Another tip I've heard if you keep bumping your nail into the magnet, is to stick the other end to the metal lid of a candle (or anything metal of a similar height). That way the magnet stays in place and you just hold your finger under it rather than having to hold the wand yourself as well as keeping your nail still. If it's a small candle/magnet stand, you might even be able to leave your finger flat on the table and that way nothing is moving. That has helped me get a stronger cat eye line!
Tip! If you buy those big flat effect magnets from any vendor and it doesn’t work or look like the graphic, unwrap the tape and flip the magnet to the other side, then tape it back up. Test it on your polish bottle. These so commonly accidentally were assembled with the magnets flipped the wrong way and it really makes a difference! They can also get mislabeled and you have to switch the wrapping 😅
This is very cool.I'm loving this.I'm 63 years old and I love how far and imaginative nail polishes have gone in their own direction.Thank you so much for a great vidyo. You've gained a new watcher
Someone I follow on IG (I forget who) realized that you can do the velvet/aura effect if you put your finger in the middle of two magnets that are side by side.. if that makes sense. Like two magnetic wands with the rectangle sides next to each other (not stacked) and then you put your finger over the place where the two wands are touching. That's become my favorite way to do the velvet style! For cat eye, I stick my wand/magnet on my desk lamp and slide my finger underneath so I make sure I don't bonk the polish (like the KB Shimmer stand, but it's just my lamp lol). I'm not a French tip kind of person, but I've seen people use the round side of a magnetic wand to push the shimmer to the edge of their nail in a French-ish style. Another way to do cool stuff with magnetics is to put the magnet under a nail art mat, paint the polish on, let it dry, and do what you want with the decal. For your fun fact question, I'm 100% a texter but I use lots of emojis to make sure my tone is obvious. I express myself so much more easily via writing than speaking, especially phone conversations!
great video!! something i have seen people also doing with the round magnet (at 11:50) is going from the bottom of the nail to the tip, leaving that gap at the bottom but the tip is magnetized as like a "faux french tip" maybe you could try that as well!
Wearing that right now!! My fave look. The hard part is getting the white sheen line to curve the same way on all 5-10 fingers when you move them in bright light. Still working on that 💅
I was just getting frustrated over my magnetics not looking that good/dispersing super quickly this is PERFECT timing. Also I LOL'ed at the magnet 6 results NOT what I was expecting at all LOL
Same, no matter how long I hold the magnet, both as I'm painting and over the top coat, even of I come back and redo the magnet in like 10 minute increments until the polish is fully dry, the lines are still dispersed by the next day lol idk it just doesn't like me for some reason, maybe it's telling me to try the aura style haha
For some polishes, even if the top is dry, it can take hours for the full amount of polish to set up. Obviously we can't sit there for hours holding a magnet. I'll sometimes rig up a little contraption using blue poster sticky tack so I can just keep my finger on the table under it. Then I magnetize a bit longer, and after top coat keep it there for several minutes. It still disperses some, I haven't found a non gel magnetic polish that holds that perfect design.
Could be the top coat, could also just be a polish with a weak magnetic effect. I personally recommend ilnp, heard cirque colors magnetics are pretty good as well
Lately I've been obsessed with doing a velvet style BUT, during the top coat, I'll hover in the aura style from far away for maybe ~10 seconds and it creates SUUUUCH a beautiful look, like the polish still shifts in that velvety way but when it does, you can see a soft, more pronounced line in the middle! Give it a try if you're ever bored. I also can never do the "under the nail" technique (might be my giant manhands 🤣), the line is always not as sharp and it's almost a "double" looking line? Not sure how to explain it. On the question: DEFINITELY text "hey can i call u" and then call, I would never "cold call" as the YOUTHS like to call it :P
Magnetics are my favorite finish. They just look so fancy and eye-catching. I never have trouble with the "finger on top of the magnet" method but I've definitely encountered weak magnets and polishes with less oomph in them than others. Another shortcut is doing one coat of black, then one coat of the magnetic. As for the question, I'm in texting if it's a short back and forth. But I'm not trying to have a whole conversation like that 😅 If we're TALKING, I'm calling!
Thank you for mentioning the shortcut of painting nails one coat of black nail polish first. My sister told me it makes a big difference when she paints the magnetic nail polish on top of it.
