Turn off cable TV, turn down the heat, turn up the air conditioning, do not eat out everyday, carry your lunch to work, do not buy clothes, be careful what you spend at the grocery and find a part time job. Clean someones house, baby sit either in your home or their home. Pay the mortgage before anything else. Allow your children to help...this will allow them to have a brighter future. One year on my birthday I worked four jobs. Before school, watching the children, taught school all day, after school care and one hour of tutoring. I was tired but my mortgage got paid.

When separation happens, its best to sale the house and downsize to something smaller and cheaper. Its what I did, when my ex and I separated, we both moved out, sold the house paid off the mortgage and split the leftover money and went our own way. I searched for foreclosures and found one under $20,000. Bought it, and fixed 1 room at a time.

@Angela Barry Exactly. Smart lady. I kept wondering why these ladies held on to their houses after their husbands left; especially since they were not in a position to easily carry the mortgage payments by themselves. The stay-at-home Moms in particular. Who does that in the 21st century?? It's not 1950 and most economies now require 2-income households just for a couple to make ends meet.

Worked my ass off fixing it room by room but I've never had to worry about someone knocking on my door throwing me and my children out on the streets. It's been 7yrs, the house I bought for 20k is now worth 95k, when I sell it I will get my money back plus some. Or will keep it so my children will something to fall back on.

When you take out a thirty year mortgage on a home it's a safe bet that you'll face MANY unexpected ups and downs in your life. If banks received bailouts from the government you'd think ( obviously incorrectly ) the banks would have in place ways to assist homeowners. It's the sheer heartlessness and greed that is frightening. I can only hope the people in this documentary are in better financial shape now.

@dashcam26
@dashcam26 4 года назад
@rats arsed It is not a question of "evil people" obtaining goods (by deception ??). You buy the goods in good faith with every intention of paying for them. The "goods" have to be fit for purpose and that is a legal requirement. If they are not then the buyer is within their rights to return the goods for a full refund or replacement. In this case then the buyer can hand back the goods but that should not be at any extra cost to the buyer. It can argued also that in this instance people have entered into agreements involving large sums of money based on promises that have not been kept, assurances that amount to nothing and it can be argued that this amounts to fraud and certainly deception.

This comment is not aimed at any of these people, just a few suggestions on how to save money, don't buy a house or rent one you can't afford, don't go out and buy things to decorate it, do your own haircuts, mani/pedis, eat beans and rice and when you get sick of that rice and beans, stop having babies and don't get a pet. When you take a shower reuse your towels, you are clean after your shower and so are the towels, you save on laundry. There are so many ways to cut corners. And when you get paid, put a little in savings, even if it's 5 bucks. Get in the mindset of living frugal. I don't need to treat myself to eating out or even going to a thrift shop. Young people, if you start early by saving early, you won't regret it. I have two kids, neither one of them had a nursery, the four of us lived in a 2 bedroom apartment, our baby girl slept in a $5.00 garage sale crib in our room with mismatched everything, I remember her 1 St carseat without the handles, the kind you have to have to bring them home in from the hospital, they don't have handles. We never complained, we were happy and I guess didn't think about a carseat that had handles, I'm not trying to come off as being a martyr, I just hope that this might help someone, somehow. I hate to see people struggle. I love you all.

The Insurance companies have done this to people, I worked at Sobeys and could not believe the amount of food I had to toss out and record it as waste, Some of my Co worker left work crying after begging for the food they were putting in the garbage. This woman told another employee that her husband could have used some of them nice dinners , her hours were cut to seventeen hours per week, her husband would soon be going on to Employment Insurance as he gets laid off just as Christmas is coming. These Grocery store Delis throwing out food could easily feed many many people , thank God people like Bon Jovi for sharing so much of his wealth with people from all walks of like. Blessings

I am astounded at the argumentative and judgmental direction these comments have taken, bickering over whether its the man's fault for leaving or the woman's fault for delusionally trying to hang on to her home. A house is not just a house. We all know of the psychological importance of having a stable 'home.' The point here is that all of these people TRIED to work with the banks, to come up with a payment system that was within their means. These people were not deadbeats trying to skip out on their responsibilities. A little compassion mightn't go amiss.

