@@christianprince4508 Amazing how an omnipotent creater of the universe could only write a book so vague that only schoalers can understand, the only thing people need to understand about that book is that its entirely fabricated from human imagination from the very first letter to the very last period! Pure myths, and not even well written myths at that!
@@christianprince4508 I was raised in the church, I know those verses. I don’t know what your point is, I lost my faith after trying to seek if my church was really true so I could teach others. Not a distortion of the gospel that made me stop believing, I just happened to enjoy this series bringing a new perspective to the words I was raised on.
@@christianprince4508 sorry I wrote a response a few days ago but apparently the comment didn’t get posted. I was not Catholic I was from the Church of Christ. No other denomination name, just church of Christ. I was saved and baptized when I was thirteen. I read my Bible every day and was very immersed in Christianity. I truly believed and did everything I could to follow the Bible. But there came a point when I had to address the fact that I had friends who despite not being bad people were under my belief going to hell. I thought I needed to look into my religion more; if it was true maybe I could find something to convince them. I learned about the history of Christianity and myths that it appears to have copied. I learned about the history of the Bible itself and how the dates of the copies we have make it unreliable. I learned about history and context of verses like the ritual in the Old Testament for knowing if your wife was cheating (spoiler it’s forced abortion) and how the beliefs and traditions changed over time. I learned about science and how everything I’d heard from people like Don Patton who came to my church were wrong. I learned about the problem of evil and other logical arguments. I wasn’t Catholic, and maybe I don’t fit your preconceived notions of an athiest but I truly believed and sought out God yet I couldn’t find him. As far as Catholics being atheists: my boyfriend is Catholic. Catholics believe in a god, therefore are theists. If you want to gatekeep the definition of Christianity I’m not gonna stop you but it seems dumb.
@@christianprince4508 So we should all just take Paul's word for it and be satisfied with it? If Jesus can show up for Paul, he can show up for me. Heck if Yahweh wants to show up, I will even have a wrestling match with him and risk a broken hip, just like Jizrael.
‘...and a death bed monologue that’s probably still going on.” Thanks for making me spit out my coffee as I laughed, Hemant! Cheers & HNY, Kenny from Philly
I wonder how the brothers reacted to the "blessings"? To Judah and Joseph he said nice things. But to some of the others he basically told them they are scum and will have horrible lives. I am sure that went over well. I could see some of them going back and pissing on their Dad's grave. Why are so many people in the Bible jerks?
If you think about it it's actually worse than just him insulting them. He's determining who gets the most territory and what their children will be like, so entire tribes' lives are being determined by their ancestor's opinion of his sons.
3:41 Is it me who feels so bad for Ruben who genuinely tried to help Joseph, but got cursed by Israel who loved Joseph and JUDAH, the kid who proposed to sell Joseph into slavery, gets rewarded? That is messed up karma
In the original Hebrew the blessings are written in very archaic language compared to the rest of Genesis. Which means that the translation of most of the passages isn't certain, and that these blessing probably originated somewhere else and have little to do with the current version of Genesis. That's why it sounds like nonsense.
I have been told that Yahweh speaks in King James English and directly guided the KJV translators into the perfect essence of his meaning. At least that is what I have been told.
@@davidez4640 "Heaven forbid" that we have found other older texts or learned more about the ancient languages than people from 610 years ago. I try not to get involved in discussions about Bible translations. No matter which version you pick, the stories are obviously all works of fiction about events that didn’t actually happen. No argument is changed or invalidated because you pick one over the other. The stories at their very core are clearly not true. Actually the Masoretic Text from the 10th Century CE that the KJV used for the OT has quite a lot of differences from older sources.
@@oscargordon eh, you're giving me a serious answer? I was just making a silly joke. Anyway ood course they are different variations of fictional events and as an atheist i don't give them any spiritual importance, from an historical perspective however it's interesting to analyse the different versions and try to figure what is the most ancient and more "correct" version
@@davidez4640 I too enjoy learning about ancient cultures, both their myths, and what archaeology shows their lives to be actually like. For your edification, a brief description I wrote a while back about the history of the Bible texts, a people inventing a back story of a glorious and exciting past who were in reality minor nobodies in the region that nobody paid any attention to. 1. Some people wrote some stuff down while the Neo-Babylonians controlled the area in the 6th century BCE. We have nothing from the 6th and 5th century BCE so nobody knows what they originally wrote. 2. People in the 4th and 3rd century BCE stored some of the stories in the Qumran Caves, a complete Isaiah and some bits and pieces of other stories. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Sea_Scrolls 3. Also during 3rd and 2nd century BCE the stories were translated into Greek since that was the common language of the time, called the Septuagint or LXX. The oldest existing copies are from 4th century CE, or 700 years later. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septuagint 4. During the 2nd century BCE the stories were translated into Samaritan. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samaritan_Pentateuch 5. During the 2nd century CE the stories were translated in Syriac. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peshitta 6. In the late 4th century CE a translation from several different sources was made in to Latin by Jerome and others, and revised on several occasions by the Catholic Church. The Hebrew version that Jerome worked from has since been lost. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulgate 7. During the 7th to 10th century CE Jewish Masoretes created a version in Hebrew with vocalization and accent marks since earlier Hebrew text did not include them. The sources they worked from are unknown. The oldest copy is from the 10th century CE. 8. In the 16th century CE Erasmus made the Textus Receptus, the first published version of the NT in Greek, from various sources. 9. In the 17th century CE, the Church of England made the KJV translation working from the Hebrew Masoretic Text, the Latin Vulgate, and the Textus Receptus. A chart of the different versions and there sources. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_Bible#/media/File:Texts_of_the_OT.svg And of course all of these have been copied, revised, and retranslated over and over again. By the ends of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles describing the occupation of the area by the Neo-Babylonians, you are probably getting the names of actual local rulers and events, everything else is pure fantasy.