That little tee magnet by KBShimmer is a *really* great option for if you want to magnetize the polish on your dominant hand. I tried it about a month or two ago and actually kind of liked it after a bit of practice; too bad I threw that magnet out. I'll have to get it again next month
i love magnetics and keep finding new tricks to keep them fun - my favorite way to paint them is as decals. i have several different shape magnets, neodymium rings, and yes, for this method, refrigerator magnets can be fun too. put them under a plastic sheet (like a zip top bag or binder insert, then paint the magnetic polish over the area. wait til it’s completely dry (several hours) and you’ve just made a decal you can adhere any way you want on your nails! i love doing this the day before i want to change my manicure if i’m not sure i’ll have the time to sit with each nail and a magnet. QDTC won’t disperse the line either as the polish is fully set when sticking the decal on.
@@KelliMarissa when I use the circle or the ring magnet, I usually put it towards the edge of wherever I want it. Then it makes a curved line on the nail. Sometimes it ends up being a curved line, with one side being bright with the magnetic pigment, and the other is dark.
I love magnetic polishes! They take so long, but always worth it. I’ve never bought a collection that came with the magnetic wand so I’ve been using these strong cylinder magnets that I’ve had for years, I clip 2 of them side by side and it’s a really easy way of getting that twisted effect that you tried with the round end of the wand. It’s like getting the best of both the cat eye and velvet style!
My friends thought when I wear magnetic polish my hands will stick to anything magnetic! 😂 How do I send them the video without sending them the video? 😂
I use magnetics a lot. If you use no.4 with a green magnetic polish and centre the stick, it gives off a nice leafy forest look. I use the pattern magnets to give a 3d base to stamping art too.
The problem I'm having is, I hold the magnet over for 2 minutes. And I can see the defined line. Then I apply the topcoat and hold the magnet another 2 mintutes per nail. But an hour later, all the magnet lines have completely faded
We are all now using the 30-lb U-shaped magnet to get the velvet effect. Could you please do a video with how to best use this? There's a lot of nail community talk around this. Thanks in advance!
Having just placed my 1st mooncat order (using the lunar sale 20% off code), I’m so stoked to watch this! These will be my first magnetic polishes so your timing is perfect. Thank you!
I have magnetics from ILNP, Clionadh, and Bluebird Laquer. All beautiful but the Bluebird fades in a few hours. ILNP "Amber" is my longest lasting magnetic. The Clionadh slickadelic collection is just gorgeous beyond comparison.
@@KelliMarissa Oh you need to! You would have loved Clionadh's halloween minis collection. It was still available on sale (discounted) the other day so I'd grab that if you see it. My faves from it are Essence of Toad & Pumpkin Guts. Each polish in the set has a different finish and there's a little pack of halloween themed glitters you can add on top. And the box is just adorable! Plus the slickadelics are incredible looking. I've only tried them as swatches on my silicone mat so far but they're very pretty. And I'm loving the ones I got from their Mixology collections too.
I love Clionadh’s lacquer’s, but I still haven’t tried their Slickadelics because I accidentally forgot to order the shade I had on my wishlist during their summer sale. I didn’t forget that magnetic wand though and it’s the only one I own that I use with my other magnetic polishes, but I just don’t find it to be very strong. Do you own that wand too and enjoy it or does it just work best with Clionadh magnetics instead?
Yes magnetics! I have been so curious of those weird sets of magnets. They actually worked way better than I thought they would. Thank you for showing each of them! I can't seem to get the round side to work well on my nails either. My nails are longer, but I think to narrow? I usually text people, but certain times I will call them. For example if I am last minute seeing if someone wants to go somewhere with me, I will give them a call to try and get a quicker answer. I also call my grandparents and mother all the time 🤣 Our family was always a call when you get home type.
This might be a stupid question, but can you do the all ten nails for the first two coats and then do one nail at time when it comes to the third coat that you plan to magnetize? Love your videos!
