These announcers are fantastic. Their tone screams professional but their language (swearing notwithstanding) screams casual. I love it. It's a perfect hybrid between college bro-dudes and intellectual/professional sports castors. 10/10 I'm so sick of bad commentary. So refreshing.
I can't stop watching Melee top 8's. I love the character conflicts, the subtle plots, the way the results play out just feel well developed. They don't say a word but the players say so much with their only medium of expression to communicate to us watchers: melee. Also fucking love the commentary and tangents they go on. They totally add to the experience and they sound like my own internal dialogue sometimes almost, just really fine details about things they kind of ramble on sometimes. I honestly wonder if they require stimulants to keep up for so long (both players and commentators). Also, they remind me of Joe Rogan commentating a really good UFC match.
Real talk, Scar and Toph did godlike commentary. The kind of scar you see on Melee It On Me and the scar and toph show, the cocky "fifth at genesis" SUP WIT IT scar left the building and the professional, informative, but still very likeable and interesting scar joined toph for this top 8.
theryaner All I wanted was for Hungrybox to win. But I totally agree that watching him play was boring because of that super high defense. But Hbox stopped the edge grabbing and it got really exciting!
no no, I get it. Hbox defense was totally legit. Armada brought the fire! And it got exciting when Hbox actually started Resting more and it got surprised me how many risks he took. I freaked out whenever he landed a rest. Idk i'm all about Jigglypuff!
Props to Armada, HBox played really, really well. Contrary to certain complainers I enjoyed his strategies and his play style a lot. It shows the effort and time he's put into Jigglypuff and Melee.
but sunglasses indoors? trashbox is just trying to hard to be cool. and running away playing time in a fighting game? that should tell you a lot about his personality
As someone who never watched a real competive Melee match... Hungrybox......Jesus Christ dude I am in awe at how well you played to counter Fox..... It even inspired me to learn to use Puff myself, something I never though I would do.
Seeing HBox's evolution at Evo, especially losing to Armada, (and when people like Mango say "Hbox gave me and Armada a free Evo") really makes his win at '16 a real triumph. Takes real stones to keep coming back.
@@ethanmcroy Oh please. This man worked his ass off to get to the top. You do whatever it takes in tournament legalities to win. Fox spams his lasers constantly, M2k chain grabs with March constantly, M2k camps the ledge with Sheik constantly, nobody bats an eye. Hbox does it and gets booed. Trust me, I like more upfront combat myself but it's fair. If you can't get around the playstyles of the top 8, then you shouldn't compete. As seen here, Armada beats Hbox so it's possible.
HingleMcCringleBerry26 Yea that match was nuts! I'm a old school player (ken days) and that shit has me thinking of maining Samus again......damn......lol
Orion3k lol I hear ya dude, after the tourney I was playing Samus in friendlies just cause of that match lol Samus' went off at evo, duck, hugs and Darrell placed pretty dam high
+DatGuyWithNoName He won with fox not peach. Someone is not confident in their own character it seems. Sorry but this has pissed me off ever since I saw the results.
+ChiefMickey264 Peach is awful against puff. Like, actually abysmal. At that level why play a bad matchup like that for pride purposes? It's dumb. They both camped, armada plays fox and peach, deal with it.
Perfect I"ll sub. Btw what you think about mango losing ? :/ It was such an intense match and I wasnt feeling good cus i was pulling for mango when going got reallllly tough. He was doing it but i think he got too frustruated and hbox was so campy like always, hbox even got booed in the beggining of evo top 8 cus he was campin like a bitch...i dislike him soo much for that. Your thoughts on evo?
Boxin B Mang0 losing wasn't really a surprise for me, He did get 2 SD's the same match. Hungrybox, Leffen and Armada has been practicing together for a month now, im still shocked over the fact that leffen lost.
Match #1 - 4:05 Match #2 - 13:50 Match #3 - 35:08 Match #4 - 47:06 Match #5 - 58:07 Match #6 - 1:10:48 Match #7 - 1:27:22 Match #8 - 1:40:52 Match #9 - 1:49:21 Grandfinals -2:03:52
DiglettUser salty? and I watched the documentary, he did say he respected him for revolutionizing the game he enjoyed so much. how is that shit talking?
***** Yeah I know that. Mang0 will always be better than him at the game, but since he didn't watch how Armada handled Hungrybox's strategy, he failed and it's his own fault.
