I take a look at the history and evolution of Yosemite Sam (known in Europe as Pirate Sam), the meanest, roughest, toughest, hootin’est, tootin’est, shootin’est Looney Tune north, south, east aaaaand west of the Pecos - and the hilariously chaotic creation of Friz Freleng, devised to bring a certain spice to the Bugs Bunny cartoons of the late-40s.
While Sam is most recognizable as a Bandit Cowboy or a Feisty Pirate, he is also one of the single most adaptable and versatile Looney Tunes characters, seen in scores of aliases and designs over the years - causing trouble for Bugs, and many other toons along the way.
I take a look at how Sam has evolved and how animators changed his look, personality and visual style over the years.

That's the real difference between Elmer and Sam. When up against Bugs, it's all about self preservation and just screwing around to piss him off. Sam, unlike Elmer, is a true villain with malicious intent, and that does change the dynamic of the cartoon. You feel bad for Elmer, especially that not that funny cartoon where he fights picnic ants instead of Bugs, but with Sam, he deserves it. It's funnier to see him get angrier and angrier every time he gets blown up. As for his guns, there was a Looney Tunes Show episode that directly addresses that, as he loses the right to carry them over his temper. He even directly quotes Charlton Heston's "Cold, dead hands" line at the end of the episode.

"Gun use" fact missed in this video: Mel Blanc recorded novelty songs and kids' LPs for Capitol Records. (Mel's first hit was "Woody Woodpecker" in 1948. It's actually the cartoon theme with lyrics, since he originally did that voice too.) On the records, both Elmer and Sam use their guns, but they always specify that they shoot gumdrops instead of bullets. The b-side of Mel's 1950 hit "I Taut I Taw A Puddy Tat" is "Yosemite Sam", where the gumdrop thing is in the song's lyrics. (Unrelated but worth checking out: The CRAZIEST record you'll EVER hear by Mel Blanc is called "Toot Toot Tootsie (Goo-Bye)". It's the most over-the-top impression of Al Jolson, with Billy May's Orchestra playing at warp speed. Mel even "sings" a solo while he "plays" his hands!)

Eh... I dunno. Somehow that's much worse than getting rid of their guns, making them shoot something stupid like that. Then again, most of the time when one of them uses any guns, they just explode instead of shoot anything.

@@mightyfilm Kind of agree, though records are products of their time, just like films. Any child from the 1940s through the 60s was constantly exposed to guns and their regular uses. Farms were everywhere, and WWII was very fresh in public memory. Across the world, guns were generally respected in a much different way than now. Firing gumdrops (and pointing it out) was a very subtle way of telling children that bullets overall are harmful, without having to mention blanks, their concept, or change established identities of characters. For that era and even today, I'd say a gumdrop can be just as ridiculous as a bullet.

I always thought it hilarious that in action cartoons, they used laser blasters instead of realistic fire arms, like they'd somehow be less dangerous. Yet, some of the Disney Afternoon shows used actual fire arms. Negaduck shot up a movie theater once! Granted, it was at the screen.

Very good video. I just want to point out he did technically still used guns in The Looney Tunes Show. He even got them taken away because he wasn’t a responsible gun owner. But his gun use has definitely been scaled back over the years. But that’s just a minor nitpick. Great video as always Dave!

Always LOVED, LOVED Yosemite Sam !! My favorite villain of Bugs Bunny of ALL. I like the fact that Sam never backed down to Bugs, of course to his downfall. 😁😁 Sam was hilarious and always made me laugh. I'm really found of 1951's Rabbit Every Monday. I liked the 4th wall reaction he had with that guy form the audience. I also like his appearance in Knighty Knight Bunny, the looney tunes show, and the HBO Max looney tunes. I can't wait to see the new toon out project. In Italy, in some old cartoons, he was called “Baffo Rosso Sam” (lit. Red Mustache Sam), which adapted easily to all his different roles as a cowboy, soldier, pirate or sheik.

I always thought the New Loonytoons show looked like a very cheap imitation drawn by the artist who do Cartoon Network shows or NickToons but not done well. Not same standards I'd expect from WB.

Pretty much the only other Looney Tunes characters that Dave will cover are: 1. Foghorn Leghorn 2. Pepe le Pew 3. Taz 4. Elmer Fudd 5. Speedy Gonzalez As for the Hanna-Barbera characters the one I see Dave Lee likely covering are the following: 1. The Jetsons 2. Yogi Bear 3. Huckleberry Hound 4. Top Cat and maybe 5. Quickdraw McGraw

it's too bad that Yosemite Sam in the Wizard World for Harry potter. it would be funny and try to get Harry and Hermione with Ron that Sam as a Death Eater.

That terrible Rabbit in King Arthur's Court special was directed and written by Chuck Jones, so that would be Chuck's first time directing Sam. Man, Chuck did not understand Sam at all.

Jones handled a number of shorts and specials which included Sam as a character. From Hare To Eternity was his first and only short to _star_ Sam.