Thank you for this video. I've been trying to figure out the Velvet method. I kept putting the magnet directly over and hover around to no good. I see here you use the side of the magnet and create a square! OMG! Magnet sandwich! 🤯 Much appreciated. 💅🏽💅🏽💅🏽
Kelli, Thanks so much for this video. So kind + thoughtful of you for making this video for people like me that don't have any experience with magnetic nail polishes. I recently bought a set of 6 magnetic nail polishes that came with the magnet. I'm looking forward to using them. Thanks to your tutorial + a little practice, I should be able to get the cats eye design that I want. Thanks again! 🥰
I think the special magnets are supposed to be used with the design part facing up so you can see where the design is going to be! (14:51) Also quick life hack: paint the magnetic wands with magnetic polish so you will always know what the design looks like! (16:24)
Thanks about the refrigerator magnets! 😂 ive been trying with my one magnetic polish and im like, its broken it doesnt work! Waste of money! But now this makes sense!😅😂
Ah great video thanks Kelli So I've solved a couple of my issues, I wasn't doing each nail separately so that would explain why it wasn't holding or magnetising the top coat, so I'll be trying that now and I'm sure it will look so much better, thanks again 👍xx
DRK Nails has a top coat for magnetic polishes called Magnetic Top Coat and it's very helpful for polishes that don't magnetize well! For polishes that do magnetize well, it makes the design much mor defined! I would suggest to check it out for those who struggle with magnetics! =D
@@KelliMarissa Some youtubers have reviewed it when I was trying to figure out how it works because it's really runny like solvent or water so it requires a bit of practice when using it. But yea! it helps! =D
I love magnetic polishes. I did kind of struggle with them at first but what I do is I actually magnetize all three coats. I have a shaky hand so I just do one nail at a time and set my magnet on a hard surface magnet side up and then put my finger on top of that and then paint a coat, let it dry a bit, then another coat and then the third coat. I just keep my nail on the magnet the whole time. It takes awhile but it seems to work pretty well for me.
Thank you! My first magnetic polish is in the mail. I have some super strong magnets that have hooks on them to hang things. They are round, a little larger than a quarter. Do you think this would work for the velvet style?
I've been waiting on a holiday themed magnet polish...such as a green halo tree with magnetic bulbs...or a candle (jelly sandwich) with a magnetic flame. As for texting vs. calling... 1. Person I want to communicate with. A. Older generation - call only B. My Own Age - Depends on how tech savvy they are.... C. Younger Gen - Text only. 2. Depends on Subject matter A. General questions (i.e. are you able to talk?, Want to catch some dinner out?, etc) simple y/n questions - text only. B. Opinion, deep thoughts, and hard convos are call only. Just because of the unknown expression in people's voices. But any it's really how well you know the audience and subject matter that determines how you should communicate with the other person or person(s) [Don't forget conference calling]
ILNP cannot be matched. I didn’t know they had that many magnets- that’s how you release magnetic polishes. They gave us literally over 8 options that’s awesome I haven’t even seen half of these magnets. Awesome video, Kelly!!
Kelli, thanks so much for this video! I just bought a magnetic polish and magnet and haven't tried them yet. So timely! Thanks, too, for all the helpful information.
I just bought magnetic gel polishes and feel like they only look super cool and shiny when i shine my phones flashlight on it. Is this the case with everyone / just my noob-technique messing it up for me? All pictures i see online are always taken in strong studio lights too so... feeling a lil frustrated. I want the strong WOW - feel even in normal daylight. I udnerstand that they pop more in strong lighting but now i just got like a pinkish color with some sheen in daylight - not fun haha :)
Kelli, which polish did you use for the magenta like one (with diagonal lines) in the top left of your thumbnail picture for this video. Love to find it and did you do a jelly sandwich with it, if so, what jelly did you use? Thanks!
Do you do gel polish videos? I have been doing my own nails for eight months using extension gel and full tips and gel polish. I do struggle with cat eye so your tips are great. Do these tips hold good for gel polish as well? I do gel polish because I can cure it under a UV lamp and I don’t have to wait for it to dry. I hope you still look at comments on your older videos. You did a lovely job with these!
I bought a magnetic gel polish that I haven't used yet but I'm wondering if it will work well if it doesn't dry on its own while I'm magnetizing. Are there any tips specific to magnetic gel polish? I was thinking about trying them out for an upcoming trip but I don't want to mess them up.
Thanks so much! This was helpful because I was just getting my “wish list” together and was including some magnetic polishes since I don’t have any yet. I appreciate all the 101 videos. 👏 I prefer to talk if the conversation is longer than a few quick texts. It’s always better to hear someone’s voice.
It is really good to have simple nail polish cat eye, so sad, that it isn’t so popular. I see more of hybryd cat eye, but many hybryd have di-hema and hema which gives you allergy. 🤔
well im 40 long over due cute mani methods, but learned hard way the nail salon doesnt discountn for chldrens nails lol, my DD and i just found mooncat poiish and im so obessed then needed to figure out how to use all these interesting polishes etc. stumbled here and loved the vid new sub!! i havent check yet i have a youtube recomend for ombre tips some japanese style do you have a vid on this? thanks in advance!
The magnetic design only appears on my first nail, no matter what I do and then it just doesn’t show up at all on the other nine. I’m doing exactly what you’re telling us to do in the video. Do you have any more advice?
