I am very impressed with her ability in spoken English. Seems to me she's a really strong learner for anything she puts her mind into. I truly believe she can improve her skating skills studying under Brian Orser. Can't wait to see her next season.
Yes, comparing to other foreign skaters and herself a few years ago, Zhenya's spoken English has improved leaps and bounds and what's wrong with giving her a little compliment as a strong learner? I wasn't even born in an anglo-saxon country myself and I sure know how difficult it is for people with foreign tongues to master spoken English. That's why I know and appreciate Zhenya's extra effort. It's more like YOU were assuming and have not seen enough of the world outside of anglo-saxon countries, not me. So narrow-minded!
@@ramitodevioletas575 You’re the dumbest person I know lmfao. Its about how she’s determined and how fast she’s learning English. Especially since she’s been skating her whole life and barely learning English growing up.
I wonder if she was advised not to mention Yuna Kim when she was in Russia, due to the Sochi controversy. Interesting to hear her say "I can now say that..."
I cannot believe my favorite skater right now just mentioned Yuna kim as her idol. I can now die in peace. She looks so happy, i'm hoping for nothing but good things for her in the future. I might get to see her skate for the first time in France this fall at the Internationaux de France yeay
same!!! I’m not fond of her technique and I think yuna Kim is better than her but I just love evgenia. I hope she improves her jumping technique while training in Canada and id love to see her grow
i don't get why people are so mad that she switched coaches. it's common in figure skating. skaters and coaches have a contract-- outside of that contract they do not owe each other anything. as a canadian, if one of our top girls went to train elsewhere, why should i care so long as she still competes for canada? it's not a betrayal at all. it's a career choice. anyway, salt aside! she looks like she's doing well and i hope she and brian do some great work getting rid of that pesky flutz. then her artistry can shine properly without the technical problem to distract from it. all the best and can't wait to see her destroy the competition at skate canada in october!!!
it is way different in Russia. For in Russia these girls pay *nothing*: the State provides everything, they only have to work hard and hard and hard (that goes to Ballet and rhythmic gymnastics as well). She started training with Eteri at a very young age and you could see a kind of "bond" between the two of them at every competition. But after the Games there was no room for Evgenia in Eteri's world, and tbh, Eteri seems quite tacky, right before Evgenia broke the news about her moving to Canada to train with Orser, Eteri started disclosing private information about Evgenia... I believe she has a long career ahead
People are not mad. Evgenia herself said in an interview after the Olimpics that she'd stay with Etery, no doubt. After that she just vanished for her without saying anything and ending any contracts, and Etery knew about her leaving only from TV. The head of the skating center said that Evgenia stays at this center but with another coach. And only after there were roumors about Brian. It's not nice, or it is? But you are right, it must be good for her career, and they both will manage after all .
This girls seems like such a sweetheart and I've noticed that her English has become even better of the last couple of months. Can't wait to see how Evgenia grows as an athlete and a person over these next few years.
She speaks good English.....It seems that anglosaxons think that there are two people in the world. English speakers and no English speakers. It is absurd.
JAVIER ROSADO CUBO Yeahhhhh No. We’re responding to her English because she’s being interviewed in English and speaking English. She trains in Ontario, with an English-speaking staff. Sooooo that’s the interest in her language skills.
JAVIER ROSADO CUBO um well technically speaking, everyone on Earth is either an English speaker or a non English speaker. Either you can speak English or you can’t. People take an interest in Evgenia’s foreign language abilities because she’s given interviews in English since shortly after she came on the scene, around age 15 or so, and mentioned before that she was working to learn it and has never shied away from attempting to answer questions in English. It demonstrates the same confidence, work ethic, and commitment to learning and improving that she displays with her skating. It shows that this is who she is as a person. Many (or most) Russian and Japanese figure skaters cannot speak English so it’s just interesting. She seemed to understand from a young age that learning English would be beneficial to her career and open up doors for her that might not have been available otherwise. The fact she’s now training in Canada with Orser would seem to be proof of that.
Something about the way she answered makes me think that the federation didn’t want her talking about Yuna Kim. When she used to train in Russia, she used to say the skater that inspired her most was Evgeni Plushenko. Now she says it’s Yuna. Interesting.
I think there was a big thing by the officials to usurp Yuna as the greatest of all time (or at least in the current era) with Evegnia. Add to that the Yuna and Sotnikova scandal. SO Yuna's name was taboo.
