I moved to Cape Town a few months ago now, and while I love this place, there are a few that really surprised me and I took some time to get used to.
So if you are thinking about moving to South Africa, or even just visiting the country and want to be prepared, this video is for you!
I will also give you some practical advice about living here.
Enjoy :)

Spot on observation for somone living here for the short period of time. You are kind and open to explore and look over stereotypes about SA. Sure, people of all comunities, groups and races are mostly kind and friendly. Just because of the minority who is not and just because government is not eager to act strictly against crime, South Afrika is well known world wide for the crime. I don't want to jinx my personal experience, but I think that those stories are incredibly inflated. This country deserves more positive marketing and praise then it gets.

Tip: the easiest way to get South African food is street food. I suppose it harder to get said street food if you are in a very affluent neighborhood…but around the malls you could find some or on the roadsides. Ultimately, get to know a local they’ll take you to some spots. In the stores, you can get koeksisters, dröewors, billtong (butchery for these last two). I’m not South African, but this was my finding when l stayed there.

Emilia, we can mostly agree with your points. The good, the bad, the ugly. Since I´m an avid traveller myself, it is always good to know with what the RU-vidr like you is comparing. Since you are an Italian and I´ve been in Italy myself and people do come late, take things easy going, and driving in Rome is not a joke. Italians have a lot of temper ( I know I had an Italian girlgriend from Sicily) nad Italian politcs, chaos is in Europe at least, infamous. Italian men are also quite confident in appraoching women in my memory and experience. Let the truth out, ain´t no shame when you are going to go there. Now, I won´t trade my Italian experiences for anything, great food, great people, great sense for la dolce vita. SA is one of the most incredible countries in the world. I wonder why always on the "negative" spotlight, when most things are actually positive. Millions of tourists from Europe and the rest of the world come here, millions of immigrants are here, millions would like to come here? So, if it is so bad as the media and RU-vidrs are saying, why do all these people keep coming or have booked, planning? To all South Africans, start praising your country outside and critisize it internally, like most countries do?!Yebo?

One thing South Africa will teach you is how to take care of yourself. We definitely do not live in a "nanny state" and the law is just a suggestion. True freedom. And, yes, friendliness is not a disease, it is quite heartwarming. One of the reasons we can still dance and sing through difficulties. And, yes, our men, in general, are still brave and respectful. They go after what they want without fear, but will respect your wishes without feeling offended. In my eyes, pretty much what most women want. And, if you are dating, he will protect you with his life. And, yes, this is a generalization and we have many different cultures.

@@Afrosoil11 I guess you don't live near cities if it takes that long to get work. Taxis are the fastest means of transportation in South Africa outside the Gautrain. Taxis are always picking up or dropping commuters every 10 minutes in most cities. Why the need for Load Shedding? An answer from someone (me) who was born here in the Cape Town area in 1959. During Apartheid (the political system in place by then) most homes did not have services such as electricity and sewerage removal - the 'bucket system' was in place. In fact - in the old SA most South Africans were moved to 'homelands' and they were not seen as South Africans by Apartheid. Fast Forward to the end of Apartheid and the 1st General Elections during which we ALL South Africans could vote in 1994. The party that received the most political support was the ANC. The ANC over-promised but under-achieved when it comes to services such as electricity.

I went to England and the shock i had seeing next to no houses with fences around them. My cousins said they even leave their house with the doors unlocked and sometimes they just forget to lock it. Cant be doing that in SA😂😂😂 Their transportation system, they have it locked down. Its so good and effective. The amount of people that take the tube, taxi, bus, uber even walk and cycle is scary and way more than here. Their lanes are separated bus lane, car lane, bicycle lane. Id say half the people dont even use or even need their cars half the time. My moms friend who lives in England almost never uses her car to the point that she only noticed it had been stolen the next day when she wanted to quickly drive to the gym. Shed normally walks and takes the tube but she had a busy day so this was the one time she actually needed to use her car and it was gone.😂 Although i will say the English dont really engage with others. I remember walking with my family and like 80% of people were walking with their earphones or headphones in. Dont expect anyone to greet you or even look in ur direction. Youre literally not even there for them unless youre in their way of course 😂

I think 'friendliness' in public that many foreign travelers refer to can also be a euphemism and all encompassing term which includes unwanted/inappropriate/aggressive advances, plain rudeness and being accosted. I am saying this as a somewhat introverted South African male. The country is a melting pot of different cultures and upbringings, but SA people across various(/all) cultures can seem somewhat rude, loud and overstep boundaries. One has to adapt to this, which may involve keeping ones guard up, esp. if you are a woman.

People who aren't consumed by negativity. A lot of people have had great experiences moving here. It's not all doom and gloom. There's still hope and a lot of us feel that way. We survived apartheid and we will survive the ANC
