It's before the timeline represented (1990) but Days of Thunder on the NES had cool pitstops. You actually had to control the crew members yourself, so it was up to you whether you had a quick stop or not. I was awful at it, but still my favorite part of that game and never really seen anything like it since.

'94 always felt the best to me because you had control of the car through the whole pit lane (though maintaining the speed limit with a digital button was agony); I only wished that your box would be other than the first one sometimes. The car being on autopilot down pit road and the AI doing nothing but following each other in one massive single line for the entire race was what put me off of the later NASCAR games.

In nascar thunder 2004 your pit crew can make a mistake which lose some time on a normal routine stop.

nr2003 has the best pit stops hands down. Not only were the pit crews animated, but the entire stop was manually controlled. Meaning if you stopped too close to the wall, you can't get your tires changed on that side. If you're not stopped in the center of your stall, your crew can't change the tires in unison, adding time to the stop. If you rolled too far or didn't come far enough, the crew can't start service on your car until you're in the stall proper. You actually had to do a pit stop. Like all the Papy NASCAR titles, but nr2003 was the magnum opus before the dev team got started on iRacing. None of that "get to pit road speed before the line and the game takes over" crap. Just like an actual driver, the effectiveness of a pit stop mostly depended on you. I get that such a level of realism doesn't appeal to everyone... but then, we shouldn't be having a discussion about pit stops for the "casual" players, should we?

NASCAR 21: Ignition, has one of the best pitstops but the entry and exit are way too slow, and the repair still hasn't improved that much it's just animations they don't actually cut off pieces or do anything the animations showed. Also, sometimes it's not just one person repairing the car and the repairs are pretty slow it seems.

Apparently Nascar 99 was running single lugs on all 4 tires over 2 decades before NASCAR did

Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge from 1990 should have been in here. You have crew members coming out, doing whatever you tell them to do (even cleaning your windshield!) and unlike Papyrus games, your stall isn't necessarily the first one. Also, pit road speed limits weren't a thing yet, and instead of holding a sign over the wall, someone was standing in front of your stall with your number board. And if you overshot your pit, you might run him over!

I still have my Nascar Racing disk from 1994. I love that Papyrus went on to make the most popular racing sim with iRacing. They've come a long way.

Nascar 98. First nascar game I ever played. Never will forget when I completed a 500 lap Bristol race with the 2nd place guy being like 30 laps down. Jeremy mayfield in the 37 was always the slowest car he may of been 100 laps down lol

Why is nascar 08 the only one with smoke/haze effects? Its the only one Ive ever played and the only thing missing is the hoses for the impacts.

In these mid-late 2000 and early 2010 titles, what made a good pit sequence was the cinematics. It really adds to the intensity of a pit stop. The best pitstop is clearly from NASCAR Racing 1994. So realistic. Crazy they had this back in the early '90s.

Lighting is key for everything. And with advancements in designing with nurbs will change the games.....

I would imagine as AIs improve in the future, there will be pit action to match whatever condition or damage the car acquires over the race... Even the hood will come up if there's serious engine problems to address!

I only played one NASCAR game in my entire life as a smol boi, many a moon ago. I remember basically nothing about my time playing it, other than I was playing it and Jeff Gordan was my go to for...some reason. NASCAR Heat 2002...was not the game, but the tire changing sound gave me 'Nam flashbacks that contained nothing but the sound of buzzing drills. Can anyone explain to me, despite only a single, extraordinarily vague screenshot still existing within my deepest psyche, how I instantly knew it was NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona when that clip started?