People don't like it because it's slow and block-y with bad technique, shallow edges, limited extensions, ruched choreography and a lot of pantomime- yet is scores really well against those with better skills. However, I think it can be fixed with the right coaching so we are interested to see what improvements are going to be made with the change. Most people are fed up with Eteri's skating factory and are on Evegnia's side.
Same, I'm not a fan of her skating too. It's not a matter of bad technique or overscoring, it's simply because I don't like her style of skating. I don't know how to explain really. I'm a fan of Yuzu but I also like Nathan's skating. I don't like Nathan getting overscored, but I like his skating. Did I make it more confusing? I'll just put it this way: I just like what I like. XD With that said, I like Medvedeva as a person. I'm more interested on her interview videos than her skating videos. I don't think I'll ever be her fan, but I won't be her basher either.
I knew that she was working well with Brian given the great little improvements we've seen from recent ice shows...but its happy to see her emotionally well and happy in Toronto. Ive never been her biggest fan, watched her in juniors and liked her but dang...this will make a BIG comeback story if she really does fix her technique, there already is some imporvements! You go Evgenia, never rooted for you so much in my life!!
She's not one of those "classic" russian sportgirls wearing super fancy atires, jewelry, and uploading pictures of her travels and her LV Bags and all that crap. She's just down to earth and super hyper cool. Cannot wait to see her new programs
Evgenia, welcome to Toronto and Canada. Your choice of new coach is both smart and courageous. You demonstrate not only you are figure skating major champion but you are a full adult in control of your destiny. Some small people in Russia have called you a 'traitor'. First, you continue to skate for Russia and you are in fact devoting major sacrifice by training abroad to bring glory to Russia. A true patriot. Second, Eteri have failed you and it is time for you to leave. After 11 years with her she failed to deliver Olympic Gold for you (by one lousy point) because she has mismanaged everything. Despite Alina extreme technical but backloaded free skate (produced by Eteri, illegal from now on) you matched her score exactly due to your equally extreme artistry and wonderful execution. Both are golden skates. To many of your fans your Olympic medal has the look of your amazing rose-gold skates. John Wilson Blades agree! You said your idol is Yuna Kim, who is a product of the Brian Orser team. By 2022 you will match your idol and go down in history. But be careful not to injure yourself.
She is so charming. Her English is very impressive. I look forward to seeing how her work with Orser materializes. I think she’ll be even more outstanding under his direction
1:15 I totally understand that. I'm from Poland and I moved to the Netherlands to study and omg people are always happy and it took me a while to understand that "How are you?" is just a part of the greeting and I shouldn't answer with the whole story of my day.
dkarwowska Why is that so weird for you guys? I live in Netherland and i also lived in Russia. In Russia people also ask how you re doing when greeting you., dont they? Or in Poland?
Im Dutch and that's very true. I've been to Poland and Hungary once and I was confused by how 'moody' everybody looked. I knew that there were cultural differences, but it was really weird to see haha :)
I love this girl because she is really natural, very funny, but really mature too. She is sooo talented on the ice and she feels very harder the musics of her prestations ! And the choregraphies are beautiful ! (Sorry if my english is not always perfect, I'm french). She is my favourite figure skater ever !
I applaud her for starting fresh with a new coach. She's so dedicated to the sport, and she's got balls because Russians rarely train outside Russia, but she knows it's best for her. With Zagitova and all the Russian juniors with quads coming up, she knows Eteri won't have time for her. Supposedly many Russians see her as a "traitor" but I just think she's doing what's best for her career, especially after her falling out with Eteri. Keep going, Zhenya! You're a beautiful skater and I know you'll thrive with Brian Orser!
