In this video I offer some handy tips when setting up the Evolution Rage 5-S to prepare it for perfect rip and mitre cuts. This video is not a review as I've only had it for a couple of weeks. I do intend to review this product, but will leave for a few months once I've properly put it through its paces.
I have included a link to James' Man Cave review of this product which is excellent. To be honest that video was the deciding factor in me deciding to purchase this saw.
Hope you enjoy the video, please give it a thumbs up and maybe consider subscribing to the channel. Best wishes, Leo

Polecat54941 Cheers Polecat, had it a month or so now and really happy with it. It is a massive step up from my previous Workzone tablesaw. Once you get the fence square (if it isn’t already) it locks really tight and is a great feature. Also I love the sliding table on the left side. Couple that with the mitre gauge and trimming my cutting boards is so simple. Finally don’t forget the riving knife is height adjustable 😀😀

@@Hand-i-Craft I assembled mine today and despite watching your video and reading your reply I still forgot to raise the knife when I made my first cut! in fairness it does say in the manual that I read afterwards, I think they put it at the lowest setting so it is flat in the box :)

Polecat54941 Took me hours to figure it out Polecat and, as you say, it was in the manual all along! Who reads the manual hey😂. Forgot to mention I’d recommend getting the specific wood blade if you can stretch to it at some point. I’m keeping the multi blade for cutting anything apart from wood and switching to the wood blade. Another thing I like about it is it is easy to swap between blades so it’s worth it when you’ve got the funds

@Hand-i-Craft 3 года назад
Sorry for such a late reply as I’ve only just seen this. Did you manage to sort the alignment issue? Not sure if this would work but try and align the fence against the insert plate line as that is perfectly parallel to the blade, loosen the bolts then maybe half apply the locking clamp to see if that will hold the fence in place then tighten the bolts up? I’m only thinking out loud here as I haven’t tried it but it may help keep the fence in place whilst you lock up the bolts🤷‍♂️. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Cheers, Leo 😀

Thanks, re-watching this as I have just bought one of these beasts, and pretty pleased so far. I did read the manual about raising the riving knife, so that was ok :D However after first test rips I find my riving knife is not exactly in line - only a fraction of a millimetre jutting outside the blade but enough to be a bit sticky when feeding to that point. So about to adjust the riving knife again to make sure it is in line well enough for a smooth feed. Seems a critical safety point!

Cheers Ged and thanks for the comment. Yes it can need a few tweaks here and there to get working ‘properly’, but I stand by this comment I have said many times that for the money it is the best value table saw in that price bracket. Just to add - I brought this saw (and love it-wish I'd brought a table saw years ago) but had to return my first one back to screw fix. I had an issue where it would cut parallel & straight off the Fence when in non extended mode, but if I extended the right hand table, the fence would go completely out of alignment again. Turned out the aluminium sliding rail with the scale on it was completely bannan shaped (could only tell when I put a straight edge on it, not by eye), and when extending, it was twisting the fence. Took it back to screwfix (their return policy is amazing) and the 2nd one I got was bang on. All Good tips from Hand-I-Craft here... wish you'd done it sooner lad! as I figured all the same stuff out myself... including the adjustable riving knife yesterday - The adjustable riving knife is useful if you're trying to do rebate or Dado cuts, as you can't do them when it's higher than the top of the blade. Also, if you want to rip thin stuff down, make yourself a zero clearance insert - I did mine out of 18mm ply, using a hand router to sink it down - Makes all the difference for fine cuts.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 4 года назад
Thanks Rob for such a kind and detailed post. Spot on with the insert plate and it’s top of my to do list. It’ll help to stop losing thin strips, plus if I do it with ply like you said it’ll strengthen it up a bit. I think it’s a great piece of kit and fantastic value for money. I love the sliding table feature and the fence is rock solid. Cheers Rob, Leo 😀

Thank you for your content, you are an inspiration for what can be done. On the strength of your great video I have recently bought the R255PTS, poor man's version of the Rage 5S., it's basically the same just missing a few features, - left hand extension- I've bought round steel bar and fasteners and made my own version, drilling and tapping etc, the table is exactly the same, I.e. the mounts for the rods are there, and threaded where need be. My LH version extends some 300 mm. Currently Evolution have no spares for the Rage to enable anyone to upgrade their R255 to a Rage variant, so Ebay and Amazon to the rescue. I have used a bit of CLS for the LH table, not ideal but as I can't get the real thing it'll have to do for now. The R255 doesn't come with a hose, so again vac hose will be used when it arrives from China. Best wishes

