A date means nothing. Let’s say you buy milk with a use by date of say it had 10 days to go. What if it was left out of cold storage longer than it should, especially after the consumer has bought the milk.What if the refrigeration broke down in say a supermarket,could also change the shelf life.A production date would be better.
If it's bread, and it's expired by only a few days and there's no green mold anywhere on the surface, it goes into my stomach. My elder sister used to complain that I ate her cream breads, but I told her if she wanted to eat those, then eat them before the expiry date. She just loved buying stuff and then forgot about them.
The “sell by” date is pushed by manufacturers to keep products moving on shelves. It’s strictly to their financial gain. Even “use by” dates are pushed by the manufacture to keep products moving faster and thereby increasing their profits. Making a product “go bad” even just one day faster increases profits by the millions.

Have you ever seen the hoarding shows? Granted that the hoarders really do keep spoiled food, but the hosts always insist that everything beyond its sell by date is poisonous.
I sell Chips and Pretzels at the big food stores. I pull the Product a couple days before the sell by/use by date. Guess what. They are still good and I donate it to homeless shelters. Unless the Product is damaged or the seal is opened, they are just fine.

Joel „There are too many variables to do it accurately” No theres not, most countries have requirments for expiration date and the companies have no problem with marking it fairly accurately.
Acidic canned foods and peel off lid cans don't last much past the date, but most things are good for many years after that date. If the can is swollen and there is a long hiss when opening you toss it. There are expired food auctions ;)
I ignore expiration dates and just smell it and look at it. I’ve never gotten sick from eating anything past the expiration date. I used to believe it was actually some sort of sales tactic to make you hurry up and consume the product so you can buy another one.
Oh my god YES. I work for Kroger. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people come to me with something and point at the sell by date- "THIS IS GOING TO EXPIRE IN 3 DAYS, CAN YOU REDUCE THIS??" Then I have to educate them that it is a Sell By date, and its meant as nothing more than a starting point for a product's peak freshness that the store can stand behind- and that it can actually be good for days or weeks after that date or longer, depending on how its stored. Expiration of product is Entirely up to the consumer to decide. A Lot of the product I put out in the bakery is thaw from our freezer and sell, one cake might get 8 days shelf life- but easily be good to eat for up to 16 days before it starts drying out and not as pleasant to eat. If refrigerated it could last a bit longer. We put fruit toppings on some cakes and that shortens their shelf life from 7 days to 3 days as a sliced strawberry on top and quickly go bad- but the cake itself is perfectly good and fresh- just pick the strawberry that isn't so fresh anymore off and add a new one if you want to take it home- at a discount! Some product is fresh prepared in store like some breads and tortillas- left on your counter they may only be good for 4-5 days before going stale or even spots of mold appearing. You can extend their life by refrigerating them and reheating them in a pan on your oven before eating. I can only imagine how many people freak out in their homes and start throwing away anything close to their sell by date.

I look at the food I smell the food and then I taste it and if all three of those pass I go ahead and eat it and yes I've eaten lots of food past the expiration date a while ago I ate eggs that were 6 months old and I did not get sick at all I didn't feel in the least bit different in any way thanks for your comment and have a great day. 😁
I work at a wholesale store and I have to throw away food everyday. 95% of it is still good. I remember one day I threw away around 200 gallons of milk, around 25 gallons of OJ, a couple pounds of meat, a lot of produce and some other packaged food. On a different day, we threw out 80+ of rotisserie chicken. We even throw away icecream cake that was made for a holiday the day after without trying to discounting it or giving it away to employees. It makes me sad that we throw away so much food in the US.
Sometimes H-E-B discounts stuff that’s close to the sell by date for 50% off. The other day I got some shredded cabbage for %50 and I took into consideration that cabbage is a tougher green that lasts a good amount of time in the fridge (unlike spinach) so it was perfectly fine and I used it in chicken tacos.
FYI I once worked in a facility that bottled and bubble packaged medications, vitamins, and supplements. They said that the medications were actually good for one full year past the expiration date printed on the labels. This was to cover their liability on the efficacy of the products.

