CARTOON EVOLUTION #22 - SPEEDY GONZALES
I take a look at the history and evolution of Speedy Gonzales, the pint-sized hero of the Looney Tunes roster, not only the fastest mouse in all Mexico, but an icon and legend of Latin America. Introduced in the mid-1950s as the final star character, Speedy has gone on to lead a storied history, marred with political controversy but decorated by wilful triumph. While only starring in 45 classic shorts, Speedy has left a mark like few other Looney stars.
I discuss how Speedy has evolved over time, alongside other Looney characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Sylvester the Cat, and also spotlight how animators changed his look, appearance and personality over time. Here's my look at Speedy Gonzales through the years!

I’m Mexican and Speedy is like a hero to all of us. He’s a legend in Mexico! I never found him offensive

I've always found it amazing how over the years (even dating back to his cartoons being taken off of CN in the 90s), every time someone tries to cancel Speedy for supposedly being offensive to Mexicans, the act of trying to cancel him ends up being what actually offends Mexicans. Like, it's hard to properly get across just how much Mexicans love the little dude, but there's countless examples out there.

Man speedy gonzales is a great character for cartoon mexican culture idk why some people from other countries hates him for being a stereotypical mexican character 🤷‍♂️🤔😕

I'm Mexican and I've never found the character as a negative stereotype. It was actually pretty cool to have a Mexican looney tune while growing up, and I was really disappointed to see him dropped form Cartoon Network. Mexican culture can often be self-deprecating, so we don't mind these types of things, rather we embrace them. But that's just one opinion.

I'm a mexican, I never felt offended by Speedy. I mean yes, he's a super cliche stereotype, but I never hated him. He was sort of funny

Its great that he touches upon all the support AGAINST racist accusation he added to the video. With Speedy and Pepe being the faces of cultural controversy lately, videos like these need to be shown confirming the national support/popularity characters like them have.

I was lucky enough to have met and befriend Frank M Gonzales, after whom Speedy Gonzales was named. He was my neighbor for years before he died in 2014 in Kingman, Az. He was a very nice man and the story about the origin of Speedy's name is true.

I hated how cartoon network dropped the idea of airing speedy gonzales shorts. Granted they actually did air back in 2002, but i don't think it's something to get offended over in the first place.

I never saw Speedy as being a horrible stereotype. Okay, sure he’s got the bad accent and poor English, but he’s fast, heroic and extremely clever. Now, his cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez, I can understand, since he’s slow, lazy, and packs heat. 😂

Nice. I like the Speedy Gonzales cartoons that paired him with Sylvester. But I particularly like him in The Looney Tunes Show. I find it interesting that the higher-ups felt Speedy was bad, yet a lot of people of Mexican and Hispanic origin really like Speedy. I do like how Speedy is seen as more than just a Mexican mouse. I can't wait to see him in the Space Jam movie.