Sadly, the Amazon magnets may work at the beginning and then don’t do too well. Somehow the design ones don’t do too well. They have to be super strong and the quality is just not there like the standard magnets.
ohhh thank you souch for this video... I'm have almost 700 polish and no magnets ... I've always wanted to try and now I'm gonna ! I just purchased amulet while watching this video LOL xo
I just cure my nails each time I apply a coat and like you say one nail at a time. Once I have the design I cure it for 60 seconds and then put a top coat on. I used a black base coat but next time I will definitely try using the magnetic polish all over as a base.
bought a set of polish and bought some extra magnets, too on Amazon. the reviews were good for the set of cat eye color gel but i only had success with one nail with magnet. magnets moved the gel polish around in videos, but magnets did nothing. i held the magnets over nail for at least one minute. Some colors changed to nude, not actual colors in the bottles.
Magnetic is one of my favorite formulas! I keep grabbing Cadillacquer magnetics in PPU and OMG. Stunning. Also love the idea of pulling the pigment up in the bottle before the shake. I prefer texts over phone calls any day. 😅
I love the magnet shapes! I also have a flower looking shape that's like the pen and it creates cute little starbursts. I bought some awhile ago too and I must say that I've found working with gel magnet polishes are WAY easier! You can continually work on it without the risk of it drying and the lines tend to be and stay sharper so I've found but that's just me, I have such a hard time with regular magnetic polish! 😭 But part of it could be differences in quality between brands too.
Ooh yeah magnetic gels are great for taking your time! Honestly using gels really helped me learn how to master regular magnetic polish because it helped me learn how to work quickly (and still giving myself time for mistakes while I practiced with gels haha!)
Thank you for this video! Super helpful & I had no idea there was fancy magnet shapes! My current magnetic mani (menchie cat eye) went pretty well, but I can definitely improve my technique. I was magnetizing every coat which was pretty time consuming, so I’m looking forward to utilizing your tips. Thank you!
Yeah I definitely have a quicker time just magnetizing the top coat, and I think it looks just as good!! 😋 (Edit: I should say top LAYER, and top coat haha)
This is a great video!!! I love seeing all the shapes, that’s really cool! One tip I’ve seen is using multiple wands at once (mostly relevant if you’re using the under-the-finger trick) but one thing I found is you have to be consistent when doing that because the magnets might have different polarizations, so sometimes I would undo the magnetization of a previous layer when I use a different magnet!
Great video! Are we to assume all magnetic polishes are GEL and you need to cure? As a lazy person I’d love to just do my polish the regular way, then top with “regular” magnetic, then topcoat? I’m old school I guess, but LUVVVVV the velvet look! (Lots of texting and emojis, 1/3 calling 😉)
Hi! I'm actually only using regular nail polishes (that dry by air) in this video - gel magnetic polishes do exist, but honestly I prefer regular polish as well 🙂 the easiest way to tell is if a polish comes in a clear bottle (where you can see the color inside), that means no curing necessary and it'll just dry like normal polish!
Great video! After years of ignoring my nails, I recently discovered ILNP polish on Amazon. Two months later, I own more nail polish than I have in my life and have even sent a 15-color care package to my daughter. My problem is that I have "organized" my colors and can't tell which ones are magnetic. Any ideas on how to figure it out without searching online for every color I have?
Ooh that's a good one and I've been in the same predicament! It's a little tedious but my trick is going through my collection and holding a magnet to each bottle to check if it's magnetic, and if it is I just make a note of that! You could potentially put a sticker on the cap for each magnetic polish to make it easier once you've figured them all out!
Any idea for me, I don't paint on my natural nail, I pain nail tips on the stands but I think the magnet at the bottom of the stand is effecting the magnet polish
Thank you for posting this Kelli!! I have many magentic nail polishes in my collection. Some polishes seem to work better than others. I have an ILNP called Sandbar that barely looks like it magnetized so i am going to go back and try again after watching this. Thank you!!!!!!! ❤🎉
I do think that ILNP's first few polishes were much more subtle in terms of magnetic pigment, so if it's one of their earlier ones it might just be less magnetic 😅 but their new ones are truly amazing imo!!
The special pack you got from Amazon is SOOOO neat!!! Dang....clearly I need more magnetic polish. However, my nails are even smaller than yours. If I grow them really long I might get away with it. "runs away to Amazon"
Probably stupid question bc I'm new to everything regarding diy Nails. So I could use this on gel nails, let it dry for up to 60 seconds then put a layer of top coat and cure it? Would that work?