fearless102 no store bought egg is fresh all commercial eggs are pasteurized. meaning slightly cooked to so called preserve them real fresh eggs are not cooked and there are ways to preservevthem. pickled eggs is just one way mammon did that andvthey were good.
I'm happy I live in a civilized country where expiration dates are mandatory by law and actually indicate the last date the product is ok for consumption. Many products are most likely still good for a bit longer, but it's up to you to judge. It's actually based on science.
I use my nose.I buy food with discount tag on it. If you have a good nose, you know the food is still good. I've used milk and meats after the dates. It's to get you to throw it out and buy more. Use your nose that's way it in front of your face

I found some crisps (🥔 🍟potato chips) in a store cupboard. Walkers (lays) Thai sweet chill sensations over a year from the best before (maybe nearly 1.5years old) I took them, then at a friends house I opened them and told my mate they are out of date. He wouldn't try them and they tasted like new, no loss of crunch or flavour as I bought some more a few weeks later and all tasted the same. There is a lot waste in this world. As a store cannot sell me something out of date and they are going to throw it away. I cannot steal it and have it as it's against the law and a law about bin raiding as well. But if I buy lots of food on the last day when it's reduced they are not going to say " I cannot sell you all that because if you don't use it all it will become waste and someone else might use it" NOPE, THEY JUST SEE £€¥$
There was so much wasted food when I worked in a residential house!!! It’s was so sad because we couldn’t spend their money on food even if they had more then they needed. Could only use their food stamps which made it very hard to stretch on the right foods.
Main thing to remember is none of this applies to Medications prescribed ..example antibiotics...some past a certain date become TOXIC... Always finish a course of antibiotics unless you have a reaction to it, a sensitivity means headache, vomiting, light itching etc... Allergic reactions are life threatening and can be serious itching all over, raised whelts or rope like lines, feeling like your throat is getting irritated or any signs of wheezing that is a life threatening emergency call an ambulance do not attempt to drive your self or have one person drive you..You Need Two...the driver can not do resuscitation breaths and Drive at the same time !!! Call your pharmacist if you stop taking a med and legitimately have left over medication ask specifically does it change chemically over time.. If so ask and write on the bottle toss past xx/xx..!!!! Example..Tetracycline is a med that stored wrong can be very dangerous to use later it can turn toxic. Tylenol and aspirin can be fine years later especially if still sealed. Never Ever Take a med that is discolored, shows signs of being damp at some point.. crumbling apart all signs the med is not suitable to use, unless you find a tin of like baby aspirin and shaken it before you opened it, and even then only if they are the uncoated variety..
Yeah, those are the key ways to check on if a product is good or not, at least with vegetables and fruit. Color, smell, and texture. Taste is a last resort. Dairy is dangerous though, be careful with that.

None of those dates mean a thing if the stores selling these products do not store them properly. Go by your own eyes, and smell. Let's not forget that many of these products have been chemically altered. Now, think if fresh really meant fresh, would it be necessary for this video? I'm 78. I grew up with common sense and expiration dates for food are not sensible. Food goes bad when it goes bad - period. I've seen expiration dates on WATER. Now, hamburger is tricky, but expiration dates don't help. I load up on "manager specials" when meat and stuff is priced at 50% off. Everything in my pantry and fridge is way past any expiration dates. Wise up. They want you to toss perfectly good food to buy more.
My Dad always kept his meds in the refrigerator. It wasn't until I became a nurse I really understood why. As far as meat goes.... Groening up on a farm taught me a lot. Smell and slime is caused by blood in meat. Not saying it's all good by don't just pitch because of it. Take a little and cook it. If it taste funny we tossed it. But just cause it smelled or was a little slimmy, a good wash of cold water took the bacteria of the blood away. Then cook just a biteful and if your still no happy disregard.
If someone can't use their food within 1.5 weeks, then they can't use their food within 4 weeks. It doesn't make a difference. You either pay attention and eat it before it goes bad, or you just don't. I keep a whiteboard on my fridge for everything that expires and when. If I don't do that, even if you give me three months there is going to be something in the back of the fridge that goes bad.
US Military did a 5 year study on medications. Most loose 10-15% potency within 50 years for non liquid, and 20ish years for gel type Meds. Both can last significantly longer of vacuumed sealed.. they estimate maybe hundreds of years
I've bought milk that had a blinky taste, days before the date on the jug. I've bought bread, that was molded in between slices, although the date was still good. Therefore, I usually feed the stuff to my hoarder neighbors cats, on the date on the package.
Milk , the major thing I've noticed is certain brand whole milk tastes like 1% , while others taste like actual whole milk and are creamy. I'm a whole milk lover. 🎶😊

