It makes sense in only one context, you want to do it to a classic car. I don't know how it's called in America, and there isn't such a big scene doing it there, but where I live is very popular to take a old 70-80 car as a project and retrofit it with all kinds of stuff like abs, traction control, awd, power steering, Ecu... etc. You like don't have the option to just buy a awd similar model if doing this kind of costum project, it just doesn't exist.

@@rajr249 ABS stays the same, but adaptation in central convenience tells the rest of the car that Haldex controller is present. Anyways I wrecked my car and got a GTI but one of the guys with the hybrid swap in his GLI has gone on to doing an AWD swap and he's just about done with it. As I understand it the 3rd gen Haldex went into a few Volvo models, V8 and some T6 XC90s as well as the V8 S80. Fun fact, Volvo went hard on gen 2 Haldex used it in a bunch of mid 2000's models, S40, V50, S60, V70, etc. As far as I know gen2 and gen3 are mechanically identical. The controller software is different, but parts are swap-able. I know all of this because I'm AWD swapping a C30(it's a thing, you can find out about it on the internet). I will take a look at my Gen2/3 hybrid and see how similar they are to the VW stuff you shared. I'm curious to know if VW haldex controllers work on the Volvo units.

I converted a 1.8T B5 Passat to RWD using an E46 BMW 320d rear end and a Ford Sierra Type 9 Gearbox.. It required me to cut the rear floor pan and make 2 new mounts for the rear subframe but other than that it was stupidly easy and pretty cheap. The most expensive part of it all was getting a prop shaft made to length tbh.. all in, (that's the price of the Passat, including hybrid turbo, injectors and other supporting mods + all the parts for the RWD swap) it cost less than 5k for a unique 300hp RWD car. I've since sold the car but from what I've heard, it's still going strong.

Now hear me out… I’ve got a 1970s station wagon I’ve always wanted to engine swap, and over the years the idea has evolved into an AWD + engine swap. My thinking is just get an AWD donor car that’s already equipped with everything I need and do a body swap. Yes a body swap is a costly and timely undertaking on its own, but seems like the better option. I wanna hear your thoughts!

@alexlutz2221
@alexlutz2221 Год назад
@@clamencoclamenco7079 actually haven't gotten a chance to finish it yet and it's been sitting with all the fabrication pretty much done just needing the engine and transmission reinstalled, wiring harness hooked up and a little bit of plumbing done but I haven't had the time to work on it as I've had a lot of things thrown on my plate in the last year or so that had a higher priority than the rabbit. That said the first thing I would suggest is making sure you get a donor car not just the transmission, diff ECT. This way you can save yourself the headache of trying to get everything lined up perfectly. If I were to do it again I would strip the donor car down completely to the chassis. From there I would get tube steel square, round tube doesn't really matter. Whatever random stock you can get for cheap should work. Make yourself a jig that will bolt up perfectly to every subframe mounting point by bolting on mock up brackets being sure to have the bolt holes as perfectly lined up as possible and welding braces between all the mock up brackets on both the front and rear subframes and between the two and up to the strut mounting points. I would also suggest doing this for any other brackets that you intend on transferring to the final car. Make sure your jig is rigid and lines up perfectly and is level to the floor at a normal ride height so everything is at a consistent height from the ground as it was on the donor and that you have alignment reference points for the center of the car and a front to back alignment point prior to cutting into the donor at all. Once you have your jig at a point where you are happy it you can remove the jig then cut the mounting points off the donor. You can then support the chassis of the final car in such a way that it will drop over the jig with all the brackets you cut off the donor attached to it. if the wheelbase needs to be adjusted you can very carefully remove the exact same amount from both sides of your jig and reweld it together to reduce the wheelbase or cut and add material to increase the wheelbase.once the wheelbase looks good Lower the final car and cut parts off until it's sitting in a position that you are happy with. Then weld supports to hold all the brackets in place to the point where everything is rigidly held on to the final car but not necessarily complete. From there you can remove the jig and turn the car on it's side using a rotisserie made from scrap or a purchased one if you're feeling fancy or if you have a lift raise the car up to a comfortable work height. From those positions it becomes easy to start to patch in sheet metal to make the unibody whole again. Once everything is patched up you might want to verify with the jig that everything is in the right spot. If you are happy with it the body is ready to have the welds ground down and then painted or bedlinered or however you want to finish the undercarriage of the car to protect it. From here everything except for maybe the driveshaft should bolt right up as if it was stock. I did not do it this way as I did it all with measurements and it took 10 times longer than it should have and I had to redo it once to fix the alignment of the rear end. As for donor AWD selection I would suggest making sure the AWD transmission is compatible with the engine you want to use. For vws most 4cylinder engines share the same bolt pattern if I'm not mistaken and all vr6 engines share the bolt patterns. I think the 5cylinder is the same as the vr6 but don't quote me on that. For mine all I could find for cheap near me was a automatic 3.6l vr6 4motion Passat but I wanted the 1.8t engine for the lower overall weight and better weight distribution due to the mounting location and affordability, availability of Both replacement parts and upgrade parts. In order to make them work together I had to make a completely custom flex plate, flex plate spacer and adapter to physically bolt the engine and transmission together. These can be done if needed especially if you have access to a machine shop but you can save yourself a lot of time and money if you can find a setup that already works together. If you need harness diagrams you can buy them from erwin.vw or erwin.audi respectively depending on the donor you get and other parts you plan on using that are from other cars. This will also help you with any electrical you need to do that's aftermarket for instance a racing fuel cell, aftermarket fuel pump ECT to ensure everything is hooked up properly and sends the required information where it needs to go. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hey ! I'm thinking the other way, i've got a MKV R32 but i would like to remove the 4 motion (prop shaft, transfer case and rear case). The only wall i'm facing is coding the car to remove electronicaly the 4 motion ! Any ideas ? Thank you !