@@Hand-i-Craft, Hi Leo, I have 3 Evolution saws, chop, mitre and the R255. These tools are really good, being able to cut through all manner of materials. When adapting the table saw I used it to cut through 12mm mild steel rod, although there where a few sparks, it did it with ease. I had to adjust the blade travel to get to 90°, to get an accurate reading I used a digital inclinometer, so easy to use. I assume the Rage and R255 will be as good as each other on performance. I look forward to my next build project to put it through it's paces. Kind regards, Rob

Excellent! I think that the sliding section of the table really sets this unit apart from others esp in this price range. My one gripe is the lack of a factory fitted soft start module. This could be a good answer for me if I ever change my ancient table saw. It was my dad’s, he bought it in the mid 70s. I don’t use it much though, I tend to use my Aldi track saw, my band saw and my mitre saw.

My Aldi table saw was on its last legs Tony, plus it was always in the way on the wheel mounts I placed it on. It is early days yet but I’m very happy with my new acquisition. Floor space wise it takes up a lot less room when not in use, it is a major step up build quality wise and useability it is in a different league. It is interesting with Evolution though as they pitch their pricing of the higher end models somewhere between budget and premium. I paid £250 for this which is quite a lot budget end, but low premium end. It’ll be interesting to see what I think of it in the coming months, but I’ve been very impressed up to now 😀

I've looked at them for years but every time I've backed out because of the QC issues and accuracy of cuts so look at dewalts etc but then it doesn't fit my budget for the rest of the tools I need and I back out. Re the Evolution Rage 5 S Table saw, can you tell me if it could be mounted on a trolley cabinet instead of being on the portable stand thingy it comes with. I want it as a shop saw without the frame work as it would only be used in my workshop. Looking forward to your next vid on the new workshop, but please wait until the weather improves, I had to turn up the heating as I watched you fitting the insulation panels and doing the foil taping. stay safe in this strange time we are living through.

Hello Pete, thanks for your kind comment sir, much appreciated 😀. There have been quite a few comments recently on here about it being out of stock. Don’t know where you are around the world, but what I would say is maybe leave it a little while, even when stock returns. I noticed they upped the price in March and April (as every other manufacturer did) so maybe they will still be charging full retail when they become available again, or even a revised higher retail price. To put it in context I paid £230 last year and at that price it is exceptional value for money. If they start charging north of £350 for them that bring the likes of the Dewalt table saw into that kind of bracket. I’ve never used the Dewalt but follow a lot of RU-vid guys who do and swear by it. So maybe, as tempting as it would be to just buy it, hold on a little when they become available and I’m sure there will be deals available on them soon after. Best wishes, Leo 😀

I’ve got this exact saw and came looking for a way to set the fence up better because mine, although I’ve set it up to be square, has a lot of play in it so I have to set it top and bottom to the blade or it pinches and jams. It seems a bit too loose so when you clamp it down it can be at an angle. Watching your video made me remember why I never use the blade guard too. It is definitely poorly designed and doesn’t allow for you to pass through it unless it’s fully extended and even then can get in the way.

Cheers for the comment Giggidy, sounds like there could be a problem with your fence because mine locks square and solid. Brian Hewitt it doesn’t matter how I adjust it it’s never right. I have to measure top and bottom from the blade to the fence, put the fence clamp half down so it’s grabbing but not at full strength then check for square again before I tighten it all the way. Then sometimes it’s still off and I get it jamming half way and it won’t cut straight. I could never do the half cut then flip to do the other half because it’d never line up no matter what. I love the actual saw but the fence is a nightmare.

