Everything You Need To Know About Multi-Piece Wheels 

I'm not sure I agree with the part when you say "silicone keeps the wheel together". The bolts are what hold the wheel together, and depending on how many there are, they are usually fairly tight. The silicone is there to keep the air in the tires from escaping. No matter how much you torque the bolts to, air will find it's way out of the wheel if they are not siliconed, or welded. Also, siliconing is done as a last step before putting the tires on. And preferably 24 hrs or more before tires are put on. The way you explained it, you seem to say the parts are stuck together, then siliconed, then bolted together. The only reason you would do it this way is if the barrel and lip are designed in a way that doesn't allow you to cover over the seam between the two parts after everything is bolted together. Like on a '0' lip, where the lip actually folds overtop of the mating surfaces.

I think you guys need some research on clamping force equations. For example on a 1/4-20 fastener at 15 ftlbs, that fastener has a clamping force of 300-500lbs depending on friction coeff. So multiply that by 30, 9000-15000lbs.

A big deterrent of multi-piece wheels may be the price, but what some people don't realize is that older multi-piece wheels can be around the same price as some one piece Rotiforms, and if you don't have the spec you want, then you can make it. Before I had my LMGT2s, I had a set of Konig specials, and what I loved about them, other than the design ofcourse, is the idea that I can rebuild them if I don't like the current specs.

i bought a set of welded 2 piece Enkei RS-III, split them, refinished and rebuilt them. wheels cost $500, new hardware was $55 (through my shop) and i spent maybe another $50 on paint. the real cost was in man hours. i have probably over 50hrs into them for blasting, sanding, polishing and painting, but it was 100% worth it

Conclusion: If you can find single piece wheels that will fit and perform to your satisfaction in place of multi piece wheels, you're objectively better off with the single piece wheels. In short, the only logical reason to choose multi piece wheels is fitment.

The absolute worst thing that piss me off about directional rims is that the left and right are the exact same ( rotation to the front on left then rotation to the rear on right) how hard is it to invert a CAD design and make right and left rims???? Okay, so what he doesn’t tell you is everything he is saying is in the aspect of buying them new. I’ve had 4 sets of 3 pieces wheels and I’ve never in my life paid more than 2.2k at most. I’ve had Work, 2 GMR, and currently AGs 19x12 -60. If you want 3 piece wheels than just buy them used.