So if you're using a gel magnetic polish, you can just apply the magnet for a few seconds and then cure immediately, and then apply your top coat and cure that! You definitely want to cure each layer once you're done with your design/application! And please always feel free to ask questions 🥰
For your question I'm a texter. I hate calling people. Even before cell phones I didn't like calling people bc I was always scared I was bothering them. Know it sounds weird but that's just me lol
Ohh it's from a brand called Starrily, the polish is called Amulet (it's available for purchase on the Starrily website!) 🥰 And welcome to my little corner of the internet haha happy to have ya here 😍
I am definitely a texter but if I do get a call, I have to have it on speakerphone because I can’t hear when it’s not on speakerphone 🤣🤣🤣 struggle of getting old but I had 3 magnetic wands. Where they went, I do not know. They got attached to something & disappeared lol.
Even using very strong magnets that aren't mean for nail polish, won't give you a nice effect. I tried using a couple different shapes of rare-earth magnets and I think they're TOO powerful, because the magnet polish goes haywire and doesn't make a nice line at all. So I think you have to just use nail magnets, they're the right shape and strength.
Ooh that must have been an interesting experiment though! I don't have any strong magnets but I did try a fridge magnet and a chip clip magnet once to no avail LOL
It definitely depends on person. Short stuff I'd say text otherwise a call. I hate texting. I don't mind reading a long text or 20, from my sister, but replying in kind is so much work not fun or connective like a phone call.
I followed the steps, exactly, and it worked. But once I put my topcoat on, my cat eye I disappeared, and it looks like regular polish. Any tips on what I did wrong? Do I have to hold a magnet over a topcoat?
Just a FYI, you can use any magnet that you have at home, you do not need a special nail magnet. I even used fridge magnets and they worked, even though you can only do the aura style of magnetisation 😋 But if you have any other shapes of magnets at home, give them a try 😁😉
Oh thanks for sharing your experience! I've only tried fridge magnets and I haven't been able to get them to work 😅 and I don't think I have any other magnets around but its definitely nice to have options on what to use!!
My first magnetic polish is in the mail. I have some super strong magnets that have hooks on them to hang things. They are round, a little larger than a quarter. Do you think this would work for the velvet style? Thanks.
@@WalkingbytheSpiritAlways The magnet should work really well for the velvet style. You should first test on the bottle to see which side of the magnet pulls the magnetic flakies the best. You should also try to see if you could do the cat eye style with the sides of the magnet, if the magnet has narrow sides 😃
@@antheeamorganThank you. Looking forward to trying it out. I got INLP Skye. By the way, I named one of my identical twin daughters- Morgan Alyse back in 1988. God bless.
Yeah eventually they'll settle into one color which is a little bittersweet because I love the shift, but usually mine settle into the cold state which I usually prefer anyway so it's not too upsetting haha!!
I definitely need to lol my silly trick is that I keep a magnetic wand stuck to my drawers and anytime I pull out a polish I stick the wand to it to see if it's magnetic 😂😂
I try to be very mindful of the environment to counteract my not-so-environmentally-friendly hobby, but a pack of magnets really isn't too harmful. We do what we can but over 70% of harmful emissions are caused by big companies, and that's probably an outdated statistic. We have celebrities like Taylor Swift flying her private jet on average other day (and emitting "1,184.8 times more than the average person’s total annual emissions" as of July) and that's just one example - those are the people and corporations we should be fighting against and urging to be more mindful of their environmental impact.
What an awesome deep dive on magnetics! I’ve been pretty lucky with my small amount of experience working with magnetic polish. I’ve noticed that not all magnets are created equal, so using a strong magnet will work much better. I’m very intrigued by the magnet pack you demo’d, candy cane nails would be so fun! Thanks as always for sharing your wisdom. You’ve inspired me to try the aura technique.
I was just thinking, it might be even more fun to do a red base and then do a silver magnetic like Amulet over it with diagonal stripes! Instant candy cane manicure!
I’m really digging these 101 videos again!! I think seeing how you work with the Amazon magnets for instance helps so much! I always see them but never knew if they would really work! I’m also curious about those long barrel magnets I’ve seen. Have you tried tide for the aura or velvet look? I’ve read it works better. I’ve also read that using regular topcoat instead of quick dry works better with magnetic polishes. What are your thoughts? Thanks for sharing as usual! I’m slowly getting back to feeling better and trying to catch up on all the videos I’ve missed! Love you!! ❤😅💅
I hate that magnetic polish got lunped in with a bunch of other 1 and done trends, because its so pretty and you can do so many different looks with it!
