Idk man I enjoyed it a lot. The actress that plays the possessed mother was absolutely terrifying as a deadite to me. The fact to that there is no holding back on who dies in this movie there are practically kids dying in this and I was absolutely shocked by that. I understand where you’re coming from with the woman at the end being oblivious to the carnage in the garage but she probably didn’t hear the screaming and shit is because they show she was on the 5th floor and I’m pretty sure all the shit was happening on a higher floor. I still like the 2013 movie over this one but I still think the evil dead franchise is still running pretty strong.

I would disagree that the setting wasn't fully utilized. I thought the demolished stairs and incapacitated elevator gave the movie a proper sense of claustrophobia that we get from previous movies in the franchise. The elevator in particular is very well utilized with the Shining reference in the final act as well as the dangling wires r*ping the mom. I thought the movie was well paced and I don't think that the gore was held back at all. I like the 2013 slightly more in the gore regard. But overall I thought this was an excellent. One criticism I would agree with is that the very beginning and ending could have been cut out. But even then I thought that the cold open was really good. Particularly that title card.
@FrightfullyForgotten
@FrightfullyForgotten Год назад
So our argument is that if your gonna take out the stair case and the elevator (like the bridge in the originals) then what's the point having it in an apartment complex. If you're gonna isolate the main characters again just make it a cabin for the 4th time.

I respect your overall opinion. But I just want to maybe put the beginning & ending scenes into a different perspective. What if those scenes were subtly setting up a potential sequel? The movie is called Evil Dead Rise. Oftentimes a title like that is also a foreshadowing thing. So perhaps the beginning and end merely imply that Evil Dead have risen again and the future is not safe because the story will continue now that the Deadites are back. The two scenes were not really connected to the main story of the movie, that's true. But I also wonder if the scenes could be a nod to a potential sequel
@FrightfullyForgotten

I would argue a film needs to stand on its own and if there are unnecessary scenes that have NOTHING to do with the main plot of the film and drag down the pacing, those scenes need to be cut. Having scenes that set up a sequel isn't necessarily bad but if they negatively affect the film then really they aren't worth it.
@stephensanders8572

I for one loved the movie and the theater I watched it with had a blast with it. I didn't have an issue with most of the things you guys mentioned and it thought this one hit most of the right notes. The lack of humor is a little jarring going from the og trilogy to these last two but could easily be explained by the multiple book revelation. It's been all but confirmed that there are three books (the og book, the 2013 book, and this one) and maybe they summon different deadite hoards. The og book could summon more of a trixter deadite, while this one summons a more sadist one. Who knows, depends on where they go from here. The only issue I had was mentioned above by another poster. We see characters that suffer injuries that you would think lead to possession but it doesn't happen. Why is that? I don't know, just forget about it... All in all this was really good and had a lot of ED hallmarks. It felt nostalgic enough without using the OGs as a crutch

