I remember when my family went to a lake to celebrate 4th of July, but I was on my period so I didn’t swim. I had an older guy cousin ask me multiple times why I wasn’t swimming, and after making a few excuses, I just said that I was on my period. He went “ ew TMI” but his wife laughed at him for being so nosy and getting an answer. Just insane how periods are such a hush topic but a very common experience.

listening into this being 15 while on my period made me feel so happy. i don’t think you guys realize just how comforting it is to hear women you look up to talk about their experiences and what makes things better/could make things easier. also, it’s kinda fun to know that i synced up with y’all which sounds weird when i read it back, but whatever. thank you guys for stuff like this, and i can’t wait for next episode of wine about it!

It's always interesting to hear people in America talking about sex education. I'm from Germany (I'm a guy) and I know that since I was a child I've always had books about the human body and therefore also about sex education and also about female periods. And we also had lessons on the subject, from around the age of eight or so. For as long as I can remember, all of these issues have been normal to me. And I know that it's not like that everywhere in Germany either, but I'm still surprised and grateful that my mother dealt with the subject so openly and well, because I hear so many horror stories from others on the subject.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, it is fascinating to get an outside view. Not a single US state has sex education as comprehensive as anywhere in Germany. A couple progressive states get close, but lately the resurgence of people who think US sex ed is too informative are winning victories in local school districts.

Im from germany as well (30 something year old guy) and I can attest to that, sometimes listening to podcasts like this episode and during my 11 visits to the US by now (a couple long ones, i did a semester studying in the US as a young adult e.g.), I feel like I know more about female anatomy and periods then even some of the US women I met (or giving qt's state of education what i heard in this episode or on fear&). Its a shame that basic human biology 101 is such a taboo in the US, even more crazy to me that its considered to be "gross". By arround eight to 10 or so I knew everything thanks to education and books etc. I also did tampon runs for my mom as a young teenager when she wasnt feeling well and they were on the shopping list when I was getting groceries and stuff. NO problem/shame/whatever have you. It makes me sad as a men to hear US women talking about sterotypical men behavior about periods and stuff in the US, I wish you guys had a positive experience like we do here. I would feel ashamed as a man not being able to support or even understand my female companions during that time of the month :(

Impractical jokers did this with the labor one I think but its the same cramps feeling just 100 times worse (I've had a baby, it feels like period cramps but more like period apocalypse cramps while feeling like you have to take a giant shit) he was on the ground by the end of it.

thank you QT and Maya. This podcast should be titled more directly though, as it would be such a good educational resource for younger women to find. I know the algorithm suppresses that kind of title, but when you're searching it directly, it could be really useful to find an hour long discussion from 2 women about their experiences with periods

I have fully passed out from my periods and had a lot of blood loss. It can be from cysts rupturing you didn't even know you had. It is a terrifying experience. Especially when you have no clue what is going on due to like of knowledge on the topic. Which was me at one point.

about the tampons: in germany it's not common at all to have the applicator on the tampons, mostly we just use non applicator tampons here. it's a lot better for the environment and I think it's just a matter of what you're used to:))

Same in the Netherlands. I just shove them up there with my finger. I was wondering if it was a long nail-thing since I always have short nails. But I guess it's a cultural thing instead. We also have really small bathrooms in my country and not always a sink. Which makes me very hesitant about using a divacup. It feels too messy without a sink nearby so I am most likely never gonna try it. (Yes , I do wash my hands but not in the toilet room)

I have PCOS so I used to get superr bad cramps (I'd go unconscious from), but then I started birth control and it made everything a lott better. Birth control has so much more uses than just preventing pregnancy

I have a very “holistic” mother so I tried EVERYTHING for my pcos, but nothing worked, I would get my period every 6 months and bleed for like a month at a time and I used to take the month odd school but once I started working I got myself on birth control and it’s been such a blessing!!!

for everyone thinking about trying diva cups i recommend menstrual discs as an alternative if you're afraid of the cup suctioning. they're a good reusable option for anyone with a heavy flow, also the youtube channel 'period nirvana' has tons of info on reusable menstrual products. i've been using a disc for about 2 years now and it's way comfier than tampons or cups in my opinion

i made the mistake of wearing a pad-like diaper thing one time when i had no pads left, and it did not soak up period blood the way pads do, so i would advise against wearing diapers on your period lol. like the blood just sat on top it was a disaster also when i got my first period i was 11 and i didn't know what was happening, but i also didn't assume i was dying, so i free bled the whole week. my mom only found out because she went through my hamper and saw the huge blood stains on my underwear. i was also just generally not into telling my parents anything for no particular reason

Before my older sister got on the pill her periods were insanely painful. At 10 years old I would have to help her out from time to time playing music that made her relax and bring beverages/food that helped. I always found it weird that there’s a taboo about it.

