Everything you need to know about pacemakers in Afib 

I have had a pacemaker for 2yrs now. I,m so thankful to the Doctors for looking after me. My quality of life is much better now & I,m feeling a lot better.

Thank you for this video. I am a 72 year old female and have had Paroxismal Atrial Fibrillation for 12 years. I have been through all the drugs to surpress the the symptoms including the worst and last one (for Me) called Amiodarone. The side effects of this drug was horrendous and caused problems with my thyroid, terrible sore eyes and could not go out in the sun as I would burn so quickly. After being admitted to hospital 33 times with fast PAF I know just about all the nurses and paramedics by name. I have had 3 catheter ablations and 4 cardioversions and now have a massivley enlarged left atrium. My life was becoming totally intolerable. At this stage I was having PAF episodes approx. every 2 weeks. There was no other path to go down, I was terrified at the suggestion of my Cardiologist to have a " Pace and Ablate" proceedure. I was also by this time experiencing periods of low blood pressure and faintness. I met this half way and just had a pacemaker fitted October 2016 just to control these symptoms of which it did. My episodes were now changing into periods of very fast heart rate (Tachycardia) that would last for weeks. This made me feel exhausted, frightened and every movement of my body seemed to make it worse. Still terrified at the thought of having this "Pace and Ablate" proceedure I decided as a last resort to try some more horrible drugs with their side effects to try and control my heart rate. I took them for a further 12 months and still had emergency A&E hospital admissions they just did not work anymore. I finally I saw the consultant again and it was agreed that this drug treatment was not working, and for the best I really needed to have the "Pace and Ablate " so as to have a better quality of life with NO more AF episodes. I had the proceedure done at Harefield Hospital nr London in Oct 2017 and have never looked back. I know I have this little metal object in my chest but I feel so much better now and can get on with my life. To all of you out there who may be going through this awful dilemma, when you have reached the end of all your options this really is the best thing that you can do for yourself. If the pacemaker you were born with is not working properley despite all the horrible drugs, ablations, emergency A&E hospital visits etc. and giving you hell, then get all the help that is offered. Try not to worry too much, then hopefully you too can get on with YOUR life too!

I have watched so many of your videos on a fib and I watched you on TV (don’t remember the show). I love the way you make everything so easy to understand for the average person. I have had a fib on occasion for 5+ years and my cardiologist recommended a pacemaker after a 2 week Holter monitor showed my heart slowed drastically on a few occasions. This video has given me enough info. to ask some questions and feel comfortable getting a pacemaker if recommended. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge in a way that we can all understand! Keep it up...

I thank you for sharing this post. I have Afib and was diagnosed Jan. 2017. I had OHS June 2017, with both Aortic and Mitral valves were replaced. The MAZE procedure was done at that time, as well. I have remained in Afib. According to my Kardia, I have not had Afib since December 14th. It has been proposed to implant a Pacemaker with AV node ablation. I am still on the fence with that. Thank you for explaining all this, it is so helpful. I always look forward to your posts! Thanks again!

Thank you for this! I had lone afib once 9 months ago, ive changed diet, no caffeine, take a beta blocker and 500mg magnesium. I hope it doesn't happen again, but all your vids educate me. Bless you.

Hi , thank you for your video. Your channel has helped me greatly . I started with AF in 1989 paroxysmal initially them permanent AF . I was a top class cyclist until my late twenties . AF became more and more troublesome over the years . I then had an ablation every year for 5 years. Thought it had cured it . Stayed in sinus rhythm for 2 years . Then dropped into AF again ... surgeon decided to go for AV node ablation and pacing .... day before the procedure I dropped back into sinus rhythm! .... ok for 6 months then dropped into AF ..... procedure booked again ..... day before procedure .... dropped back into sinus again !! .... now been in sinus for 6 months. . I really don’t know what’s happening ? I do think that changing my diet has helped . After your video on inflammation .... I tried to take lots of olive oil etc and I genuinely feel better .... fat but better ! If it drops out into AF again I will have the AV node ablation and pacemaker fitted as I really feel ill when in AF . My surgeon says that my atria are so scarred now they are not contributing much to my output anyway ? Any advice would be welcome . Thank you

Thank you so much for this information. I am getting ready to wear a heart monitor for 5 days to see if I need a pacemaker. I have AFib and my heart rate goes into the low 50 to high 40 sometimes. I recently had a second Cardioverison and put on Tikosyn 500mcg twice daily. Am in normal rythmn. But Dr worries about the low heart rate. So he wants to see how often I go low. I was in AFib all the time and so SOB but since Cardioverison and Tikosyn I am much better, able to do things I haven't been able to do for 2 years. Your information really helps keep up the good videos.