You’re thinking of it from a emotional standpoint. It’s business, what’s right is right not what pulls on your heartstrings, making the right sacrifices to fit your circumstances not your emotions, being responsible and wise, and it’s about logic. Emotions has never kept the bills paid.. A man who doesn’t work he doesn’t eat.. That’s like your employer telling you they don’t have the money to pay you for the hours you’ve worked due to an incident that had nothing to do with the employees but because he’s a good boss are you going to allow that to slide and be ok with the fact that you’d worked 40hrs plus overtime for 2 weeks and now you’re hearing that your check isn’t coming this month and charge it to him being a good boss? I’d hope not.. You’re not working there because he’s a good boss you’re working there because you need your money.

I feel sorry for all of them, or anyone facing the horror of losing their home. To me life has been simpler when I rented a home. I owned two houses in my lifetime and they became a chain around my neck, okay until a new roof was needed, a new hot water heater needed, plumbing was working, etc., an endless worry about repairs that were always big expense items. When renting all I'm responsible for is the rent, if something breaks down the landlord gets called to fix it. Your home is your security, even if it is only one room you're pay for, that is your room. To be placed in a situation where you can be tossed out on the street has to be one of the most humiliating and stressful situations anyone can be forced into. It shouldn't be this way.

The takeaway I got from this is that Ireland needs better child support and alimony laws. Hopefully that has changed. Also, it is pointless to make partial payments. The bank is not operating off of emotions nor do they care that you are trying. It is best to save that money for an apartment.

What struck me as sad in this story was the fact that it was women who were dealing with all the issues. Where are all these deadbeat men? @janeDoe-ru2xy

They didn't necessarily say all the men weren't supporting their kids, but I don't think they have as an intense "men need to care for their children" program as we do in the U.S.which sucks, most men just plain won't work but now it doesn't matter, once you have a kid, you will always owe for them so you may as well pay now, it will cost less.. The women .it seems to me they think they should stay home and be provided for in a way that says they are married but they are not, so they don't get that kind of money. The woman need to get as many jobs as required to live, because that's what a person does. I'm sorry but if you plan to own a place you have to make the payments. However the banks had a helping hand by the tax payers and that should account towards their payments and that would be fair, not toss them out on the street,

Europe is not the US or Canada were there is massive lands to build homes and expand. The space in Europe is very limited. If you a house u bought 15-20 years ago, most probably you will never be able to buy another house. Also, renting is not cheap in Europe especially in big cities. You have no idea how unaffordable rent is in Ireland. We are in a horrific situation where it's a tax break , negative gearing, for landlords so they prefer vacant properties that require no maintenance. Literally thousands of vacant properties. You can buy but you must have a pre approved mortgage which is nigh on impossible to get. The banks got bailed out but not the taxpayers. Look at the situation in UK. Stagnant wages and casual work contracts do not make you attractive to a bank for a mortgage. Couples split up but it's rare that both parents take on equal care and responsibilities for the family obligations. The banks across the world were helped as we're big conglomerates like GM and FORD but nothing for we the people. Dude where's my country, my society, my civilization and my human rights!

This doco brought back some very bad memories. I was evicted over 30 years ago & this was followed by 28 years of homelessness (Not staying with friends or couch surfing but sleeping rough in trains,airports,sheltes, train stations, parks etc). The sheer stress of the months leading up to the eviction was more stressful than actually having nowhere to go. Although evicted it was a bit of relief that it had been done. I was consumed by misery & once the bank decides to forclose then there is nothing that can be done. If the outstanding balance is lower than the property value they will sell it for anything just as long as they get their money back. Banks are heatless while making their billions of profit. @helenkobayashi6900 Yes. Banks are businesses but then why should the taxpayer have to pay for their bad decisions and bankruptcy? Banks should fold like any other business with customers being paid for deficiencies in their accounts; not the administration. Govt working for big business, instead of for the ppl that pay their wages.

In the end we are all just an account number to these banks. Although they call you by first name and they know your kids and your dogs, when push comes to shove they will retreat behind their desks and become heavy-handed. I don't understand the banks rushing to repossess all these properties in order to recoup their mortgage losses. WHO is going to buy these homes? Everyone is in the same boat financially. It would be far wiser for the banks to work with people, to restructure their mortgages, to give them longer terms, and accept the amount of payment that a family CAN make each month. At least it is something coming in to the banks; what good is an empty, boarded-up house that nobody can afford to buy? If property wasn't so over-inflated to begin with, if it sold for reasonable prices, families wouldn't end up in this situation.

exactly, they could at least have a family in the home adding to the property and still get money for it, if they reposs they have to leave it open for repairs, and permits to do repairs and inspection to be sure its up to building standards and then put it to the market, the repairs and permits take up to 3 months for some and then inspections cost the bank and when ready for resale, who is going to buy it with the economy so week, keep the people in their homes and at least let them rent it as to own and if they know the ending of the goal they will pay and not keep money tucked in the sock drawer for repairs like most home owners do, and then we would have less homelessness