From the therapy side, it's a long ride of acceptance & figuring it all out and you won't feel change right away, you've gotten so used to the same bad feelings that others will notice change before you. I think it's great QT talks about it and I can definetly see her more open and feeling more secure about that. I'm a 26 yo woman and have been going to therapy since I was 12, I found a good therapist until I was about 21 and I've been with her ever since. I know how it is to feel like hell or like a nuisance or disliked or lost but I'm glad I know others feel this too; it's like we are in this and it's real. That being said, in the least parasocial way, QT makes the best events but I can definetly understand how overwhelmed she feels after everything she's done the past week; it's important that one takes care of themselves too, give yourself some time to exhale. Thanks for the pod tho, appreciate all Maya and QT do. #BuyMayasMerchBeforeAugust4th

I'm so late listening to this but I wanted to add as person with periods: ever since I started using diva cups i feel less shame abt my period and I became a huge advocate for both the cup and generally talking about periods. They helped e figure out I was bleeding too much and had to do sth about it. I definitely recommend you both try them again!

hey love the pod been watching since day one. i know your pod has mainly male audience and this was a great podcast to teach them about period stuff but im a 22F (started when i was maybe 14) and have actually never myself used a tampon because ive heard all the horror stories. I got my period when I was 11 and I thought I was dying. My mom didnt talk to me about it because she didn't expect me to get it so young. Now I openly talk about it when I have it with men and women. Im not going to feel shame over something normal.

I actually really appreciated this! I had a fairly decent idea (raised by a single mother), but hearing it in more detail was extremely helpful and I feel more normal about periods now than I did before. I feel like the whole patriarchical view on periods is a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy, women are taught to be shameful of the periods, and thus don't want to talk about them with men, thus men are only talking to other men about periods which leads both misinformation and denormalization.

The thing about patience that QT was struggling with could also be a matter of scale, it is much easier to be patient with someone when the stakes are lower. Her productions are bigger and more intricate than they used to be, that means there is less room for error, simple as that. If you’re losing patience with the waiter because your meal is taking slightly long you might want to be a bit introspective, but if you’re on the set a big production that you are running and participating in and you’ve had to tell someone how to do there job more than once that is totally different

Yo guys I just spoke with my wife about this because I thought this is a ridiculous way to parent your children and apparently secrecy is pretty normal in our country as well. Short story shorter, we're gonna just tell our children when their mom is on her period from a young age, regardless of their gender. She's pretty chill with it, as am I. i also remember the exact date i got my first period, i just looked down, sighed, and reached under the sink to grab one of my older sisters pads. the worst part was the amount of SHAME i felt, like i couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror and just prayed it would go away??? im not sure where the shame came from, maybe it was societal

Ah, I love it when people talk about periods, it's always so refreshing and a dark reminder of what we go through every cycle. During my teens I always used pads but I tried to use a tampon, I felt so dizzy and horrible. Couldn't handle it. So I stuck with pads, and then in my early 20s I tried a menstrual cups, it weirdly reduces my cramps even though I still get horrible cramps. I'm suspected to have Endometriosis and have many different things to manage my constant pelvic pain, plus prescribed painkillers. I use the Ruby cup which is softer silicone that doesn't interfere with my bladder and bowel pain that I get. Ruby cup I recommend for if you are a bit sensitive. Then reusable pads are my bestie on my lighter days 😊

I remember my first period was in 6th grade on December 17th. I was so upset 😭 I'm just glad we learned about it in school tbh, so i knew what was happening when i first got it. My nana would tell me stories about how she was never taught about periods and was traumatized the first time she got hers.

I started mine at 11, told my mom after I fixed everything up. She said okay, my dad was in the room. my mom always talked about pads in my house like getting her some. My dad is chill about it. I tell my brothers everything about women shit and period stuff. This is also very surprising because I come from a first gen immigrant household. Mexicans who are Christians and strict, but periods were something not hidden in my household. my parents did want us to wrap our pads but that's because it smells up the bathroom and it's not the vibes.

My parents and my school definitely kept everything around periods secretive from me (a boy) so when I had female friends with periods I feel like I behaved like such a dumbass about it. Makes me cringe thinking about it now, but I'm glad I ended up learning.

i also had no idea why blood was pouring out of my clam when my first period happened, and this was right before turning 11 so you'd think someone would have given me a heads-up 💀💀 my mom literally just handed me a box of pads and told me they'd happen every month for the rest of my life (which isn't even true 😭) and i never was taught how to use a tampon too, despite being a former volleyball and current hs tennis player. the gross feeling of sweaty and bloody pads during sports is so real :( thank you both for being so open and honest, i look forward to wednesdays every week because of this podcast!!

I think the best thing that happened to me in elementary school was that they made us watch videos about our periods, and I'm pretty sure they told us to get a mirror and look and examine ourselves to learn. but my mom helped the best she could even tho i was so uncomfortable.

I think our parents didn't even realise they were attaching that shame to it simply by giving us small signals like mothers never mentioning their own periods. I'll talk about mine openly now, but I was uncomfortable doing so when I was a kid. I got my period when I was twelve and didn't tell my mum the first time and managed it in really unsafe ways, and I might have kept that up for a while if I hadn't bled on my bedsheets the second time. She never did anything to attach that shame to it, but simply not ever talking about her own periods was enough to teach me that I should be secretive about my own.

Thumbnail is bussin’ as always As a guy whose highschool class was and uni group is around 98% female and it’s in my nature to be very blunt and direct even for european standards, I’ve always discussed these things with the girls. It’s really sad to hear tho, of so many period-related horror stories . Love to see more awareness being spread that this ain’t some alien phenomenon, but a thing every woman has to deal with monthly, so we can make it as safe and as comfortable as possible ASAP ❤

I highy recommend mama dr Jones for period topics! I believe the absolute max for tampons is 8h so you can sleep with one in, but use the smallest size possible for your flow. TSS is rare (about 1 in 100k people) and you can get it from a staph infection or Strep A. About half of all TSS cases are not due to menstruation (Cleveland clinic, "Toxic Shock Syndrome", 2022)
