way I can imagine I did it and can get through another weekend". Henry only goes along with it so Ulla will leave him alone on the topic of romance and sex. Henry's real problem is he's afraid of being left and cheated on so he doesn't let himself make a long term commitment to protect himself from heartbreak. Henry is trying to get to know Lucy slow and steady LIKE YOU SHOULD but her braindamge gets in the way. So he tries to come up with ways to see her and get to know her. He even points out how sucky it is to keep lying to her by both him and her family so he helps by being honest and upfront with her. So suck that cinemasinns
@@Th3Birdman Trailer: "Another nice, Adam Sandler comedy. Like slow motion boob bouncing and farting in his boss's mouth." Movie: "The soul crushing despair as you realize you've alienated everyone you love, missed your children growing up, and never even attended your father's funeral."
Ive slowly been disliking CinemaSins more and more since I found your channel a couple of years ago. But my god the lengths they went to, to insult this masterpiece of a movie is pathetic and Im so glad you defended it with such vigor.
@@Th3Birdman To quote Morgan Freeman: "You don't have a phobia. You're just an asshole." And yeah, in science, a "Theory" is just below a "Law". Hunch -> Guess -> Hypothesis -> Theory -> Law iirc
@@Th3Birdman I’m just pointing out here that people aren’t necessarily wrong if they do use it as a suffix to mean a hatred or aversion to something, as language also changes all the time and is constantly evolving. Plus, one could argue that hatred is born of fear, which is born of ignorance. I hate spiders. I hate spiders because I am afraid of them. If you hate someone for bigoted reasons, I would argue that comes from an innate fear of people who are different.
@@samuelbarber6177 Oh forgive me, I must have come across as if I'm speaking AT you instead of TO you. I am not debating, just clarifying something. And yes, your point is well taken, that words evolve over time. I just think certain words should have concrete definitions and extrapolations, otherwise everything is subject to change, and that makes things meaningless in the long run. I was an English major so this is a particular pet peeve I have.
I was fully expecting you to sin them for the movie saying a College GF joke and them sinning it in the context that they did at 7:56 because the reason they sinned him is the basis of a lot of there own college GF "Jokes"
That's why I don't watch cinamsins. He contradicts himself too much. Rather it's intentional for the video or not, or rather he's trying to be funny. Points out the weirdest things trying to make it a deal. And overall, dude just isn't funny. Thank you my guy for your channel.
God, Jeremy trying to be woke and going on needlessly long tangents are some of the worse things with modern Cinemasins. I am glad I unsubbed before it got to this point in his career. He's more obvious with his video padding than Game Theory.
Channel Idea: EWW CS is definitely gold but requires effort on their part. I think, if you're interested in comic stories, your narration and commentary on events unfolding would draw plenty of views. Current first place, imo, comic channel would be Comics Explained, but having a different opinion/input on the stories would have appeal. As well, that channel bounces around with stories often, if you were to follow the same route and power through each story before covering the next it'd add a different 'style' in how you release content. Just an idea, I'd listen in.
If I die before Jeremy does, I would like to become a ghost and follow him around for like a year, doing all the shit to him he does to movies. He's walking around his house, I criticize how many lamps he has, or that his coffee maker is too close to the toaster. He starts having a conversation, I randomly pop out and go "SKIP!" or I interrupt what he's saying with an irrelevant reference to some random movie. Some days I'd just point out stuff around him and make dinging sounds.
Recent subscriber, love your content. I still watch Cinema Sins but find myself watching their videos more objectively and disagreeing with certain points. Really just commenting to say I love the Devil May Cry reference you dropped, if I had less or more chromosomes than normal I'd say "tell me you're cool without telling me you're cool".
I remember the first time I ever heard about this movie was an old rant by a famous vlogger, who said that he didn't think the ending made any sense... I guess not realizing that this is a real condition and that is the real treatment. Maybe he meant that it didn't make sense to frame it as a happy ending, which is _arguably_ more reasonable, but still something I would consider problematic. Also, there was a Mental Floss video that at one point addressed the tendency of Hollywood movies to exclusively depict retrograde amnesia and not acknowledge anterograde amnesia... and they cited this movie as one of several examples. Clearly whoever wrote that video just Googled "movies about amnesia" and didn't check to make sure that all of them were appropriate examples.
The good part of watching Everything Wrong With CinemaSins videos... The Birdman The bad part of watching Everything Wrong With CinemaSins videos... I still have to listen to Jeremy and it's painful.
Henry is shown to lie to one of the woman he dates, that's the problem, I haven't seen the original Cinema Sins video, but if Jeremy didn't bring that up as the problem, then he sucks at making his point
