Always gonna have those that just HAVE to add their unnecessary two pennies. Always. As an older (not old... just been there, for the birth of the genres and bands of most of your lists) metalhead, audiophile, and overall music aficionado. I just want to thank you for your work. Love this shit, brings back memories, always brightens my day, and will introduce me to something new... hard to do, anymore. 🤘🏻

@@brent3086 I couldn't remember a ton of specifics at this point, I just remember him being caught red handed at a merch table selling home bootlegged copies of Madball, Agnostic Front, District 9, and Time2Shine albums, and I'd imagine other artists. We're not talking big names on major labels at the time, so he was stealing their music and making decent money for himself doing it. That's why he originally moved to Maryland back in the day, because NYC didn't feel like messing with him any more. Also, somewhere there used to be a gif of him loaded to the gills on acid riding a horse for the first time ever, which was pretty wild. And damned hilarious. And that horse might've actually been stolen? I'm not sure about the stolen part that time, because it was many years and many concussions ago, but there's a reason he mostly just dropped off the map for a while.

For me one of the best parts of beatdown was how it was a great soundtrack to actually beating down nazi skinheads that would show up at shows I was at. I live in the Pacific Northwest where there are a lot of militia/nazi/white power wackos that would come out of the woodwork to attend shows. The more urban ones would have the signature red suspenders, bomber jackets and the tallest doc marten boots with bright white laces. They would bring brass knuckles to shows…their excuse for this was they were always outnumbered but we all knew it was because they were pussies with daddy issues. If they were butthurt about being outnumbered then why even attend the show! Anyways that early era of beatdown was amazing and we’d even travel across the border to Vancouver to join forces with SHARPS(slinheads against racial prejudice). Canadians get maligned by some as being soft but I dare you tell that to a SHARP crew member to their face. They battled fearlessly against those fascist goofs and I was honestly shocked at times at how much damage they inflicted. They told many a tale of how they’d never see a nazi kook again at a show after administering various horrendous joint lock maneuvers and just generally knotting up dudes faces in ways I didn’t know was possible. I’m an old timer now and I can’t speak on how shows are now but I do hope that nazis don’t show up anymore. Peace!

@fogpumas yeah by 94 the boston scene was more like a gangwar. I remember those guys attacking the Meatmen at buntattys and a gun getting drawn in the club. How fun is that? I took a friend to see madball at the rat in like 93 and I remember walking up and thinking it looked like a prison yard not a show. It all comes down to these dudes ( dms fsu sharps or whoever ) wanting to police everything. The whole running off the nazis thing was pretty much a myth created to justify these guys abuses.

Very good music for brutal death metal and breakdown fans. Take a look at the legendary Suffocation slam from Liege of Inveracity. I feel crazy saying some of these songs like Neglect - Horror Struck and early 90s death metal sound the same. Hardcore has been pivotal to the NYDM scene (Suffocation and Internal Bleeding). Edit: Also Absent by Die Hard sounds like near end-ish part of Pyosisified(Rotten To The Gore) by Carcass which also had punk origins and Die Hard would be one of the first to do metalcore as Integrity.

"Beatdown hardcore" is practically just East Coast (particularly NYC) Hardcore tbh. I'd almost argue it started before 89 with bands like Agnostic Front, Sick of it All, Murphys Law, or Cro Mags.
@13Xibalba
@13Xibalba Месяц назад
Nah man there's no beatdown sound at all in those 80s NY bands, they're somewhere between punk and thrash. To me it began with early Biohazard (inspired by Carnivore/Peter Steele). Right after that, Biohazard roadies Rick Ta Life and Kevone Bulldoze would front the first real beatdown bands.

Beatdown, next to Nü-Metal is probably my favorite form of guitar dominant music. I love how raw and groovy it can be, while also still leaving some room for some metal riff age here or there to help add to the groove. Great compilation of bands here! This was sick. I got into it around 2008-ish. So cool to see all the examples. To people just randomly hearing it, it prob all sounds the same but there's cool nuances and some differences in the scenes in different eras. It was a joke then and it continues to be one now. The sole band that gets a pass from me is Breakdown, who's "Sick People" track on the Revelation records "NYHC, The Way It Is" comp( which was from their demo IIRC) was really different for that time. We called it "Mosh Metal" for the most part. Bands that lacked the punk influences inherent to HC and weren't good enough to hang with the hordes of Thrash bands of the time. Not only that, they were way outgunned by the NYDM bands that adopted the pioneering riffing of Suffocation (Check out "Liege of Inveracity" from their debut LP in 1991) that led to Slam Metal.

Having been in a band (Outbreak, NEPA, '99-'01), that was part of this scene at one point - this sound/genre will always have a place in my heart, and I'll always dig a few bands (old "tough guy" to new "beatdown", and "whatever" comes next), but the continued and purposeful propagation of shitty violence, always just ruins it for me. All that talk and lyrics about unity, family, brotherhood, ect., and yet there's a GUARANTEED fight or two, at EVERY single show I've ever been to? And now, not only is that type of bullshit violence completely accepted - bands actually encourage it, and I personally know some fans that have even literally judged how "good" a show was, based on whether or not how many people got hurt, and having nothing to do with how dope the bands were.......how the fuck did we get here, in hardcore? And for those who "crowdkill" and think it's sooo cool - using violence and fear as an ego-boost, is the mentality of monsters and dictators alike, so congratulations, Adoof Pitler.

I'm sorry gentlemen, I should have been more specific as to which band Outbreak, I was a member of.....as one guy told me one day, that "there's a band called Outbreak in every state." haha The band Outbreak I believe you guys are referring to, is the waaaay better, more popular band from Maine - affiliated with Think Fast!/Bridge 9/UMG/Trustkill records, and apparently, they even have a song on the Saw VI soundtrack! The band Outbreak I was a member (vocalist) of, was just a much lesser-known band, from a touristy town (Hawley), in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. We only played a dozen or so shows, released a demo ("Live At Sea Seas") and an official, self-released/D.I.Y. album ("The Way It Was"). I apologize again, for any confusion I've caused, and please continue to listen to and support the band Outbreak, from Maine.

I agree. Even the early beatdown still has that groove that modern beatdown has. It definitely got downtuned and a lot of new beatdown has a deathcore edge to it. No way you heard blast beats back in the 90s. Also I feel like to a certain extent it also has gotten way funnier. Lyric wise is so over the top you can’t help but laugh lmao.
