Everything Wrong With The Last of Us S1E1 - "When You're Lost in the Darkness"

You know it's a good show when there are only like 2 sins that are *actual* tv sins

Never played the games, so I don’t know if the spread happened from eating flour, but I LOVE the setup that Joel and his family didn’t eat any flour the day of the outbreak - no pancake mix, forgot the cake, doing Atkins…so good without being in your face about it

I mean, Joel shows up with Tommy in a panic because they've seen the infected - heavily implied that they were at the jail where Tommy was. Joel uses what he can find in his work truck, and they arrive with a plan to escape. He has the weapon out because he knows that the neighbors are a danger to Sarah and he has to get her out, not because he knows which neighbor in particular is a threat.

I was expecting the “news story exposition”; but the lack of sin is appropriate as this opening has to be one of the most effective expositions ever 👏

School scene is needed because of the twitching guy. It shows moments before the disaster.

I love that this show fleshed out its characters more, namely Sarah, Frank and Bill. Even though we know that it won't end well for any of them, we still feel a connection towards them.

That 20 year time-skip is part of what makes TLOU such a fresh take on the zombie genre. It's manages to mix aesthetic and flow of a post-apocalyptic story while still keeping the action and tension of the zombie genre. You take out that time skip and we're just watching Dawn of the Dead again.

The reason they mentioned the date "September 26th" is because it's "Outbreak Day" aka the day the first game was originally released so also when the infection spread to such world wide catastrophe.

Going back and seeing them avoid eating anything with flour in the first episode is a really cool detail.

Three sin removal isn't excessive to me. The more sin removals, the better.

Now that's a yikes from me. You said Joel hadn't left the house. The whole reason he pulled up in the truck was to get Tommy outta jail cuz he was in a bar fight... caused by an infected person... so they knew to be armed...

He obviously knows about the outbreak or at least that people are hurting each other, so i think sin 33 shouldn't be there since he would have the sense to carry around a weapon when not in the vehicle.

Ok the wrench thing, Joel was clearly aware some kinda shit was popping off. He came out of the truck HOT. YOu don't think he's gonna grab a weapon to make his way to his daughter?

What I love is that even when they changed how the virus caused mass panic it's still scientifically accurate. In the game: Hospitals began dealing with people who have violent coughs that send out spores. The patients would infect other patients who would then infect their nurses and doctoral staff by biting and other. Anyone who had been in the city or in the hospitals in the area were most likely exposed. Causing things to break down quickly considering people were flooding into the hospitals and then people leaving hospitals without realizing they are already infected. We know the hospitals were the hot spots and epicenters from the Last of Us Part 2 when we see a very big old nasty infected organism come from the hospital. In the show: due to the fact that there was an agreement of no gas masks because of the guys from Chernobyl coming and working on the film they turned to using grain. Grain is in everyday food and grain is known to be a good substrate for fungi and mold so much so that the FDA has a regulated limit. This explains how things went downhill fast. Texas is a southern state and prides on its' southern foods (biscuits and gravy (both made from grain products), waffles etc.) and many other American items. The fungus was able to get into the grain supply and from there it spread. Anyone who ate contaminated grain products turned within the day. This is why we see Joel and Tess look a little shocked to find that Ellie was eating a full on sandwich (Fun Fact: Ellie is not technically immune (confirmed by the game) because her immunosuppression meds carried a form of Cordyceps family fungus (source is from Film Theory)). Notice how in the first episode that Joel and Sarah conveniently have no grain products to eat from no pancake mix, didn't eat the biscuits, no cookies, no cake, etc. This would explain how their society went from a typical Friday morning to hell in a span of over 12hrs. This in my opinion made it so much more interesting because the fact that they used their research to build a really good plot point is way better. So far best videogame to show adaptation to date.

I love that you think that the military is there to protect the people. I get the sense that the military was there to stop the spread of the unknown contagion. By any means necessary.

The callbacks to Fringe and Mindhunter are much appreciated. And I had no idea Anna Torv was in this show until like two weeks ago, but I was literally thinking before starting this show that she really isn't in enough things.

There are four ways that Joel and Sarah almost get infected in this episode. Joel forgot to get pancake mix. When leaving the neighbor offered biscuits. At the same neighbor's Sarah got offered raisin cookies and when Joel got home he forgot to get a cake. All those ways they missed getting infected mainly because of laziness and being grossed out by sloppy eating and raisin cookies.

That one Pet Sematary clip awoke a deep sadness in me that I had already forgotten, thanks 👍

I would add a sin for calling the group fireflies. That reminds me of my childhood where I used to love watching fireflies in the backyard but now almost all fireflies dead and gone in the world

4:59 I’d just like to say for the record that I was genuinely fooled into thinking that Sarah would be the show’s main character, in fact the whole “ditzy dad” stereotype that Joel initially played into made me think that he was the character who would get axed off to establish the threat and that Sarah largely looking after herself was meant to foreshadow that she’d have to look after herself permanently after losing her dad.

I've have never played the game Or watched any gameplay off The Last of Us. When I was watching it I was totally blind about what was supposed to happen. the only thing I knew is that he was a zombie show that they had fungus and that there was a guy and a girl , So I assumed that the guy was pedro and a girl was his daughter and I was so f****** wrong, God I literally said when i was watching the episode when I was "What am I worried about I mean, they're not going to kill her in the first episode" ...