I would like to point out a few inaccuracies in this video as a good microbiology specialist here. First and foremost, expiration dates are backed in science. I don’t know how you guys do things in the USA but here in Canada, the industry send their food products and drinks to laboratories in order to test its bacterial charges (food isn’t a sterile product most times), organoleptic compound (taste, smell) and chemical properties (ph, viscosity, allergen or dangerous substances). This information is then used by the companies to establish the limit at which the product’s bacterial charge does not exceed a certain mandated limit which could affect the food’s composition and taste. Does it automatically mean that it’s unsafe? No, but it garanti that the microorganisms present within the products has altered the structure of this product and may be unsafe for consumption. Basically, beyond this point, the quality of the product can not be garanties by the manufacturer. Secondly, a smell test is not an accurate method to detect microorganisms in a product. Most viruses and bacteria can be odourless and tasteless which is why companies sends their products periodically to laboratories for constant monitoring of their products and equipments in order to avoid a crisis. Yes, smelling it can be an indication if microbial activities if those bacteria have broken down compounds inside the food which release a rancid smell but that’s not always the case depending on which microorganism is present in your product. Lastly, different guidelines seems to be the real problem here and to be honest, a unified ruling system would be far more efficient than to inaccurately say that expiration dates are not based in science. There’s a full industry behind quality control and food safety which test millions of products on the daily simply to ensure that you don’t get intoxicated by the food you ingest. Yes the milk here in Philippines you can consume the milk 7 days after you open it but I used it more than 7 days and still safe no bad odor or changing color same with yogurt😊
Obviously you've never been snowed in for a week at a time or had to live in the aftermath of a hurricane or major ice storm. Anyone with a brain keeps at least two full weeks of extra food in the house. It adds up when there are 3 or 4 people in the family.

Correct. Serious punishments can be given to local supermarkets for having products which are past their expiration dates. Sometimes it's really a shame, some good quality products are thrown out just because of those dates. Granted, a efforts are made to recycle some of that for things like food banks.
I saw an interesting documentary about that a while back. Apparently part of the reason manufacturers chose a shorter expiration date for canned goods is that people more often got skeptical of products that had (in their mind) unusually long shelf life.

The reason companies use a expiration date that doesnt actually mean its expired is to save there own ass from being sued if someone actually got sick before the use by date. It makes sense if you think about it. Why take a consumer risk with consumers when you can avoid it all together by having an expiration date before the product turns bad.

I just go by smell because I can't count how many times I bought milk or salads and they go really bad long before their best by date. I bought some milk once and it went bad the very next day. and the date on the jug was ten days later. talk about a bloody waste of money and another trip to the fkn store

Not refrigerated or frozen properly being the most likely. And you can’t tell till you attempt to use it or it only lasts a day after it’s opened because of that! It happens WAY too often! I hate those dates. And I hate stuff that says it is fully cooked but says you have to have it at a certain temperature for a certain amount of time. I just buy stuff where the expiration date is like a month or two away and cook the shit out of it. Or you can have a bloody steak or anything you want and just drink a lot of alcohol with it and that will keep you safe. Then if you do get sick you are like well it could of been the booze or the food or a tumor, who the hell knows? Some people die from eating salad or getting a whiff of a peanut from a hundred feet away, you could die from starvation or die from obesity, you can't fucking win.

The supermarket I work at often donates some good products which have gone past the expiration date to food banks. Carefully checking to ensure their quality is still good enough for consumption.