This same thing happened across the United States in 2008 . The bottom fell out of the stock market because of subprime loans. The lenders were loaning money for people who didn't earn much money and had bad credit to buy homes that they couldn't afford. These people should have realized that they couldn't afford these homes. A lot of other people had multiple credit cards and were using one credit card to pay another credit card bill. One bank bought other banks and their credit card business. My friend had to go back to work doing 2 part time menial , physical jobs to pay back on wopping credit card bill when 4 credit cards when now owned by the same bank and company and her credit was cancelled. It was difficult for me 10 years earlier when I had to charge my medications co pays and hospital bills for my severe asthma and then I had to change jobs where I wasn't making as much. Thousands upon thousands of people were evicted from their homes and their homes homes were repossessed . They couldn't file bankruptcy either because of the American laws. The smart ones sold their homes and gave their money back to the bank . They then rented an apartment. That is reality. We pay a lot for both medical insurance, medication co pays, surgical bills and hospital bills in the U.S. It is also almost impossible to get long term disability and it pays almost nothing. How could anyone not know what their monthly payment is? I think that these people expect everything to work out for them because they have socialized everything over there in Europe and almost everything is taken care care of. In the U.S. we are realistic because we don't have socialized anything. If you can't pay , you expect to get evicted whether it is a house or an apartment. If you don't pay for your car, it will get repossessed. If you don't pay your phone bill, your service is cancelled, if you don't pay your electric and heating bill, it will be turned off unless it is below freezing - then they will wait. If you don't pay your cable bill or for your internet, it will be turned off. You have to pay your medical bills and copays . If you don't pay your co-pays for your medications, you won't get them. Itt doesn't matter if it was your home and grew up there, etc. If you can't pay- you need to leave and find an affordable apartment. The banking crisis happened because people signed for loans they couldn't afford. I had to move in with my sister and her family when I lost my job because a hospital I worked at became bankrupt in 1995. I ultimately had to take another nursing job which paid less and paid off my debts and for health insurance with my savings TSA I was saving for my retirement - and I paid a penalty. You have to make a budget and live within your means - and not expect help from anyone.

Why are the husbands allowed to leave and not pay? Where is spousal support and child support? Is this not enforced in Ireland? Most of the time in America the house is sold during the divorce and the profit is split unless an agreement is made for one partner to stay in the house.

It also happens in the UK, but often what happens is the woman wants to stay in the marital home with the kids, so he signs the house over to her as part of the divorce settlement and then some of them still expect him to pay for the bills and upkeep of the house he is no longer living in, and if when sold he will not receive any money. I too found it extremely odd that both the women were divorced yet giving the impressing the husbands had left them with nothing. Oh and just to add 18 is a man, he should be out getting a part time or full time job to help his mum out.

Erm we are only seeing one side of the story. The Courts will force a father to pay for their kids. Why during the divorce proceedings did they not agree to sell the house and look for something more managable ? I know there is the line of thought, not right to move them away from their schools, friends etc. but really is that worse than being homeless? As for the mother refusing to tell her son, what is all that about he is 18 not a child. I hope they all find new homes, but people need to stop borrowing beyond their means or to their limits, without giving a thought to it is a fact of life that bills and food prices go up, and you never know what is around the corner personally, loss of a partner, job, etc.

If marriage breaks up, sell or give property back to bank and get a small, cheap apartment you can afford. Why sit there and let things get worse and worse? The bank doesn't owe you anything, you owe them, and they don't give a shit about your personal problems.