It says YOUR CAR, not YOUR VW. Anyway. Love the channel and have a 2004 Mitubishi Lancer wagon rusting away, for which an old dream of mine has been to install a 2,0TDI from a VW (Mitsus had 2,0 VW diesel engines in some cars, like the Grandis mini van) and make it AWD by using the bits from the same generation Outlander. Should all be easy, right? I mean, they had AWD in all gens of EVOS, and in Japan they even had wagon 8th gen EVOS. Anyway. If anyone has any insight, would be much appreciated. Well done for the RWD Golf GTI.

I have a 2014 Beetle TDi with the DSG transmission. I am currently mapping out a plan to lift it and turn it into an off roader. Are there any caveats you can think of to doing this conversion on my vehicle? Unfortunately the vast majority of information out there applies to the older "new beetles" and not to the 12-19 redesign.

I own a 2016 DSG beetle as well, not the diesel though, and i also happen to be planning your exact lift+awd swap in order to daily it in northern canada. Besides the huge caveat of time and cost? I think the main issue with awd swapping the a5 beetle is the wiring. There are pretty much no amateurs attempting this swap at all due to how difficult it would be to wire the haldex unit to behave like stock, and I dont think its appealing to very many people to leave everything up to a phone and standalone haldex controller. HPA motorsports have done two of these a5 awd swaps to my knowledge and they say that it takes an equivalent amount of time mechanically assembling the haldex, driveshaft, axles, etc. as it does to actually wire up the car. Something like 100 hours of building and then 100 extra man hours of straight wiring. Allegedly it is possible, though, to mount the rear haldex system into our car without doing much other than cutting out the spare tire well and installing brackets for the driveshaft. Everything from a mk5/6 golf r32 or audi tt mk2 should just bolt on to the a5 beetle with no problems but keep in mind I have not attempted this swap myself, just researched as much as i can about it. They all came off the same production line so my fingers are crossed I can just pick up a donor r32 for cheap and just frankenstein it all on. Probably also going to manual swap it as well using the donor car. Also I hear it's better to have the dune trim because the wiring harness is more accomodating.

I'm really wanting to do a similar thing but can't find anyone that's done my car before. It's a astra H vxr so don't really have many options to take parts from. Oh and it's running a saab b204 engine and a vauxhall combo diesel gearbox 😂

