Born here, my parents moved us all over the country as they had wandering hearts, but back since the 80's. I find the high temps usually only last about an hour, usually late afternoon or early evening, then quickly drop. Very cold spells are usually only a week or two at most. We do once in awhile get a winter from hell, but compared to Edmonton, where I lived for two years, most years Calgary gets regular Chinook relief, and that can sometimes last a couple of weeks. We're lucky being near the mountains, Alberta is a naturally dry grassland area with frequent droughts, but Calgary always gets more rain than any other city outside of mountain towns like Banff and Canmore. We are built on a flood plain, however, and developers carelessly and greedily sold high priced homes in areas where there have been huge floods in the past (to be fair, people tend to have short memories and news treats every weather event as though it's a brand new phenomenon). Since the massive flood of 2013, there's better flood mitigation -- let's hope that continues -- and the neighbourhood in nearby High River, built very near a river (gee, wonder how the town got that name) that was completely destroyed is now a no build zone. Biggest problem right now is NIMBYISM, so Calgary keeps getting build out, esp on the Eastern side. More mixed housing would be a great step forward!

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your insights on Calgary's weather and the challenges the city has faced. It's always great to hear from someone who has a deep connection to the area. You're absolutely right about the unique weather patterns in Calgary, with those brief but intense temperature changes and the occasional "winter from hell." The Chinooks are indeed a blessing, providing some relief during the colder months. I appreciate your mention of the flood mitigation efforts since 2013. It's crucial to acknowledge the steps taken to address past issues and work towards a more resilient city. The changes in High River also highlight the importance of learning from past experiences. And yes, NIMBYISM can be a significant challenge when it comes to urban development. Striking a balance between growth and preserving the unique character of neighborhoods is crucial. Mixed housing is a great suggestion, promoting diversity and inclusivity in the community. If you have any specific questions about the real estate market in Calgary or if there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to ask! Whether you're a long-time resident or considering a move to Calgary, I'm here to help with any real estate-related information you may need.
