Michael Jordan was one of the best trash talkers in NBA History and it was never a good idea to get into a war of words with him. Here's a video of a couple guys who learned that lesson the hard way.
Jordan: "The psychologist told me to stop taking everything personally..........and it became personal with me" ESPN: Jordan plays a pick up ball game and a card game at the same time with his psychologist, beats him in 10 hands of poker and beats him in 1 on 1.
It's going to be different for everyone. But for MJ it was about being perfect, and proving to everyone he was as close as it gets when it comes to basketball.
One thing they left out about the Labradford Smith story is that when Mike was later asked why Smith's comments upset him so much, Mike revealed that Smith had never said that. He made it up to motivate himself in his head.
MJ’s “Personal” Hit List 1:22 The Pistons 1:36 Clyde Drexler 3:22 LaBradford Smith 4:20 Charles Barkley 4:37 Jerry Krause 4:53 Dan Majerle 5:49 Horace Grant 6:20 Orlando Magic 6:55 George Karl 7:47 Karl Malone 9:27 BJ Armstrong 10:22 Indiana Pacers 10:58 Bryon Russell
@@bowmanencore KD would hide behind his burner accounts. Kawhi not saying anything but still gets torched 50 points. PG won't dare to say "That's a bad shot". Giannis would just smile but gets dunks on every other possession.
I took it personal the first time he retired, I was a kid. I stared out my window for like an hour, just thinking about the NBA with no more Michael. But then he came back and gave us 3 more championships and the best run in NBA history. I forgave him after that.
Dude, same. Being a kid and thinking we would never see Jordan play again, it’s pretty much impossible to contextualize that for people who weren’t there. No human I can think of has been a cultural icon to the level he was since him. Babe Ruth, Elvis, and The Beatles. Those are his only comps in my mind, and he probably tops them all.
Michael Jordan was the most cold blooded killer…..maybe in the history of sports. It’s me and I get mine and you get nothing. If you threaten what’s mine, I’ll cut your head off to take it. THIS is the separation between Jordan and any other player in NBA history. Between the killer instinct, the incredible skill and the work ethic….no one comes close. Its Jordan…..a big gap….and then whoever else you want to lump behind him.
@@wisethabrain1100 It was in Boston when he hung 63 points on one of the greatest teams of all time and had Larry Bird calling him God disguised as Michael Jordan. Got any other stupid questions?
I love Mike's face when he's like oh, ok that's how we gonna play it. You can tell he wasn't joking. In his mind he really is taking this stuff personal. The mentality of a killer!
Pippen to Malone before he missed those 2 free throws: "The Mailman doesn't deliver on Sunday." That was game was played on a Sunday. The best trash talk line of all time in my opinion.
It’s actually insane how big a role his mentality played in his game, one of the main reasons why he’s one of the best players to ever play a team sport
This Michael at his most dominate. Because NO ONE was going to have bragging rights against him not even for a night. THAT was his mentality. Tell me again how LeBron is better than Jordan at 4-6 all time in the Finals.
Shaq did the same thing with David Robinson. Shaq made up some kind of story about how as a teenager Robinson snubbed an autograph request from him. Robinson was such a nice guy Shaq had to completely fabricate a story just to hate him lol
All I could think about watching this was the SNL skit they did with MJ in the locker room getting competitive with the security staff. Hysterical! I love his competitive fire!
MJ “You are calling me the GOAT and not the King of Kings or God? That’s how you are going to play it? Fine-no problem! Now they were on my list. Ever since then It became personal to me.
GOAT.. There will never be another Jordan. He played in the toughest time in the NBA. NBA is filled with weak players and game. I was a Knick fan and hated on him in the 90's but I was a low key fan of his. Jordan you are the best!!
It's pretty simple why MJ took everything personally - he was so mentally sure that he was greatest player in the NBA and was that much better than everyone else that he viewed even the slightest challenge to the contrary as motivation to remind people of that fact.
I would say the opposite. He was so threatened that anything and anyone was a threat to his greatness that he took everything personally and everyone as an enemy. I’d argue insecurity was his greatest motivator
@@Khower2 Did you really say the opposite? Sounds almost exactly what I said. Of course he did it out of insecurity, the insecurity that anyone would doubt his greatness. Every great achiever is driven by some sort of insecurity.
@@IceveinsProductions You framed it as a source of strength, the other guy had to be negative. Sorry, but its the nature of competition. He didn't hurt no one, he didnt rob no one. He earned the right to be in the running for the GOAT. Proved he was warrior in the fires. period.
There is a rush or high when you dominate another. Michael got a rush out of dominating other players on the Court. Real Alpha Wolf kind of Mentality. I know that "Alpha" gets thrown around too much. However it 100% fits MJ
Tell whatever you want about Jordan, but it takes a lot of practice and discipline to channel your hatred for productive activities and actually not loose it. Exceptional ambition from this man nay legend.
