Plant-based diets are more popular than ever, and for good reason.
Research shows that people who eat an abundance of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains tend to live longer and stay healthier than those who eat little.
You probably know this and, understandably, are considering a major overhaul to your diet, but aren’t wholly sold on the idea of cutting out animal products entirely.
How are you supposed to get enough protein?
Will you be able to cover all of your nutritional bases with plants alone?
Will you actually enjoy your meal plans?
Well, the short answer to each of those questions is “yes,” but it’s not necessarily easy because certain animal foods make it much easier to improve your body composition and stay healthy.
That’s why more and more people are turning to “modified” vegetarian diets like the pescatarian diet, which is simply a vegetarian diet that includes seafood.
Some pescatarians also eat eggs and dairy, as well, which is technically known as “lacto-ovo-pescatarianism.”
As you’ll see, pescatarian diets require a little more fine-tuning than regular omnivorous diets, but if you understand and address the downsides and limitations, you’ll have no problem using the pescatarian diet to build a lean, healthy, athletic body you can be proud of.
By the end of this podcast, you’re going to understand . . .
- What the pescatarian diet is
- Its pros and cons
- The most common muscle-building mistakes pescatarians make
- How to use the pescatarian diet to maximize muscle growth, fat loss, and strength gains
- What foods to eat on a pescatarian diet plan
- And more!
Let’s start by defining exactly what a pescatarian diet is.
3:31 - What is the pescatarian diet?
5:36 - What are the benefits of a pescatarian diet?
16:37 - What are the drawbacks of a pescatarian diet?
26:05 - Does the pescatarian diet help with weight loss?
28:00 - Does the pescatarian help with building muscle?

I love being a pescatarian. I have an auto immune disease and am vitamin d deficient all before transitioning to this diet. I take a supplement. Any plant based diet has a lot of anti-inflammatory foods which helps me personally. I do eat fish about 3 days a week and the other days are vegetarian meals. I'm a big fan of lentils a great protein. I have a rule that I try to stick to as best I can and that is if it looks like it's made in a factory don't eat it. It works for the most part. My gluten free granola bars aren't baked in my oven lol.

Same here! I have MS and I'm vitamin D deficient, I am pescatarian for 8 years, I eat fish 3-4 times per week, and the other meals are vegetarian or vegan. I feel great and my MS have been completly stable. Hypertrophy training is something that works out very well for me too!

I keep Kosher, so no shrimp and such. I am essentially pescatarian; include dairy and eggs. I have met others the same. I would greatly appreciate a video on pescatarian kosher diet. I will share the hell out of it in the like 300 facebook groups I am in. Either way, thank you for doing this video.

this was of particular interest to me because I vascillate between wanting to be ovo-pescetarian, and a plant strong based omnivore. and the struggle is EXACTLY what you say - the want of variety in the diet to keep it interesting. this was very interesting and informative. thanks!

oh, and I did not specify WHY I want pescetarian..... a variety of reasons, feels lighter in my stomach, slightly better on the animal industry impact, longevity etc, basically several reasons, but mostly how it makes me feel better.

As of lately I have completely gone gluten free. It was a drastic change but I have found enough foods to supplement what I would have gotten from meat and grain. The trick is look for things that say whole grains. Whole grains are gluten free. Occasionally I'll have gluten and my body feels. For anyone choosing a diet or lifestyle it really is a lot of wor kand takes a lot of research. If I knew years ago what I know now I would have taken care of my body so much better.

@Arkham Knight If you're talking about almond milk nothing. But the mucus that animal milk or dairy is unhealthy for your gut and hormones in most cases.

@Dona Sawtelle the biggest issue with dairy is a1 casein. Recent studies showed that milk containing A1 β-casein promoted intestinal inflammation and exacerbated gastrointestinal symptoms. There are cows with milk producing a2 casein which is good for you but that's rare. A1 is common in cheese too. To be fair this is more of an issue with cows since other animal milks like goat milk have a2 casein which is less inflammatory and due to goat diets we can gain phytonutrients!

Living as long as humanly possible means I get to enjoy life longer??? Also congratulations on your personal diet, but some people need to change their diets for their own reasons. If you don't want it, don't do it but don't shame people for wanting to be the best people they can be.

I was pescatarian for 8 months in 2018. I lost 67 pounds and the food was delicious. The problem was the price of fish going up. Since the pandemic I haven’t been able to find cheap fish anywhere
@pappas610

Remember my friend that eating is the most intimate thing you do as a human. You are what you eat. What you eat is absorbed into you fully, and ethier heals or hurts you. So pay the extra 3$ and save on kemo treatment. Also cheap fish is most likely not caught in great places. Now a days they pull fish out of the ocean with cancer tumors and just cut the tumors off and use the rest. Among other things are found in MOST fish now a days. So you have to pay for the good quality. But do your research. I only comment because I want you to be healthy haha. Blessings friend

I do not agree with the statement that it is harder to follow a Pescatarian Diet than an Omnivorous Diet. Your location and its adjustment to a non-carnivorous diet is of course a factor, but I simply substituted Sheep, Beef, Pork and Poultry with Seafood 🤷🏻‍♂️ Still enjoy my food tremendously, and I do my bit from a moral and environmental standpoint.

I lost 82 pounds in 10 months on keto when I felt my body ran it's course with the diet. I came across the Mediterranean diet which allows much of the healthy fats avocado salmon olive oil etc.... It was things I was able to have. Difference was I could have fruit and legumes. A huge fan of lentils. So I transitioned to the Mediterranean diet and after two months of weighing measuring logging my food I noticed something. I wasn't eating meat often. That's when I realized that I was a pescatarian. It's a great transition diet from keto. I haven't gained weight back like I've been told I would. I stick to 1100-1200 calories a day. Plus I don't eat fish every day. Usually 3 days a week.

The new term for someone who eats a vegan diet except for fish is Pescavegan... someone who eats a ovo or lacto-ovo diet except fish is pescatarian. This thing seems to keep evolving. Also, I used to think the wild vs. farm raised was all hype... I used to swear it was but after a little research realizing that I was wrong. When I started doing my research I realized it was even common sense and I didn't realize why I didn't recognize the points I found in my research before. Even though most farms have a some sort or a waste filtration where the fish our housed many of the fish in the farms are still many times swimming, consuming, and breathing their own waste. This is not good with regards to their flesh even though they are generally feed a good diet. Quite a few environmentalist, and even nutritionist recommend wild caught over farm raised. These particular individuals have no dog in the fight. While the oceans does have pollutants in it it is very vast. large and there are many more regions of fresh water than in a small contained farm.

It's not at all difficult to be vegan! 🤣 Sure, you need B12 and it's a good idea to get vegan omega 3, made from algies. If you add fish you don't need to eat any suppliments at all, if you eat a healthy whole food plant based diet without processed food. You don't need nearly as much protein as you think! A table spoon of flax seeds and/or hemp/chia, cooked lentils, beans or occasionally some soy in the form of edamame beans, tofu or tempeh, is enough.