Thanks for the vid. Very informative even though i've had my saw a year now! What instruction book!?!? I don't suppose you have any idea what the small fence that attaches to the fence is for? Only thing i can think of is to be able to make narrower cuts as the main fence still fouls the thumbscrew on the guard, but see it as a hassle to use.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 3 года назад
Thanks Calum for the kind feedback 👍. In regards to the ancillary fence, I don’t know for sure but this is my take on it. If you follow other makers on RU-vid with the cabinet saws a lot of them are now using the smaller fence. I think the full fence is suitable for sheet goods like MDF as it is square with no chance of variation. I think the smaller fence (which should go up to half way of the blade) is for ripping timber. As timber has more potential to be warped / twisted etc it needs space once it passes the blade so it doesn’t pinch up against the fence potentially causing kick back. It’s only my thoughts on it and I’m not totally sure but it seems plausible 🤷‍♂️😀👍
@thebeardedcountryman
@thebeardedcountryman 2 года назад
It’s also for making cuts with the sliding mitre. A lot of people use the fence as a stop to get the same cuts. This is dangerous as the piece your cutting can get pinched between the blade and fence and ‘ping’ back at you. You set the little fence in front of the blade and use that to measure to instead. A bit like a stop block. Not very well explained I admit so… Check out this video from Steve Ramsay and forward it to 1:30 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JOhZxvgkWNM.html

Good video with a lot of useful tips. I bought the table saw just recently and I'm still tuning it up. I am able to get the rip fence parallel to the blade. The problem I have is that this fence is not 90 degrees to the table surface itself. Clamped or not it is a little crooked. when the fence is at your right hand side the top of the fence is about 1 mm more towards the blade. If you cut multiple sheets of the same thickness in equal width this is not really a problem. But if you want to cut for instance 18 mm thick wood on a width of say 100 mm and combine this with a piece of wood of 64 mm thickness the rip width will be 99 mm instead of 100 (more or less). With this it is (only)1% off but if the width would be 50 mm then is goes up to 2% (still being only 1 mm of course). My question is if and how you could adjust the fence so it is perpendicular to the table surface. I would be very grateful if you or somebody else would take a look at that.
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 4 года назад
Thanks Peter, much appreciated for the comments. My sincere apologies as it stands I’m not able to help you with this issue around the fence being perpendicular to the table. I thought I had the same problem but it was the blade that wasn’t square to the table and not the fence. The blade needs to be ‘firmly’ shunted into position by the adjuster underneath to achieve a 90 degree angle, maybe do a double check that it is the blade and not the fence that isn’t square? What I would say is have you been in touch with Evolution themselves? I’m not sponsored by them or have any other reason to recommend them, but their customer service is excellent so hopefully they could help sort it for you.

@@Hand-i-Craft Thanks for your swift reply. I really appreciate this. I own the table saw now for a week or so and I didn't cut yet anything with it. I am just trying to get things lined up as it should be. And as the fence concerns I use a small precision square (which is really square) and then I see this (small) gap. To be honest as I not yet did cut any thing this will be a problem which will occur in real life. As I said which the same thickness it won't be an issue. But theoretically it will be when you want small thickness wood to have the same width as thicker thickness wood. But maybe I should first cut some wood with this table. (the table is still in my living room which my wife doesn't really appreciate and I won't do any cutting in there as you can imagine) I think I'm going to try to put some washers on the left or right side of front of the fence where the two plastic glides are situated. If the fence is not clamped I can tilt it a little so that the fence is square to the table. And you see that when you clamp it the two plastic gliders move forward towards the aluminium rail which has a curve. If I adjust the heigth of one of them and if the clamping doesn't ruin this 'new' position then it should be oké. Maybe I have to adjust the fence then again to be parallel to the blade and this operation could also offset my initial 'solution'. I don't know. I will try this tomorrow and I'll let you know what the results are. Again thanks for your reply and again also for your video.

@@Hand-i-Craft Hello Leo, did not yet do the washer option. Now I think it is better first to start to cut wood. See if alle other settings are correct. Blade align with miter slot and with the rip fence. Blade perpendicular with the table. Fence aligned with miter slot and blade. The see how serious my problem is with the crooked fence. I can always use the little additional accompanying fence wich is not too high so the crookedness of the big rip fence is not that important more or less. And finally if it bothers me and the washer option doesn't solve this I can produce an artificial rip fence. But I must be sure that blade settings are correct. I have to do this outside because my shop for now has not the space to do all this. I think it will take some weeks to do this. But I will inform you about the progress! Thanks again for thinking along with me.

He uses the two bolts on the parallel guide to place it perpendicular to the table. I thought they could only be used to connect the parallel guide parallel to the saw blade and / or the T-slots. But apparently they are also used to get the fence 90 degrees towards the table face. So that is solved! No experiments with washers. :) Just have to build in a soft starter.