When a Evil Dead "film" is inseparable from your every day horror film with a bunch of jump scares and gore utilized in such a predictable manner, that's not what i would call a Evil Dead film. While it is understandable that all three of the original films were quite different from one another, it was Sam Raimi's quirks that expertly was able to make the three films feel like a semi coherent trilogy. They were all really great in their own respective manners and represent a gold standard in B moviemaking. And the jump scares and gore particularly in the original worked because of the gritty aesthetic and feeling the madness that Ash is going through so much that you could almost smell his sweat. What we have here is something that if it wasn't for the usage of the brand name, it really would be nothing more than a disposable waste of time that would be put on if there was nothing else to watch for that night. There is NO NEED whatsoever for any more Evil Dead. First off we don't have Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi's quirky style is not there and neither the 2013 version or this new waste space offers a idiosyncratic character of its own to stand out. I didn't think that Ash vs Evil Dead was perfect considering that the horror and the comedy never jelled as well as it did in Evil Dead 2, but it was still significantly more proper Evil Dead than those. Honestly, i rather see you guys do your own Evil Dead esque movie with a killer 80s soundtrack by Adam. Warts and all, that movie would be a hell of a lot more entertaining and fun, especially with a decent 16mm film camera. 😁
@FrightfullyForgotten
@FrightfullyForgotten Год назад
oh man, well we totally made Evil Dead type movies in the basement as kids in Jr High, "Passage to Hell" was one haha, we basically dressed our friends up as zombies and beat each other up. And agreed that there's no need for anymore Evil Dead movies. We didn't even need Ash vs Evil dead but it was a welcome surprise seeing how much they nailed the tone. And you're right the first 2 Evil Dead movies aren't perfect, but it was the low budget charm and heart and soul behind it that made them memorable and lovable. Doesn't matter how good a script for a new Evil Dead Movie is, it won't have those components, it's lightning in a bottle.
@Pete-eb3vo
@Pete-eb3vo Год назад
@@FrightfullyForgotten If anything, i was mainly referring to Ash vs Evil Dead not being perfect. Even though it was a enjoyable show, it always felt like the humour was more well done than the horror was and that's why the show didn't seem to have a entirely proper balance, but it still made for a decent watch because it felt much more like true Evil Dead than the remake at the time did, which isn't saying much but still. The original Evil Dead i would actually argue is a perfect horror film.. Evil Dead 2 is a prime example of the perfect balance of horror and comedy. And Army of Darkness is just a damn fun fantasy adventure with great nods to films like Jason and the Argonauts. The original trilogy is a gold standard for the B movie. It was paced as expected for an Evil Dead film. The Deadites in all incarnations of this franchise have done the are they are they not. I actually like the cabin parts. By the sounds of it you fellas went in expecting something more akin to a Romero film or another Cabin in the woods but were dissapointed you got an Evil Dead film. If they had upped the body count it wouldn't had felt like an Evil Dead film. As for the tone it was straddled between the og trilogy and the 2013 film. Some great homage moments to Evil Dead 2 while keeping it less up beat. I've always thought Drag Me to Hell was the true successor to the og Trilogy and Ash Vs the Evil Dead is more of a sitcom with tons of gross outs. Both if which are great btw.

There was a unique brand of quirky humor that ran through the first three Evil Dead films that really made them work for me. It was absent in the 2013 version and, from what you say in this awesome review video, absent from this most recent installment. I remember when they tried to continue the Pink Panther franchise without Peter Sellers - that's kind of what this feels like to me. What you said about cookie-cutter possession/self-harm movies really resonates - that's been the downside of many horror films I've seen of late. Great video, guys!

I feel like everything that you guys hate about The movie is actually what I love about the movie. It really did it tune into the psychological aspect of horror. I think that they really dragged out the whole getting to the point where it’s just straight up action and things going on is because I think they really wanted to bring the perspective to the other characters of not knowing what’s going on. Like it really took them a minute to catch on and realize their mom is possessed by something. It like gave them false hope in a way which I think is fucked up and awesome. I think it really put you in their shoes and gave you the stress and concerned that they felt. I don’t think movies should just get straight to the point all of the time .because then you miss the beautiful usage of the turmoil and conflict that brings horror movies this experience ,that digs into the audiences in a mental way.

This movie had so much potential. I was expecting the movie to take full advantage of the awesome deserted location. I would love to have seen Beth and Cassie fighting deadites on every floor trying to get to the bottom floor where the escape door is. Had potential to be the best evil dead movie and possibly one of the most fun horror films ever made. Could have been the Raid with deadites and other creatures. That sounds so badass. Could have been like a real maze of horror. Wish we got to see possessed Ellie taking out the neighbours to. Not just that 1 guy with the missing eye. Unfortunately only 1 line stood out to me. Possessed Ellie says something to Beth from outside the peephole. Those who have seen it know what I’m talking about. I LOL haha. I was also disappointed by the climax. Creature was too much in the shadows and was barely a fight. In future instalments, they should make the deadites more tougher and relentless. They go down too easily in this series.
