I need to better understand the purpose of that comment… he is better than Adu! Adu had a career that maybe lasted 5 years. When he turned 21-22, when one should be growing in their abilities, he began a ridiculous decline to where his career was mostly over by 25. Adu could still be playing for a top side… he is 35! Except that he was a poor player. He was mature for his age which made him stand out but he didn’t do anything unique or had a better understanding of the game. Regarding Sullivan, and this needs to be understood among Americans, he is no better than your average academy player in Europe! Barcelona was struggling with players leaving, injuries, and risk of FFP violations if they purchased more players. So they brought up Juveniles to play. Hector, Cubarsi, Guiu and Yamal! They brought them up to play for the first team between the ages of 15-17! Most top clubs have the same sorts of players (minus Yamal) and could be productive for the first team. They don’t because they want the kids to grow and mature and for them to enter first team soccer at an appropriate age. Even Yamal was brought up due to Dembele leaving. Had Dembele stayed, Yamal doesn’t start! Bringing Sullivan on in a game they are winning 5-1 in the 85th minute is a publicity move to make him the youngest to appear in an MlS game. Adu was 14 as well so Sullivan is better because he is a younger 14 year old!? Maybe he plays next year but if he continues on the path he is on now, he will never be ready for top tier soccer in Europe. The MLS will prepare him for nothing. He needs to be in Europe now, playing with the next great players of Europe. But I am seeing the same hype around Sullivan that was thrown on Adu and I don’t see a unique talent… just a mature 14 year old who matured faster than the majority of kids his age and caused him to seriously stand out. We will see what we see but I would recommend everyone here watch Barcelona’s La Masia juveniles especially against Mallorca and see just what the standard is at that level. These kids play no different than the first team in the understanding of the game and in their technical skill. The only difference is physicality. Everyone builds physicality. What you can’t get back are years of playing with elite players rather than MLS players which is lower than academy systems in Europe. Americans are so desperate to have a top tier player that we are willing to hope the hell out of a player than let him be a kid and develop. Let him train with the first team and play with second team but having a 14 year old exclusively surrounded by men is seriously the absolute worst possible thing you can imagine. Yamal continued to play with the Juveniles even when he was 16 to keep him connected to kids his own age. He is a generational talent and his abilities were light years beyond kids his age. Sullivan would not stand out in Europe and he will never start for Man City if he continues down this path. Never! It is very unfortunate.
