Evolution by Natural Selection - Darwin's Finches | Evolution | Biology | FuseSchool
The study of finches led to the development of one of the most important scientific theories of all time.
In December 1831 a naturalist called Charles Darwin boarded the HMS Beagle, bound on a surveying voyage of South America. Whilst the ship and crew carried out coastline surveys, Darwin was free to explore the islands en route. In 1835 the Beagle arrived at the Galapagos islands, near Ecuador. What Darwin found there surprised him greatly. As well as giant tortoises and marine iguanas, Darwin collected and preserved a variety of different songbirds called finches. Upon returning to the UK he examined them together with ornithologist, John Gould, and made some fascinating discoveries.
The scientists observed that the birds were all similar to a single type of finch found on mainland South America, suggesting that these mainland finches had originally colonised the islands. However the Galapagos finches were all slightly different from the original mainland species, and they were also different from each other. The finches on each island showed distinct variations in their overall size, beak shape and claw size. These differences were attributed to the differing food sources available on the various islands of the Galapagos. Some of the birds had long thin beaks, and sharp claws suited to catching and eating insects, whilst others had large powerful beaks suitable for cracking open nuts. Because of the distances between the islands, breeding between different species of finch was unlikely, and Darwin concluded that the finches must have evolved over time from the original mainland species to suit the conditions found on each individual island. In all, 13 of the birds brought back by Darwin were identified as being entirely new species, all similar to each other, but with definite variations from their common ancestor. Darwin proposed that the variations seen both within and between the finch species arose by chance.
Variations which gave any individual a competitive advantage made them more likely to survive and therefore reproduce, out-competing those with less advantageous characteristics. Darwin called this theory Natural Selection and he published it in his book “On the Origin of Species” in 1859. Evolution by natural selection is now widely agreed to be the most accurate theory to explain the origin and diversity of all life on Earth.

Evolution by Natural Selection also applied in human being. Philippines have our local folks called "Bajao" who are genetically capable in diving up to 13 minutes under water. As I know they lived for a long time near in the sea.

The changes this video explains still occur, but it is today known, they are not evolution in the Darwinian sense. Studies conducted by Peter and Rose-Marie Grant have documented that the shapes and sizes in the beaks of these finches vary constantly at a rhythm as rapid as a couple of years and that the changes are reversible. Mutational changes in the DNA are not reversible. What Darwin observed was adaptation in an epigenetic framework, an inbuilt system of adjustment that operates in all organisms “above” the more rigid DNA code. It is safe to say that many other examples of evolution are as well better explained as epigenetic adjustments.

Slight correction: Evolution by natural selection says nothing about the origins of life. Evolution presupposes life, namely the self replicating cell. Evolutionary theory and origins of life are two separate fields in science. Brilliant and informative video!

I agree , the finches are an excellent example of the limitations of evolution. After millions of years we simply have finches? We can see this in selective breeding of livestock in a fraction of the time , but even with all the knowledge and understanding of genetics , we can't change a horse into a cow although that would be more believable amongst materialists. Around the same size , four legs , one head and they both eat grass.

"we can't change a horse into a cow" yeah no shit. Such a thing would defy evolution as no creature can evolve outside its clade

Watch the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s64Y8sVYfFY.html Answer the following questions: What year did Charles Darwin board the HMS Beagle? When did Charles Darwin land in the Galapagos? What animals did Darwin find in the Galapagos? What were all the Galapagos finches similar to? What did this suggest? How were the Galapagos finches different from each other? Why? Why was breeding between different species of finch unlikely? How did the finches’ adaptations happen? How did this help them? What was Darwin’s theory called? What book did Darwin publish in 1859? answers plz

drought in 1977 destroy vegetation in Daphne major island (in Galapagos) .No rain occur for next 18 month.Then how finches survived for 18 month without drinking water?
@astinscience
@astinscience 6 лет назад
Many seed and nut eating species get most or all of their water needs from the food they eat. There is also still morning dew from humid ocean breezes, which can offer sufficient moisture for life.
@andrewmarlow8770

Modern advances in genetics actually allows us to view at the molecular level what changes occurred to cause the variation among the finches. A surprise to many was that the vast majority of variations arose from the breaking of genes and various proteins. Not creating new genetic information, but throwing it out. Natural selection will choose any variation if it’s advantageous, even if it’s degrading the genetic information stored in a species DNA. The conclusion? Since destructive mutations occur millions of times more often beneficial mutation (adding new information, evolution through natural selection can never account for the vast diversity of life. Darwinism devolves life to allow it to adapt to its environment.

Thermodynamics of evolution and Darwinism According to thermodynamic theory, evolution is a spontaneous process that develops within living systems in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics. However, this process takes place against the background of non-spontaneous changes in the same systems - processes that are initiated by the environment. These non-spontaneous processes cannot be predicted by thermodynamics. Thus, Darwinism, the physical foundation of which is hierarchical thermodynamics, only partially determines the direction of the evolution of living beings. Evolution tends to develop according to the second law of thermodynamics, when the environment has relatively little effect on this evolutionary development. In the event of abrupt changes in the environment, evolutionary changes are unpredictable. Thermodynamics sets the trend of evolutionary changes only at certain stages of evolution. In this regard, in general, the theory of Darwinism, as a theory that establishes the direction of evolution, has limited application. This explanation does not require the use of the concept of artificial intelligence. Gladyshev G.P. J Thermodyn Catal, 2017, 8: 2 DOI: 10,4172 / 2157-7544.100018, Life - A Complex Spontaneous Process Takes Place against the Background of Non-Spontaneous Processes Initiated by the Environment

First the Chicken Egg or the Chicken? ... A simple example, imagine such a comparison: each day of Your life is one life of the chicken generation. In the morning, the chicken hatch from the egg, grow up, lay egg, dies. The next day, descendant of chicken grow up, lay the egg, die, etc. every morning a new generation. You and I also change everyday, but we don't see it. Suppose you live for 10,000 days = 10,000 generations of chickens. From day one there are ancestors of the chickens and day 10,000 are present chickens. On what day / generation ancesors became present chickens? Its like to ask when You become a man and stopped being a child? Let's say on 18th birthday, day 6500. But on day 6499, 6480 e tc, we are not much different from the biological point of view