Secondly I’ve just released a short video on how I change the blade just using the one hand. Having the riving knife high allows me to change the blade easier. It’d be easier to watch than for me to explain so if you have a spare few minutes you might want to have a butchers. Cheers, Leo 😀

Thanks Phillip for the kind comments. I know what you’re saying about the blade guard. I’m quite lucky that the saw fits in neatly down the middle part of my garage workshop so it’s less likely to bang against anything when I put it away at night. I do lower the blade down though to its lowest setting to lessen it sticking out. How are you finding the saw btw?

@Hand-i-Craft 3 года назад
Hello Mary, thanks for the message. You’d be amazed how many folk have got in touch about the riving knife adjustment! 😀 The lubricating wax is great as it makes the worktop lovely and smooth and provides a protective coat prolonging the life of the machine. You can also use it on other power tool surfaces like a band saw top for example. I wouldn’t use just any lubricant as some of them may soak into the wood your cutting. Liberon is the one I use, it’s not the cheapest, but you only need really small amounts so it’ll last for years. I think I left a link in the description if you want to check out the price. Best wishes, Leo 😀

@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 4 года назад
Sawdust and Survival Morning Sawdust, it depends on the finish of cut you want really. The multipurpose blade cuts wood fine, but the finish on the cut isn’t fantastic. If your budget could stretch to getting the specific wood blade then yes I’d go for that as well. Just had a look on Amazon in the UK and the saw is on for £249.99 and with the extra blade it’s £282. I’m really happy with it, I’ve got a couple of videos coming out soon where I use it constantly through the projects. The more I use it the happier I am with the fact I bought it, particularly if you’re stepping up from something like a Workzone or Parkside table saw

Hello Glen, thanks for the message😀. I think it’s fair to say the proof is in the pudding. If you look at any of my making videos since I done this one, you’ll see the Rage 5-S in action. I really like this table saw. The portability aspect is very good. I especially love the sliding side table, the fence is rock solid and very accurate, the extendable wings come in really handy when you’re using sheet materials and the fact the multi blade will cut through a variety of materials. At the price I paid in my humble opinion I don’t think there is any other saw that comes close to it. Keep an eye out on prices though Glen. With the Covid situation manufacturing obviously ground to a halt so prices went up to full retail and higher. I paid £230 in a reduced price last year. If it floats down to the £250 mark I think it is great value. If it’s closer to £300 and you’re not desperate for it I’d hang on til the prices stabilise 👍😀

@@Hand-i-Craft Hi again mate, I am surprised about the prices going up during Covid, you would have thought that they would have come down the way and not the other way around, I am in the situation where our family business went under thanks to covid bloody 19 (we were in the restaurant trade for many, many years but you can't work from home as a chef 😭😭and opening our doors but being forced to have half the amount of customers doesn't make sense either so we close permanently) 😣😣 so now I have decided to try and make my hobby (woodwork) my career as I can't live on fresh air, so I need to start an buy some more equipment as soon as possible. I hope it doesn't go to £300 as you say 😣 I've been looking seriously at all the adverts on the internet including B&Q, Homebase and Wickes, I've even looked in Argos, Toolfix and a few others but most of the stuff I see is out of stock due to Covid-19 😭😣 Glen from Edinburgh 😀 👍

Alright Glen, sorry to hear about your situation. I’ve often thought about the hospitality industry as I’m under the impression they work with such fine margins. I’d be guessing 60-70% occupancy you’re breaking even, then 75%+ is when a profit is turned 🤷‍♂️. So when the restrictions say 50% covers then there is simply no chance of surviving? The prices going up I get as I could well imagine people wanting to do DIY projects during lockdown, but the products aren’t being manufactured. So what little is left on the shelves don’t need to be discounted. I’m guessing now manufacturing is running at a better capacity the prices will hopefully reflect the availability. I hope your new venture is rewarding, both personally and financially 😀😀👍

