i hear ya man. I got my Wolfgang at the beginning of the year, and it came in perfect condition, no issues except the typical floppy trem arm thats common with the 1000s. But its just got this mojo about it, hard to put a finger on. Eddie knew his stuff. Great vid.
Great video! If you like the 8’s I’d recommend trying the EB zippy slinky’s which are 7’s. I moved to 7’s from 8’s a while ago and love them even more! Effortless playing and a really valences tone from string to string. All the best!
I had a guitar-maker friend relic my EVH 5150 to look more like Eddie's. Now it looks like it's been through hell and buried in the dirt for years, and it's just perfect. I also removed the D-Tuna (never used it and it doesn't look right), replaced the micro tuners with brass ones, added a Kramer sticker to the headstock, and put eye-hooks in place of the traditional strap holders. The EVH 5150 is my favorite guitar to play, and not just because of the paint job. So I also bought a non-striped 5150 in Ice Blue Metallic, for when I want the playability of the 5150 without shouting "I'M A HUGE VAN HALEN FAN!!!"
Thanks for this very useful review ! I have a Kramer The 84 and they look both similar. I am thinking about making a little paint job on it ... The bridge on the Kramer 84 is a FR 1000RT ... I found the same faults as you. It does not feel like an original Floyd Rose but it stays in tune well. I've asked to you what strings do you use in another video comments ... I have my answer here ! Thanks ! Just a question, I have a Line 6 Pod Go Wireless , do you think your Custom Tones could be installed on it ? Thanks again for your great job ! I am new to your channel and I have a lot of content to see 🥳
It's hard to understate how good these things are in real life; I built a kit and was snobbish about the EVH version until I played it...and boy is it a sharp instrument!
Hello, I was wondering what Allen key set and holder you got for your guitar. I always dreamed of having the ultimate EVH rig one day, and the holder might come in handy one day for the guitars I want. Can you help me out?
You mention it sounding a bit flat and lifeless, I wonder if that is because the body is basswood. Every basswood guitar I've played has been dead sounding as basswood is cheap and lightweight. It would be interesting to compare to a Kramer Baretta 84 with an Alder body. The original Kramers and Charvels were alder, and sometimes maple bodies. Anyway, love your videos!!!
Can you do a video where you compare the Frankie vs this 5150, since you have both? Theres no video out there like that and would appreciate it. Love the videos.
I have an EVH Wolfgang and it’s a great guitar but I’ve noticed that on your guitar the volume knob seems to be looser and easier to roll on/off. Or maybe you just make it look easy lol. Either way I have been wanting to put a volume pot in mine that is less stiff
haha I also have this exact Axe, but it just hangs on the wall, I just want to look at it, and I am scared to damage it somehow..in hangs right next to the Frankie...so these two guitars are more like my EvH Shrine
I keep coming back to this video. I’m on the verge of getting this guitar. The store I purchase from told me it has a satin matte finish. They said that type of finish tends to blemish with shiny patches over time. Has this happened to yours? They also said the 5150 space tape stickers can start to peel off. Have you had this issue? Answers to the above and any other feedback on the body finish you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks heaps.
Makes sense, but none of these issues would bother me. I say a guitar is to be played, not preserved! I’ve only had mine since Feb, so none of those issues have occurred yet, except a corner of one number sticker is slightly lifting.
@@TomShreds thanks heaps for that. Yes I heard the stickers peel off. Not an issue though as I believe you can purchase new ones from the evh store. Would you happen to know what Floyd Rose bridge is on the guitar? Rebranded 1000 series? You’re an awesome player. I’m thinking of reaching out to you for some lessons. And I’ll probably pull the trigger on the EVH 5150 guitar today. Thanks again!
@@edwardglyons happy to help! I don’t remember which Floyd it is. I imagine it says on many websites! It’s a cool axe, happy hunting! Hope to hear from you soon 👍🎸
for your sticky D-Tuna reduce your spring tensions on the spring mount by unscrewing the mounting screws some from the springs to the guitar body, reducing the pressure on the D-Tuna. Your description sounds like the return is to tight on the springs. Floyd acts like a fulcrum and you adjust by floating balance between string tension=spring tension. FYI
bro when you play the way you do (virtuoso-like) all those ''issues'' you enumerated become non-issues... hey, how bout you make some instructional vids, a good one might be how many of us can learn to tone down the heavy handed playing (regardless string gauge). great channel just sub'd)
I’m aware. I do the volume knob trick in several vids - Panama, Unchained, Chug 117, and also in my Yngwie medley. Maybe you need to think before speaking 😃
@@TomShreds calm down, no need to be mean to me - This ain’t ‘Mean Streets’ 😂 honestly I was just sharing what I read in EVH’s guitar player magazine and noticed in Live Without a Net you can really hear it in his solo section. As I’m not sure Eddie intended pure clean sounds. So perhaps that why it doesn’t cut through clean. Then again every ran through his phase 90 - that gives a little boost. I hope you enjoy your guitar. I just bought the same one yesterday
@@cearuilinjayne745 The lesson here, is please think before commenting. Your initial comment came across as a "I know more than you, you need to do what I say", when it turns out I've been doing what you were lecturing me about for decades. It's a very common trick (Yngwie, Brian May, many guitarists from the 80's or before), but I corrected you, and you responded by calling me a narcissist.
I wouldn’t use wd40 it’s really a water displacer used to stop things corroding, maybe a bit of silicone grease? I guess if eights are good enough for Tony Iommi they good enough for anyone
Awesome video! Great tones, awesome playing and perfect video work! I think this channel will grow really big! Looking forward to you YJM Guitars video
The striped 5150 I had completely had Eddie’s tone! It was so damn GOOD. I regret having sold it. I did get a striped Wolfgang to replace it….but that 5150 had THE TONE DOWN! The Wolfie sounds good, too…..but not like that 5150.
Great review Tom! Oh, I want one of these tooooo... but my wife told me I have enough guitars already, along with a bad case of GAS. Love your playing - light touch, heavy sound! 🤘
To fix the D tuner issue you are having, you have to tune the low E string and drop D tuner with the fine adjustment screw all the way out. There's instructions on how to adjust the drop D tuner online. With the fine tuner all the way out, the drop D tuner comes out way easier. Hope this helps ( I ran into the same issue until I followed the instructions on a video I found for drop D tuner install and adjustment)
Hey! Yes I have done this, and it can make it a little bit easier, but it works perfectly on my other axe as mentioned, in any position. Plus locking it with the fine tuner all the way out obviously prevents flattening the string at all, resulting in more Allen key visits to the nut. Appreciate your comment though 🤘
Tom…I have a MIJ wolfgang and I put an original floyd on it and an original nut…I change tunings quite a bit and the originals are the way to go…the 1000 was starting to “chew” up on the metal screws…rock on my man👍