So true, I fell in love with the game when I was a kid in the late 80's. Man those were some magical times and I knew there would never be an era like that again.
@@brettpilkington9539 yes yes. Out of all of sporting history, it was just your era that was good. Not like every older generation has called the younger generation lesser (lazy, entitled, spoiled, soft) throughout all of human history. Old good new bad. Upvotes plz.
@@panikk2 If you think being a multi millionaire at age 18 doesn't change the dynamic of a sport you are delusional. Social media also has certain players thinking they are a brand over being a player. It still is my era, I'm only in my early 30s so it's not even about that, I didn't even start watching football until the late 90s. People in general are more entitled nowadays and it's even more extreme with athletes who have mansions whilst still a teen.
Gotta respect MJ's passion and fury he had for the game. Did whatever he had to do to be the best in an era of the league where everyone seemed to be gunning for him.
If I was a defensive player assigned to guard Jordan I would be saying nothing but positive things like great shot MJ, you're the best MJ, you're amazing MJ... Yeah he would have dropped 90 on me but that goodwill gesture would have allowed me to keep him under 3 digits.
One of the most crucial parts of MJ's personality is: your motivation motivates me. That's why he was unstoppable, along with his undisputed talent, work ethic etc. that many players had, but it's his unique mindset that distinguish him from every other player that played the game...ever.
I’ll never forget watching that shot against the Cavs in the playoffs. There were 7 or 8 of us watching the game as kids and we all simultaneously jumped in the air cheering as it when in. To win the series too, not just the game. So clutch
"that's ok.. fine, no problem." is epic because that's where Michael is so ready to prove himself. Not interested in chat, "enough talk, let's do this."
Of his era... agreed... of all time? I tend not to even use that term because every 10 years basket ball changed. Its not fair to compare wilt to Jordan becuz in wilts day those guys weren't playing the D they were in the 90's and to compare lebron to Jordan isn't fair becuz they play 0 Def in today's era. I just call ppl goat of their respective era's. Tmac kobe vince Carter Allen Iverson d wade are example of 00's goats kawaii Lillard harden Durant curry are 10's etc etc every decade has an amazing goat but it isn't fair to compare the stats because rules and atmosphere of the game changed
As a Knick fan, I was rooting for Utah and then Mike just laid out that cold sweeping stop and pop, ending it. God bless him, he was so dedicated and this last frame showed how he prepared. MJ, damn GOAT!
His shot is just so graceful and perfect only Kobe came close to matching how mechanically perfect you can shoot a basketball. He can be on the move and going all kinds of ways but when he shoots, his brain goes into this mode where the release has to be so soft and so perfect there’s no way it’s not going to go in. That’s why he was the king of game winning shots. Man I miss these days. 90’s and early 2000’s basketball is my all time favorite.
His mental toughness is what makes him the best player ever. Kobe is a distant second and LeFraud James is third. Those top two just played with a chip on their shoulder to show how good they are. It was unfortunate that all 3 didn’t play together close to their primes.
It is crazy to think that MJ could break an NBA finals record for a shot he rarely took just because of something that was said a few days before. Greatness unleashed.
the thing is; besides being a great athlete, michael needed that motivation. If not, he would have found something else. staying at the top is much more difficult than getting to the top. especially for unrivaled athletes like michael jordan. no one was able to get him off the top until he left.
Watching these games as a kid you really didn't understand what was going on behind the scenes. It was just really good athletes getting after each other. Now I'm watching Jordan mentally destroy people on the court because he saw them using their dinner fork on their salad.
Marion: “Trash talks Bron while being down 1-2 in the Finals”... Bron: “I took it personal by scoring 8 points against jj barea in Game 5 and losing the series”...
@@kristion9774 Yeah that's pretty much true. I remember seeing that live and now that I'm watching some games again, I'm getting those memory banks back. That's true tho they were getting abused
I watched game 2 , 1991, recently. That game was so good and really showcased the nba game I miss. Jordan didn't have an exceptional game. I think 30 points or so... but the game was physical. I wish they would get rid of the 3pt line. I try to watch basketball now and can't take it. Shoot a 3... no problem if you miss, you'll have another shot in like 12 seconds. The other team will shoot a 3, 6 secs after you do. Extremely boring.
George Karl himself said after that he intentionally didn't speak to Michael ... cuz he didn't want Michael playing psychological games with him going into the Finals. Welp ..... that idea backfired.
If LeBron played in the 90s and media compared him to Jordan, we all know Jordan will take it extremely personal. It’s a good thing for LeBron he plays now.
Problem is, lebron isnt clyde drexler and actually on jordan's level in terms of skill and talent, jordan might be psychologically tougher but thats a different story.
His level in the game of basketball both mentally and physically was just way above others, the IQ level, skills and the artistry of his game was one of a Kind! My all time GOAT MJ!