Axe is so awesome. Such talent and such hype wow Kinda sad for PP though. He deserved better in this tournament. Hope he'll attempt others and get his revenge
MixJunkie360 totally deserved because he was commentating with Leffen a week before Evo 2015 and Mang0 and Leffen were being a jerk to PP Armada and especially HungryBox and guess who sent Leffen to Losers and eliminated Mang0 lmaooooo
What's wrong with how HBox won? He played his match with Mango incredibly well. Do you think he's gonna try and bum rush Fox with Puff. No, that'll get you killed. He got into Mango's mind, and kept his composure during the matches. That said, I'm glad Armada won. He deserved that win more than anyone else
@@ethanmcroy No he plays SMART. You're not going to bum rush a fucking PRO Fox and expect not to get shine spammed or up grabbed then up-aired. Yes it's a too campy at times but Hbox alone doesn't do this, so does M2K and others.
I know this is old but people talk about how mangos puff was aggressive and how he did well. That’s because everyone played to what today’s standard is considered bad. Look at old melee no one played smart people played on impulse.
8dreadLock8 When M2K played and lost: "He clearly wasn't playing his best" or some other bullshit. When M2K doesn't play at all: "I think he would have won if he played" shut the fuck up, he wouldn't have won, fact. M2K is great but there is absolutely no possible way he would have beaten Armada, Leffen, or PP.
Why is everyone hating on HBox and the way he had to play this tournament? Yes, had to play. You think it was cheap the way he kept hanging on the side, it was just a cheap for Fox to continuously shoot lasers from a safe distance. Why do you think HBox never played like that before?
ButerandToast I'm a regular watcher, and if I can I go to (observe) the tournaments when in Orlando. So I know that this is not typical HBox. If he always played like this, then yes, I would think it was stupid. He was just going with the way Armada was playing.
***** the way armada was playing was not laser camping. hbox started ledge camping first. armada didnt want to approach carelessly so he shot lasers. every fox does that when their opponent ledge camps.
I was only 9 years old I loved Fox so much, I had Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo Gamcube I pray to Fox every night, thanking him for the techskill I've been given "Fox is love" I say. "Fox is life" My dad overhears me and calls me a meleefag I knew he was just jealous of my high tier main I call him a casual He slaps me and sends me to sleep I'm crying now, and my face hurts I lay in bed and it's really cold A warmth is moving towards me I feel something touch me It's Fox I am so happy He grabs me with his powerful furry hands and downthrows me on my hands and knees I'm ready I spread my ass cheeks for Fox He whispers in my ear "Torya" He shine spikes my butthole It hurts so much but I do it for Fox I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water I push against his force I want to please Fox He HIYAAS a mighty HIYAA as he fills my butt with lasers My dad walks in Fox looks him straight in the eye and says "Mishun comprete" Fox leaves through the window Fox is love, Fox is life
Commentator summary: - Armada is so great, so studious. - Hungrybox gets booed and bashing his play stratigy. - Hungrybox starts raping people. From the bottom climbinb back up. - Hungrybox completely adapts and shows what he's made of. - at the last game of the tourney, commentators finally give propps to hungrybox. Lesson learned. No more underestimating the underdog.
Chu is such a legend. I think it's hilarious that of all players to be in Top 8 in the biggest Smash Melee tournament of all time, ChuDat was one of them
As much as I enjoyed this top 8, it wasn't as exciting as the last EVO Melee Top 8's. Those top 8's had more hyped matches. Don't get me wrong, this top 8 had really good hyped matches. Plup vs Leffen match was very hyped indeed and is my favorite match in this top 8. However, if there's one thing this top 8 has proven, it shows that Melee isn't always fun to watch. It too, can be campy and boring to watch sometimes. Doesn't happen too often, but when it does, it can be boring to watch, depending on your perspective. To me, the first Hungrybox vs Armada match was a really boring match, but I do respect the playstyle and it's a viable strategy. It just sucks most still don't realize that :( *INB4 Melee fanboys call me dumb or shut the fuck up* ;)
***** Don't worry it's not just you, that match sucked. Hbox was playing like a bitch this tournament. I know it's viable blah blah blah but it's just stupid. I honestly think he would have played just as good being more aggressive. As for what Skyrux said, that's not true at all. Fighting against a camping jigglypuff that is a stock up is extremely difficult because one wrong move you are done
Why everyone hatin on hbox? Hes defensive player because thats the type of player he is plus hes chill. Just cuz his opponents hates him for being too defensive doesnt mean you have to as well.
