Thanks for asking the question about Javi. I was wondering how his absence would change things. Brian's accomplishments are hard to number, as a skater and as a coach, but the productive, competitive fellowship between Yuzu and Javi, under his auspices, was one of a kind for this sport. Watching close friendship produce such fantastic competitive skating seems like a once in a lifetime experience for us as fans. Brian has a lot to be proud of.

The relationship between Brian and Javier and Hanyu is NOT one of a kind in this sport….maybe possibly within Men’s skating only ….but not the sport as a whole. There are many groups of skaters and coaches that have a very competitive training life while being great friends. The Gadbois Center in Montreal that MarieFrance Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon have created is the exact same ….which included the best of the best in Ice Dancing ~ Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir ( retired) and Madison Hubble/Zach Donohue and Papadakis/Cizeron, and Chock/Bates and Hawayek/Baker and Fear/ Gibson….well basically the top ten Ice Dancing teams in the world all train together and they are all fiercely competitive against each other while being very good friends and continue to support each other. The Virtue and Moir vs Papadakis and Cizeron at the ‘18 Olympics was one of skating’s biggest rivalries and they were sharing the same coaches and rink….that However is becoming the norm in skating….there are meccas of the event….Toronto for particularly men’s skating under Brian Orser, And let’s not forget that Jason Brown trains with Brian now as well ( along with Tracy Wilson, renowned Ice Dancer with partner Rob McCall) Montreal is the Mecca of Ice Dancing with coaches Lauzon and Dubreuil and for Pairs the Mecca seems to be Tamara Moskavina in Russia ( who’s former pairs partner is Alexei Mishin, who in his own right is a great Pairs coach)….there are no coaches for females in the US who have multiple top level skaters …Mariah Bell for example has Nathan Chen’s coach, Rafael Arutyunyan ( and now Adam Rippon) anyway…..my point is made~ which is that the relationship between Brian and Javier/Hanyu is absolutely not one of a kind in the sport……and as Brian is actually a friend of mine I don’t say this in a negative way towards him because he’s doing an incredible job and has built a wonderful club/training center.

Brian touches on the skating being sort of ignored by skating fans, because jumps have become the “big thing”. And yes, the jumps can be exciting. But it’s called figure skating, not jump skating. Frankly, I would rather see only a couple of jumps, and focus on the actual skating quality. Yuzu’s Notte Stellata gala performance is the epitome of what figure skating should look like. It was mesmerizing. And he performed 1 delayed axel, and one triple axel. I’d love to see more emphasis on skating quality.

What Brian and his team accomplished with TCC will go down in history as one of the best eras in ice skating ever. He manages to grow athletes from completely different countries, small and unknown ones or countries with huge ISU influence, into world and olympic champions. He knows when patience is needed, when he needs to be firm or take a step back. Each of his athletes is unique and ticks differently, yet he knows exactly what they need to blossom and become better. Just watching him train Yuna, and then the way he handles Javier and Yuzuru, now Junhwan and Zhenya and Jason... he really is an amazing coach, someone to look up to for all coaches and athletes in the world.

I'm pretty sure it was Javi who introduced her to Orser if you look at the friendship they built. Anyway, I'm positive that this change was necessary. I think otherwise she would have ended up like Julia Lipnitskaya or Adelina Sotnikova: As a forgotten Champion. She will not be the only one leaving Eteri. Look at Zagitova, since she is growing up she is not able to adjust her technique. The same will happen to the youngsters such as Trusova. I'm so scared for the little girls jumping quads, they are not aware of how this will affect their health.
@sabcode-dd

I will like Eteri is so strict with the way she trains skaters. She has a set formula for training to win but in the midst of them ignores bad habits that can be developed as long as they don't get in the way of a win. She couldn't accept that yve doesn't believe she can't being her gold to Olympics, or more like can't accept the lack of belief for her carefully thought out formula.

Brian is such a good coach, so happy that Yuzu is with him. Have a good teacher means so much for a student, and you can see the results, Yuzu still skates with passion. It seems Brian’s student all have the passion for skate, they are competitive,but calm, not like some skaters afraid to see the coach’s angry face when they don’t get a good score. Maybe, for many of them the value is only scores and medal, but Brian seems different, he works with heart and take care of his skaters. Thank you Brian

I really like his priorities of quality and loving the sport. There have been so many Russian phenom girls that have come but have quickly gone due to burnout and such. It’s great when there’s longevity. He has Hanyu who has repeated as Olympic champion, and even if he didn’t repeat as gold medalist, it’s very telling that he was around for another Olympics.

I hope Zhenya will be strong to defeat the growing pains. I remember Lu Chen-the 2 times Olympic bronze medalist and world champion in lady single back in 80-90’s said, she was happy to get her second Olympic medal and that was so hard she burst into tears. After she became the world champion, she found herself not being able to perform simple elements let alone difficult jumps. She said that it was like all the skills and abilities eluded her and she could not get them back. Her coach did not help her (at that time Chinese coach was probably not knowledgeable comparing with what they do today), it was only herself worked through that tearful years and herself did not give up that she medaled at the Olympic for the second time. And she said years later she learnt that what she went through was called “growing pain from a girl to a woman’s body’. She did not know then and no one told her that then. So it will be Zhenya herself not to give up. It will be a treat to see her again in Beijing Olympic.