Zhenya, wish you all the best in Toronto, good friends, positive life and succesful training. Thank you for all the hardwork for Russia. You are a talented daughter of our country. Wish you win the next olympic gold for Russia. We love you)
I used to not care too much for her then I started watching many of her English interviews and I fell in love with her warm and friendly personality! I think it's rather telling that she says her close friends do not speak Russian! My hope is she comes back stronger than ever and is able to put together a very mature, athletic and emotional program that will blow everyone away, including Zagitova! I wish her the best, always! 💚💜
I’m really proud of her for taking the risky path and changing coaches. I think that was the best choice for her. She’s such an amazing and beautiful skater and I can’t wait to see how brain helps her skating! ❤️
Guys, thank you so much for such positive comments! Your words are full of love to Jenya 💕 Here in Russia a lot of people call her a betrayer only because she left her previous trainer Eteri Tutberidze. Thanks for supporting💕💕💕
Ирина Ирина i think the way it happened was wrong , poorly handled by both sides, but as eteri is the older and also more adult person she should not have acted like she did. In the end its the fact that eteri does not train girls that transitioned from a teenie to an adult. So evgenia knew that, she also knew that with alina and those juniors getting older eteri would have less and less time for her so as skating is her life and passion she decided to do the thing that would give her a chance to stay in this sport . Change trainer, and she changed to someone who trains adults more or less
Ирина Ирина A lot of Russian society should take a look in the mirror and think hard if all they need is one issue to turn against their own daughter, especially one who has brought so much home, one who did so much to even make sure Russian athletes could participate in the Olympics.. That issue again is so stupid. Yes, it was dramatic and could have been handled much better, but she is the one who behaved professionally in public. And this 'issue' is a very common one. An athlete can change coach anytime they want and she wants to grow and have a long career something Eteri is not known to give. It is a natural decision in the sports world. How the bloody hell is this 'betrayal'?!
I agree. But Eteri's attitude, you know, bitching about her, "she wanted me to keep Alina as a junior" bla bla, c'mon! she's the adult. She can be one of the best coaches out there but she needs tons of class.
I am her big fan and i am so happy to see Zhenya's a few achievements in Toronto. Of course, it seems difficult, but i know that she will win the olympics. She is so hardworking, cheerful and incredible ice-skater.#goZhenya! i wish her good luck
I love her! I love to watch her skating, and I’m so impressed with her taking charge of her career. All the people writing her off because she had a bad Grand Prix season after coming back from injury and making such a huge change in her life with the live to Canada, just you wait! She’ll be back at the top, I’m sure of it.
Evgenia, you are practicing at ' Toronto Cricket Club', but I'm sure you don't understand a little bit of that sport. Just like I don't understand the rules & scoring system of figure skating 😁. If you ever get interested in 'cricket' kindly ask me about the game cause you won't see a bigger cricket fan than me who also is a fan of yours ☺. Good luck for the future skating events Evgenia !
It’s too early to be jumping for joy here. Zhenya has a lot of adjusting and work in front of her. Immigration is one of the most difficult things to do in life!
I think Toronto was good for a Zhenyas life. But the worldwide pandemic changed everything for her this season and now she's back home weather coach of 11 years. Good luck to Zhenya no matter what she does.
Искусственные улыбки и дежурный вопрос "How are you?" будут вызывать раздражение.
She does seem like a very sweet, kind, young lady. She’s got a big future in front of her. Hoping her skating will improve while she’s in Canada. Proud of her for getting away from Eteri. That lady was evil.
She is trying to look confident but still looks a little bit frightened. I hope that her decision wasn't a mistake and that this new "quiet" world won't become *too quiet* if you know what I mean
To be fair, she is giving an extended interview in a language she isn't fluent or even particularly comfortable in and trying to be diplomatic and respectful to her federation at the same time. Of course she looks a little bit frightened.
Yes, you're right and I respect her as a person anyway. But I didn't speak about the fear of how to look before the camera and answering the questions in foreign language. I meant the fear (uncertainty) of the future in the sport. It seems to me that she somehow disappointed of what she discovered there, though it is only my opinion, I hope that I'm wrong
Merylist I think her very reason for being there has put her a bit on edge. Let's be honest, she's there because she knows Eteri would have cast her aside with Zagitova and the Russian juniors, especially Trusova, coming up. There's no way she would have gotten her full attention. Brian Orser, on the other hand, seems pretty dedicated to all his skaters. He has a great track record and many of them have won World and Olympic medals. Point being, I can see why she's a little nervous about it. She had a pretty dramatic falling out with Eteri, and on Russian national television no less. She's starting fresh and that's scary for anyone, including elite skaters.
I love her so much! She's so happy !! I don't know why people would call her a traitor? She never said she was changing Nationality, it's business just training to add to her skills, so what? She's such a sweet person and I really admire and respect her decision😄😄😄😄 She's my favorite Russian skater