Crazy story, but you make it far more interesting than it is. Happy New Year to you, looking forward to the next chapter and wondering what happened to Dinah?
I feel bad for the Brothers that got Cursed. I especially feel bad for the Brothers whose Anger got Cursed. They just didn't want thier sister getting Skewered by some random guy. And the foreskin strat was Tactically sound. Gave them an Advantage in combat.
When you read out the part about Reuben having gone "up unto [his] father's bed, onto [his] couch and defiled it", I immediately thought of Rick James stomping his muddy boots on Eddie Murphy's couch in that Dave Chappelle sketch. The actual sexual meaning didn't even cross my mind. Guess I'm too pure to be reading the Bible.
You raise a bunch of good points on this Genesis series-I've made some of the same observations. (I would respond, but frankly don't know where to start.) The problem with judgment is people let off steam to all but the interested party.. Why not challenge the one who should have the answers-God himself? Works for me.
Thank for doing this. You ask questions about the Bible which need to be asked. I’m looking forward to exodus. The story of Moses is one I was taught growing up. I’d love to see your take on it. I personally would never ask you to do the whole Bible. It’s too long and too boring. Maybe after exodus, skip to the gospels.
I was expecting the fake-out where you *think* he croaks, but then shocks everybody with a gasp and just keeps talking. That's the best part of melodramatic deaths. "Gasp, gasp...... WHEEZE...... blah, blah, blah.............................." 😔 "WHEEEEEEEZE....." 😲 "Gasp, gasp.... blah, blah, blah, blah..." 🤦♂️
@@liamwilbur1897 My favorite example of that kind of thing is Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. I just keep picturing Isreal as the old master and Joseph as the chosen one.
This was written by people working for the kingdom of Judah, of course it's going to show their legendary ancestor be praised. Judah is the son of the senior wife who doesn't get disinhereted for behavior, so he's the legitimate heir. A lot of Jacob's ranting makes sense if he's talking about the "tribes" and not their legendary ancestors. Presumably these are the opinions the writers hold or want to propagate.
My friend you are very studious and yet you have not yet learned this TRUTH. EVERYONE believes in a God in one form or another ... A grand architect a creator whether you believe that it's you ..yourself or even a higher power. But what you have not learned is that there is one God , His form revealed His power manifest for all with faith. We who know this are Christians ... Borne of the Spirit ... and not my words but true netherless... THERES NO FREE RIDE .and if you are not willing to give to GOD that what's required to receive this Eternal life then like all who want a free entry will not enter... Proof of what I say is confirmed by everyone that has had a Moment.. Clue is in the last line second verse of Amazing Grace ... The hour I first believed......
This reminds me of some TV soap opera on people’s everyday lives. There is nothing spiritual in any characteristics, sayings or actions in any of these so called prophets. Blessings given randomly without any reference to what made people worthy or unworthy. The entire blessing business therefore becomes highly suspect particularly when these can only be given once and hold even if given inadvertently to someone you never meant to. God himself becomes implicit in these random events. There is no notion of Karmic, getting fruits of your actions at play. Years ago, I had read the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and though having great respect and admiration for Tolkien as a writer attempting to make a world with it’s own language, the interweaving of characters such as Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, nature spirits etc decided it actually to not lead to much more than entertainment. No wonder it had been movified. I then decided to have a go at reading the Bible. I had a Jehovahs witness version. I could never understand why these people or prophets had been chosen by God what special features they had that god valued or we can learn from. Also, why meeting with god seemed to be treated as a totally meaningless event to his people. Why had god chosen them? They seemed to be constantly stuck in a rut of the same cycle. Doing some wrong, getting punished, making some truce pact with god, then repeating the whole damn thing over and over again. Someone was obviously not learning, either the chosen people or god himself. I thought, if I had met with God, how it would absolutely change my perception, thoughts, insecurities, behaviour and actions towards others. In the Bible however meeting with god was an ‘Oh yeah? Whatever! Can you leave us alone ALREADY!’ Attitude. My Bible was well annotated, I got up to kings, then life events meant I had to place my attention towards other more pressing things. Therefore, it’s great to hear you discussing this text chapter by chapter!!! Love it!! I had read annotated versions of Mahabharata, Gita and Ramayana and am very familiar with Upanishads, Vedanta and thought about how much more I appreciated the psychological and spiritual insights of those texts. The spiritual traditions of India seemed at total loggerheads with the imperialistic offerings of God in Bible and Koran. Recently I watched an upload on Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi the Hindu enlightened Master. It placed a great counterpoint on what is deemed to be spiritually acceptable to the God of the Bible and it’s writers and to the God-free insights of Hindus. Also I had watched a rendition of Mahabharata. If anyone is interested just say and I’ll post the links here. I’m not here to promote Hinduism, it’s not my point, but it is good to see the spiritual endeavors of those berated, ignored and unspoken of such as Australian Dadiri, Mbuntu, Kahuna, Amerindian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Taoist, Shinto, Sikh, Swedenborg etc I’m interested in experiential insights than in my truth is the only truth sales and mass-marketing.
Funny video, but it also shows how modern readers struggle to know how to read the Bible. It's the same reason Christians built an ark replica trying to debate people into believing in a literal understanding. His speech sets up the rest of the story of Israel. Just like every other chapter in Genesis.
Geez, really? Took him long enough, honestly. When exactly is he coming back? And who are we even talking about? Friendly Atheist will be back for other videos eventually, if that's who you're talking about.
I wonder if anyone noticed that Jacob (or Israel) wanted to be buried near his least favorite wife he didn't want in the first place and the one he wanted was buried elsewhere.