@@Hand-i-Craft Yes absolutely correct, did you read todays news on your phone ?? BBC News says "Half price meal scheme begins....Diners across the UK will be able to enjoy half-price meals at more than 72,000 venues from today as government's Eat Out to Help scheme begins. The offer - available from Mondays - Wednesdays throughout August." So you see mate not only does the hospitality trade have tight margins but restaurants have to give their food away for half price just to get customers back through their doors 😲😲😭 I'm looking to new ventures and I have this thing about making coffee tables and chopping boards 👍 and if anybody could ever appreciate tables and chopping boards then that person is me purely because I have waited on tables in restaurants and hotels and chopped on chopping boards in their kitchens my entire working life. To me a chopping board is like a miniature table top, but there are some bloody clever woodworkers out there these days who can make a chopping board look like it was made by Van Gogh. I came up and through many high class restaurants and hotels before we set up our own restaurant business a number of years ago so I am extremely passionate about the food I make and create a masterpiece on a plate in looks, hopefully my passion for making good food will pass over to my woodworking skills and I can continue to show my art and design in the products I make out of wood. My father before me was my biggest inspiration, regretably he's passed now but he could make amazing stuff out of wood, he specialised in making Rennie Mackintosh chairs but in miniature versions all tongue and grooved too and were sold around the world to discerning clients, if I can achieve half of what he could do then I'll be happy 😀 Sorry to prattle on and on, I shall let you know which machine I get...... @Hand-i-Craft 2 года назад
Hello pal, how’s it going? 😀 It’d definitely be a step up from your Workzone saw, great solid fence, portability is excellent, extension arms are great, I even like the panel saw style movement on the top. At the time when I bought it it was £230 (pre covid) and I described it as the best value for money saw at that price, nothing comes close to it and I still stand by that. Biggest downsides are noise and dust extraction. It is very noisy, no problem with the ear defenders on but need to be mindful of neighbours etc when using it. Dust extraction, even with the vac hooked up, is awful. Not a problem if you’re mainly using it outside (as I was until I built the workshop), but inside it really shows how bad it is. I guess it boils down to what your needs are for a table saw and what downsides you’re prepared to live with. Even if you went one level up and bought the likes of the Dewalt, you’d get better dust extraction, but it’s still noisy as hell. The other reason I’m stepping away from it is the one handed thing. I’ve never had a scare or accident, but for some reason I’m feeling less confident. Looking at alternatives pal. Hope this helps and let me know what you decide to do 👍👍

@Hand-i-Craft 3 года назад
There is an ancillary section to the fence Ima. From my perspective it depends what you’re ripping. If you’re ripping sheet goods that is square then the main fence is fine. If however you are ripping timber with natural variance, then the ancillary fence is recommended as it gives a bit more ‘breathing’ space behind the blade.

@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 4 года назад
Hello Ray, this message has popped up as I’m currently outside using the saw! 😀 In short, without a doubt I’d recommend this. I’m in the same category as you as a keen hobbyist. I upgraded to this from the Workzone table saw I bought a few years ago (older version than the one currently on the market). The Evolution is head and shoulders above it. It cuts great, adjustable riving knife (which I figured out eventually), I love the sliding table feature and extendable ‘wings’. Above all the fence is rock solid. It might need a little fine tuning when you take it out of the box, but once you’ve set it up properly you will really enjoy using it. Tape measure in hand now it’s 745mm across and 640mm length. If you extend the wings out (with the gaps obviously) it extends to 1250mm width. I’ve noticed the prices creeping up recently, probably due to the current Covid situation, so if you’re not desperate for it yet prices may well come down a bit in the future. The lowest price I’ve seen it is £230. Finally, never physically seen the Ryobi so can’t personally comment, but I have been told by more than one person that the build quality on the newer models isn’t the best. Hope this is of some help. Best wishes, Leo 😀

Hello nerervarine, cheers for the message. I know due to the manufacturing industry closing down in China for a few months because of the Covid situation, basically once the back stock of Rage 5-S’s sold there are no more. Folk having been waiting months for them (globally not just UK). To appease potential buyers Evolution have brought out a saw that appears to have most of the features of the Rage 5-S, but is cheaper. I haven’t seen the specs of the new one, so if you do a little homework and if what I’ve said turns out to be true then your in for a bargain! I can imagine Rage5-S owners who’ve been paying full retail of over £330 will not be best pleased though 🤷‍♂️

Bought mine from Screwfix a couple of days ago. So far the differences I've found are - Only the right side of the table extends. Also there's no dust extraction hose supplied, which is a bit of a pain. Other than that the body of the saw is orange not black - as if that mattered. That seems to be the only difference.