Back in the day I was an Armada fanboy so I didn't really like Mango cause he's so cocky. But over the years he's become one of my favorite players. Watching him play is like art.
when my grandson ask me: What was the best thing you saw when you were young? Ill say: I saw a man someone who created the potential from the things he loved and won at american soil with it
GNU Bernie Sanders 2028 Elite GNU Emacs User 60% is when up smash kills 40% is when up throw up air kills and 0% is when up throw up air up air up air kills
melee commentators should start analyzing stats and what happens throughout the match, ex. talking about # of approaches (both successful and failed entries), # of techchases missed, etc etc. it'd be so cool and it'd make melee look like legit esport, yknow what i'm sayn ? im honestly just so baked guys gaht damn, i just love this game and want it to bloom ookie :(
I've been saying it ever since he switched to fox, Armada is the best player in the world. He can adapt to any playstyle and he never has a big head and his mind is almost always clear.
+beeptf2 Fox players are kinda forced to play this way since it's the only safe way to beat puff. While I think Armada camped wayyy too much, none of these matches would be a snorefest if it wasn't for hbox.
Sayr actually the reason they camp is so that Puff can't just camp and so that Puff has no other option but to approach and Fox having strong attacks and being very fast makes it hard for Puff
Smash 4 -> Everyone complains about Diddys DThrow + UAir Melee -> No one Complains about Foxs Laser shit and his UThrow + UAir Fuck on Armada stop boo on Hungrybox
Everyone is complaining about how boring it is to watch hungrybox i'm hyped when I watch hungrybox because everyone else uses the same characters. Watching a puff player get second is awesome! Much respect to the hungriest of boxes.
Glad to see PP make a great appearance (even though Armada and HBox stomped him). Him and West are my two favorite players, but I sure hope everything's going alright for him outside of Melee. Don't mean to sound rude but I can see he's put on some weight, hope his depression isn't hitting him hard again :/
Skorrow Mang0 wasnt laser camping Hbox, He was approaching up until Hbox went to the ledge, at which point he shot lasers because he wasn't sure what to do
Lol looking at the comments its funny how many people are calling a strategy boring or cheap. Read "Playing to Win" "Introducing the Scrub". You do everything possible in order to win. Whatever gets you the W is game.
Lol everyone either complaining about HBox or lamenting over Mango, but nobody's talking about the true story of this tourney- PLUP beastin his way into the top 4!
Holy shit Plup just showed me the best Samus I’ve ever seen, against leffen no less. I’m sick of the hbox haters, he’s playing a defensive game and while it’s not as exciting it’s a winning one
There is a difference between a defensive game and stalling (or attempting to.) I don't hate Hbox. I hate his boring petty playstyle. At least of the last few years he's actually earned his shit instead of trying to cheese a win.
I hate how everyone is giving Hungrybox shit for camping the ledge so much. Shit if I'm playing Mango, MANGO for god's sake and I'm playing as jigglypuff, I'd be camping that shit all set long
+ERGTDK No, he was upset. You see that head shake at the end of his set against Hungrybox? That was rage. Of course you show up on stage with a smile. Nobody wants to be seen as "that salty guy" especially if your'e sponsored.
+Fieryvortex48 I think it was genuine disapproval. Mango always goes on about how he hates lame plays, like at Super Smash Con where Scar and Toph even agreed, and Hbox clung to basically the lamest strategy imaginable.
Fieryvortex48 Yeah, that's pretty much why everyone in the top brackets hate him. Armada, Leffen, M2K and Mango are all friends. Nobody even likes Hbox, which is why he gets booed even when he wins. They all just wish he'd fuck off with his goofy-ass Where the Wild Things Are face and stop pretending he's good.
Wow man, I love HBox, but he got VERY lucky. I hate using that word in smash too, because luck is almost always never a factor, but that set it was definitely a factor
***** Agreed. I wish he actually played instead of trying to camp the ledge. If he won "legit" I'd be cool with it. I love HBOX and Mang0, but seeing HBOX win like that was just... unsatisfying? I didn't feel he won because of skill.
Nights Owl Well not so much the camping, but Mango missing the DI on up throw in game 2, which top players rarely miss, and Mango's 2 SD's in game 3. He definitely didn't win because of skill. A win is a win I guess
***** Nah, I'm almost positive he got into Mang0's head after that first SD on purpose. There are a lot of reasons why camping Mang0, in theory should work really well if you do it right. Notice that fast fall b-air he did, it looked like Hbox baited him into it. Look at it again, turn it down to .25 speed if you have to, it looks like Mang0 was trying to catch him going back for the ledge, but telegraphed it soooo hard. Hbox knew, and air dodged upwards.
also the missed DI on the uthrow wasn't luck. mango overcommitted with his jab, and hbox crouch canceled it. if you can land a hit without someone anticipating and as a result they miss crucial DI, you outplayed them in neutral. you didn't get lucky. to counter your example further, there are many instances in which hbox dies to uthrow uair. hbox is known for being able to consistently SDI fox uairs, but this does not mean an uthrow uair kill on hbox is "lucky."