2 maybe 3 awd projects planned. Miata maybe with a Honda awd set up like civics for racing use keep the hp low ish like 350. More likely just a rwd engine swap. 2 deffs at some point awd plans. 4 door gtst to gtr conversion. Either with an rb30 block with 25 or 26 heads. Or a custom rb30 rb26 and 2jz hybrid from Australia. Or potentially a newer v6 style gtr or z platform engine. Upgraded awd system based off attessa but electronic and faster scanning and more programmable. 350z awd with a gtr style awd system but using some g35 bits. Gtr transmission and transfer case. G35 bits for the front suspension and hubs. Some stock 350z suspension bits. 350z engine but built. Maybe upgrade to an r35 engine. Widebody kit and extra rubber in the rear should help a bit with the added front weight. Since race car show car daily sports car. Eventually some custom or aftermarket suspension bits to reduce weight back to stock in the front. Weigh less than a skyline same awd system but now more programmable and can turn it off at will to rwd for drifting. Interior has to partially be re done but still looks factory so aftermarket bits can be used to make some of it easy. Since aftermarket gtr awd bits for sensors and computers and aftermarket ecus and other stuff. Means some reduced weight off the system and space. And reduced space off the stock ecu and wiring. Hide a mini car computer diy in it. Ssd storage and a connection to the ecu for tuning. Add in a sim card reader and attena and bam diy car wifi. Some of the stuff for the 350 also applies to the gtr conversion. Reduces weight increases performance and actually saves money long term on the conversion and build. Improves reliability. But both projects are gonna require so much build time and work. Basically instead of paying big money for certain oem gtr bits. You can spend similar sometimes less or only a little more for huge upgrades. Aftermarket billet transfer case and the aftermarket upgraded transmissions being examples. Though the lighter car means less stress starting with something 1000whp capable on an awd gtr means its done besides bear sets on the 350z. And should require less maintenance and servicing. Daily 4 door suoer car slayer family car. Lighter smaller more sporty looking 2 seater coupe super car slayer. Both at probably 800 to 1000whp for like 50k each or less depending. Skyline cost a bit more since I want it done right and might use some r35 bits. Can find a good clean manual 350z in buildable condition for 5k or less. Even expensive option with the 16-18k sequential or dct transmissions. Say 23k, billet transfer case I think was 3k. If I remember correctly the other attesa bits was like 2k for the upgraded one. The g35 bits not that expensive I'd say probably 5k at most. Body work 2 days so figure a couple grand at worst. Ecu couple grand for fancy one. All out engine and turbo. Like 10k on engine work 7k turbo set up Diy you could probably into it on all brand new bits for like 50k and be pumping pretty high horse power awd. Potentially less. One of the cheaper transmissions options. See about a stock transfer case from Nissan maybe a nismo upgraded one is available for less. But then you also have a bunch of spare bits to sell. And I'd you get one with the body work for a widebody already done cheap and or some turbo and engine work you might not need as much. If you can build the engine yourself and put together a cheaper turbo set up. If you can get the g35 bits cheaper than I guessed which is probably the case. Skyline starts where I live for a gtst for like 10k. Add like 30k for the engine from aussie but good for thousands of hp. Just need some turbos. Rest is very similar except a few more expensive gtr bits. And the necessary body work. But last I checked like 60 to 70k. Maybe more depending how fancy you go. Might be able to save a bit in some places. Lowest I figured the awd 350z conversion would be like 35k ish meaning potentially sub 40k. Lowest for the gtr like 55k ish. 350z more stock. Gtr still pretty custom and the closer you get to factory gtr for certain shit the more money. Especially if you want built factory gtr. Custom highly built gtr with a bunch of factory shit removed and new interior cheaper. For my gtr a little bit more given left hand drive conversion. But less than if I was trying to fully emulate the stock interior. The touch displays are dying and annoying to replace. So custom infotainment. But still inspired off the stock just modernized like a resto mod. Plus the 4 door Skyline perfect family car for the r34. Big car anyways why not take advantage of the 4 door life. Diy car computer also means easy to do diy headrest displays and other cool stuff. For the price of buying a gtr and building it to similar levels. I get something more custom. Just as fast or faster. More unique. And modernized everywhere almost. So show car race car daily car cause the gtr can be dailied when built right if you do regular maintenance which is reduced in cost my route. Plus a family car. 350z cheaper gtr that's a 2 seater and with the 350z body kits available you can make look very very sporty. Gtr kind of a sleeper. 350z a sleeper but in a completely different sense. And monsters are different to rwd monsters. Also means for the gtr I can build in a roll cage that's hidden super easy given it's a full rebuild. 350z leave alone to start. Extra strength and stiffness hidden so stock look except a few peekaboos and you can still have bolt in side bars for track days but cleaner and hidden mounts. And keeps passengers safer. Plus the 4 door body would have to be made stiffer for the doors. And the rear door front frame gives you a perfect spot to hide a side bar that runs vertical. Both side of the floor. Front pillars rear pillars frame between the front and rear doors covers roof sides floor and connects the whole chassis. Cause body work means paint. Do the bondo or body filler yourself properly. Thin down to bare metal as little as possible. Get a cheap maaco or similar paint job. Then polish and smooth out the paint yourself. Use as a cheap primer. Have nice final color coat and clear done on top but less work for the expensive painters to do. Because old gtst likely needs work you save some money going straight to conversion upgrades like lights as well. Upgraded straight to modern brighter leds. Any custom body kit stuff can also help versus getting high end stock body kit panels.

#shopdap #daprepair Hey guys! I love your channel AND I’ve been a VW driver for over 25 years (I’m 37). Currently we have a 2013 Tdi Sportwagen...and we live in the mountains in Canada. This is one of my favourite Dubs to date, with the only drawback being it’s FWD. If I wanted an AWD TDI Sportwagen would I be better off swapping a TDI engine into a existing AWD wagon, or convert mine to AWD? I have all tools and equipment needed to do either job, but haven’t done such a huge mod before...I would love the advice! Why am I stuck on the Sportwagen? Well...after having a Tiguan and Touareg, the wagon has more cargo room...which is killer since we do loads of road trips...so yeah. Keep up the good work! Thanks!!!

Well the main reason people awd swap their car is for more grip. If they have a lot of power and can’t put it down through their 2 wheels they just awd swap their car so they can grip more and be able to launch it.
