In one of my favorite recreational activities, Surfing, if all the Pro Surfers died and contests banned, our lives would be improved, they add zero benefit to the vast majority that do it for thier own pleasure, and there a many others like rock climbing, mountaineering, bushwalking and trail running that require no contests, I am mystified as to why people work so hard to turn these activities into mass competitive events to the detriment of the experience, the UTMB seems like the perfect way to ruin a good day in the mountains.

Very interesting. Is the periodization important for E-sports?

I can’t see that it would be any different for esports - just plugging away doing the same thing day in day out is a recipe for staleness in any endeavour. I’m not a esports athlete or fan but I wouldn’t doubt that serious esports training would benefit equally from periods focusing on specific skills such as tactics, reaction times, communication, etc would all be unavailable compared to a flat, continuous training prescription. How exactly periodisation looks in esports is doubtless different, but the benefits in terms of preventing staleness etc and providing periods of time off would definitely be beneficial for the athletes involved. The last few minutes of the presentation suggest this periodisation hasn’t been widely adopted yet it being a young sport, at the cost of athlete burnout.

The physical loading is different of course, but humans just do not respond well to monotone stress loads. It seems that the "Wake up and grind" mindset is prevalent in Esports. Learning how to optimize the adaptation process by using both intense, deliberate practice AND rest and recovery is likely going to be part of the evolution of the athlete training process in Esports just as in traditional sports. Of course, there are interesting research studies to be done here.....
