Evictions of Farm workers and dwellers EP_03 

During the past 30 years, millions of poor farmworkers, farm dwellers and their families have been evicted from their homes and off farms by white farm owners. This despite the government having introduced specific laws to protect farmdwellers from this horrific practice.
In fact the evictions of farmworkers increased after the Extension of Security of Land Tenure Act 62 of 1997 (ESTA) was passed. It is estimated that between 1994 - 2004, during the first decade of democracy alone, over a million farmworkers and their families were evicted from their homes and land on which they resided.
This has continued unabated since then and in recent weeks farmers have stepped up evictions of farmworkers. In the show today we look at why this is happening and what is being done about it.