NaYnAJaY0526 NaYnAJaY0526 I live on Vancouver Island, BC Canada. It’s the same here. $600 for rooms in an apartment. $900 for bachelor apt 12-1500.00 for a 1bdr apt & houses are into the thousands. Buying anything is out of reach for regular folks & getting worse. My friend’s 1956 home in a working class neighbourhood increased $90,000.00 in one year. One of our huge issues here is property’s being bought up by foreign investors (primarily Asian) & left vacant. They’ve now implemented a ‘vacant home tax’ to try & slow it down but it has contributed greatly to one’s inability to find reasonable, long term housing here. I really hate these banks that refuse to work with homeowners that are making good faith Payments and working as hard as they can to keep their homes !? Don't these banks realize that by reducing the mortgage payments and just attaching it onto the end of the mortgage loan to make it extend the loan for a period of years to pay off the house is far better than removing these ppl and having a house stand empty for years making absolutely no money whatsoever on them because no one can afford to buy or rent them . The house falls into disrepair and gets vandalized and after several years the house then is just useless, has to be torn down and they can either rebuild or sell just the land at a discounted price. They are to stupid to not realize they are hurting themselves. I just don't get it . I could understand if they weren't making any payment . Just sickens me to no end . And to the jerk off husbands that commit to these woman and these home and just walk away and leave the family without any help whatsoever whether it be child support payments or continuing to help pay the mortgage with the ex so his children can have a roof over their heads and a decent life , you should know karma is a very real thing and it'll catch up to you eventually. I hoped to know if these women were able to keep their homes. @25:00 I love love love Ciara's chalkboard behind her. @43:00 I'm tearing up over Ciara's sharing the news with her son. As a mother and grandmother i know exactly what it feels like to give this news. I lost my home due to a fraudlent rental/sales agent. At the time my 6 kids were under the ages 13. That feeling of being homeless and losing the place you've invested your love, time and money is exhausting and terrifying. Then when it happens you are stressed out and depression sets in. I also know that God works hard to move us toward the direction He wants us to be. Sometimes it's a HARD ride down that ROUGH road. But, please think of anything happy to keep yourself from ending your life. Kids and our loved ones are more important than material things. P.s. i didn't know where I'd go after the eviction. I lost because I was clueless and couldn't afford a lawyer circa 2009. I didn't ask for any help from the people i know. We slept in a mini van one night for several hours-- my mom help me start figuring out how to get back into a roof over our heads the very next day. I love my mom we stayed in her house about 5 days.. I am sad living in anyone's home- even temporary. I hate starting over it's exhausting but, like i said it's God moving me. If you don't believe that's fine. I can't explain why thing's happened. As per me I'll keep hope in my heart and go through good times and bad times the best i can. My mind has seen and heard alot. Maybe I've even seen too much ugly in the world ...Just know I'm ready for the rough bumps more than i was before- Hey, I'm letting the world know than I am older, wiser and more God seeking now.

It's very sad but if you can't afford the property you have to find a property you CAN afford. That's the reality. No one is going to rescue you and it's not the bank's fault that you can no longer afford the payments on something you chose to mortgage or rent. Do what you need to do to keep your family together. You may have to commute a little longer to work, sell belongings, pick up a side job and/or live in a smaller space. How you react in difficult times is a testament to your character and when you have kids, this is your time to teach them hard life lessons. We all make money mistakes. I found myself in a tight spot a few years ago. I was in a relationship with someone who took me for every penny he could and within the space of a year I was nearly penniless. I moved out of my large lovely apartment, sold most of my possessions and moved into a tiny studio apartment. I gave up all of the fancy amenities I had - no in-unit washer or dryer, no outdoor patio, no central/self controlled HVAC and the building was old and had a major mold problem. I ate cheap and worked as many hours as I physically could - about 60 per week between two jobs. And, I was able to keep my two cats. I had a few expensive vet emergencies come up that i was able to cover. Yes, it sucked. It took me almost four years to recover but I made the best of it. Tighten the belt and strengthen your resolve to get through it and you will. I could have declared bankruptcy but I didn't. Maybe I was lucky but I never once let myself feel like I was a victim. I'm a survivor.

It's really no different anywhere in large cities. If you want to own a home you really need to be a working couple. It's almost impossible for a single person or single parent to buy and maintain a home if they are not white collar professionals. I think as a society we have become "spoiled" in the Western world. We believe that everyone should own a house and that buying and maintaining that house should be the top priority. I am 65 years old and when I die, I will never have owned a home. I have rented all my adult life since I left my parents' home. I have seen many of my friends lose their homes because one of the wage-earners became ill or injured and couldn't work ever again or not until after a long period of convalescence. I personally think that we need to rethink the way we look at housing. I think the single family home is going to go the way of the albatross - it simply isn't sustainable for people on the lower end of the financial ladder any more. We need to start looking at how people live in other parts of the world, to look at multi-family housing, with two couples and their children sharing a home, or co-op housing where a group of people contribute to the mortgage and maintenance. In places like India and China, it's not unusual at all for three generations to live under one roof. It's not something we're used to in North America, but we might have to start taking a more serious look at things like that. I cannot understand that one woman who cried through the entire video because she was so exhausted and she had cancer and whatever else - and all she could do was stress about losing that house. Fuck it !!! If it's ruining your life to that extent, let it go. Move into something smaller, something more affordable and not have that nightmare every day of your life. So what if all your kids grew up there and all your memories are there - make new memories in a new place. It's just a house. Nobody should be that "ruled" by an inanimate object that it becomes an obsession day and night. Nobody needs that stress.