The drugs just did not work for me,except Amarodian,but the side effects got quite disturbing. So,in late Sept. I got an Ablation and pacemaker...I now feel like I did before this heart nonsense started. I get my pacemaker adjusted this month.

My husband was diagnosed with tachycardia was on metoprolol Er 50 mg for 6 years and now has a pacemaker at age 34 I believe it was from the meds that caused the slow heart rate.

My mother who is 88 years young with Afib, just had the little micra bullet pacemaker implanted, she is doing fantastic! They may end up doing an ablation. They are going to try medication first. She has an awesome surgeon where we live in Thousand Oaks ,Ca.

As far as I can remember , as an adult, I have had a slow Heart beat. 40 per minute, while at rest, and about 60 after a fast walk. I was told that people with slow heart beats, were most prone to Afib. BUT--- the consultant said to me, we only get concerned when it falls below 30 bpm. I later had a Pacemaker fitted , because after two unsuccessful Ablations, a third was considered, but, as my A.V. Node was apparently too damaged, I was assured that a Pacemaker was best. A year later, it was replaced by a more updated one. At rest it beats at 60--per min.

Your videos are great. They answer so many questions. Could you please do a video on hyperthyroidism and afib. My wife had a thyroidectomy about 25 years ago and has always taken too much medication because she didn't want to get fat. Her T3 runs at 9. Now she has afib and I think that her overmedicating could be a lot of the cause??? Her doctors don't seem to see it for some reason.

Hi !!! I have been watching your videos on youtube for a while now. Thank for sharing your medical experience. My mother who is now 87 years has been "Eliquis 2.5 mg twice since May of 2017. She was diagnosed with "Afib" in 2017. I am concern about the long term side effects of "Eliquis". Is there a better drug out there in market at this time. Thank you.. Hector Godinez

Heart rate drops to low 46 and high of 161 while trying to sleep! Excessive tiredness, dizziness, blackout...yes, I've had it. The Doctors tried ablation and another procedure, unfortunately they did not work. Great information/video. My question is if the heart rate drops to say 46, does the pacemaker activate to increase the rate?

I have a pacemaker, had one attack of afib 2 years ago tjat stopped after 50 min. So, don't know if it helped. Also had one NSVT over a year ago 12 beats. Did the dual lead pacemaker maje me have this or did it help pull me out of it? Been to 2 drs no one has answered this. I have the pacemaker for sick sinus syndrome. Had symptoms with the NSVT. I have found that whenever I am stressed my heart gets literally painful or some sort of a burning or tingling sensation... Should I go back to the cardiologist or do I need to learn how to manage stress?

Appreciated the video. While waiting for my 2-lead pacemaker I had a brain hemorrhage (6 years ago). The consultant thought it was a blood clot caused by afib. He wouldn't give me blood thinners without an MRI, which I couldn't have after the pm implant. He said I was at high risk of another. As most clots are caused by afib I wondered whether sealing the atrial appendage would have greatly reduced the risk. He didn't suggest this. Am I right?

Hello, I was diagnosed with a condition called Brugada syndrome back in Jan of 2018 at the age of 32. After an episode of AFIB (and a heart rate of 240 Bpm) I was able to get enough strength to get to the hospital in which I was diagnosed. While there I got an Ablation as well as a Implanted Defibrillator to treat my condition. The unfortunate part of everything is I've developed really bad anxiety from everything that happened and am fearful to get my heart rate up and my quality of life has decreased drastically. Could you possibly do a video about Implanted Defibrillators as well as Brugada syndrome? I'm hoping the more I understand what's going on in my body and far I could push myself and not have to worry about the Defibrillator shocking me the less fearful I will be to workout and get my heart rate up like I used to. Thank you for your time.

Dr Gupta can u please explain why we only pace ventricles in A fib since the atria arent working so why not pace the atria too?

If paroxysmal afib is caused by low heart rate during sleep then can treating the bradycardia with a single pace to the ventricle without ablating the AV node cure afib?

Thank you, I want to ask you, my husband has a biventricular device and in 100% AF for some time on a waiting list for an ablation. I'm a Physiotherapist and I am aware of his risks whilst he waits for this procedure but unfortunately the NHS Cornwall is struggling 😢.....why does this AF occur and if he has the ablation what is life exigency? He's 46yo.

Sorry but this is not everything you need to know, I put off having catheter ablation for my afib cause I was scared of post ablation issues, my worst fear came true , my EP ablated to much of my sinus node and now I have sick sinus Syndrome, ..I was not informed of this particular post complication and this is EP's fault ..now I'm worse and completely miserable