Honestly most skaters who are “ starting out” don’t get Brian Orser as a coach and that’s particularly because it’s very very expensive to have a skating coach of that caliber ….but also because most skaters who go to clubs/training centers like this have a coach who is one of 10-15 that work under Brian. Also~ about 65-70% of kids skating in clubs across the US don’t compete….not all skaters like competing and often , as was in my day of skating, the coaches chose the skaters who got to compete. Brian has the top level skaters but even Jason Brown’s coach -who is technically Brian Orser- is Tracy Wilson. Brian will spend time with all the higher level junior/senior skaters and maybe a couple of times a month go coach lower levels like Novice but it’s incredibly expensive to have this level of a coach and kids who are “ starting out” would not have him for a daily coach. I would guess that Brian probably charges $ 150.00/15 min lessons so a couple of hundred for 30-45 mins mins or $ 400-500 a week …per student….Skaters like Yuzuru or Javier are amateurs as in not allowed to make money off their skating….so they do get to have advertising but it’s very controlled . Figure Skating is one of the most expensive sports ….when I was skating ( from age 4-24 in the 80’s and 90’s) when I got to my highest level in Pairs my skates alone cost $900 because they were specifically made for me in San Francisco (SP-Teri’s) and then the blades separately cost $ 700-800 and I went thru a pair of boots a year. The club fees can be very expensive especially for a place like Brian Orser’s training center, then you pay for Coaches fees, test fees, separate ice time if needed, competition fees, and then the costs of the costumes, a separate fee for the choreographer, a fee for the mixer etc etc….so my point is that the average kid in the US or Canada who is “ starting out” would not be coached by Brian Orser….BUT yes it would be amazing.

First, thanks Jackie. You are an excellent interviewer and you know your stuff. The reputation of Brian Orser is legendary; this interview only reinforce it. No need for me to say anything. Lovely Evgenia is going through her most epic transition. She has immense courage but she need the best help in the world in order to make it. Only Brian Orser can do this job. Yes, I said 'only'. Evgenia is one lucky girl. Because she need to learn how to lose, a most painful exercise, but Brian will make her exercise and sacrifice a winner. It hurts me to see equally lovely Alina Zagitova performance at Russian national just finished. What happened? Injury, pressure, etc.? My take: the new ISU rules is breaking Eteri methods, and beginning to break her students. Let's remember how Eteri being the only coach who exploited the previous rules to the very max much to the disapproval of many. That exploitation is key to her Olympics results, and Evgenia departure. ISU troubled by this exploitation enough to change the rules. This mean trouble for Eteri. No trouble for Orser. Only a Brian Orser can tell a two-time World champion, Olympic Silver and a whole bunch of gold medals: You are human, not super human. It is the best words for Evgenia. And the best repudiation of Eteri. I look forward for Evgenia to be a super-star, but very human.

@elizezuma
@elizezuma 3 года назад
Yuzu said after PyeongChang that he be ready to actually skate for himself and enjoy skating (being relieved of the pressure after all those years). So brian probably meant that yuzu’s aura or something changed.

Owww i absolutely adore Brian. It was touching to watch him supporting Eugenia. I think they will be able to reveal Eugenia and soon we will see new elements in her programs and a new technique. I believe that experience, passion, sensuality, awareness will prevail over the youth and jumping ability of the new generation of figure skaters. They need some more time to understand and feel each other.

It is rare that a great sportsman or sportswoman make a great coach. Here in his second element is Brian Orser, his manner and his wonderful insights are a credit to him. Long may he continue to do what he loves doing by passing on his knowledge, experience and philosophy to other champions. Well done Brian.

brian's way of coaching is something that stands out everytime, it's unique but it's also of such high quality that many can't replicate. and i love the community, the family, like brian said, that they've built in TCC, it's something that should be in the sport more and i'm glad to see the athletes have such good relationships with each other

Thank you so much! Such a good interview! It answered a whole row of my questions and have such a good insight of what's currently going on or HAS been going on. I was really curious about Brian's attitude as Yuzu got injured ahead of the Olympics. And I got even more curious about it as Yuzu returned to the ice and showed both: another mindset and dedication to quality & expression as well as that subtly dangerous streak. Things unfortunately endinv up in following that perception and him getting injured again. I was wondering how good his chances are to overcome that tendency and further repetitions. So I really wanted to know more about how their team is set and if I can spot people around him capable of giving him answers to his question of "Why!?". It was good to know what role Brian does AND DOESN'T play in that recovery process. Gives me great arguments for the next time someone thinks it necessary to blame him for things he was little influence on :'D. I really like his overall approach to his students and needs. And his honesty. How he doesn't claim to have answers to everything and is aware of being just another human figuring things out step by step as they turn up. Thank you very much for sharing this interview. For asking the right questions and creating the right atmosphere to get good answers.

The interviewer only focusing on Yuzuru and Medvedeva...good thing Brian mentioned Jason too....sometimes you need to focus on more than just the "big stars", there are other skaters as well out there.
@XimenaSu1609
@XimenaSu1609 5 лет назад
In Jackie’s (the interviewer) defense, Brian has said in many interviews that he is not in charge when it comes to Jason, unlike Yuzuru, Evgenia and Junhwan. He has said he rejected him at first but Tracy asked him to reconsider and he agreed on the condition that she would be his main coach, not Brian. So I guess it makes sense for Jackie to focus on them. But it was very nice of Brian to include him when he speaks :)

I can't help but think that Russia (or at least Eteri) is setting up young female skaters to fail. They put so much pressure on them to peak at the age of 15, that when their bodies suddenly change, or a newer generation comes by, they find themselves not able to keep up. Some either loose hope (like Alina Zagitova), or plateau. Evegenia made a really smart decision to train in another country, and the fact that she did so proves her love of skating.