This happens all the time especially in the US. When this happens to either wife or husband, immediately sell the home and hopefully there will be enough equity to pay off any other bills, move to a smaller place even if you have to pay rent. Most likely you will have to live with just what’s you need. You will make it and it will get better. Now go and take the other spouse to court and get what you can or deserve. The Judges looks at it as he deserted the family and he is just as much responsible and he also put more stress and work on the spouse. He will have to take care if the children for sure.

A Clem I would have sold the home as soon as possible and lived in a hotel until I could find an affordable place to live. Theres no point continuing to pay reduced payments if the bank has informed you that they will not accept anything less than full. And usually thats how they operate. Of course thats assuming the home is worth more than the mortgage... otherwise I would have just allowed the bank to seize the home and stopped paying completely. Really, its a no win situation. Either way youll be losing the house. Its sad but theres no other option if your finances can no longer support the full monthly mortgage. Just use this as a learning experience and move forward. Its all we can do.

The sad truth is that, if you cannot afford the mortgage, you can't afford to live there. You have to sell or lose it. We don't teach life skills in school. No budgeting classes. People don't plan, before they have kids. We seem to think that things will just work out--someone will help us, our families, the government... It is sad, but you can't live beyond your means. I understand that men leave relationships; but when that happens, you can't continue to live your lifestyle. What, exactly, are we supposed to do--let people continue to live in places without paying?

Unfortunate circumstances don't make the loan go away, of course their situations are sad and unfair, but the home " the bank owns" until you pay it off has to be paid for.

I hope she didn’t add animals to the home after the divorce. They are very expensive. And hard to get housing with. The real shame is the government making sure the market has a good supply of available homes on the market costing 3x the average annual salary.

As I watch these posts one thing comes to mind. The world as a whole is about wealth and wealth only. This is particularly true of western nations. Parents should teach their children about the importance of saving and investing and being financially secure. Any person, place, or thing standing in your way of this goal, should be avoided. As someone born into poverty who now lives debt free, doing this is no easy task. Most people involve too many other people in their lives. These people tend to be anchors weighing them down. Man being a social animal, they tend to not want to break these bonds. I know because I did it. No one has to end up like these people but in order not to you had better be serious about your goal. The world doesn't like the poor and those without.
@jasonlopez8055

Linzie Rogers I agree 👍🏼 Everyones main focus should be on stashing away savings, having an emergency fund, working on a budget, and finally using said savings to invest and grow your wealth. Once you have this system in place and understand how to use compounding interest to your benefit, then you or anyone can spend responsibly and live your life without fear of being homeless or drowning in debt. I myself have been going thru the same thing and yes it has been incredibly difficult not going on vacations or travelling abroad. But I really want to grow my assets and have a system of enhancing my wealth so that I can be financially independent. If that means no traveling, wearing worn out shoes, buying tacky clothes on sale, not buying a new phone or laptop, and so forth ill do it. I wanna live my life stress free without worrying about if ill have enough money for the future. After a few years of doing this, Ive accumulated a decent amount of savings. In addition, I've purchased a few hundred shares of stocks that I now own for myself, and Ive been buying treasury notes with the extra money I have that Im not yet ready to use. Im amazed and relieved at what I have accomplished but yes it was difficult to do and took a lot of dedication and planning. Was it all worth it? Yes .... yes it was. 🙂 Good luck to the rest of you and never falter in your efforts to better yourself financially or otherwise.

Here in NZ, in 1996, I never even got taken to Court. I simply got a Notice to Remedy on the house, (that wasn't finished to spec, just thought I'd throw that in - unable to rent it out...), and I was $11000 in arrears. Possibly because of the 11.95% interest rate that suddenly clicked in. They knew my business situation, and the house was sold while I was living in it, for a ridiculous amount. About 10% of the purchase price. 3 days later. They sent a debt collector after me, and we had a free and frank exchange of views. I did suggest starting a class-action against the mortgage holder, and got hundreds of responses. The financiers wriggled back down into their holes. I do know the law, (I've worked in it as a pro-bono advocate), and I've NEVER heard anything else since about that so=called default. Ever. My credit rating is immaculate. So challenge the bastards.
